How Do I Compare a New Bulk Wick Lot Against the Development Sample Before Releasing It to Production?
Share
What counts as "the same"? Your own numbers, because CSI's Eco wick page states no length, width or tab size. Worked example: the new lot's median length within 2 mm of the retained median, and no wick outside the retained range widened by 2 mm each side (our judgement, labelled).
What does the burn decide? Whether a measured difference matters. New-lot candles must pass every in-house limit in every third and stay close to the retained candles: for example mean flame within 0.5 cm, mushroom within 1 mm, pool depth within 0.3 cm.
What does it cost? The wicks come from the packs you already have. The six comparison candles need 1.5 kg of wax (₹767.40) and your own oil and jars.

Your new lot, made precise
The worked example, labelled: your candle is a 200 g single-wick soy candle at 8% (16 g of oil and 184 g of wax) in your own jar, approved on Eco C2 after replicate testing. You kept 20 wicks from the approved sample, measured them, and sealed them. A C2 1,000-pack (₹9,440.00) has just arrived. Before anyone wicks a production jar with it, you want to know it's the same wick.
This post owns that check: what to measure, what to burn, and the release rule. What to write on the order so the right product arrives is 6993; how many wicks to retain, how to store them and for how long is 6995. If the new wicks come from a different supplier altogether, that's a wick change, not a lot check, and it needs full replicates: an equivalent size from another supplier.
Why a new lot can look or burn different: causes, ranked
Ranked by how often, in our judgement, each one produces an apparent lot difference. The first four are on your side and cost nothing to check; signs are common observations, not CSI data.
| Cause | What you'd see | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Measuring differently (your side) | A consistent shift in length; tab sizes that don't add up | Re-measure five retained wicks with the same ruler and method, same person | One steel ruler, one method, written down | Nothing |
| 2. Handling or storage damage (your side) | Bent or kinked wicks, crushed tabs, dust, a damp feel after a monsoon store | Compare a sealed part of the pack with an exposed part | Keep packs sealed, dry and flat; reject damaged wicks individually | Nothing |
| 3. Comparison candles not alike (making) | One arm burns differently, but the arms were poured on different days or from different wax | Pour all six from one melt, alternate positions | Repeat the burn properly | ₹767.40 |
| 4. Room and trim (burning) | Flicker, soot on one side, a candle trimmed later than the others | Still air, one trim length, same session times | Fix the protocol | Nothing |
| 5. Wrong variant or product (purchasing) | Visibly thinner or thicker; label says C1 for C2 | Pack label against the order and the specification | Return the conversation to the supplier; it's not a lot issue | Nothing |
| 6. Real lot variation (the wick) | Length, tab, braid or coating shifted across many wicks; taller flame or bigger mushroom in the burn | Measurement plus the 3 + 3 burn | Hold the lot; supplier conversation; bridging stock | ₹1,227.20 for 130 bridging wicks |
Cause 6 is the one you're looking for, and it's the last to conclude. Wick lots can differ in ways a ruler won't see (fibre, braid tension, coating), which is why measurement alone can release a lot but can't clear a suspicious one. The published background on why two wicks of the same length and thickness can still burn differently is the same length and thickness, but different burn; for how a lot difference shows up as late-burn growth, see mushrooming only after several burn cycles.
The incoming measurements and the accept rule
Take 20 wicks from across the pack, not the top layer: some from the top, some from the middle, some from the bottom of the bundle. From a 1,000-pack that's 2% of the wicks, and they go back into production if the pack is released. Measure them exactly as you measured the retained sample, ideally the same person with the same ruler.
| Measure | How | Compare with | Example accept limit (yours to set) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Label and count | Product, variant, pack size; weigh 50 counted wicks, then the rest, and divide | Order and specification | Correct variant; count within a few wicks of the label |
| Overall length | Steel ruler, tab base to tip, to the nearest 0.5 mm | Retained median and range | Median within 2 mm; no wick outside retained range ± 2 mm |
| Tab | Width across and height of the crimp | Retained tabs | Same size by eye and ruler; no loose or missing tabs in 20 |
| Crimp | Hold the tab, tilt the wick 45° and back | Retained tabs | Wick stays seated and returns upright |
| Braid and fibre | Close photo beside a ruler, same light | Retained photos | No visible change in braid pattern, thickness or colour |
| Coating | Look and feel along the length | Retained wicks | Even, like the retained sample; no bare or heavy patches |
| Straightness | Lay on a flat surface | Retained wicks | No kinks or bends that won't straighten |
The diagram shows why length is recorded as a difference from the retained median rather than as an absolute figure: it works whatever your wick's real length is, and it keeps you from treating an illustrative number as a CSI specification. In the worked example, Lot A's median is +0.5 mm and every wick sits inside the band: it's released on measurement. Lot B's median is +3.0 mm, beyond the 2 mm tolerance, and 5 of its 20 wicks sit above the band: it's held for the burn.
The side-by-side burn: six candles, paired limits
| Measure | Retained (R) | Lot B (N) | Difference | Paired limit | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flame height | 3.0 cm | 3.8 cm | +0.8 cm | 0.5 cm | outside |
| Mushroom at hour 4 | 2 mm | 4 mm | +2 mm | 1 mm | outside |
| Pool depth | 1.1 cm | 1.5 cm | +0.4 cm | 0.3 cm | outside |
| Grams per hour | 6.8 | 7.9 | +16% | 10% | outside |
| Soot card | clean | light grey at hour 4 | — | no worse than R | fail |
Lot B fails on the top third alone; you'd stop there and record it rather than burn it to the bottom. The pattern (longer wicks, taller flame, bigger mushroom, faster burn) is consistent: this lot behaves like a stronger wick in your jar. It's exactly the kind of difference that would have reached customers as soot complaints if the pack had gone straight to the pouring table.

Release, hold or reject, and what to buy meanwhile
| Result | Decision | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Measurements inside; order already burn-checked | Release | Move to released stock; retain 20 wicks from the pack |
| Measurements inside; first pack of a new order | Release after the burn | Keep using released stock while the 3 + 3 runs |
| Measurements outside; burn passes every limit | Release, noted | Record the new median as a variant of the approved wick; watch complaints |
| Burn fails (Lot B) | Reject | Hold the pack; send us photos, measurements and the burn sheet on WhatsApp; bridging stock if needed |
| Both arms misbehave | Investigate | The formula, the jar or the test changed: not a lot question (6988) |
Bridging stock. If a lot is held and you have no released wicks left, order the smallest quantity that covers the gap. Worked example, labelled: at 250 candles a month, about two weeks is 125 wicks; Eco C2 100 + 20 + 10 = 130 for ₹1,227.20. Ask us on WhatsApp whether stock from a different lot is available before it dispatches, and measure the bridging pack against your retained sample too. We'd rather tell you we can't confirm a lot than send you more of the one you've just held.
Argued against our own interest: if your measurements pass and the order is already burn-checked, don't run a burn just because it feels safer; it takes 10 days and tells you little the ruler hasn't. And if a lot fails, a bigger order from us isn't the fix: a held lot is a conversation about that lot, and the wick range we list has no in-between size to switch to. CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs (C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided) plus one wooden width; if a lot difference pushes your candle to the edge of its rung, the honest options are a formula adjustment, a pair of smaller wicks, or a WhatsApp conversation about what we stock.
The step back to production
A released pack goes into production with its date and lot written on the batch sheet for every candle it wicks, so a later complaint can be traced to a pack. Keep 20 wicks from it, sealed, as the next reference. How much wick stock to hold so a held lot never stops you is safety stock for a shared wick; how much to order is 6999. For the record-keeping that ties a lot to a test, the published guide is organising hundreds of burn-test results.

Skip for now: a bigger wick order to "dilute" a doubtful lot; a different wick size as a quick fix for a lot difference (that's a formula change, with its own replicates); a second scale or holder type mid-test; and any burn on a pack whose measurements pass inside an order that has already been burn-checked.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, scale and holders named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that our wick pages publish no dimensions, that we can't confirm every lot, that a held lot isn't solved by buying more from us, and that a scale you already own will do.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not offered. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Wick Centering Device's 4 mm hole, the scale's "grams or ounces" and CSI 464's pour range and load.
The 20-wick sample, the 2 mm tolerance, the paired limits, both illustrative lots and the burn results, 7 g an hour, 250 candles a month and the two-week bridge are labelled worked examples or our judgement. Non-price figures: "new bulk wick lot" and "development sample" are the reader's terms (title). The 200 g candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax, total-weight basis) is the series default, labelled. Length is shown as the difference from the retained median because CSI states no length for Eco C1 or C2. The 20-wick sample, 2 mm tolerance, paired limits (0.5 cm, 1 mm, 0.3 cm, 10%), both lots' values and the burn results, 7 g an hour, a 20 g floor, 250 candles a month and the two-week bridge are labelled worked examples, illustrations or our judgement. Rules of thumb: 5–6 mm trim, 1 cm floor, 48–72 hours' cure for soy. Wax ceiling as the page states (CSI 464 up to 10%), a formulation limit. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
