Fragrance Load × Capillary Flow
A higher load makes every gram of blend carry more fragrance. It can also thicken the blend, slow its climb up the reeds and clog them over weeks. Under a simple model, a 30% diffuser beats a 20% one only while it keeps losing at least two-thirds as many grams a day. Weigh to find out.
66.7%
of the 20% bottle's grams per day — the break-even rate a 30% bottle must keep to deliver as much fragrance (simplified model, labelled)
Quick answers — read this first
Does more oil always make it stronger? No. More oil raises fragrance per gram, but a thicker blend may climb the reeds more slowly and heavy components can clog them, cancelling part of the gain.

Can high loads interfere with capillary flow? They can — fragrance oils are commonly described as more viscous than carriers, heavy oils especially. CSI publishes no viscosity data, so measure it with a reed-uptake test.

How do I know which is happening? Weigh the bottles. Under a simple model, a 30% bottle must keep 66.7% of a 20% bottle's grams per day just to break even.

What does testing cost? ₹3,093.40 for two oils at 10/20/30% in ten 50 ml bottles. See the priced round.
The short answer
Answer: No. Adding fragrance oil raises the fragrance in every gram of blend, but a high load can thicken the blend and slow its travel up the reeds, so the room may get little or no stronger.
Why: Strength needs fragrance per gram and grams leaving per day. Under a simplified model, 30% only out-delivers 20% while its g/day stays above 66.7% of the 20% rate.
Method: One-hour reed-uptake test (weigh a dry reed, stand it 60 min, weigh again) for each blend; then the same bottles as weighed diffusers scored blind to day 14; a light and a heavy oil at 10/20/30%.
Where extra oil helps — and where it can get in the way A reed diffuser has no heat and no fan: liquid climbs the reed, spreads, and evaporates from its surface 3 · At the reed surface helps Each gram that evaporates carries more fragrance at a higher load. Carrier and fragrance components may leave at different rates. 2 · Up the reed may hinder A thicker blend is commonly described as climbing more slowly; heavy components can build up in the reed channels over weeks. 1 · In the bottle check More fragrance per gram, less base to keep it dissolved. Clear at 7 days? If not, nothing above matters. The break-even line Simplified model (labelled): fragrance leaving per day ≈ grams lost per day × load 20% losing 1.5 g/day = 0.30 g fragrance/day 30% delivers less than that if it loses under 1.00 g/day — i.e. under 66.7% of the 20% bottle's rate. Weigh both bottles to know.
The three steps from bottle to room and what a higher load does at each: more fragrance per gram at the reed surface, a possibly slower climb up the reed, and less base to keep the oil dissolved. Under a labelled simplified model, a 30% bottle must keep 66.7% of a 20% bottle's grams per day to deliver as much fragrance.
Straight answer
Does adding more fragrance oil always make a reed diffuser stronger, or can high concentrations interfere with capillary flow?
No, more oil does not always make a reed diffuser stronger — and yes, a high load can interfere with capillary flow. A diffuser needs two things: fragrance in each gram of blend, and grams leaving the reed each day. Raising the load improves the first. But fragrance oils are commonly described as more viscous than diffuser carriers, heavy oils especially, so a high load can thicken the blend, slow its climb up the fibre reeds and, over weeks, clog them — cutting the second. Under a simplified, labelled model (fragrance leaving ≈ grams lost per day × load), a 30% bottle delivers more than a 20% one only while it keeps losing more than 66.7% of the 20% bottle's grams per day. CSI publishes no viscosity, evaporation or throw data for any base, oil or reed, so measure it: a one-hour reed-uptake test for each blend, then weighed, blind-scored diffusers to day 14. A round with a light oil and a heavy oil at 10/20/30% in Pure Performance Base costs ₹3,093.40.
One line: Load sets fragrance per gram; reeds and base set grams per day — strength needs both, so weigh.
No — more oil does not always mean a stronger diffuser, and a high load can slow how fast liquid travels up the reeds. Measure it directly: a light oil (Eucalyptus Spearmint) and a heavy one (Dark Vanilla Oud) at 10%, 20% and 30% in Pure Performance Base, with a one-hour reed-uptake test and a weighed diffuser test, in ten 50 ml Gold bottles: ₹3,093.40.
See Pure Performance Base

No — and here is the mechanism

Every gram that leaves the reed carries more fragrance at a higher load. Whether more grams leave is a separate question.

A reed diffuser has two jobs: get liquid from the bottle to the air, and make sure that liquid carries fragrance. Raising the load helps the second job directly — at 30%, each gram of blend holds half again as much oil as at 20%. But it can work against the first. Fragrance oils are commonly described as more viscous than diffuser carriers, heavy oils especially, so replacing base with oil can thicken the blend; a thicker liquid is commonly described as climbing a capillary more slowly. Heavy components can also build up in the reed's channels over weeks. If fewer grams reach the reed surface each day, part of the extra fragrance per gram is cancelled out.

Whether the net effect is stronger, the same or weaker depends on the oil, the base and the reed — and CSI publishes no viscosity, evaporation or throw figures for any of its bases, oils or reeds, so nobody can calculate it in advance. What you can do is measure the two halves separately: how fast each blend climbs a reed, and how fast each finished diffuser loses weight, alongside how strong it seems in a room. The load conventions behind every figure here, with oil as a share of the total blend, are in the fragrance-load pillar.

The CSI principle
Load sets how much fragrance each gram carries. The reed and the base set how many grams leave. Strength needs both.
That is why a 30% diffuser can lose to a 20% one — and why weighing the bottle tells you which half failed.

The break-even line: how much slower is too slow?

A simple model makes the trade-off concrete. It is a simplification, labelled as such: assume the fragrance leaves in proportion to the blend, so the fragrance leaving per day is roughly the grams lost per day multiplied by the load. In reality carrier and fragrance components evaporate at different rates — the post on liquid disappearing while the room smells weak deals with that — but the model is enough to show why weighing matters.

ILLUSTRATION ONLY — every g/day figure is a hypothetical to show the arithmetic, not a measurement of any CSI product
Fragrance leaving per day under the simplified model
Load Hypothetical g/day lost Fragrance leaving per day (g/day × load) Compared with 20% at 1.5 g/day
10% 1.5 0.15 g -50%
20% 1.5 0.30 g +0%
30% 1.5 0.45 g +50%
30% 1.2 0.36 g +20%
30% 1.0 0.30 g -0%
30% 0.8 0.24 g -20%

Read down the 30% rows. If the 30% bottle loses weight at the same rate as the 20% one, it releases 50% more fragrance a day — the extra oil is working. If it slows to 1.2 g/day it still releases more, but only 20% more. At 1.00 g/day it releases exactly the same as the 20% bottle: you are paying for ten more points of oil and getting nothing. Below that it releases less. The general rule is that a higher load L₂ out-delivers a lower load L₁ only while its grams per day stay above L₁ ÷ L₂ of the lower load's rate — 66.7% for 30% against 20%.

Two more effects make the real picture flatter still. First, perceived strength is commonly described as rising less than proportionally with concentration in the air, so even a genuine 50% increase in fragrance released may feel like a modest step. Second, noses adapt quickly to a smell they live with. Both are reasons to score blind, from fresh air, and to treat small room-score differences with suspicion. Comparing 18%, 20% and 22% shows how to decide whether a small difference is real.

Measure capillary flow directly: the one-hour reed test

You cannot see viscosity. You can weigh a reed.

This quick test isolates the "up the reed" step. Stand one dry, pre-weighed fibre reed in each blend for a fixed time, then lift it out, let it drip for a few seconds, and weigh it again. The gain is how much liquid the reed took up in that time. Also mark how high the wet line reached against a ruler. If the 30% blend consistently loads less onto the reed than the 10% or 20% blend of the same oil, the higher load is slowing capillary flow in that base. It is not a diffuser test — just one step of one — but it is fast, cheap and objective.

1
Use a scale with fine stepsA single reed weighs very little, so the gain is a fraction of a gram. CSI does not publish its scale's resolution; check what steps your display reads in. If it only reads whole grams, weigh five reeds together per blend instead of one.
2
Weigh a dry reed per blendNew reeds from one pack. Label each on its top end with a pencil mark. Record dry weight.
3
Stand it in the blend for 60 minutesIn the bottle the blend was mixed in, after its 24–48 hour rest. Same room, same time, all blends together. Do not flip.
4
Lift, drip, weigh, measureHold vertically over the bottle for a fixed count (for example ten seconds), weigh, and measure the wet line from the bottom end. Return the reed to its bottle as one of its diffuser reeds.
5
Repeat onceWith a second fresh reed the next day. Two readings per blend make a single odd reed easier to spot.

Compare across loads 10% / 20% / 30% of one oil Each ÷ the 10% figure A falling ratio = slower climb at higher load
Why two oils, one light and one heavy
If the effect exists, it is expected to show more with heavy oils than light ones. Running Eucalyptus Spearmint (a fresh, minty blend) beside Dark Vanilla Oud (a heavy gourmand-wood) in the same base tells you whether your result is about load in general or about one oil's make-up. If only the heavy oil slows at 30%, you have learned something useful about your range: light oils may tolerate high loads that heavy ones do not.

Then the full round: weighed diffusers and blind scores

The uptake test answers "does the liquid climb more slowly?". The diffuser round answers the question that matters: "is the finished diffuser stronger?". The same ten bottles serve both. After the one-hour reed test, each bottle gets 6 black fibre reeds and becomes a diffuser. With ten bottles and two oils, the round puts one bottle at 10% (a reference point) and two each at 20% and 30% for each oil — a labelled screen, not a verdict.

Get each oil's IFRA certificate from CSI on WhatsApp before mixing the 30% bottles; if either oil's Category 10A figure is below 30%, use that figure instead. Rest everything 24–48 hours and check clarity against white and black cards — a hazy 30% blend is already an answer. Weigh each diffuser on day 0, 3, 7 and 14; score blind in your house room on day 3, 7 and 14, one coded bottle at a time, door shut, fan off, evaluators from fresh air. Then apply the break-even line: for each oil, divide the 30% bottles' grams per day by the 20% bottles'. Below about two-thirds, the extra oil is not paying for itself.

The common mistake: reading the room score alone. A 30% bottle scores a point higher on day 3 and the maker adopts it. By day 14 its weight loss has dropped well below the 20% bottles' and its reeds are darker; by week four it is the weaker diffuser. Fix: read score and grams per day together, at day 14 at least, and look at the reeds. Strong for three days, then weak is the pattern this mistake produces.

The cost side of "more is stronger"

Liquid cost per bottle at each load
Load Eucalyptus Spearmint Dark Vanilla Oud Difference between the two oils
10% ₹91.40 ₹101.89 ₹10.49
20% ₹94.88 ₹115.86 ₹20.98
30% ₹98.36 ₹129.84 ₹31.48

For the light oil (₹3.07 per gram at 1 kg), going from 20% to 30% adds ₹3.48 per 40 g bottle; for the heavy one (₹5.69 per gram), ₹13.97. The irony is that the heavy, dearer oil is also the one where extra load is more likely to slow the reeds — so it is the oil where "more" most needs proving. The most economical percentage turns these per-bottle figures into cost per day of measured life.

Both oils need only a 50 g pack each, because each oil's five bottles at 10/20/20/30/30% use 44 g plus allowance. The six spare reeds in the pack are the one-hour uptake reeds; after weighing they join their bottles, so nothing is wasted.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. "More oil, stronger diffuser" is the most profitable belief a fragrance seller could wish on its customers. It is not reliably true. Spend ₹3,093.40 on one round that measures both halves of the mechanism; if your heavy oils do not pay for 30%, keep them at 20% and buy less from us.
Building a festive range before Diwali (Sunday 8 November 2026)? The decision rule

Apply per oil after day 14 · stop at the first line that is true
Is more oil making it stronger?
If this is true It means Do this
30% hazy at 48 h or 7 days Compatibility limit reached first Stay at or below 20–25% for this oil in this base
30% uptake well below 20% and g/day under two-thirds of 20% Capillary flow is limiting the higher load Stay at 20%; extra oil is cancelled out
30% g/day close to 20% and score clearly higher The extra oil reaches the room 30% is justified — within the IFRA figure
30% g/day close to 20% but score no higher Perception has flattened Stay at 20%; save the oil
Light oil gains at 30%, heavy oil does not The effect is oil-specific Set loads per oil family, not one house rule
Neither oil gains from 20% to 30% Load is not your strength lever Don't buy more oil. Test reeds and base

If your light and heavy oils behave differently, that is the most useful outcome of all: it tells you whether to standardise one load or set one per SKU. If neither gains, the next levers are reed count and base — 25% and it barely smells and saturated reeds but no spread work through them — and the ceiling question for each oil is the IFRA and supplier-data post.

More oil makes every gram stronger. Only the reed decides how many grams leave.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished diffusers. "More oil, stronger diffuser" would sell more of our oil. This page explains why it is not reliably true, gives you a simple break-even line to test it against, and says plainly that we publish no viscosity, evaporation, throw or reed-diameter data for any CSI product.

Frequently asked questions

Does more fragrance oil make a reed diffuser stronger?
Not always. It raises the fragrance in each gram, but a high load can slow liquid up the reeds or clog them, so the room may not get stronger. Weigh bottles and score them blind to see.
Why does my high-percentage reed diffuser smell weaker?
A high load can thicken the blend so it climbs the reeds more slowly, and heavy components can clog reed channels over weeks. If the bottle loses weight much more slowly than a lower-load bottle, that is the likely cause.
What is capillary action in a reed diffuser?
The way liquid climbs the narrow channels inside a reed without any pump or heat. It brings the blend from the bottle to the reed surface, where fragrance evaporates into the room.
Do thick fragrance oils clog diffuser reeds?
Heavy oils are commonly linked with darker, stickier reeds and slower flow over time. Photograph reeds and weigh bottles over weeks to see whether yours do.
How can I test reed diffuser wicking?
Weigh a dry reed, stand it in the blend for 60 minutes, let it drip briefly and weigh again. Compare the uptake across loads or bases, repeating with a second reed.
What is the best fragrance load for strong reed diffusers?
The lowest load that gives your house strength target at day 14 or 30 while staying clear and keeping its grams per day. For many oils that is around the 20–25% the CSI base pages recommend and describe as typical; test yours.

What CSI's base pages state (quoted as claims to test, not CSI measurements): Pure Performance — neutral, "no added fixatives, no complex enhancements", for all fragrance families, "start at 10% … up to a maximum of 30%", "20% recommended", a "typical working blend" of 75% base + 25% fragrance, rest 24–48 hours before bottling, and "flip reeds after the first hour"; Longevity — for oriental/amber, woody, resinous/balsamic, spicy and gourmand families, slower "cold diffusion", 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours, "if clouding occurs, reduce fragrance percentage and retest", allow 2–3 hours before the first flip; Lift — floral, citrus, green and fruity families, 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours; Depth — chypre, leather, smoky and rich gourmand families, "stabilises tricky sweet and spicy fragrance oils", 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours; Softness — soft florals, powdery/musky and light gourmand, 10–30%, rest 24–48 hours. Fibre reed page: length 20.3 cm; for a standard 50–100 ml bottle "6–8 reeds gives a good balance". Gold Reed Diffuser Bottle: variants 50 ml and 120 ml (the page text also says "50 and 100ml"); neck diameter and fill line are not published. CSI publishes no composition, density, viscosity, evaporation rate, flash point or shelf life for any diffuser base; no throw, evaporation or longevity data for any base, oil or reed; no reed diameter; no IFRA percentage for any oil; and no industry standard exists for an "acceptable" diffuser strength — every acceptance line on this page is the reader's labelled house standard. CSI does not sell DPG, Augeo, perfumer's alcohol, IPM or rattan reeds; CSI HyperDiffusion Base was out of stock on 14 October 2026. Costs exclude labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
