Quick answers — read this first
Why does my soy candle have a sinkhole? Because wax takes up less room solid than liquid. A soy candle sets from the glass inwards, so the crust locks first and the shrinking core cannot pull wax down from above. The void appears where the last liquid sat — almost always beside the wick. It is normal behaviour for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and every other soy container wax, not a bad batch.

How do I fix a sinkhole that has already formed? Pierce two or three relief holes beside the wick while the top is still soft, then top up with 20 g of wax held back from the same melt — ₹11.98 of Chunks, no extra material cost. Reheat the reserve to the same pour temperature so it fuses instead of leaving a ring.

Does pouring cooler stop sinkholes? It reduces them, it does not remove them. The Chunks page gives a pour temperature you can state as 75–80°C; Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 pours at 58–60°C. Cooling speed matters as much: a jar under a fan or an air conditioner crusts early and hides a bigger cavity.

Is a sinkhole a safety problem? Filled properly, no — it is cosmetic. Left as an open cavity that runs down beside the wick, the first burn drops into the hole early and behaves unpredictably. General practice is to fill it before the candle is sold, which is why the top-up pour exists.
The short answer
The cause: soy wax occupies less volume solid than liquid. A 1 mm drop across an illustrative 70 mm jar is about 3.85 cm³ of wax that simply is not there any more.
The reason it hides: the jar sets outside-in. The crust closes over the last liquid, so the shortfall shows up as a cavity beside the wick instead of an even drop in level.
The fix: relief holes and a 20 g top-up from the same melt (₹11.98), poured at the same temperature and left to cure with the batch.

Straight answer
Why does my soy candle have sinkholes, and what do I do about them?
A sinkhole is shrinkage that had nowhere to go. Wax occupies less volume as a solid than as a liquid, so every soy candle loses height as it sets; on an illustrative 70 mm jar, each 1 mm of drop is about 3.85 cm³. The reason you see a crater rather than an even fall is that a container candle sets from the glass inwards. Within the first 20–40 minutes a shell forms at the walls and the surface, and once that crust closes, the still-liquid core cannot draw wax down from above. The shortfall collects where the last liquid was, which is beside the wick, because the wick tab and the centre of the jar are the slowest places to give up heat. Three things make it worse and all three are yours to set: a hotter pour (more contraction to come), faster surface cooling (an earlier crust — fans, air conditioning, cold glass), and a deep single pour in a wide or shouldered jar. The fix is not a different wax. It is to pour 180 g (₹107.82 of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks), keep 20 g back (₹11.98), pierce relief holes beside the wick while the top is still soft, and top up at the same temperature the Chunks page gives for pouring — 75–80°C. What a sinkhole actually is — and where the missing wax went

Nothing leaked. Nothing evaporated. The wax you cannot see was never missing — it just takes up less room now.

Weigh a finished candle and the maths is boring: 200 g of wax poured, 200 g of wax in the jar. Look at it and the maths seems wrong — there is a crater beside the wick, or a hollow you only find when the skewer drops through a crust that looked perfect. Both are the same event. Wax expands when it melts and contracts when it sets, and a container candle has to absorb that contraction somewhere inside a rigid glass jar.

The size is easy to picture. Take an illustrative jar with a 70 mm inside diameter — a common gifting size, though CSI does not publish diameters for its jars, so measure yours with a ruler across the mouth. That surface is 38.48 cm². Every 1 mm the level drops is about 3.85 cm³ of volume, roughly three-quarters of a teaspoon. A 3 mm drop is 11.55 cm³. A hidden cavity 20 mm across and 15 mm deep is about 4.71 cm³. None of that is lost material; it is the same wax, packed tighter.

What decides whether you see an even drop or a crater is the order in which the jar freezes. Glass conducts heat out through the walls, and the open top loses heat to the room, so the shell forms at the edges and the surface first. The centre — and especially the column of wax around the wick and its metal tab — stays liquid longest. Once a crust closes over the top, the shrinking core has no way of drawing wax down to feed itself, and the deficit opens up as a void underneath. Pouring the whole 200 g in one go and hoping. A single deep pour gives the core the most shrinking to do and the crust the best chance of sealing over it first. The candle is not saved by a hotter pour — hotter wax has further to contract. It is saved by leaving yourself a reserve: pour 180 g (₹107.82 of Chunks), keep 20 g back (₹11.98), and finish the job once the core has done its shrinking.

The four levers that decide how big the void is

You cannot switch shrinkage off. You can decide how much of it ends up as a hole somebody can see.

Every case of sinkholes traces back to one or more of four things, and all four are set on your bench rather than in the wax. Ranked by how much they change the outcome in an Indian workroom:

The ranking matters because makers usually start at number four. A crater appears, the wax gets blamed, and a kilogram of something dearer goes into the basket. Changing from Chunks to CSI 468 adds ₹10.20 to every 200 g candle and changes nothing at all if the jar is still cooling under a ceiling fan. Fix the fan first: it is free.

Temperature is the lever with the clearest published numbers. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to melt to approximately 80–85°C, add dye at full melt, add fragrance at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, and pour at a temperature you can treat as 75–80°C. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — a genuinely different animal, and the reason coconut-soy blends often behave better in a hot Indian room. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for fragrance at 85°C, a gentle two-minute stir and a direct pour, and states that no additives are needed. Where a page does not publish a figure, this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Cooling a tray of jars in front of an air conditioner because the room is 38°C. It feels productive and it is the single most reliable way to manufacture a cavity. Cold air across the surface builds the crust while the core is still fully liquid. If the room is genuinely too hot to set at all, slow the whole jar down evenly instead — a shelf away from the wall, a loose cover, and patience. Uneven cooling is worse than slow cooling.

Find the void before your customer does

The expensive sinkhole is the one nobody saw. It waits under a smooth top until the candle is lit in somebody else’s living room.

A hidden cavity is not detectable by eye, which is why any batch destined for sale needs a check that does not rely on eyes. Four cost nothing and take seconds per jar.

The skewer probe is the only one that earns its place in a production routine, because it doubles as the relief hole. Do it at 90 minutes and you are inspecting and fixing in the same movement. Do it at 24 hours and you are drilling a hole in a set candle that then needs a much larger repair. Relief holes and the top-up pour, step by step

Two pours, one melt, one candle. The wax you hold back is not extra cost — it is the same 200 g, delivered in two instalments.

This is the method the rest of the page exists to support. It assumes the series costing unit: 200 g of wax plus 16 g of fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight, 216 g poured, which at Chunks and Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil prices is ₹119.80 of wax and ₹49.09 of oil, plus an Eco Candle Wicks C1 wick at ₹5.90 — ₹174.79 a candle before the jar.

Step 1 · Split the melt before you pour anythingPour 180 g into the jar and leave 20 g in the pitcher. That is ₹107.82 and ₹11.98 of the same ₹119.80 of wax. Step 4 · Leave it alone, then start the cure clock from the first pourDo not move the jar for at least four hours. The cure clock does not restart: the Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles. Count from the first pour, not the second.

Two details decide whether this looks professional or looks like a repair. The first is temperature: a top-up that is much hotter than the candle underneath melts a shallow dish into the old surface and leaves a visible tide mark; one that is much cooler sits as a separate disc. The second is source: reserve wax from the same melt carries the same oil at the same load. Wax from a fresh melt, even of the same grade, will have had a different heat history, and on a coloured or heavily scented batch that difference shows.

Topping up with a heat gun instead of wax. Melting the surface flat does not fill a cavity — it moves the top down onto it, and on a deep void it opens the hole rather than closing it. Surface reflow has its uses on a rough or dished top, and a Hot Air Gun (₹531.00, low stock) reaches about 200°C in seconds and is used at a 5–6 cm distance at roughly 45 degrees according to its page. But a genuine cavity needs volume, and volume means wax.
Waiting until the next day to top up. Once the candle is fully set, a top-up pour meets cold wax and fuses badly, and the relief holes have to be cut rather than pushed. A crater is cheap to prevent, moderately cheap to fill and painfully expensive to discover after the label is on.

The number that surprises people is the third row. Holding 20 g back costs nothing in material, because the candle still ends up with 200 g in it. What it costs is a second visit to every jar — about half a minute each, plus the reheat. Against ₹1,076.75 for four scrapped candles, that is an easy trade at any batch size above about a dozen.

One honest note on bulk pricing while you are planning a 10 kg run. Chunks are ₹599.00 per kilogram in the 1 kg pack and ₹599.90 per kilogram in the 10 kg pack, so buying ten single kilograms costs ₹5,990.00 against ₹5,999.00 for the large pack — the small packs are marginally cheaper per kilogram. Jars, depth and the shapes that hide voids

The wax does the shrinking. The jar decides where you find out about it.

CSI does not publish inside diameters or fill depths for its containers, so every number in this section is something you measure once with a ruler and write on a card. What matters is the ratio between depth and width, and whether the jar has a shoulder.

Two illustrative numbers to hold the geometry in your head. Pour the same 1 mm shortfall into a 60 mm jar and you lose 2.83 cm³ of volume; in an 85 mm jar the same 1 mm is 5.67 cm³, because surface area goes up with the square of the radius. Wide jars therefore look worse for the same amount of shrinkage, and they are also the jars where a deep single pour is most tempting. That is not a reason to avoid them; it is a reason to pour them in two stages from the start.

One grade note. Soy Pillar Wax at ₹600.00 a kilogram is formulated for moulds and designer candles and is described on its page as releasing cleanly from moulds — the opposite of what a jar wants. Poured into glass it will pull away and leave voids at the wall that no top-up can fix. If a jar batch is full of gaps at the glass rather than at the wick, check which wax went into it before changing anything else.

Indian rooms: 40°C afternoons, air conditioning and the monsoon

The same recipe behaves differently in a Delhi May, a Kochi August and a Pune December. The wax has not changed; the cooling curve has.

Most sinkhole advice written elsewhere assumes a 20–22°C workroom. Very little Indian candle making happens in one. The practical question is not what the ideal ambient is, but how to keep cooling even when the ambient is 38°C in the afternoon and 26°C by midnight.

The 40°C summer problem

In Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur in May, a jar poured at 3 pm may not set for hours, and the shrinkage happens slowly and evenly. That part is good: slow, even cooling is exactly what suppresses craters. The trouble starts when a maker gets impatient, or when the room drops ten degrees after sunset and a candle that was half set gets a sudden cold surface. Pour early in the day, let the tray sit where the temperature will change least, and accept a longer wait before the top-up — three hours rather than ninety minutes is reasonable in a very hot room.

Air conditioning and ceiling fans

An air-conditioned room is the most reliable sinkhole factory in Indian candle making, not because it is cold but because the air moves. A ceiling fan at low speed over a curing tray does the same thing. If you must work in an air-conditioned room, pour in it, then move the tray to a still corner away from the vent, and put a loose cover over the jars so the surface does not lose heat faster than the body.

Monsoon

Mumbai, Kochi and Kolkata in July bring a different problem: the ambient is not cold, but everything is damp and the cooling is slow and erratic. Sinkholes are less of a monsoon defect than surface faults are, but two habits help — store wax sealed, which the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page recommends as part of its 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage away from sunlight and moisture, and give the reserve wax a lid so condensation does not collect in the pitcher between the two pours.

Couriers and the journey

A candle that left your bench flat can arrive dished. Courier vans in an Indian summer routinely run far hotter than any room, and a candle that softens in transit and re-sets in a warehouse will re-shrink — usually as a shallow dip rather than a cavity. There is no fix at the receiving end except to let it settle. There is a fix at your end: cure fully before dispatch, so the candle that travels is a finished one, not one that is still moving.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the sinkhole always appear next to the wick?
Because the wick and its metal tab sit in the middle of the jar, furthest from the glass that is pulling heat out. That column is the last to solidify, so it is where the shortfall collects. General practice is to pierce relief holes 10–15 mm out from the wick rather than against it, so the top-up wax runs down beside it without disturbing the wick or the tab.
Can I stop sinkholes completely by pouring at a lower temperature?
No. A cooler pour has less contraction still to come, so the void is smaller, but it does not disappear. Pour too cool and you trade the crater for a rough or lumpy top and poor glass adhesion. Stay inside the published ranges — 75–80°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 58–60°C for Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, the 80–90°C working range the Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives — and handle the rest with the top-up pour.
Is a two-stage pour the same as a second layer?
No. A layered candle is poured in stages that are meant to be visible and is usually allowed to set between pours. A top-up is poured into relief holes while the core is still soft, at the same temperature and from the same melt, specifically so that it is not visible. Set wax plus fresh hot wax is what creates a tide line; soft wax plus matched wax does not.
How much wax should I hold back for the top-up?
About 10% of the fill is a workable default — 20 g on a 200 g candle, ₹11.98 of Chunks. Deep or shouldered jars can need 15%. There is no penalty for holding back too much: whatever is left over goes into the next jar or back into the melter. Holding back too little means a second reheat.
Do single-pour waxes really not need a top-up?
Container grades sold as single-pour are formulated to shrink less visibly, and many makers do get away with one pour — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is described on its page as a single-pour container wax and Eco Soy CSI 400 is often poured directly. That is a claim about typical behaviour, not a guarantee for your jar, your fill depth and your room. Probe one jar per batch before you trust it across a production run.
My candle has a dip in the top but no hole underneath. Is that the same thing?
It is the mild version — the same contraction, but the crust stayed soft long enough to settle evenly instead of bridging over a void. A shallow dish is mostly cosmetic and fills with about ₹4.79 of wax on a 200 g candle. If you would rather not re-pour, a surface reflow levels it; just confirm with a skewer that there is nothing hollow underneath first.
