Formulation Cost · Cost per Candle
Price one kilo of finished candle — wax and fragrance together — not one kilo of wax. With Jasmine, Natural Soy Pearl at ₹424.80/kg stays cheaper than CSI 464 at 8% only while it needs no more than 10.17%. The dearer the oil, the smaller that margin.
10.17%
highest Soy Pearl load that still beats CSI 464 at 8%, Jasmine at its 1 kg rate · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I compare total formulation cost? Formulation ₹/kg = (1 − load) × wax ₹/kg + load × oil ₹/kg, each wax at the load it needs. Lowest number wins; wick and jar cancel out.

How much more oil can the cheaper wax afford? Against CSI 464 at 8%, Natural Soy Pearl breaks even at 11.16% with Citrus Lemon, 10.17% with Jasmine and 8.32% with Club De Nuit Inspired.

Why does the oil matter so much? At 8% in CSI 464, fragrance is 33% of the wax + oil cost with Citrus Lemon and 80% with Club De Nuit. Load moves cost more than wax price does.

How do I know the load gap is real? A blind load ladder: the cheaper wax at 8%, 9% and 10% against the dearer wax at 8%. See the test.
The short answer
Answer: Compare formulation cost per kilo of finished candle, not wax price. With Jasmine, Soy Pearl (₹424.80/kg) is cheaper than CSI 464 (₹507.40/kg) at 8% only up to 10.17% load.
Why: Each extra load point swaps 10 g of wax for 10 g of oil per kilo. Oil costs several times more per gram, so a small load gap can cancel a large wax discount.
Method: Price both formulas at production pack sizes, check both use the finished-weight load convention, then measure the load gap with a blind ladder. The cost-per-candle hub.
Where the formulation money actually goes 200 g candle at 8% in CSI 464 (₹507.40/kg): 184 g wax + 16 g oil · oil at its 1 kg rate ₹93.36 ₹45.31 Citrus Lemon oil 33% of cost ₹93.36 ₹62.77 Jasmine oil 40% of cost ₹93.36 ₹83.54 Lavender oil 47% of cost ₹93.36 ₹145.92 Santal Noir oil 61% of cost ₹93.36 ₹384.90 Club De Nuit oil 80% of cost fragrance oil (16 g) wax (184 g) Soy Pearl saves ₹15.20 of wax per candle. Two extra load points cost 4 g of oil: ₹11.33 with Citrus Lemon, ₹15.69 with Jasmine, ₹96.22 with Club De Nuit.
Wax and oil cost in one 200 g candle at 8% in CSI 464, for five CSI oils at their 1 kg rates. The wax part is the same in every bar; the oil part grows with the oil's price until it dominates. That is why a cheaper wax needing a higher load loses ground fastest with expensive oils.
Straight answer
A cheaper soy wax needs more fragrance oil to achieve the strength I want — how do I compare total formulation cost rather than wax price alone?
Price one kilo of finished candle — wax and oil together — at the load each wax needs. Formulation cost per kg = (1 − load) × wax ₹/kg + load × oil ₹/kg. Each extra load point swaps 10 g of wax for 10 g of oil in every kilo, and oil costs several times more per gram, so the load gap usually outweighs the wax discount. Worked with CSI prices: Natural Soy Pearl (₹424.80/kg at 5 kg) against CSI 464 (₹507.40/kg) at 8%, with Jasmine at ₹3.92/g, the cheaper wax stays cheaper only up to 10.17%. With Citrus Lemon it can go to 11.16%; with Club De Nuit Inspired only to 8.32%. Check that both recipes use the same load convention (share of finished weight), price at production pack sizes, then measure the real gap with a blind load ladder — the cheaper wax at 8%, 9% and 10% against the dearer wax at 8%. CSI publishes no dosage data; your test decides it.
One line: a wax discount is worth only as many load points as the oil price allows — and with premium oils that is less than one.
Testing whether the cheaper wax really needs more oil — Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8% as the control, Natural Soy Pearl Wax at 8%, 9% and 10%, all with Jasmine — costs ₹3,653.40 in CSI materials. Soy Pearl is ₹82.60 a kilo cheaper at the 5 kg bag; the test shows how much of that survives the extra oil.

Compare the formula, not the wax: price the whole kilo of candle

A candle is not made of wax. It is made of wax and fragrance, in a ratio — and the ratio is where the money is.

The cleanest way to compare a cheap wax that needs more oil with a dearer wax that needs less is to stop pricing the wax and start pricing the formulation: the cost of one kilo of finished candle mix, wax and fragrance together. Formulation cost per kg = (1 − load) × wax ₹/kg + load × oil ₹/kg. Both waxes go through the same formula with their own load, and the lower number wins. Wick and jar are the same for both, so they stay out of this comparison.

Run it once and the pattern is obvious. With Jasmine Fragrance Oil at its 1 kg rate of ₹3.92 a gram, a kilo of CSI 464 mix at 8% costs ₹780.65. A kilo of Natural Soy Pearl mix at 8% costs ₹704.66 — cheaper, as you would expect from a wax ₹82.60 a kilo cheaper. But at 10% the Soy Pearl kilo costs ₹774.62, more than CSI 464 at 8%. The crossover is 10.17%: if Soy Pearl needs more than that to reach your strength, the cheaper wax makes the dearer candle.

That crossover moves with the oil. For Citrus Lemon at ₹2.83 a gram the cheaper wax can go to 11.16%; for Santal Noir at ₹9.12 only to 8.87%; for Club De Nuit Intense Inspired at ₹24.06 only to 8.32%. The dearer your oil, the less extra load a cheap wax can afford. CSI publishes no dosage or throw data, so whether Soy Pearl needs any extra load at all is something your test establishes.

The CSI principle
Price the kilo of candle, not the kilo of wax. The oil sets the exchange rate.
Formulation cost per kg = (1 − load) × wax price + load × oil price. A cheap wax is cheap only while the extra oil it needs costs less than the wax it saves.

The formulation-cost grid, load by load

The grid below is the lead table for this question. It prices one kilo of finished candle mix — wax plus Jasmine — at loads from 6% to 12%, for both waxes at their 5 kg bag rates. CSI's product page for CSI 464 states a fragrance load up to 10%, so its rows stop there. Natural Soy Pearl has no ceiling published; the 11% and 12% rows are shown only to make the arithmetic visible — confirm the wax maker's maximum on the product page or on WhatsApp before you pour anything above your usual load.

12% ₹844.58 · no ceiling published — confirm first above CSI 464's stated 10% ceiling — not used ₹168.92

Each load point adds ₹34.98 to a kilo of Soy Pearl mix with Jasmine — ten grams of oil at ₹3.92 replacing ten grams of wax at ₹0.42. That is the exchange rate. The wax price gap is worth ₹75.99 on a kilo of mix at 8%, so the cheaper wax can absorb 2.17 load points before it stops being cheaper — which is the 10.17% crossover expressed another way.

Read the fourth column carefully, because it explains the whole page. Even with a budget citrus, fragrance is a large slice of the formulation cost; with a mid-priced floral it is about half; with a premium perfume-inspired oil it is most of it. When oil dominates the cost, a change in load matters far more than a change in wax price. The ₹450-at-8% versus cheaper-at-10% hub works the same exchange rate for a reader's own prices.

Pricing the formula at the test-bottle rate. Makers often run this comparison with the price of the 100 g bottle they tested with. For many oils, 15 g is markedly dearer per gram than 100 g; above 100 g, most CSI oils are priced almost linearly (52 of 91 oils are within ±1% between 100 g and 1 kg). Jasmine is one of the oils with a real step: ₹4.30 a gram at 100 g against ₹3.92 at 1 kg. Priced at the 100 g rate (and 1 kg wax bags), the break-even load moves to 9.37%. Fix: price the formula at the pack sizes you will buy in production, and say which ones you used.

Check the load convention before you compare anything

Two makers can both say "8%" and be using different amounts of oil.

A surprising number of "this wax needs more oil" conclusions come from a convention mix-up, not from the wax. CSI's convention — used on every page in this series — is that load is a share of the finished candle weight: a 200 g candle at 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Some makers instead add the percentage to the wax weight: 8% of 184 g is 14.72 g of oil, which is a true load of only 7.41%. If you compared two waxes using different conventions — one recipe from a supplier sheet, one from your own notebook — the "cheaper wax needs more oil" gap may be partly arithmetic.

When you start from a fixed wax weight and want a true finished-weight load, the formula is oil = wax × L ÷ (1 − L). For a 1 kg batch of wax at a true 8%, that is 86.96 g of oil, not 80 g. Write the convention at the top of every recipe card, and make sure both waxes in a comparison use the same one. Comparing waxes at their own optimal loads uses the same convention for loads up to 13%.

One sentence on the recipe card
"Load = oil ÷ finished candle weight." Put it above the ingredient list. It costs nothing and it prevents the commonest formulation mistake in the whole comparison.

Measuring how much oil the cheaper wax really needs

Everything above is a target. The measurement is a short load ladder in the cheaper wax, compared blind against the dearer wax at your current load. The question the test answers is narrow and useful: what is the lowest load at which Soy Pearl matches CSI 464 at 8% for this oil? If the answer is 8%, the cheaper wax wins outright. If it is 9% or 10%, the tables above tell you whether it still wins.

1
Fix the control3 candles of CSI 464 at 8% (16 g Jasmine + 184 g wax). CSI's product page states a load up to 10% for CSI 464, so the control sits inside the ceiling. If CSI 464 is not your current wax, use whichever wax you sell now as the control.
2
Pour the ladder in the cheaper wax3 candles each of Natural Soy Pearl at 8% (16 g + 184 g), 9% (18 g + 182 g) and 10% (20 g + 180 g). No ceiling is published for Soy Pearl; 10% is a labelled test point. Weigh oil to 0.1 g on a weighing scale — a 1 g error is half a load point here.
3
Keep everything else identicalSame Jasmine lot split across every candle, same Eco Thin C1 wick, same White Matte jar, same pour day. Follow each wax maker's temperatures; ask on WhatsApp for Soy Pearl, which has none published.
4
Cure to one checkpointFor example 7 days for every candle (a labelled checkpoint). A ladder judged at mixed cure ages measures cure, not load.
5
Score cold and hot throw blindAssessors who did not pour score each candle 0–5: cold throw with the lid off, hot throw at 1 m after a fixed time in a 3–4 hour burn (a commonly used cycle — label it as yours). Pair every ladder candle with a control in the same session.
6
Record safety on every burnHigher loads can change flame, soot and pool depth. Flame height, mushrooming, soot and a jar reading at the same point go on the sheet. A load that only matches throw by burning hotter is rejected.
7
Take the lowest matching load to the gridRead off the formulation cost at that load. If it is below CSI 464's cost at 8%, the cheaper wax wins for this oil.

Stopping the ladder at the first "strong enough". A maker pours only the cheaper wax at 10%, finds it strong, and concludes it "needs 10%". It may have matched at 8%. Fix: always pour the cheaper wax at the control's load as well. The 8% rung is the one that tells you whether there is a load gap at all — and if there is none, the cheaper wax saves the full ₹82.60 a kilo.

The kit uses the 1 kg Soy Pearl bag at ₹450.00 a kilo because the 5 kg bag would be wasted on a test; production would move to the 5 kg rate of ₹424.80. CSI 464's 579.6 g is just over one 500 g bag, and a single 1 kg bag (₹507.40) is cheaper than two 500 g bags (₹520.00). The Jasmine is bought as 2 × 100 g + 2 × 15 g — at test quantities the 100 g and 50 g bottles are the sensible sizes, and the formulation grid already uses the 1 kg production rate.

With the example result — Soy Pearl matching the control at 9% with Jasmine — the purchase is Natural Soy Pearl Wax in 5 kg bags at ₹2,124.00. In an example 400-candle month that saves ₹3,280.80 on materials against CSI 464 at 8%, and the month's 72.80 kg of wax is 15 bags of 5 kg. If your range includes premium oils, run the same ladder with one of them before you switch everything: with Santal Noir the break-even is only 8.87%, so a 9% result would make Soy Pearl the dearer formula for that SKU. Whether a dearer wax with fewer rejects improves margin adds the reject line to this decision.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Both waxes here are ours, and the cheaper one earns us less per kilo. If Soy Pearl matches your strength at the same or a slightly higher load, it makes the cheaper candle and you should buy it. And if it needs 10% with a premium oil, our cheaper wax is the expensive choice — we would rather you knew that before ordering 50 kg of it.

Applying the formula across a whole range

Most makers do not sell one oil. The same wax can be the cheaper formula for budget fragrances and the dearer formula for premium ones, because the exchange rate changes with each oil. That gives you a practical option the per-kilo comparison never shows: use the cheaper wax only where its load gap is affordable, or keep one wax and accept a known cost on some SKUs. The second is usually simpler to run — one wax, one wick programme, one stock line — and simplicity has its own value. When formulation complexity should influence your wax and whether easier pouring justifies a dearer wax cover that side.

If you do keep two waxes, keep the decision written down: oil, load in each wax, formulation cost per kilo, and the date of the test that justified it. When oil prices change — and per-gram prices do differ between pack sizes — re-run the grid rather than the test. The true commercial cost of a soy wax puts formulation, wicks, rejects and freight on a single sheet.

Formulation cost is one line of the full comparison, not the whole of it. If the dearer wax also throws better, valuing better hot throw shows how to price that; if the two waxes need different wicks, the wick-cost post adds the line; what ₹20, ₹50 or ₹100 a kilo does across 100 kg scales the wax gap up to a large order; and lowest ₹/kg versus lowest cost per saleable candle brings every line onto one sheet.

The cheapest wax is the one whose kilo of candle costs least at the strength you sell. Oil decides more of that than wax does.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell both waxes and every oil on this page, and the formula shows our cheaper wax losing with premium oils if it needs a higher load. We publish no dosage, throw or compatibility data for any oil in any wax, so the load gap is yours to measure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fragrance oil cost per candle?
Candle weight × load × oil price per gram. A 200 g candle at 8% uses 16 g; with Jasmine at ₹3.92/g (1 kg rate) that is ₹62.77. Use the per-gram price of the pack size you will buy in production.
Is cheap soy wax worth it if it needs more fragrance?
Only while the extra oil costs less than the wax saving. Against CSI 464 at 8%, Natural Soy Pearl can afford up to 11.16% with Citrus Lemon but only 8.87% with Santal Noir. Measure the load it really needs before deciding.
What is formulation cost in candle making?
The cost of the wax and fragrance in a given weight of finished candle: (1 − load) × wax price + load × oil price. It lets you compare two waxes at different loads on one number.
Is fragrance load a percentage of wax or of total weight?
CSI uses the share of the finished candle weight: 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax. Adding 8% of the wax weight gives a true load of about 7.41%. To hit a true load on a fixed wax weight, oil = wax × L ÷ (1 − L).
What is the maximum fragrance load for Natural Soy Pearl Wax?
No ceiling is published for Natural Soy Pearl. Check its product page or ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum before pouring above your usual load. CSI's pages state 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 468, and 10% for CSI 464.
Does a cheaper soy wax always need more fragrance?
No. Price per kilo says nothing about how a wax carries fragrance, and CSI publishes no data comparing its waxes on that. Pour the cheaper wax at your current load in a blind test — if it matches, there is no gap to pay for.
Price the whole formula
Cost the kilo of candle, check the convention, measure the load gap — then buy the wax that makes the cheaper formula.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (oil = W × L; 200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; at 9% = 18 g + 182 g; at 10% = 20 g + 180 g). Formulation cost per kg = (1 − L) × wax ₹/kg + L × oil ₹/kg. The 9% example result, the 400-candle month, three candles per rung, 3–4 hour burn cycles, a 7-day cure checkpoint and the 5% pour-loss allowance are labelled examples and working practices. CSI's product pages state these, and they are quoted as the pages' statements, not CSI test results: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% fragrance load; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no fragrance ceiling, melt point or pour temperature published. Loads above 10% appear for arithmetic only. Price-break statistics: 52 of 91 oils list a 1 kg per-gram price within ±1% of their 100 g price. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
