What 5 kg is for: the first line that has to sell

Five kilos is what most makers buy once the test jars have burned well and someone has asked, "Can I buy one?" It covers a first market stall, a small Instagram drop, a round of office gifting orders or a café shelf on consignment — not yet a catalogue. That is what makes it a good stage: 27 candles is small enough to sell through quickly, and large enough to find out whether you can make the same candle 27 times.

That second test matters more than beginners expect. A test jar is made once, slowly. A sellable line is made in batches, sometimes in a hurry before a stall date, and every candle has to weigh, smell and burn the same. So the rules here differ from the 1 kg stage: they are about discipline, not discovery.

How many candles 5 kg really makes

The count starts from one fact: fragrance load is measured against the finished candle, so a 200g candle at 8% is 184g of wax and 16g of oil. Five thousand grams divided by 184 is 27.17, so the bag makes 27 candles and leaves 32g. That 32g is the problem. Wax clings to the melting jug, a jar gets over-poured and needs scraping back, a top gets a small second pour to smooth a sinkhole. A planning allowance of about 3–5% covers that kind of loss — it is a working allowance, not a measured figure — and at 3% the bag's usable wax is 4,850g, or 26 candles.

If 27 matters — say you promised nine candles each to three shops — buy a 500g pack alongside the bag: 5.5 kg less a 3% allowance is 5,335g, enough for 28. And if your jar holds 150g, the bag is 35–36 candles, so the wick, jar and sticker order grows with it. The gram-by-gram method is in how much wax one candle actually needs.

Read the brackets. For CSI 464, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Soy Pillar Wax, the 5 kg bag and five 1 kg packs cost exactly the same; on Eco Soy CSI 400 the bag is a rupee dearer. Only Natural Soy Pearl Wax (₹126 less) and CSI 468 (₹65 less) reward the bag. So the case for 5 kg is not price. It is one bag of wax for the whole line, and one thing to store instead of five.

Which 5 kg bag to buy for your first line

Four bags cover nearly every first container line. Each card shows the wax's pack ladder, the candles each pack holds at 200g and 8%, and the one detail that matters once you are producing rather than testing.

The 3-scent × 9-candle launch, costed

Here is a complete, sellable first line: 27 × 200g candles in three scents from three different families, so a stall table or a product page offers a real choice — a floral (British Rose), a gourmand (Roasted Coffee) and a fresh citrus (Citrus Lemon). Swap any scent for one you have already tested; only the oil lines change. Each scent needs 9 × 16g = 144g of oil, and a 100g bottle plus a 50g bottle gives 150g, which keeps a little in reserve.

Now split the order into what each candle actually contains. The wax is the same in all three, and so are the wick, jar and stickers; only the oil changes. At the 150g bottle-pair price, British Rose costs ₹3.70 a gram, Roasted Coffee ₹4.13 and Citrus Lemon ₹3.13.

Keep two numbers apart. The cash you spend is ₹6,901.60 — ₹255.61 per candle if you divide the order by 27. The cost of goods is ₹194.10. The gap of about ₹1,660 sits on your shelf as 23 jars, 23 wicks, 13 wick stickers, 473 care stickers and roughly half a kilo of wax for the next batch. Jars and wicks for 27 candles: where the per-candle cost really moves

Hold the launch constant — CSI 464, ₹58.47 of oil, a C2 wick, both stickers — and change only the vessel. The spread from cheapest to dearest jar below is ₹64.90 per candle; the spread across 5 kg soy waxes (Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹73.45 of wax to CSI 468 at ₹117.21) is ₹43.76. And the jar is what the customer sees first.

On cost the clear Salsa jar wins, and the 50-pack is the way to buy it: six packs of five cost ₹1,203.60 for 30 jars, while the 50-pack costs ₹271.40 more for 20 more jars — your restock jars at ₹13.57 each on the margin. Its page describes it as upcycled, which some buyers like as a story. Coloured and matte jars cost more but change how the candle looks on a table. The 150g clear jar is the only one here with a stated fill in grams and a stated hot-pour limit, but it makes a smaller candle.

On wicks, the coloured Salsa jar pages state they pair well with C2 Eco Wicks, hence the Thick (C2) 50-pack at ₹9.44 a wick. The clear Salsa and matte pages name no wick, so buy the one that passed your test burn in that jar. Thin (C1) is ₹5.90 — ₹159.30 for 27 against ₹254.88 — but an undersized wick tunnels, and a tunnelled candle is a refund.

Storing an open 5 kg bag between pours

You will rarely pour five kilos in one session; the bag is usually opened for the first scent batch and finished weekends later. What the pages state is limited: CSI 464 and CSI 468 list a shelf life of 60 months in cool, dry storage, and the other soy wax pages state none. Treat "cool and dry" as the rule for all of them, plus the habits below — general good practice, not product specifications.

A simple reorder trigger stops the bag running out mid-launch: when what is left in the bag won't cover one full scent batch — 1,656g at 200g and 8% — reorder, and allow for your own delivery time on top. If you are topping up to finish the current line, buy the same wax's smallest pack; if the line is selling, that is the moment to consider the 10 kg stage.

Before stepping up, note that from 5 kg to 10 kg no CSI soy wax gets cheaper per kilo. CSI 464 (₹5,074), CSI 468 (₹6,370), Natural Soy Pearl (₹4,248) and Soy Pillar (₹6,000) are exactly two 5 kg bags; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999 is ₹9 dearer than two bags at ₹5,990; Eco Soy CSI 400 has no 10 kg pack.
