How much fragrance oil a Hyderabad candle business goes through
At an 8% load, every 200 g candle uses 16 g of oil, so each 1,000 candles needs 16 kg. The table turns candles a month into kilograms a month:
| Stage | Candles / month | Oil / month | Split |
|---|---|---|---|
| Home studio | 200 candles | 3.2 kg | 0.8 kg each across 4 oils |
| Growing brand | 500 candles | 8.0 kg | 2.0 kg each across 4 oils |
| Small manufacturer | 1,000 candles | 16.0 kg | 4.0 kg each across 4 oils |
| Festive peak | 2,500 candles | 40.0 kg | 10.0 kg each across 4 oils |
At an average of ₹4,137.25 per kilogram across the first four Hyderabad shortlist oils, 5 kg a month is about ₹20,686 and 10 kg about ₹41,372 of oil.
Reorder points: never run out mid-festival
Storing 5–10 kg of fragrance oil
Keep bottles sealed, upright, out of sunlight and off hot walls or rooftop rooms. Oil does not absorb moisture from the air, but heat and light shorten its life, and open bottles lose their top notes. Plan stock around April–May. A candle loaded right at the maximum can sweat in a hot storeroom; the fix is headroom in the formula and a cool shelf, not a different oil.
Decant a working bottle for daily use rather than opening the kilogram every day, and date every bottle on arrival so the oldest is used first. Storage for the rest of the workshop is in what humidity actually damages.
One Hyderabad buyer type, costed
HITEC City corporate-gifting vendor. Diwali and Sankranti employee gifts; one or two inoffensive scents in large batches.
Say that buyer pours 900 candles of 180 g. At 8% each candle takes 14.4 g of oil, so the run needs 12.96 kg — about 13.0 kg in total, split across however many scents the run carries. If it were all Sandalwood, the oil would cost about ₹65,147 at the 1 kg price.
| Oil | 1 kg | Oil per 180 g candle | Candles per kg | Oil for 900 (single scent) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sandalwood | ₹5,026.80 | ₹72.39 | 69 | ₹65,147.33 |
| Lemongrass and Lime | ₹5,200.00 | ₹74.88 | 69 | ₹67,392.00 |
| Jasmine | ₹3,923.00 | ₹56.49 | 69 | ₹50,842.08 |
A second Hyderabad buyer: festive and wedding-favour maker. Three peaks in four months — Bathukamma and Dasara, Diwali, Sankranti. Small votives in bulk. For 400 candles of 120 g at 8%, the oil comes to 3.84 kg — with Jasmine at ₹3,923.00 per kg, about ₹15,064.
What Hyderabad changes about bulk supply
Hyderabad is hot and dry in April–May with highs near 40°C, a June–September monsoon and mild, dry winters. Plan stock around April–May. A candle loaded right at the maximum can sweat in a hot storeroom; the fix is headroom in the formula and a cool shelf, not a different oil.
| Months | Conditions | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| March–May | Hot and dry, around 40°C | Keep a point of headroom under the stated maximum; store stock in the coolest room. |
| June–September | Monsoon | Seal wick and label stock; plan Bathukamma, Dasara and Diwali oil. |
| October–February | Mild, dry winters | Festive peak and wedding season; easy pouring conditions. |
With three festive peaks close together, reorder points matter more than order size: know how many kilograms of each best-seller you use in a festive week.
April–May heat in Hyderabad is dry rather than humid, so the risk is finished candles softening or sweating on a hot shelf, not packaging damage.
The city's long familiarity with attar makes it a natural market for oud, rose and resin candles at premium prices. Those profiles are heavier than florals, so test the wick carefully.
Hot pre-monsoon months reward a load slightly under the wax maker's maximum; winters are easy. Bathukamma and Dasara run through the Navratri fortnight, then Diwali, then Sankranti in January — three buying peaks in four months.

The two columns on the right of the calendar are working back from the festival: six weeks to test a new oil in your wax and jar, and four weeks to have production quantities on the shelf. They are planning margins, not delivery promises — transit time to Hyderabad is confirmed on WhatsApp when you order.

Assumptions: Candle maths use an illustrative 8% fragrance load by weight (16 g of oil and 184 g of wax in a 200 g candle), which is within the stated range of every oil on this page that publishes one; "per candle" material costs include oil, wax and wick only and exclude the vessel, label, packaging, labour, freight and GST. Wax stated fragrance maximums are the wax maker's formulation limits, not regulatory limits. Worked examples (e.g. "a Banjara Hills boutique building an oud-and-rose range") are illustrations, not customers. Per-gram comparisons use listed prices only.
Calendar: Navratri begins 11 October 2026; Dussehra 20 October 2026; Dhanteras 6 November 2026; Diwali 8 November 2026; Makar Sankranti / Pongal mid-January 2027.
