What a kilo commits you to

The 1 kg buyer has moved past sampling and past restocking by the half-kilo. A scent is selling, or an order is on paper, and the question is whether to hold enough of it for two months of production in one go. The commitment is real in three ways. It is a quantity — dozens of candles you will pour from one bottle. It is a recipe — every one of those candles should come out the same, so the load, wick and wax have to be settled before the bottle is opened. And it is cash — from ₹2,832 to more than ₹24,000 sitting in a bottle until the last candle is poured.

Start with the quantity, because it is the number most people guess. Load is a percentage of the finished candle, so a kilo stretches further in small vessels and shrinks quickly as the load rises.

The wax column is the reality check. A kilo of fragrance oil at 8% needs about 11.5 kg of wax — more than a 10 kg bag. At 10% it needs 9 kg, and at 13% about 6.69 kg. So a kilo of oil is not a standalone purchase: it is half of an order that also includes a 10 kg bag of wax and a pack of 50 to 100 wicks. Fix the load before the kilo

At 100 g, pouring at 8% or 10% changes one or two candles. At 1 kg it changes a dozen, and at 13% it removes 24 candles from the bottle. It also changes the oil cost inside every candle and which waxes you are allowed to use. Going from 8% to 13% adds ₹52.21 of oil to each 200g Lavender candle and saves ₹5.99 of wax. Whether that is worth it depends on whether the candle genuinely needs it — and on most well-cured, well-wicked candles the extra oil buys less than people expect. The kilo is the point to settle it, with a side-by-side test on the last 500 g bottle, not a guess on the first pour from the new kilo.

The best-value kilos

CSI lists 106 fragrance-oil products. Counting everything sold as a fragrance oil — classic, Royale and oud, and designer- and Bath and Body Works-inspired oils, but not essential oils, perfume, attar or diffuser bases — 105 list a 1 kg pack and 87 have it in stock. The in-stock kilos run from ₹2,832 to ₹24,056, with a median of ₹6,499 and the middle half between ₹4,531.20 and ₹8,400. These are the cheapest eleven, with two extra columns that show what committing to the kilo saves against buying the same kilo of oil in smaller packs.

Two patterns stand out. First, nine of the eleven cheapest kilos are fresh, citrus or fruity scents (British Rose and Roasted Coffee are the exceptions); the woody, oud, rich vanilla and designer-inspired oils sit higher up the range. A range built only on best-value kilos would smell like a summer range, so value should shape which of your proven scents you hold in kilos, not which scents you sell. Second, the right-hand column is small on most of these oils — the kilo's advantage over two 500 g bottles is ₹0 to ₹236 — which means the case for the kilo here is fewer orders and one bottle, not a discount. The big exception is Citronella, where the kilo saves ₹4,779 over ten 100 g bottles.

Which scents deserve a kilo

Most small candle ranges have two or three scents that clearly outsell the rest and a longer tail that sells steadily but slowly. Only the first group should be held in kilos. The five tests below make the decision mechanical, which is the point: the scent you personally love most is rarely the one that passes all five.

The ladder check deserves a moment, because it is where kilo buyers lose money without noticing. On 43 of the 72 oils with both packs in stock, two 500 g bottles and one kilo cost the same per gram; the kilo is then purely a convenience. On 27 the kilo is cheaper, mostly by a few rupees and by 5% or more on only nine. On two it is ₹1,699.20 dearer. Cash tied up per scent

A kilo's price is paid on the day you order it, and it only turns back into money one 16g candle at a time. The useful number is not the price but how much of it is still sitting in the bottle after a month of pouring. The table uses 200g candles at 8% and three example sales rates for a single scent.

Read across a row and the case for sales-led buying makes itself. A Lavender kilo selling four candles a week still holds 74.4% of its price after a month; the same kilo selling fifteen a week is nearly empty. Read down a column and price does the rest: at four a week, a Tangerine kilo keeps ₹8,927.26 on the shelf after four weeks — more than three Citrus Lemon kilos cost outright. A slow-selling premium scent is the most expensive thing you can hold in a kilo. Hold premium scents in 500 g until they sell fast, and let the kilos go to the scents that turn over quickly.

Four kilos worth committing to

Each of these earns its kilo for a different reason: evergreen demand, lowest cost, a real ladder saving, or a premium scent with flat pricing. Each card shows every pack, the listed price per kilo at each size, and how many 200g candles at 8% each pack makes.

A costed three-kilo order

Here is what committing to three kilos actually looks like once the wax and wicks to pour them are on the same order. The three scents cover a range from different angles — Lavender for year-round demand, Citrus Lemon for low cost, Pumpkin Spice for the season — and all three are assumed to have passed the kilo test. Every candle is 200g at 8%.

The oil is 37.6% of this order and the wax is 59.1%. That is worth knowing before you economise on scent: swapping the Lavender kilo for a second Citrus Lemon kilo would save ₹2,389, or 6.7% of the order, while the wax line grows with every candle the oil makes possible.
