Is frosting a fault I should scrap the batch for? No. Frosting is the natural crystal form of soy showing at the surface. It does not change burn, scent or safety. Scrapping 50 jars at the unit on this page costs ₹15,025.80; a printed line on your care card costs nothing. The CSI 464 page describes low frosting and minimal blooming, but low is not never.
Why has my white candle turned cream or yellow? Almost always vanillin in the fragrance. Dark Vanilla states vanillin present and notes it for light-coloured wax; Roasted Coffee says its vanilla and caramel base notes can yellow white wax over time. British Rose states 0% vanillin and no discolouration in white or pastel wax.
When should I judge a soy candle — day 3 or day 14? Day 14. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing, and 14 to 21 days by fragrance family is standard soy practice. Some oil pages quote shorter windows — Dark Vanilla gives 48 to 72 hours — which is the earliest a candle is worth testing, not the point at which it stops changing.
The fortnight after the pour: five things that move
Soy wax is a mixture of plant fats, and mixtures of fats do not settle into their final crystal form the moment they stop flowing. They keep reorganising — slowly, at room temperature, for days. Warmth speeds it up, cold slows it down, vibration and handling nudge it along. Everything on this page is a surface symptom of that quiet internal reorganisation, plus one thing that is not: oil leaving the wax, which is a formulation or storage signal rather than a cure effect.
That distinction is the whole point of the page, because it decides what you do. Three of the five changes are cosmetic: they alter how the jar looks and nothing else. Two are signals: they tell you something about the recipe or the shelf the candle is sitting on. Makers lose money by treating cosmetic changes as faults — re-melting perfectly good stock a week before a festive market — and by treating signals as cosmetic, shipping candles that go on misbehaving in the customer's house.
The Indian variable that matters most is temperature. A candle curing in a Mumbai flat in July and the same candle curing in a Shimla workshop in January are on different clocks; a jar left in a delivery van on a 42°C Nagpur afternoon can pick up in six hours what would otherwise take a fortnight. None of the windows below are CSI measurements — treat them as illustrative, and keep your own log, which is what the protocol later on this page is for.

Frosting: soy showing you its own crystal form
Frosting is a fine white crystal growth on the surface of the wax, most visible on a coloured candle and along the glass. It happens because soy is a natural, unblended material whose crystals want to form a particular shape, and the shape they want is not the smooth one you poured. Given days at room temperature, some of the wax at the surface reorganises into that preferred form, and light scatters off it as a white bloom. It is not dust, not mould, not moisture, and not a sign of adulteration — the whitest candle in the room is often the purest soy in the room.
Nothing about frosting changes the burn. The melt pool forms the same way, the wick draws the same fuel, the fragrance is untouched, and the candle is exactly as safe as it was. What it changes is a photograph. A frosted white candle in a White Matte Glass Jar is invisible to a customer; the same frosting across a deep navy candle in clear glass looks like the candle has been left in a cupboard for a year.
CSI's container grades describe what they do about it in their own words, and the words are careful. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page states low frosting and minimal blooming; the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states minimal frosting; the Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 page states minimal frosting along with an ultra-smooth finish. Low and minimal are honest words: they mean a grade is formulated to frost less than a plain soy would, not that it will never frost. Anyone selling you a natural soy that is guaranteed never to frost is selling you a blend, an additive or a story.
What makes frosting worse, in an Indian workshop
Fast or uneven cooling gives you more, smaller crystals and a rougher surface for bloom to start from, so fans, air conditioning and cold steel tables all make it more likely. Temperature swings do the same thing repeatedly: a candle that warms to 38°C in an afternoon and cools to 26°C at night is being invited to reorganise again and again, which is exactly what a shelf near a west-facing window in Chennai provides. Deep dyes make existing frosting far more visible without causing much more of it. And handling a warm candle transfers pattern to the surface — fingerprints on a soy top can still be there a fortnight later.
Colour shift: vanillin, and how to predict it before you pour
If a white or pale candle drifts to cream, buttermilk or a distinct yellow over a week or two, the fragrance is almost always responsible, and the specific culprit is usually vanillin — the compound that gives vanilla, caramel, bakery and many amber and gourmand accords their character. Vanillin darkens with time, and it darkens faster with light and heat. The wax has not gone off. The candle will burn and smell exactly as intended. It simply will not be the colour on your product photograph.
The useful part is that this is predictable, because CSI oil pages state it. That turns a post-hoc complaint into a design decision you make before you buy: a white candle line should be built on 0% vanillin oils, and vanilla, coffee and spiced gourmand candles should be designed in cream, amber, brown or coloured wax where a deepening tone reads as intentional. Where a wax ceiling and an oil page range differ, the lower figure governs — CSI 464 states up to 10% and Dark Vanilla states 6–10% for soy, so 10% is the limit for that pair.

Oil on the surface in week one: the change that is a signal
Four of the five changes in the fortnight are cosmetic. This one is not. If beads of oil appear on the top of a cured candle, or the surface picks up a slick, wet sheen that wipes onto a tissue, the wax is releasing fragrance it could not hold. That happens for three reasons, and they are worth separating: the load is above what the wax holds, the oil went in at the wrong temperature and never bound properly, or the candle has been stored somewhere hot enough to drive it out. In Indian conditions the third is common and often the only one at fault — a candle that behaved perfectly in an air-conditioned studio can bead within days on a shop shelf at 38°C.
Start with the ceiling, because it is a number you can check in a minute. The stated maximums are 10% of wax weight for Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468; Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish one, so ask on WhatsApp rather than assuming. These are the wax manufacturer's formulation maximums, not rules imposed on you, and they describe how much oil the wax can carry without pushing it back out. Then check temperature: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, and Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for 85°C within the same band. Only after both of those should you look at the shelf. One option belongs here honestly rather than as a sales line. The Vybar Additive page says it improves fragrance retention and reduces mottling and sweating, and gives 0.5–2% of wax weight, with the lower end for soy, added to melted wax before fragrance and colour. At 1% of a 200 g candle that is 2 g, or ₹6.24. Our position on it has not changed: test it in a controlled batch against an unchanged control, and do not use it to paper over a load above the ceiling or an add temperature that is 20°C too low. Single-pour soys such as Eco Soy CSI 400 are sold as needing no additives at all.
Scent maturing: why day three lies
A new candle usually smells different at day 14 from the way it smelled at day 2, and the change is rarely a simple increase in volume. Top notes — citrus, green, aquatic, light florals — are the most volatile and tend to dominate a fresh jar, then settle back. Base notes — vanilla, amber, woods, resins, musks — take longer to make themselves felt. So a gourmand can read thin and alcoholic on day 2 and rich on day 14, while a bright lemon can read spectacular on day 2 and merely pleasant later. Nothing has gone wrong in either case; you were sampling an unfinished product.
This is where product pages and standard practice can appear to disagree, and it is worth being straight about it. Several CSI oil pages give short windows — Dark Vanilla states 48 to 72 hours for best scent throw in soy — while the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing. Both are useful. The short window is the point at which a candle is worth test-burning; the longer one is the point at which what you smell is what your customer will smell. Standard practice across the soy container trade is 14 days, stretching to 21 for heavy vanilla, amber and woody families.
Practically: do not launch a fragrance on a day-2 impression, do not reject one either, and never compare a day-2 jar against a day-20 jar and call it a fragrance comparison. Fix the cure age as carefully as you fix the load, and use the same room and the same time of day for every sniff. The hold-back protocol: three jars, four checkpoints
You cannot run a cure log on stock you have already shipped. Hold three jars back from every batch — at the unit on this page that is ₹901.55 of materials, less than the cost of one returned parcel — and put them through the same four checkpoints every time. After three or four batches you will know your own workshop's clock better than any guide can tell you.
The day-14 decision, priced
Every response to a changed batch has a number attached, and the numbers are far apart. This is the table to look at before you decide that a fortnight of work is waste — particularly in October, when re-pouring a batch does not just cost materials, it costs the cure window that the festive date depends on.

If your customers are happy, a frosted jar is finished stock and a cream-coloured vanilla candle is a cream-coloured vanilla candle. The batches genuinely worth reworking are the ones with oil on the surface or a surface still soft at day five, and even those are usually a load adjustment or a storage instruction rather than a new wax.
