Buy in bulk the few lines that go into every candle and have already passed a burn test; keep everything that is still a question in trial sizes. For a 180-candle month from home, that puts ₹44,525 into six bulk lines and just ₹3,046.82 into the small ones.
94% bulk · 6% small
of a costed 180-candle home month: wax, jars, wicks, stickers, care labels and three proven oils in bulk (₹44,525); test oils, test jars, one dye and one trial mould small (₹3,046.82) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What should I buy in bulk for home candle production? Only what goes into every candle and is already proven: your one container wax, your one standard jar, your wick, wick stickers, care labels, and the fragrance oils that already sell. Everything else stays small.

What should I buy in small quantities? New scents (50g), dyes (15 ml), new moulds (one), new jar styles (a 5-pack) and additives (50g) — anything whose recipe has not yet passed a burn test or whose demand you have not yet seen.

Is bulk always cheaper per unit? No. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599/kg in a 5 kg bag and ₹599.90/kg in a 10 kg bag; Eco Candle Wicks are ₹9.44 each in every pack. But 200ml Salsa jars are 26.5% cheaper in 100s than in 5s.

How much stock should I keep at home? About one month of wax and jars (heavy and bulky), two to three months of wicks (compact, flat-priced), and a 1 kg bottle only for a scent selling around 60 candles a month.
The short answer
Bulk what repeats: one wax, one jar, one wick, labels, and oils with a sales record. Buying these small costs a home maker ₹2,819 more a month at listed prices.
Small what is still a question: a new scent in 50g risks ₹240; the same scent in 1 kg risks ₹3,738 if the burn test fails.
Size bulk to your space, not to the discount: at home the limit on a bulk order is the coolest shelf you have, so buy a month at a time and reorder.

The biggest discount on the chart — 42.8% on liquid dye — is on a line most home makers should still buy small, because one colour can take months to use up. The lines that belong in bulk are the ones in every candle, whether or not the per-unit price falls.
Straight answer
I'm starting commercial candle production from home. What should I buy in bulk, and what should I keep buying in small quantities?
Because you are producing from home, buy in bulk only what goes into every candle and has already passed your burn test — and size it to one month and your coolest shelf, not to the biggest bag. That means one container wax, one standard jar, one wick, wick stickers, care labels, and the fragrance oils that already sell. For 180 × 200g candles a month that is seven 5 kg bags of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹20,965, the same ₹599 a kilo as the 10 kg bag, and easier to lift and keep sealed), 200 200ml Salsa jars at ₹29.50 each instead of ₹40.12 in fives, a 500-pack of Eco Candle Wicks C2 (₹4,720), and 1 kg bottles of three proven scents such as British Rose. Keep small everything still being decided: 50g of each new scent, a 15 ml liquid dye, one new mould, a 5-pack of a new jar. The month comes to ₹44,525 in bulk and ₹3,046.82 small. Get the split wrong one way and small packs of your core lines cost ₹2,819 more; get it wrong the other way and a 1 kg bottle of an untested scent puts ₹3,738 at risk. Run production on an electric melter you never leave, with utensils kept only for wax — general good practice, not legal advice. Recurring orders and MSDS go through WhatsApp.
One line: bulk the wax, jar, wick, labels and proven oils — a month at a time — and keep new scents, dyes, moulds and jar styles in trial sizes until they earn a place.
The home bulk core: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 5 kg at ₹2,995, 200ml Salsa jars at ₹2,950 per 100 and Eco Candle Wicks C2 at ₹4,720 per 500.

The rule, and where bigger packs really are cheaper

There are two ways to get home buying wrong, and they cost different amounts.

The first mistake is buying your core lines small: jars in fives, oil in 100g bottles, wax a kilo at a time. It feels cautious. The second is buying uncertain lines big: a kilo of a scent you have smelled only in the bottle, a 100g dye before you know your shade, five moulds for a product nobody has ordered. The rule that avoids both is simple. Buy in bulk what goes into every candle and has already passed a burn test. Buy small what is still a question. Then check the price ladder, because on some lines a bigger pack is cheaper per unit and on others it is not.

What getting it wrong costs · one 180-candle month · CSI live pricing, September 2026
The penalty for buying core lines small, against the risk of buying test lines big
Line Bought the right way Bought the wrong way Cost of the mistake
200 Salsa jars 2 × 100 · ₹5,900 40 × 5-packs · ₹8,024 ₹2,124 more
British Rose, 1 kg of oil 1 × 1 kg · ₹3,068 10 × 100g · ₹3,422 ₹354 more
Lavender + Roasted Coffee, 1 kg each 2 × 1 kg · ₹8,959 20 × 100g · ₹9,300 ₹341 more
35 kg Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 7 × 5 kg · ₹20,965 35 × 1 kg · ₹20,965 ₹0 — flat price, only more bags to open
Core lines bought small ₹2,819 a month
A new scent under test 50g Orchard Pear · ₹240 1 kg Orchard Pear · ₹3,738 ₹3,498 more at risk if it fails
A new colour 15 ml liquid dye · ₹236 100g · ₹900 ₹664 more on a shade not yet chosen

Read the two halves together. Buying every core line small costs about ₹2,819 a month — almost all of it on jars — plus the time spent reordering. Buying a single untested scent in a kilo risks more than that in one bottle. So the bulk decision is about certainty, not discounts: when you are sure a line will be used, the bigger pack is never worse; when you are not, the small pack is insurance.

Worked out above: saving = (small unit price − big unit price) ÷ small unit price. Salsa jar (₹40.12 − ₹29.50) ÷ ₹40.12 = 26.5% · British Rose (₹3.422 − ₹3.068) ÷ ₹3.422 = 10.3% · liquid dye 15 ml ₹236 = ₹15.73 per ml against 100 g ₹900 = ₹9 per g, 42.8% (the 15 ml size is listed in ml and the 100 g in grams, so treat this as indicative). Wrong-way costs: 40 × ₹200.60 = ₹8,024; 10 × ₹342.20 = ₹3,422; Lavender 10 × ₹540 + Roasted Coffee 10 × ₹390 = ₹9,300 against ₹5,221 + ₹3,738 = ₹8,959.

The bulk list: the lines in every candle

If it goes into all 180 candles and you would not change it next month, it belongs in bulk.

A home producer's bulk list is short on purpose. Standardising on one wax, one jar and one wick is what makes bulk buying safe: the burn test you ran last month still applies, the wick still fits the jar, and a bag opened today behaves like the bag opened last week.

1
Bulk · wax in home-sized bags
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles
The wax with the widest stated range for jar candles — 8–13%, 10% recommended, fragrance added at 80–90°C, poured at 70–80°C — which leaves room to adjust a scent without changing wax. For home production the detail that matters is the ladder: ₹599 a kilo in the 5 kg bag and ₹599.90 in the 10 kg bag. The smaller bag is marginally cheaper, easier to carry up stairs, and lets you open one bag at a time and keep the rest sealed. At 184g of wax per 200g candle, 180 candles need 33.12 kg; with a 3% allowance, seven 5 kg bags.

Bulk · the one standard jar
200ml Salsa Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap (Golden Lid)
The line where bulk pays most plainly: ₹29.50 a jar in 50s and 100s against ₹40.12 in fives. Its page states a 200ml capacity and no dimensions, so weigh one filled jar to set your real candle weight, and measure its diameter for wick tests. Jars are the bulkiest thing a home producer stores, so buy a month's worth — two 100-packs for 180 candles leaves 20 spare for breakages.

3
Bulk · compact, flat-priced wicks
Eco Candle Wicks · Thick (C2)
Wicks break the one-month rule in the other direction. The price is ₹9.44 a wick in every pack, so there is no saving in the 500-pack — but 500 wicks fit in a drawer, and at 180 candles plus test jars a month they last about 2.6 months. Buy them less often, not cheaper. The page gives no diameter guidance; the coloured 200ml Salsa jar pages state "Pairs well with C2 Eco Wicks", which is a starting point for your burn test, not a substitute for one.
Size Price Per piece Candles
Thick (C2) / 10 Wicks (sold out) ₹94.40 ₹9.44 ≈10

Thick (C2) / 1000 Wicks ₹9,440 ₹9.44 ≈1,000
₹9.44 per candle · ₹4,720 for 500 Buy Eco Wicks

Two small-value lines also belong on the bulk list, because they go into every candle and running out stops a pour. Candle Wick Stickers are currently listed as 40-sticker sheets at ₹100 (the 100-sticker sheet is sold out), so a month is five sheets. A Candle Care Stickers roll of 500 (1 inch) at ₹413 lasts well over two months; the 1,000 roll is a different size (1.5 inch) at ₹699, so choose on label size, not unit price.

The mistake: bulk-buying a second wax "to compare". A 5 kg bag of a wax you have not tested is not a comparison, it is 27 candles you may not be able to sell. Compare waxes with a 1 kg pack each and nine small jars, as set out in buying 1 kg of soy wax to test. Bulk stays on the wax that already won.

The small list: tests, colour, moulds and new jars

A small pack is not a cheap version of a big one. It is the price of finding out.

Everything on the small list shares one feature: you do not yet know whether you will use it again. The pack size is set by the test, not by the month's production.

New product line Ribbed Pillar Mould 5 × 10 cm + Soy Pillar Wax 1 kg ₹1,660.82 One mould, several pours Will pillars sell alongside jars?
Small list total ₹3,046.82

Notice what is not on the small list: a separate test wax. Test jars should be poured from the same bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks as production, so the only thing that changes is the thing you are testing. The same logic keeps additives off the list until a burn test shows a problem they solve — Vybar states 0.5–1% for soy, so a 50g pack at ₹156 treats 5 to 10 kg of wax, more than enough to find out whether it helps.

Weigh what a small line really uses
Liquid dye is 42.8% cheaper per gram in 100g than in 15 ml, but no CSI dye page states a dosage, so the saving means nothing until you know your usage. In the shade trial, weigh the dye into a weighed batch of wax and write down grams of dye per kilo of wax. Multiply by a month's wax and you will know whether 100g lasts one month or many — and whether the bigger bottle is a saving or a shelf ornament. One CSI buyer notes the purple is "concentrated" and that "a little amount gives the candle good pastel shade". Liquid dye versus chips is compared in candle liquid dye vs dye chips.
Mica is a small-list item for a different reason. The white mica page says "just a sprinkle is all you need" and gives no numeric dosage, and mica is commonly used for surface decoration and wax melts. If you want it inside a wicked candle, test it in a few jars first and watch the flame over a full burn. A 10 gm pack at ₹57.82 is the right size for that test. See liquid colours vs mica powder.

Fragrance oil: the line that graduates from small to bulk

Every scent starts on the small list. The good ones leave it.

Fragrance oil is the only line that belongs on both lists. A new scent is a 15g sniff or a 50g test; a scent your customers reorder is a bulk line. When to move it depends on two numbers: candles sold a month, and how the price per gram falls. At 16g of oil per 200g candle, a 1 kg bottle covers 62 candles — so a scent selling about 60 candles a month uses a kilo a month, and one selling 30 uses a 500g bottle a month.

Oil per candle = 1 kg price ÷ 1,000 × 16g.

The pattern is the same on all three and worth remembering. The big drop is from 15g to 50g or 100g — Lavender's 15g bottle costs about 30% more per gram than its 100g — so a 15g bottle is for smelling, never for pouring. From 100g to 1 kg the saving is real but modest, from 3.3% on Lavender to 10.3% on British Rose. That means the 1 kg bottle is justified by certainty and convenience more than by price: buy it when the scent sells steadily, not because the kilo looks cheaper. How to decide whether a test scent has earned that is covered in how to compare two fragrance oils using a controlled burn test.

A costed 180-candle month of home production

Here is the whole split on one page: what goes in bulk, what stays small, and what each costs.

The example is a home producer pouring 180 × 200g candles a month in one jar, three proven scents at 60 candles each, and testing two new scents, one colour and a pillar line on the side. Wax and oil carry a 3% planning allowance for spills and residue; that is a planning figure, not a measured loss.

Inside each finished candle the materials are: wax ₹110.22 (184g at ₹599/kg), wick ₹9.44, jar ₹29.50, wick sticker ₹2.50 and care label ₹0.83 (₹413 ÷ 500) — ₹152.48 before fragrance. Add the oil and the three candles cost ₹236.02 in Lavender, ₹212.29 in Roasted Coffee and ₹201.57 in British Rose. The small list is not in those numbers, and it should not be: it is research spending, and a home business that stops doing it stops adding scents.

The CSI principle
Bulk is for what you already know. Small is for what you are still finding out.
A home producer who buys certainty in bulk and questions in trial sizes spends 94 rupees in every hundred on lines that will definitely become candles, and risks only six on the ones that might not.
Pouring the same bulk lines every month? Send your wax, jar, wick and oil quantities on WhatsApp to set up a repeat monthly order, with GST invoicing and MSDS for your oils on request.

Space, storage and safety at home

At home, the ceiling on a bulk order is not your budget. It is your coolest shelf.

A month of home production is seven 5 kg bags of wax, two cartons of jars, three 1 kg bottles of oil and, by the end of the month, up to 180 candles curing on shelves. None of it is dangerous handled sensibly, but hot wax, heated fragrance and glass in a family home deserve a routine. The steps below are general good practice for a home workspace, not legal or regulatory advice; if you have questions about registration or permissions, read do I need a licence to make and sell candles in India and check your own building or society rules.

1
Give production one room and one surfaceKeep candle making off food-preparation surfaces and use pitchers, spatulas and scales only for wax. A steel pouring pitcher (600 ml, ₹708) and a weighing scale (₹354) that never go back to the kitchen are cheap insurance. Cover the floor where you pour; wax spills are easier to lift from paper than from tiles.
2
Melt electrically, and never walk awayA thermostatic electric melter avoids an open flame under the wax. The Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360) states 1 litre capacity, two power modes of 300W and 600W, Gear I at approximately 70–85°C and Gear II up to 100–120°C, and a 1-year warranty. Plug melters into a wall socket rather than a crowded multi-plug, keep a metal lid within reach, and never put water on burning wax.
3
Ventilate while fragrance goes inOpen a window or run a fan when you add oil to hot wax and while you pour. Heated fragrance is concentrated, and a small closed room fills quickly.
4
Store in three zonesWax: the coolest shaded room, bags off the floor and sealed until needed. Fragrance oils: caps tight, labelled, out of sunlight and heat, and out of reach of children and pets. Glass: cartons on a low, sturdy shelf, because a dropped carton of 100 jars is ₹2,950 on the floor.
5
Measure the cure shelf before the orderMeasure one jar's width, multiply by the candles you will have curing at once, and make sure the shelf exists before 35 kg of wax becomes 180 candles. Cure lids-on, out of sunlight, for 14–21 days — standard practice for soy container candles.
6
Keep the paperwork with the stockA batch log for every pour, invoices for every bulk order, and the MSDS for each oil you use regularly — CSI provides MSDS and IFRA documentation on request via WhatsApp. If a customer or a shop asks what is in a candle, the answer should be in a folder, not in your memory.
The mistake: storing the bulk where there is room instead of where it is cool. The spare room under a roof slab, a store with a west-facing wall or a balcony cupboard can run far warmer than the rest of the house in an Indian summer, and wax that softens and re-sets is harder to weigh out. Note that the Eco Soy CSI 400 page states a melt point of 100°F (37.8°C). This is exactly why a home producer buys wax a month at a time: the fewer bags in the house, the easier it is to keep all of them in the one cool place.
In a home workshop, the cheapest bag of wax is the one that still fits in the coolest cupboard.

When a small line becomes a bulk line

The small list should not stay the same for ever. Each line has a trigger that moves it into bulk, and each trigger is something you can observe, not a feeling that the business is "ready". When a trigger fires, move that one line and nothing else.

The jar row carries a lesson of its own. Several CSI jar styles, including the matte glass jars, are listed only in 5- and 10-packs at the same ₹70.80 a jar, so "bulk" on those lines is a WhatsApp question rather than a checkout option. That is one more reason a home producer standardises on a jar that is listed in 50s or 100s. The equipment step is covered in candle making equipment for small businesses, and what changes when you pass 1,000 candles a month is in how purchasing changes from 100 to 1,000 candles a month.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies candle-making raw materials; we don't make or sell finished candles, and we don't manufacture the wax or oils we sell. A supplier would sell more by telling a new home business to buy everything in bulk. This page tells you to keep new scents in 50g bottles, dyes in 15 ml and wax to a month at a time, because a home producer who ends up with a shelf of unsold stock stops producing.

Every price, pack size and specification here comes from live CSI stock in September 2026 and links to the product page, where current pricing takes precedence. Specifications are quoted only where the page states them. The 180-candle month, the 3% allowance, the three-scent split and the small list are an example; the space and safety steps are general good practice, not legal, regulatory or fire-safety certification advice.

Frequently asked questions

What raw materials should I buy in bulk for a home candle business?
Buy in bulk the lines that go into every candle and have passed a burn test: one container wax, one standard jar, one wick, wick stickers, care labels and proven fragrance oils. At CSI prices that means wax in 5 kg bags (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹2,995), jars in 100s (200ml Salsa ₹2,950), and Eco Candle Wicks in 500s (C2 ₹4,720). Keep everything still under test in trial sizes.
Should I buy fragrance oil in 100 g or 1 kg bottles?
Buy 50g or 100g while a scent is being tested, and 1 kg once it sells steadily. At 16g per 200g candle, a kilo covers about 62 candles, so a scent selling around 60 a month earns the kilo. The per-gram saving from 100g to 1 kg varies: 3.3% on Lavender, 4.2% on Roasted Coffee, 10.3% on British Rose. Never pour from 15g bottles — they are for smelling.
Is it cheaper to buy soy wax in 10 kg bags than 5 kg?
Not at CSI's listed prices. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599 a kilo in 5 kg bags and ₹599.90 in 10 kg bags; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kilo in both. For a home producer the 5 kg bag is usually better: easier to carry, and you can open one at a time. Natural Soy Pearl Wax and CSI 468 do step down at 5 kg.
How much candle-making stock should I keep at home?
A practical rule: about one month of wax and jars, because they are heavy, bulky and need cool storage; two to three months of wicks and labels, because they are compact and flat-priced; and fragrance oil sized to each scent's sales — a 1 kg bottle for a scent selling around 60 candles a month. For 180 candles that is seven 5 kg bags, 200 jars and a 500-pack of wicks.
Is it safe to make candles commercially at home?
With sensible routines, a home workspace can be run carefully. General good practice: use a thermostatic electric melter and never leave hot wax unattended, keep wax utensils away from food preparation, ventilate while adding fragrance, store oils sealed and out of children's reach, and never use water on a wax fire. This is general guidance, not legal advice — check local and building rules for your situation.
Should I buy candle dye in bulk?
Usually not at first. Liquid dye is 42.8% cheaper per gram in 100g (₹900) than in 15 ml (₹236), but CSI's dye pages state no dosage, and one colour can take months to use. Buy 15 ml for a shade trial, record grams of dye per kilo of wax, then work out how long 100g would last. Move to 50g or 100g only when that shade is a permanent product.
