Which load is better, 6%, 8% or 10%? Whichever one wins a blind test in your own wax. If you have not tested, start at 8%: it sits inside every stated load range CSI publishes, it is affordable, and it leaves you room to move in both directions.

What does the difference cost? Going from 6% to 10% on 100 × 200 g candles costs ₹3,770.88 more in CSI 464 with Lavender — less than the oil alone, because you also buy 8 g less wax per candle.
Is 10% always the strongest? No. 10% puts the most oil in the jar. Cure, wick and pool area decide how much of it reaches the room — which is why the test below is blind and cured, not sniffed off a warm pour.
The short answer
Check both ceilings before you choose: your wax states one and your oil's page states one. CSI 464 states up to 10%, so 10% is its top. Lavender states 6–10% for candles. Both agree, so all three loads are available to you.
Then run three loads side by side: nine 120 g jars, three per load, one wax, one oil, one wick size, scored blind at day 14.
Then pick the cheapest load that ties: if 8% scores within one point of 10%, pour 8% and keep ₹1,885.44 per 100 candles.
Bar length is total materials — wax plus oil — for 100 × 200 g candles at CSI 464's ₹507.40 per kilo and Lavender's ₹5,221 per kilo. The steps are even because each two-point move swaps exactly 4 g of wax for 4 g of oil per candle. What is not even is the payoff, and that is what the test is for.
Is 6%, 8% or 10% fragrance load better — and how do I decide without guessing?
There is no universally better load, and anyone who gives you one number without asking what wax you pour is guessing. What there is, is a cheap experiment that settles it permanently for your recipe. On a 200 g candle the three loads are 12 g, 16 g and 20 g of oil against 188 g, 184 g and 180 g of wax. Across 100 candles in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹507.40 a kilo) with Lavender Fragrance Oil (₹5,221 a kilo) that is ₹15,804.32, ₹17,689.76 and ₹19,575.20 of materials — a spread of ₹3,770.88, or ₹37.71 a candle. Before you choose, check two published numbers: your wax's stated load and your oil page's stated candle load. CSI 464 states up to 10%; Lavender states 6–10% for candles; so all three loads are open. Then pour nine 120 g jars — three at each load, same wax, same oil, same Eco Candle Wick, same jar — cure the full fortnight, and have someone else hide the labels before you score them. Percentages are an argument. Grams are a decision you can weigh out.
Almost every disagreement about load is really a disagreement about arithmetic. So before anything else, here are the three loads as weights. This series calculates load the way the CSI load-and-throw guide does — as a share of the finished candle. A 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g of oil plus 184 g of wax, and the two add up to the 200 g the customer holds.

The other convention, stated once so it never confuses you again
Some product pages express load as a share of wax weight instead. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page words its range as "8% to 13% of total wax weight", and several oil pages say "of total wax weight" too. The two conventions are close but not identical: 10% of wax weight is 9.09% of the finished candle, because 100 g of wax plus 10 g of oil is a 110 g candle. Pick one convention, write it at the top of your recipe card, and never mix them inside a batch. The full derivation is in how to calculate fragrance load for candles.
Notice the last column. The entire argument between 6% and 10% is 8 g of oil on a 200 g candle — about a teaspoon and a half. That is small enough that people dismiss it and large enough that it moves both your cost and your candle. Which is exactly why it deserves a test rather than an opinion.
What each load is actually good at
Load is not a quality dial where higher means better. It changes how much oil the wax has to dissolve and hold, and each of the three levels has a set of jobs it does well. Read the table as a shortlist of hypotheses to test, not as a verdict.

The mistake that makes this whole comparison meaningless. Judging three loads at 48 hours. Fragrance perception changes across the cure, and a 6% jar at day 18 can beat a 10% jar at day 3 — which means a rushed test will send you to the wrong load and cost you money on every candle afterwards. Cure all nine jars together, in the same carton, with lids on, and burn them on the same day. Why the fortnight matters is set out in why your candle needs a 14-day cure.
One more honest point about the 6% column. It exists because light, volatile accords can be legible at low concentration and shrill at high concentration. Citrus Lemon, whose page describes "Top Notes Zesty lemon, lime — sharp, bright, immediately energising" over a mandarin finish and states a candle load of 6–10%, is precisely the kind of oil where the cheapest arm of the test can win outright. Do not assume the bottom of the range is the beginner's setting. Sometimes it is the right answer.
The cost of the decision, per 100 candles
Here is the arithmetic in full, because the number that decides most production runs is not the percentage — it is the difference in rupees when you multiply it by a hundred. All figures are CSI live pricing, September 2026, on a 200 g candle in CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo (₹0.5074 per gram).

Worked out above: per 100 candles, wax = 100 × wax grams × ₹0.5074, oil = 100 × oil grams × the kilo price ÷ 1,000. At 6%: 18,800 g wax = ₹9,539.12, plus 1,200 g oil. At 8%: 18,400 g = ₹9,336.16, plus 1,600 g. At 10%: 18,000 g = ₹9,133.20, plus 2,000 g. Lavender at ₹5.221 a gram therefore contributes ₹6,265.20, ₹8,353.60 and ₹10,442. Two findings in that table are worth pinning to the wall. First, the price of the oil decides how much the decision matters. On Citrus Lemon the whole 6%-to-10% question is worth ₹1,859.68 across a hundred candles — barely more than the test basket, so just test at 10% and be done. On Dark Vanilla the same question is worth ₹5,710.88, which is three times the cost of testing properly and more than enough to justify a careful, cured, blind comparison before you commit.
Second, and less obvious: raising the load makes the wax line fall. Every gram of oil you add is a gram of wax you do not buy. Moving from 6% to 10% on a hundred 200 g candles adds ₹4,176.80 of Lavender but removes ₹405.92 of CSI 464, so the net cost is ₹3,770.88 rather than ₹4,176.80. It is a rebate of about 10% on the decision, and it gets bigger the more expensive your wax is relative to your oil. On CSI 468 at ₹650 a kilo the wax rebate over the same move is ₹520.
Cost the decision once, at your real volume
Take your monthly candle count, multiply the per-candle gap by it, and write the annual figure on the recipe card. At 200 candles a month, the 8%-to-10% step on Lavender is ₹3,770.88 a month and ₹45,250.56 a year. That is the number that should decide whether you run the test — and, if you do run it, whether the winning margin was real.
Which loads your wax and your oil allow
Before you test three loads, confirm all three are available to you, because a load is only usable if both published figures reach it: the wax's stated fragrance load and the oil page's stated candle load. The lower of the two is your working ceiling. Those are formulation figures published by the maker of each material — they describe how much oil the wax is built to hold and the rate the oil is recommended at. They are not regulatory limits, and CSI never recommends pouring above the lower of them.

Which of 6%, 8% and 10% each wax page puts on the table
A wax with no stated load is not a wax with no limit.Eco Soy CSI 400 publishes an add temperature and a stirring time but no maximum load. That silence is not permission — it simply means the number you would normally work to is not there, so the conservative arm of the test becomes your reference. On a wax with no published ceiling, run 6% and 8% first and only add a 10% arm once the lower two have burned clean and cured well.
The oil side is just as concrete, and it is the half most makers never read. Of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages, 72 state a candle load and 58 of those cap it at 10% — the most common phrasings being "Up to 10% for soy wax" and "6–10% of total wax weight". Lavender states "6–10% for candles, 10–15% for wax melts". British Rose states "Soy Candles Up to 10% Of total wax weight. Cure 48–72 hours before burn testing." Fresh Strawberries is tighter still at "6–9% of total wax weight for candles" — which quietly removes the 10% arm from your test.

Wax-melt figures are routinely higher than candle figures on the same page — 10–15% is common, and some pages go to 12% for melts. A maker who copies the melt number into a candle is not raising their load, they are exceeding a published recommendation by accident. The nine-jar blind test that settles it
This is the part that turns an argument into an answer. Nine jars, three loads, one variable. The discipline that makes it worth doing is that you do not know which jar is which when you score it — because knowing you are holding the 10% jar is enough to make you smell more in it.

Write the nine recipes before you melt anythingThree jars at 6% (112.8 g wax + 7.2 g oil each), three at 8% (110.4 g + 9.6 g), three at 10% (108 g + 12 g). That is 993.6 g of wax and 86.4 g of oil in total, which is why one kilo and one 100 g bottle are the right packs. Number the jar bases 1–9 in pencil and keep the key on paper, not on the jar.

Melt in three small batches, not one big oneMelt 338.4 g, 331.2 g and 324 g of CSI 464 separately and add 21.6 g, 28.8 g and 36 g of Lavender to them. One pot per load stops you dosing a load twice, and it lets you pour all three jars of a load from the same well-stirred melt so they really are triplicates.

Hold the temperature and the stir identical across all threeCSI 464's page states melt and pour at 80–90°C; add the oil inside that band and stir a full two minutes, which is the technique the Eco Soy CSI 400 page specifies and good practice on any soy. Write down the actual reading for each pot. Cure all nine together for 14 daysLids on, one closed carton, room temperature, out of sunlight, all poured the same evening. Two weeks is the standard practice for soy containers in this series, and it is also roughly where most soy candles stop changing week to week. Do not open the carton to "check" — you are sampling the cure every time you do.

Score cold throw blind, then burn blindHave someone else cover the numbers and re-letter the jars A–I. Score each on cold throw at arm's length, then burn three at a time for three hours in the same room with the windows shut, scoring at 30 and 120 minutes. Reset your nose between jars: two minutes outside, or coffee beans. Only after all nine scores are written does anyone reveal the key.

Average each load's three jars and apply the tie ruleThree jars per load exist so that one odd jar cannot decide a ₹3,770.88 question. Average the three. Then pick the cheapest load whose average is within one point of the best average. If 8% averages 4.1 and 10% averages 4.4, pour 8% — the gap is inside the noise of a nine-jar test and the saving is ₹1,885.44 per hundred candles.
Do not change the wick between arms. It is tempting to "give the 10% jar a thicker wick so it burns properly". The moment you do, you have run two experiments at once and can attribute the result to neither. Wick first at 8% until a jar reaches a full pool cleanly, then fix that wick and vary only the load. If the 10% arm then burns badly, that is a finding: at this load in this jar the wick needs re-testing, which is the subject of wrong wick size is killing your hot throw.
A word on how to score. Use the same five-point scale for every jar and every rater: 1 = you must put your nose in the jar, 2 = noticeable at arm's length, 3 = noticeable across a small room, 4 = fills a small room, 5 = fills a room and is noticed by someone who did not know a candle was lit. That last rung is the one customers actually pay for, and it is the only rung that is hard to fake. Note soot, mushrooming and minutes to a full melt pool alongside the scent scores, because a load that wins on smell and loses on burn has not won.

Run the test on an oil you intend to sell, not on a curiosity. These three are stocked in every size from a trial bottle to a kilo, state a candle load on their pages, and between them cover the three places where the 6-versus-8-versus-10 question usually lands. Lavender Fragrance Oil
It carries more published customer reviews than any other oil in the range, which makes it the sane choice for a test whose whole purpose is to remove doubt. Its page states a candle load of 6–10% — exactly the span of this comparison — and describes lavender top notes, herbal green mid notes and a soft musk base. One CSI customer, Akansha, writes: "Fragrance is awesome. Hot throw is also very good after burn candle." The cheapest kilo in the candle range at ₹2,832, and the case study for why higher is not automatically better. Its page states "Top Notes Zesty lemon, lime — sharp, bright, immediately energising", a bright grapefruit and orange heart and a tangy mandarin base, with a candle load of 6–10%. Bright top-weighted accords can read as sharp rather than strong when you push them, and at this price the whole 6%-to-10% question is worth only ₹1,859.68 per hundred candles — cheap enough that many makers simply test the top of the range and move on. At ₹7,646 a kilo this is where load discipline turns into margin. The 6%-to-10% gap here is ₹5,710.88 per hundred candles — more than three times the cost of the nine-jar test — so this is the oil to test properly rather than default upward on. Its page states a candle load of 6–10% and answers its own discolouration question with a plain yes, so plan for a warm-toned candle or a coloured vessel rather than expecting a white one. One reviewer calls it "One of the best fragrance oils".

The CSI principle
A load is not better because it is higher. It is better because it won, and only a blind test can tell you that it did.
Every maker who has ever raised their load and felt an improvement was also holding a candle they had cured for two more weeks than the last one. Nine jars, three loads, one day of scoring — and you never have to have this argument again.
Once the test has named your load, the order gets simple: one wax, one wick size, and a 500 g or 1 kg bottle of the scent that won. A test is only useful if you have decided in advance how you will read it. Write these three rules on the score sheet before you burn anything, because deciding afterwards is how makers talk themselves into the expensive arm.

The tie rulePour the cheapest load whose average score is within one point of the best. A one-point margin over three jars is not a reliable difference, and paying ₹1,885.44 per hundred candles for it is buying noise.

The one-oil ruleThe answer belongs to that oil in that wax in that jar. It does not transfer. A woody oil, a coconut-soy wax or a 300 g vessel is a new question — a cheaper one, because you already own the scale, the thermometer and the method.
What most makers do with the answer is the interesting part. If 8% wins or ties, you have a default for your whole range and a documented reason for it, which is worth more than the rupees. If 10% wins clearly, you have learned something specific about that oil and you should expect to re-test the wick, because more oil in the pool changes the burn. And if 6% wins — which happens more often than makers expect on citrus, mint and light florals — you have just found a saving of ₹3,770.88 per hundred candles that also makes the candle better. That is the only kind of cost reduction worth having.
One test, one scent — but the method scales. Running this on four scents sounds like four times the work. It is not: the wax, the jars, the wicks and the instruments are shared, and only the oil changes. Four scents at nine jars each is 36 jars, about 4 kg of wax and roughly 350 g of oil — and it produces a load table for your entire range. Is 10% fragrance load better than 8%?
It puts 25% more oil in the candle — 20 g instead of 16 g on a 200 g candle — and costs ₹1,885.44 more per hundred candles in CSI 464 with Lavender. Whether that reads as stronger depends on the oil, the cure and the wick. On base-heavy woody and gourmand accords it often does; on sharp citrus it often does not. Run three jars at each and score them blind at day 14. And check your wax: CSI 464 states up to 10%, so 10% is its stated maximum, not a step on the way up.
How much fragrance oil is 8% in a 200 g candle?
16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, calculated as a share of the finished candle. At 6% it is 12 g and 188 g; at 10%, 20 g and 180 g. If your wax page words its range as a share of wax weight instead — as the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page does — then 8% of 184 g of wax is 14.72 g, a slightly lower dose. Choose one convention and write it on the recipe card. Weigh both components; do not measure oil by volume.
Can I use 6% fragrance load and still have a candle that sells?
Yes, particularly with bright citrus, mint, eucalyptus and light florals, in small rooms and small vessels. 6% is 12 g in a 200 g candle and saves ₹3,770.88 per hundred candles against 10% on Lavender. What it cannot survive is a short cure or an undersized wick, because it has less margin for error. Check that your oil page allows it — most CSI pages that state a range start at 6%, and Fresh Strawberries states 6–9%.
Which fragrance load should a beginner start with?

Does a higher fragrance load make a candle burn differently?
It can, which is why the burn veto matters. More oil in the wax changes what the wick is drawing up and how the pool behaves, so a wick that is correct at 6% is not automatically correct at 10%. Symptoms to watch for at the top of a range are a flame that struggles, mushrooming, soot, or a pool that never reaches the glass. Wick-test at your chosen load, not at a different one — the mechanics are in wick sizing and fragrance load.
