Quick answers — read this first
Is a sweating candle safe to sell? It depends entirely on what is on the surface. Light beading: wipe it, re-cure it, re-inspect — usually fine. A continuous oily film: borderline, test-burn one before you sell any. A pooled liquid layer of free oil: do not sell it and do not light it. Free oil sitting on set wax is a fire-behaviour risk, not a cosmetic fault — the flame is no longer being fed wax up a wick at a controlled rate.

Can I fix the candles I have already poured? Often, yes. Three repairs in ascending order of effort: wipe and re-cure for a week; remelt and re-stir at 80–90°C for a timed two minutes; or remelt with added wax to dilute an over-loaded batch back inside the ceiling.

How much wax do I add? Wax to add = (grams of oil ÷ target load) − current total mass. A 5.7 kg batch holding 700 g of oil is at 12.28%; to land at 10% you add 1,300 g of wax, which costs ₹659.62 at CSI 464's ₹507.40/kg and turns 28 candles into 35.

What stops it happening again? A weighing scale at ₹354, a pen thermometer at ₹354 and a timer. ₹708 in total against the value of a spoiled batch.
The short answer
Triage before you touch anything: beading, film, or liquid layer. The three need three different responses, and only one of them carries a safety rule. Diagnosis of why it happened lives in the sibling guides — why is my candle sweating oil and the load, mixing and temperature troubleshooter.
Repair the stock you have: wipe and re-cure seven days in a cool stable place; remelt and re-stir at 80–90°C for two timed minutes; or remelt with added wax if the load is over the wax's stated ceiling.
Repair the recipe: recalculate the load by weight, drop inside the ceiling rather than onto it, add at the stated temperature, stir two full minutes, cure cool and stable, inspect at day 3, 7 and 14.

How do you fix a candle that is sweating fragrance oil?
Sort the batch before you repair it. Light beading gets wiped with a dry cloth and re-cured for a week in a cool, stable place; it commonly stops once the candle settles. A continuous oily film is borderline — hold the batch and test-burn one before you sell any of it. A pooled liquid layer must not be sold and must not be lit, because free oil sitting on set wax changes how the flame behaves. Then pick the repair. If the load is inside the wax's stated ceiling, remelt and re-stir at 80–90°C for two timed minutes — most sweating in a correctly loaded batch is under-stirred or too-cool addition, both covered in the mixing and temperature troubleshooter. If the load is over the ceiling — 13% on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — remelt with added wax, using (oil grams ÷ target load) − current total mass. Diluting is almost always cheaper than discarding. Then fix the recipe so it does not recur: recalculate by weight, land inside the ceiling, and inspect at day 3, 7 and 14.
One line: triage first — beading wipes, film waits, a liquid layer never gets sold or lit — then remelt at 80–90°C, dilute with calculated extra wax if you are over the ceiling, and drop the recipe inside the ceiling for good.

Triage first: beading, film or layer

You cannot decide what to do with a sweating candle until you have decided what kind of sweating it is. Three surfaces, three answers, and only one of them is a safety question.

This page does not diagnose. Triage properly and you will usually find your batch splits three ways rather than being uniformly ruined. Do the inspection cold — a candle brought in from a warm van and inspected at 34°C will look far worse than the same candle at 24°C — in daylight, with the lids off, and tilt each jar about 20 degrees to see whether anything actually moves.

Why the liquid layer is the line
A candle is a controlled system: the wick draws liquid wax up at a rate the flame can consume. A pooled layer of free fragrance oil on top of set wax is not that. It is a separate, more volatile fuel sitting directly at the flame, and it can produce a larger and less predictable flame than the candle was wicked for. That is a fire-behaviour risk, and it is why this one branch of the triage tree is not a judgement call about finish quality. Take those candles out of stock, and do not test-burn them "just to see". Remelt them instead.

One more sorting step before you repair anything: weigh what you actually poured. Pull your batch sheet, or reconstruct it from the wax bag and the oil bottle. You are trying to answer a single yes/no question — was the fragrance load inside the wax's stated ceiling or not? Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are formulated to hold up to 13%. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is formulated to hold up to 10%. Those are the wax manufacturer's formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and they are not interchangeable between waxes. The answer to that one question decides which of the three repairs below can possibly work. If you are not sure, work through the over-load check before you melt anything.

Fixing the candles you already have

Three repairs, in ascending order of effort and descending order of how often you will need them. Each one works on a specific cause and fails on the others, so match the repair to the triage result rather than working down the list.

Repair A · Wipe and re-cureWipe each top with a dry, lint-free cloth — not a damp one, not a solvent, not a tissue that sheds. Leave the lids off for an hour so nothing is sealed in warm, then lid them, box them, and put the carton somewhere cool and genuinely stable: an interior room, off the floor, away from a west-facing wall, out of sunlight, and away from anything that cycles hot and cold through the day. Re-inspect at 48 hours and again at day 7. Works for: light beading on a batch whose load is inside the ceiling, and for the very common case of a candle that was simply stored somewhere too warm. Will not work for: anything over the ceiling, or a batch where the oil was never properly dissolved — you will wipe the same candles again next week.

Repair B · Remelt and re-stir at the stated temperatureEmpty the candles back into a melting vessel — all of them, together, so the batch stays one batch. Bring to a full clear melt with no unmelted flakes at the base, hold in the 80–90°C band the wax states for fragrance addition, and stir for a timed two minutes. Two minutes is far longer than it feels; use a phone timer, not your judgement. Then pour, wick, and cure normally. Clean the jars before you re-pour — do not pour fresh wax onto a film of old oil. Works for: a batch inside the ceiling where the oil was added too cool, or stirred for the usual twenty to forty seconds instead of two minutes, so it was dispersed rather than dissolved. Will not work for: an over-loaded batch. You will remelt it, stir it beautifully, and get exactly the same sweating candle back, because the wax still cannot hold that much oil. Expect a slightly lighter scent after a remelt — a second heat cycle costs you some of the lightest top notes, which is another reason to test-burn one before committing the batch to a customer.

Repair C · Remelt with added wax to diluteThe only repair that works on an over-load, because it is the only one that changes the ratio. Remelt the whole batch as in Repair B, then add the calculated quantity of matching wax — same product, not whatever is open on the shelf, because a different wax has a different ceiling and a different set behaviour. Bring the combined melt back to 80–90°C, stir a full two minutes, and pour into more jars than you started with, because you now have more wax. The arithmetic is in the next section. Works for: any batch measurably over its wax's stated ceiling. Will not work for: a batch that is already inside the ceiling — diluting that one just gives you a weaker candle and does not stop the sweating, because the load was never the cause. Recalculate before you buy wax.

On those success bands. "Usually", "often" and "never" here are what follows from the failure mode, not measured trial data, and we are not going to dress them up as percentages we have not tested. The logic is simple enough to check yourself: dilution changes the oil-to-wax ratio, so it works on a ratio problem; remelting changes how well the oil is dissolved, so it works on a mixing problem; wiping changes neither, so it only works when the candle was going to settle anyway. Match the repair to the cause and the odds look after themselves.

The dilution arithmetic, worked at real wax prices

Most makers discard an over-loaded batch because they have never sat down and costed the alternative. It is worth doing once, properly, because the answer is not close. All prices below are CSI live pricing, September 2026, and the linked product pages are authoritative.

The formula
Wax to add = (grams of oil ÷ target load) − current total mass
Target load as a decimal — 0.10 for CSI 464, 0.13 for Luxury Soy Chunks. Set your target below the ceiling, not on it, because your original measurement is the one that was wrong. The mirror of the same formula: every kilogram of wax you add legitimises 100 g of excess oil at a 10% target, or 130 g at 13%.

The worked case. A 20-jar festive run, poured as one melt: 5 kg of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and 700 g of Sandalwood Fragrance Oil, filled at 200 g per jar. Total mass 5,700 g. The load is 700 ÷ 5,700 = 12.28% against a stated ceiling of 10%. Three days after pouring, every jar has a continuous film and four of them have a visible layer. Nobody measured anything by weight; the oil went in "by the bottle".

Apply the formula at a 10% target: 700 ÷ 0.10 = 7,000 g of finished candle, against 5,700 g in hand, so you add 1,300 g of wax. At CSI 464's kilogram price of ₹507.40 that is ₹659.62 of wax. In practice you buy in the sizes that exist — one 1 kg at ₹507.40 plus one 500 g at ₹260 — so ₹767.40 spent and 200 g left in the bag. Land at 10% exactly and you have no margin for the same measuring error twice; adding the full 1.5 kg you bought takes the batch to 700 ÷ 7,200 = 9.72%, which is where you actually want to be.

Read the last row twice. Diluting this batch does not merely salvage it — it produces a lower materials cost per candle than the batch would have had if nothing had gone wrong, because the fragrance is now spread across 35 candles instead of 28 and fragrance was the expensive half. You spend ₹1,139.10 to avoid writing off ₹6,055.76 and you finish with seven more units to sell. That is the arithmetic that should decide this, not the sinking feeling in the workshop.

Where dilution stops being worth it. Three cases. One: you cannot reconstruct what went into the batch, so you cannot compute a target — melting an unknown into more unknown is not a repair. Two: the batch is small. Diluting 400 g of over-loaded wax costs you a minimum wax purchase, an hour, and a set of jars to make three candles. Three: the dilution would take the scent below what the candle needs to perform — if you are at 4% after dilution you have made a weak candle, and the load planning guide is a better read than this section. Everywhere else, dilute.

The same arithmetic on the higher-ceiling wax: a batch of 3 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with 600 g of oil is 3,600 g at 16.67% — well past the stated 13%. At a 13% target the formula gives 600 ÷ 0.13 = 4,615 g, so 1,015 g of wax. Buy 1 kg at ₹599 and you land at 600 ÷ 4,600 = 13.04%, which is over. Buy 1 kg plus 500 g — ₹898.00 — and you land at 600 ÷ 5,100 = 11.76%, which is inside with room to spare. Always buy the next size up. The wax you do not use keeps; the batch you land at 13.04% does not.

The highest stated ceiling in the CSI soy range, which means two things for this page. It needs less dilution wax for the same excess — every kilogram added legitimises 130 g of oil rather than 100 g — and a maker who keeps landing over 10% on CSI 464 may simply be building a range that wants a 13% wax underneath it. Chunks cost more per kilogram than 464 flakes, and take marginally longer to melt down; for a rescue melt that is a real, if small, cost.

Fixing the recipe so it does not happen again

Rescuing the batch on the bench is the smaller half of this job. If the recipe stays as it is, you will be back here in six weeks with the next run. Six steps, in order, once per scent.

Recalculate the load by weight, not by volumeFragrance load is a weight percentage of the finished candle, so it is oil ÷ (wax + oil), not oil ÷ wax. Those two are not the same number: 20 g of oil in 180 g of wax is 10% of the finished candle but 11.1% of the wax, and makers who work the second way are quietly over-loading every pour. Oils also differ in density, so millilitres will never give you a repeatable percentage. Weigh the wax, weigh the oil, write both figures and the percentage on the batch sheet.

Drop the target inside the ceiling, not onto itThe ceiling is the maximum the wax has been formulated to hold, which makes it the worst possible place to aim. Aim one to two points below: 8–9% on CSI 464 against its stated 10%, 11–12% on Luxury Soy Chunks against its stated 13%. That gap absorbs a wobbly scale, a hot week and the natural variation between fragrance oils, which is exactly the variation that turns a compliant recipe into a sweating one.

Add the fragrance at the stated temperatureEco Soy CSI 400 specifies fragrance addition at 80–90°C, and CSI 464 states melt and pour in the same 80–90°C band. Below that band the oil is suspended in cooling wax rather than dissolved into it, and suspended oil is what later walks to the surface. Above it, your lightest notes flash off before the wax reaches the jar. Read the number off a pen thermometer, in the melt, not off the dial of a melter.

Time a full two-minute stirTwo minutes with a bamboo stirring stick is an absurdly long time when you are holding one, which is precisely why almost nobody does it. Most makers stir for twenty to forty seconds and call it mixed. Set a timer, stir slowly and right to the bottom and the sides of the vessel — a fast whip folds air in and misses the corners. On batches above two or three kilograms a CSI Pro Mixer at ₹349 is the difference between "I stirred it" and "it dissolved".

Cure in a cool, stable place — stable matters more than coolLids on, in a closed carton, off the floor, in an interior room, out of direct sun and away from an exterior wall that bakes in the afternoon. A store room that swings from 24°C at night to 36°C at three in the afternoon will push oil to the surface of a candle that would have been perfectly stable at a steady 30°C, which is the whole argument in the hot-weather guide. If your only space cycles, cure in the coolest interior corner you have and check daily through a heatwave.

Inspect at day 3, day 7 and day 14 — and write it downThree checkpoints, because sweating has a timeline and the timeline tells you the cause. Oil on the surface at day 3 points at mixing or addition temperature. Nothing at day 3 but a film by day 7 points at the load. Clean through to day 14 and then beading after the first hot afternoon points at storage, not at your recipe. Record each inspection on the batch sheet with the room temperature. Four batches of that record will tell you more about your workshop than any guide can.

That is not a throwaway line, so here is the number attached to it. Take a 200 g candle poured at 12% on a 10% wax — the exact recipe that produces the sweating this page exists to fix. Bringing it to 10% removes 4 g of oil per candle. On Sandalwood at ₹5.03 per gram that is ₹20.11 less oil in every candle, and across a 500-unit festive run it is ₹10,053.60 of fragrance oil we do not sell you. We would rather lose that than have you lose the run — a maker whose Diwali batch sweats in the carton does not order again in January. The oil sitting on top of the wax was never in the candle in any useful sense anyway; you paid for it, it separated, and it made the candle worse. Buying better oil and less of it beats buying more of it every time.

₹708 is less than 12% of the materials value of the single batch costed earlier in this guide, and it is a one-time purchase that applies to every batch you pour afterwards. Note that the weighing scale was down to two units at the last stock pull, which is worth knowing if you are ordering for a festive run. What not to do

Three of these circulate constantly in maker groups. All three make the situation worse, and one of them is how a fire-behaviour risk gets sold to a customer.

Do not add more wax to the surface of a finished candle. Pouring a fresh layer of wax on top of a sweating candle does not dilute anything — dilution is a property of the whole mass, and the excess oil is distributed through all of it, not sitting in the top three millimetres. What you get is a two-layer candle with an oil interface trapped between the layers, which burns unevenly, can trap air, and hides the fault until the customer has lit it. Dilution only works in the melt, with the whole batch, using the arithmetic above.
Do not heat-gun a sweating candle to hide it. We sell a hot air gun at ₹531 and it is genuinely useful for smoothing a rough or pitted top on a candle that is otherwise sound. It is the wrong tool here. Flashing the surface re-melts the top few millimetres and briefly reabsorbs the visible oil, so the candle looks fixed and photographs well — and then the oil comes back, usually while the candle is in transit or on a customer's shelf, because the ratio underneath has not changed at all. Using a heat gun on a sweating candle is not a repair. It is a way of shipping the problem.
Do not sell a candle with a liquid layer, and do not light one to check. This is the only rule on the page with no commercial nuance attached. Free oil pooled on set wax is a separate, more volatile fuel presented directly to the flame, and the candle was not wicked for it. Those candles come off the shelf, go into the remelt vessel or the bin, and are never sent to a customer as a discounted second. A cracked jar you can price down. This you cannot.

Two more worth stating quickly. Do not mix waxes in a rescue melt — a blend of two waxes has neither of their stated ceilings, so you have replaced a known problem with an unknown one. And do not skip the test burn after any remelt or dilution: cure the repaired batch properly, then burn one candle from it end to end before the rest go anywhere near a customer. If the repaired batch still sweats, the load was not the cause and the answer is in the separation guide rather than in more wax. Frequently asked questions

Can I sell a candle that is sweating fragrance oil?
It depends on the state. Light beading that wipes off with a dry cloth and does not return after seven days in a cool, stable place is normally sellable. A continuous oily film means holding the batch and test-burning one candle end to end before you ship any of it. A pooled liquid layer of free oil is not sellable at all, and should not be lit either — that is a fire-behaviour question rather than a cosmetic one, because the flame is being offered a separate, more volatile fuel the candle was never wicked for. Remelt those, or write them off.
Will remelting a sweating candle actually fix it?
Only if the cause was mixing rather than ratio. Remelting the batch, holding it in the wax's stated 80–90°C band and stirring for a timed two minutes fixes oil that was added too cool or under-stirred, which is common. It does nothing at all for a batch that is over the wax's stated ceiling, because a remelt does not change the oil-to-wax ratio — you will get the same candle back. Check the load by weight first, then choose. Expect a slightly lighter scent after any second heat cycle.
How much wax do I add to bring an over-loaded batch back inside the ceiling?
Wax to add = (grams of oil ÷ target load as a decimal) − current total mass. A batch of 5 kg CSI 464 carrying 700 g of oil is 5,700 g at 12.28%; at a 10% target you need 700 ÷ 0.10 = 7,000 g, so 1,300 g of wax — ₹659.62 at ₹507.40/kg. Buy the next size up rather than the exact figure, so you land below the ceiling instead of on it. The shortcut worth memorising: each kilogram of added wax legitimises 100 g of excess oil at a 10% target, or 130 g at 13%.
Is it cheaper to dilute a spoiled batch or to throw it away?
Dilute, in almost every case. On the batch costed above, discarding writes off ₹6,055.76 of wax and oil. Diluting costs ₹767.40 in extra wax plus ₹371.70 in seven more jars and wicks, and produces 35 sellable candles instead of 28 — a materials cost of ₹248.05 per candle against ₹269.38 if the batch had been correct in the first place. Dilution stops being worth it only when the batch is tiny, when you cannot reconstruct what went into it, or when the dilution would leave the scent too weak to sell.
Can I use a heat gun to fix a candle that is sweating?
No. A hot air gun is the right tool for smoothing a rough top on a sound candle, and the wrong tool here. Flashing the surface reabsorbs the visible oil for a few hours so the candle photographs well, but the oil-to-wax ratio underneath is unchanged and the sweating returns — often in transit or on the customer's shelf. Repair the batch in the melt or not at all. The same objection applies to pouring a fresh layer of wax over the top: it traps an oil interface between two layers instead of diluting anything.
How long should I wait before deciding a repaired batch is actually fixed?
Inspect at day 3, day 7 and day 14, and record the room temperature each time. The timeline is diagnostic on its own: oil at day 3 points at addition temperature or stirring, a film appearing by day 7 points at the load, and a batch that is clean at day 14 and only beads after a hot afternoon points at storage. Do not ship a repaired batch before day 14, and burn one candle from it end to end first. If it sweats again after a correctly calculated dilution, the load was not the cause.

Beading wipes. A film waits for a test burn. A liquid layer never gets sold or lit.
