When to Buy Bulk · The 1 kg Fragrance Question
The title assumes the kilo is much cheaper per gram. On CSI's listed prices that is true for a minority of oils and false for most. So the honest answer comes in two parts: which oils actually save, and, for those, how quickly you need to use a kilo for the saving to be worth holding it.
52 of 91
CSI oils listing both sizes whose 1 kg costs within 1% of the 100 g per gram · only 24 save 5% or more, and 19 of those are buyable at both sizes · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Is 1 kg fragrance oil much cheaper per gram than 100 g? Usually not. Of 91 CSI oils listing both sizes, 52 cost within 1% per gram, 15 save 1–5%, and 24 save 5% or more. Four save 20% or more: Citronella (62.3%), Honeydew Melon (22.0%), Mango Coconut (20.7%) and Verbena (20.0%).

How fast must I use it for the kilo to pay? For an oil with a real saving, not fast: at an example 1.5% a month holding cost, British Rose's kilo pays once you use about 59 g a month (3.7 candles). For Lavender (3.3% saving) you would need about 197 g. For flat oils, it never pays on price.

So what limits the kilo? Demand and freshness, not holding cost. A kilo is 62.5 candles at 16 g each. If a scent sells 10 candles a month, that is more than six months of one oil. Ask CSI for the oil's storage and shelf-life guidance, and cap the months you hold.

What is the reliable saving then? Moving off 15 g testers. The 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium per gram over the same oil's 100 g. Lavender is ₹7.00 a gram at 15 g and ₹5.40 at 100 g. See the step that always pays.
The short answer
Premise check: 1 kg vs 100 g per gram: 52 oils within ±1%, 15 save 1–5%, 10 save 5–10%, 10 save 10–20%, 4 save 20% or more. Five of the 24 savers are out of stock at 100 g, 1 kg or both.
When to move: Saver oils: once you use more than a few candles' worth a month and will sell a kilo within your freshness cap. Flat oils: only for convenience or stock security.
One oil at 500 g a month: I Use 500 g of One Fragrance Oil Every Month — When Should I Stop Buying 100 g Bottles and Move to 500 g or 1 Kg Packs? works the 100 g → 500 g → 1 kg move for one oil, including oils where 500 g beats 1 kg.
Is the 1 kg cheaper per gram than the 100 g? 91 CSI oils that list both sizes Oils by how much cheaper the 1 kg is per gram (CSI live pricing, 24 Sep 2026). Dark bars = 5% or more. 52 Kilo within ±1% 15 1–5% cheaper 10 5–10% cheaper 10 10–20% cheaper 4 20% or more 24 oils save 5% or more · 19 buyable at both sizes 67 oils save under 5% at the kilo
Most CSI oils are priced almost linearly from 100 g to 1 kg: the tall pale bar. The kilo is "much cheaper" only for the 24 oils in the three dark bars, and five of those are out of stock at 100 g, 1 kg or both on the pull date. Check your own oil before planning around a kilo saving.
Straight answer
A 1 kg fragrance oil is much cheaper per gram than 100 g. How quickly should I be using a fragrance before moving to the larger pack?
First, check the premise, because for most oils it is not true. On CSI's listed prices, pulled 24 September 2026, 52 of the 91 oils that list both sizes cost within 1% per gram at 1 kg and 100 g. Only 24 save 5% or more, and five of those are out of stock at one size or both. For a flat-priced oil such as Blue Ocean (₹4.95 a gram at 100 g, ₹4.96 at 1 kg), there is no usage speed at which the kilo saves money; buy it only for convenience or stock security. For a real saver the answer is slower than you would think. Moving from 100 g bottles bought as needed to a 1 kg bottle adds about 450 g of average stock. At an example holding cost of 1.5% a month, British Rose (10.3% saving) pays for that once you use about 59 g a month, a few candles' worth; Citronella (62.3%) at about 4 g. So for savers, money is rarely the limit. Demand and freshness are. A kilo is 62.5 candles at 16 g each. Move to the kilo when you will sell that many candles of the scent within the number of months you are comfortable holding one oil, and ask CSI for its storage guidance.
One line: for most oils the kilo is not cheaper per gram, so no speed makes it pay — for the 24 that are, sell 62.5 candles of the scent within your freshness cap and it does.
The biggest kilo saving in the catalogue: Citronella at ₹2,891.00 a kilo (₹2.89 a gram) against ₹767.00 for 100 g (₹7.67 a gram), 62.3% less per gram. Ten 100 g bottles would cost ₹7,670.00. At 16 g a candle, the kilo puts ₹46.26 of oil in each candle.

Checking the premise, oil by oil

"The kilo is much cheaper per gram" is the most common assumption in fragrance buying. On our list it is right about one time in four.

Ninety-one oils in CSI's Fragrance Oils collection list both a 100 g and a 1 kg. Dividing each price by its grams and comparing the two gives the spread in the diagram above. For 52 oils the kilo is within 1% of the 100 g per gram: ten 100 g bottles cost within a rupee or two per 100 g of one kilo. Another 15 save between 1% and 5%. Only 24 save 5% or more: 10 between 5% and 10%, 10 between 10% and 20%, and 4 at 20% or more. A few oils run slightly the other way, such as Dahlia (BBW Inspired), Love Spell and Pomegranate Splash, whose kilo costs fractionally more per gram than the 100 g.

100 g vs 1 kg per gram · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · holding at example 1.5% a month
Flat-priced oils: what the kilo saves, and the usage it would need
Oil ₹/g at 100 g ₹/g at 1 kg Saving 10 × 100 g minus 1 kg Usage a month for the kilo to pay
Lavender ₹5.40 ₹5.22 3.3% ₹179.00 197 g (12.3 candles)
Dark Vanilla ₹7.90 ₹7.65 3.2% ₹254.00 203 g (12.7 candles)
Sandalwood ₹5.03 ₹5.03 0.0% ₹0.00 Never on price
Blue Ocean ₹4.95 ₹4.96 -0.1% -₹6.00 Never on price
Wild Berries ₹5.99 ₹6.00 -0.2% -₹9.00 Never on price
Love Spell ₹4.49 ₹4.50 -0.2% -₹9.00 Never on price

Look at the last column. For Blue Ocean, Wild Berries and Love Spell, the kilo is no cheaper per gram, so no usage makes it pay on price. For Sandalwood it saves nothing at all. For Lavender (₹5.40 against ₹5.22) and Dark Vanilla (₹7.90 against ₹7.65), the small saving only covers the kilo's extra holding once you use around 197 g and 203 g a month respectively, at the example rate. For these oils the money is marginal at best. Move to the kilo because reordering 100 g bottles every week is a nuisance, or because you cannot afford to run out, not because the kilo is cheaper.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell the 1 kg. For most of our oils it is not meaningfully cheaper per gram than the 100 g, and this page says so and names the oils. If your best-seller is one of the 52 flat-priced oils, ten 100 g bottles bought as you need them cost almost the same and keep less cash on your shelf. Buy the kilo when your reorder rhythm or stock security calls for it, and when the oil is one of the savers, buy it for the money too.

The 24 oils where the kilo saves

Here is every oil whose 1 kg costs at least 5% less per gram than its 100 g on the pull date, in order of saving. The usage column is the monthly amount at which the kilo's saving covers the cost of holding it, at an example holding rate of 1.5% a month (18% a year, a placeholder for your own cost of money). The stock column matters: 19 of the 24 are buyable at both sizes. An out-of-stock size is not a price you can plan around.

Every break-even in the table is small: a few candles' worth of oil a month. That is the arithmetic of a big saving against a modest holding rate. Buying a kilo instead of 100 g bottles as you need them adds about 450 g of average stock, and at 1.5% a month that costs a few rupees a month; a 10% saving on even 100 g of use a month is worth more. So for the savers, holding cost is almost never the reason not to buy the kilo. The reason not to is further down the page: how long the kilo would sit if the scent sells slowly.

Some savers break at 500 g, not 1 kg
For several of these oils the whole saving arrives at 500 g: Mango Coconut, Honeydew Melon, Lemongrass and Lime and Fallen Leaves cost the same per gram at 500 g as at 1 kg. For those, the 500 g gives you the saving with half the stock. I Use 500 g of One Fragrance Oil Every Month — When Should I Stop Buying 100 g Bottles and Move to 500 g or 1 Kg Packs? works through the 500 g step and the two oils (Saffron Cedarwood, Sage and Cedarwood) whose kilo is dearer than two 500 g bottles.

How fast is fast enough

Turn usage into candles and time. At 16 g of oil per 200 g candle (8% load), a kilo is 62.5 candles and a 100 g bottle 6.25. Here is how long one kilo of one scent lasts at different sales rates.

1 kg ÷ (candles a month × 16 g) · 200 g candle at 8% load
How long a kilo of one scent lasts
Candles of this scent a month Oil a month Months one kilo lasts 100 g bottles a month instead
10 160 g 6.2 1.6
20 320 g 3.1 3.2
30 480 g 2.1 4.8
45 720 g 1.4 7.2
60 960 g 1.0 9.6

Here is a worked comparison for a scent selling 30 candles a month (480 g of oil), which a kilo covers for 2.1 months. For British Rose, the kilo saves ₹169.92 a month against 100 g bottles and costs about ₹20.71 a month in extra holding: ₹149.21 a month net. For Citronella the net is ₹2,274.41 a month. For Lavender, the saving is ₹85.92 against ₹35.24 of holding: ₹50.68 a month. Cash on the day is the other difference: a British Rose kilo is ₹3,068.00 up front, against ₹342.20 for a single 100 g bottle.

The CSI principle
Check the oil's price per gram first. Speed only matters once there is a saving to protect.
For flat-priced oils, no usage speed makes the kilo cheaper. For the savers, almost any steady usage does, so the question becomes how many months of one scent you are willing to hold. Answer that with your sales data and the oil's storage guidance, not with the size of the discount.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Festive scents are where a kilo moves fastest, and where a kilo left over in December moves slowest. Buy the kilo of a festive saver such as Cinnamon or Pumpkin Spice (both 10.0% cheaper per gram at 1 kg) for the season you can see, not the next one. Quotes above 1 kg and IFRA documentation on WhatsApp.
Ask about festive oils on WhatsApp

The real limit: demand and freshness

The kilo's risk is not what it costs to hold. It is how long it sits if the scent stops selling.

A scent's sales can stall on their own, even while your business grows: a season ends, a stockist drops it, a new scent takes its customers. When that happens, a kilo bought at 30 candles a month can become a kilo used at 10, and 2.1 months of stock becomes 6.3. Set a cap on months of cover per scent, and move to the kilo only when the kilo fits inside it at your current, not forecast, sales. A cap of about three months is a sensible working starting point for most small businesses; adjust it to your cash and your experience. My Candle Sales Are Growing Every Month — How Do I Know When Buying Larger Raw-Material Quantities Saves Money Rather than Creating Excess Stock? explains the stall test in full.

Freshness sets the outer limit. In general practice fragrance oil is kept tightly capped, in the dark and away from heat, and a bottle opened daily is exposed to more air than a sealed one. Shelf life and storage guidance differ by oil and are not published in the data this page uses, so ask CSI on WhatsApp for the oil's documentation before you hold months of it. When a kilo arrives, decanting half into a clean, dry, well-sealed bottle keeps the second half closed until you need it. I Have 20 Fragrances but Only Five Are Bestsellers — Should I Buy 1 Kg Fragrance Oils Only for Those Five and Keep Smaller Quantities of the Rest? applies the cap across a whole fragrance range.

The mistake that looks like a bargain. Buying the kilo of a slow scent because it is one of the savers. Citronella's kilo is 62.3% cheaper per gram, but if you sell eight citronella candles a month it is nearly eight months of one oil. Buy it if your freshness cap and your seasonal sales can carry it. If not, the 500 g at ₹1,475.00 (₹2.95 a gram) gives almost the whole saving with half the stock.
1
Price your oil at 100 g and 1 kgDivide each by its grams. If the kilo is within about 1%, it will not save money at any speed.
2
Check stock at both sizesFive of the 24 savers are out of stock at one size or both on the pull date. Plan around sizes you can buy.
3
Check the 500 g tooSeveral savers break at 500 g. If the 500 g matches the kilo per gram, it halves your stock for the same rate.
4
Count your candles of that scentMonths a kilo lasts = 1,000 ÷ (candles a month × grams per candle). Use actual sales from the last three months.
5
Apply your capIf the kilo fits inside your months-of-cover cap, and the oil is a saver, buy it. If it is a flat oil, buy it only if the convenience is worth the cash.
6
Ask above 1 kgFor more than a kilo a month of one scent, ask CSI on WhatsApp for a price per gram. No volume discount figure is published.

The step that always pays

If the kilo saves money on only a quarter of oils, the 15 g → 100 g step saves on almost all of them. Of 55 oils listing both a 15 g and a 100 g, the 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium per gram. At 16 g a candle, pouring Lavender from 15 g testers costs ₹112.02 of oil per candle against ₹86.40 from the 100 g, ₹25.62 more on every candle. Any production still poured from testers should move to 100 g before you think about kilos.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The title assumes the kilo is much cheaper; agreeing would sell more kilos. Our own listed prices say that is true for 24 of 91 oils and not for the rest, so this page checks the premise first, lists every saver with its stock status, and names flat-priced oils where the kilo saves nothing.

Every oil price on this page is CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026, across the Fragrance Oils collection. Saving percentages for the 24 savers are as listed in our pricing data; out-of-stock sizes are flagged, not offered. Per-gram prices, break-even usage and months of cover are arithmetic on those prices, shown so you can check them.

The 16 g per 200 g candle, the 450 g of extra average stock, the example holding cost of 1.5% a month and the three-month cap are working assumptions, not facts about your business or the oils. Storage notes are general practice; ask for the oil's documentation. For a quote above 1 kg, MSDS or IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
