CSI Wick Decisions · Master Formula
Write the wick as a title, a variant and a URL, with how it is used and what approved it. Then give purchasing one line to copy, and goods-in one check.
8 fields
in the wick block of a master formula, plus a purchase line copied verbatim · our template
Quick answers — read this first
What should my master formula say about the wick? Eight fields that stop a wrong order, written so nobody has to guess: the exact product title, the exact variant text (for Eco wicks "Thin (C1)" or "Thick (C2)"), the supplier and product URL, wicks per candle, alternates ("none" unless one has been tested), the approved lot reference, the test record IDs and a goods-in check. Around them, placement, your own measurements, the formula the approval is valid for, and a version with one owner. Then one line purchasing copies word for word.

Why so much for a ₹5.90 part? Because the wick is the cheapest item in the candle and the one most likely to undo your testing. In the worked example a reorder that said "Eco wicks 500" brought back Thick (C2), and a 120-candle batch, ₹21,036.10 of oil, wax and wicks, went out with the tall flame and soot the formula had been fixed for.

What about alternates? Write "None approved". An alternate goes in only after it has passed the same test the approved wick did: in the worked example, three candles against three controls, burned to the floor, with an approval rule written before burn 1.

What does purchasing actually copy? A line like: "Eco Candle Wicks | Eco Wicks for Candle Making — Thin (C1) — any pack — [product URL] — no substitutes; if out of stock, stop and ask." Pack size isn't part of the spec: C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack.
The short answer
Identity: exact product title + exact variant text + supplier URL. A nickname is how the wrong wick gets ordered.
Use: wicks per candle, placement, centring tool, sticker, your measured length and tab height.
Control: approved lot reference, alternates "none unless tested", test record IDs, version and who may change it.
Handover: a purchase line copied verbatim, and a goods-in check that compares the pack wording with the formula before a wick reaches the bench.
Which field stops which mistake The wick block of a master formula, read as a trap for each wrong-wick error. Worked example. How the wrong wick gets in If it gets through 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 C1 and C2 swapped Thin vs Thick: one word apart tall flame, soot (C2 in a C1 formula) A look-alike listing ordered Eco Braided, Loose 2 inch untabbed, unsized: anything can happen Two-wick SKU ordered as one MF-04 needs 2 per candle short order, then a rushed substitute Variant out of stock, the nearest one bought instead C1 to C2: the soot you fixed returns Another seller's "C1" used as if names were the same unknown: names do not transfer Untested alternate used "just for this batch" unknown until a customer burns it Unreleased lot put to work before its lot check lot drift reaches customers The eight fields 1 Exact product title 2 Exact variant text 3 Supplier and product URL 4 Wicks per candle 5 Alternates: none unless tested 6 Approved lot reference 7 Test record IDs 8 Goods-in check blocks the error helps catch it Every row needs one filled dot.
Seven ways a wrong wick reaches production (rows) against the eight fields of the wick block (columns), worked example. A filled dot means the field blocks the error; a ring means it helps catch it. The right-hand column is what the candle does if the error gets through. No single field covers every row, which is why a variant name alone isn't a specification.
Straight answer
What information should be written into my master candle formula so purchasing cannot accidentally order the wrong wick?
Write the wick as an identity, a use and a control, not as a name. Identity: the exact product title as the supplier's listing and invoice print it ("Eco Candle Wicks | Eco Wicks for Candle Making"), the exact variant text ("Thin (C1)"), and the product URL, because the same words mean different wicks at different sellers. Use: wicks per candle, where they sit (centred, or two on a diameter at your measured spacing), how they're held (centring tool, sticker), and your own measurements of the wick as received: length and tab height. CSI's Eco page states neither, so these figures are yours. Control: the lot or invoice it was approved on, the test record IDs that approved it, "Alternates: none approved" until one has passed the same test, and a version number with the one person allowed to change it. Then give purchasing a single line to copy verbatim, with "no substitutes; if out of stock, stop and ask", and give goods-in one check: does the pack say what the formula says? That is the whole job. The physical reference sample those fields point to is kept separately (6995).
One line: title, variant, URL, wicks per candle, placement, lot, alternates "none", test IDs, plus a verbatim purchase line and a goods-in check. Nicknames are how C2 ends up in a C1 candle.
The month's wick order in the worked example comes straight off five master formulas: 398 Eco Thin (C1), 184 Thick (C2) and 82 Cotton Braided, bought as 400, 190 and 90 for ₹5,233.60. No pack is cheaper per wick than another, so the formula names the variant, not the pack. All in stock on 7 October 2026 except the C1 10-pack.
Eco C1 100-pack — ₹590.00

The mix-up, made precise

The formula was right. The order said "Eco wicks". The candle went back to sooting.

The worked example, labelled. You make a five-formula range. MF-02 is a 200 g Woody Oud candle at 8% (16 g of oil and 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, load as a percentage of total weight) in your own 8 cm jar. It used to run on Eco Thick (C2), and by hour three of a four-hour session the flame stood well above the 2.5–5 cm band many makers use as a rule of thumb, the jar rim blackened and the wick carried a mushroom. You trimmed to 5–6 mm, moved the test away from the ceiling fan, and it still sooted. So you stepped down to Eco Thin (C1), ran three candles to the floor, and C1 passed in every third. MF-02 has been on C1 for three months.

Then the reorder. The purchase note read "Eco wicks 500". The last Eco order on file had been for MF-03, which runs on C2, so the 500-pack of Thick (C2) went into the basket (₹4,720.00 rather than ₹2,950.00 for Thin (C1)). Nobody opened the pack against the formula. A 120-candle MF-02 batch was wicked with C2, and the first customer burns came back with the old story: tall flame, soot on the rim by the third hour. Materials in that batch, excluding jars, were ₹21,036.10 (₹175.30 a candle). The wick price difference was ₹1,770.00. The batch cost about 11.9 times what the wrong pack did.

Nothing about the wick failed. The wick was a good C2, doing exactly what C2 does in that candle. What failed was that the formula said "Eco wick" and the order inherited the last person's habit. This post is about the wick block that stops that. The physical sample those fields point to is 6995; the specification you send a supplier for a 5,000-piece order is 6993.

Safety first, plainly: a wrong, oversized wick is a safety problem before it is a quality problem: a tall, smoking flame and hot glass. If a batch might be on the wrong wick, stop selling it and burn retained candles from it, in still air, on a heat-safe surface, never unattended, stopping any session where the flame smokes continuously or reaches toward the glass. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer (CSI lists none).

Where a wrong wick gets in: causes, ranked

Before you blame purchasing, prove it was the wick. Then find the handoff that let it through.

When an approved formula suddenly flames tall or soots, the wrong wick is one cause among several. The ranking is our judgement for a formula that has passed a full-life test and then changes behaviour between batches; signs are common observations, not CSI data. The first two rows are about how the customer burns the candle; the rest are about what went into it.

Cause ranking · approved formula starts flaming tall or sooting
Customer burning separated from what went into the candle · checks are cheapest first
Cause What you'd see Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Untrimmed wick, long sessions (customer burning) Soot after hours, carbon cap; complaints scattered across batches Retained candle from the batch, trimmed to 5–6 mm, 4-hour session in still air: clean Care wording; trimming advice Nothing
2. Draught: fan, AC, window (customer burning) Flicker, one-sided soot Same retain clean in still air Placement advice Nothing
3. Wrong variant ordered (purchasing) Whole batch flames taller; pack says "Thick (C2)" Batch sheet wick field and the opened pack against the master formula; burn one retain beside an approved C1 candle Quarantine; re-wick future batches; fix the purchase line The batch
4. Right variant, wrong bin (wicking bench) Some candles in a batch behave, some don't Wicks left at the bench against the batch sheet; spare wick taped to the sheet Separate labelled bins; one formula wicked at a time Labels
5. Placement drift (production) Leaning flame, soot on one side only Measure wick position in unburned batch candles Write the centring tool and sticker into the formula ₹23.60 a holder
6. Wick lot change (material) Slightly taller flame from one pack onward Lot comparison against the retained bag (the lot check) Hold the lot; ask the supplier Ten wicks measured
7. Formula drift (oil, load, dye, jar) Change coincides with a new oil lot or a load "tweak" Batch sheet load and lots against the master formula Change control A retest

Rows 1 and 2 are why you don't panic at the first complaint: a candle from the batch, burned the way your label says, settles it in one session. Rows 3 to 5 are what the master formula can prevent. Row 6 has its own method and row 7 is change control (6988). If you burn a suspect retain to check row 3, the measurements are the ones you approved with: flame height at hours 1–4, pool depth, mushroom size, a white card held above the flame, and grams burned per hour.

The wick block of a master formula

Every field answers one question someone will otherwise answer by guessing.

The master formula covers wax, oil, load, dye, jar, temperatures and cure; the general case for an approved raw-material specification is the published post on approved raw-material specifications. Here is only the wick block, filled in for MF-02. The "source" column matters: some lines come from the supplier's page, most come from your own measurements and tests, and none should come from memory.

Field 2 is the one that failed, and it needs a negative as well as a positive: "Thin (C1). Not Thick (C2)." The negative looks fussy until you remember that MF-02 used to be C2, so every old note, batch sheet and spare in a drawer says C2. Field 11 records that history so the next person doesn't "correct" the formula back to the wick that sooted.

Field 6 exists because our page is silent. In the text we captured, the Eco wick listing gives no length, width or tab size. So the formula records yours: the median length of ten wicks from the approved pack, the tab height, and the trimmed length at first light. The Cotton Braided page does state "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm"; MF-05's block records that figure and your own measurement beside it. How to measure a wick against a retained sample is 6994; this field just keeps the numbers where purchasing and goods-in can see them.

Field 10 stops a quiet mistake. A wick approval belongs to one candle: this oil at this load, this wax, this jar, this dye. If someone launches a 10% version of MF-02, or a black one, field 10 says the C1 approval doesn't cover it. Per-fragrance wick specs are normal (6987); this field makes sure each one stays attached to the formula it was tested in. For organising those results across a whole range, see the published post on building your own internal wick guide.

Two fields people leave out (our judgement)
"Who may change this": one name. A master formula anyone can edit is a suggestion. "What the wick is not": in a range that uses both Eco variants, write the other one down as excluded. It costs one line and blocks the commonest mistake in a range like this.

The purchase line, and what happens when a variant is out

Purchasing shouldn't interpret a formula. Give them a line to copy.

The master formula is for whoever develops and approves candles. Purchasing needs one line per wick, generated from it, which they paste into the order or the WhatsApp message unchanged:

Purchase lines generated from the five master formulas
Worked example · quantities are a month with a 2% allowance (labelled) · CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Line purchasing copies Used by Wicks a month Bought as ₹
Eco Candle Wicks | Eco Wicks for Candle Making — Thin (C1) — any pack — no substitutes MF-01 (150), MF-02 (120), MF-04 (60 × 2) 390 + 2% = 398 4 × 100 = 400 ₹2,360.00
Eco Candle Wicks | Eco Wicks for Candle Making — Thick (C2) — any pack — no substitutes MF-03 (180) 180 + 2% = 184 100 + 50 + 20 + 20 = 190 ₹1,793.60
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made — any pack — no substitutes MF-05 (80) 80 + 2% = 82 50 + 4 × 10 = 90 ₹1,080.00
Month's wick order ₹5,233.60

Three details in those lines are deliberate. "Any pack": C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack (₹5.90, ₹9.44, ₹12.00), so the pack is a cash decision, never part of the spec. Argued against our own interest: a formula that says "1,000-pack" invites someone to buy a 1,000-pack because the formula says so. "MF-04 × 2": the two-wick SKU is counted per wick, not per candle; ordered as single, it comes up 60 wicks short, and a short order is how a rushed substitute happens. "No substitutes": the line tells the supplier, not just your staff. How much to hold and when to reorder are 6999.

When the variant is out of stock, the master formula has already decided: stop and ask. It does not say "buy the nearest". On 7 October 2026 the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock, which changes nothing for MF-02 because a 20-pack covers the same need; but if Thin (C1) were out entirely, the nearest CSI wick is Thick (C2), which is the wick MF-02 was moved off for soot. CSI's sized, tabbed range is short: C1, then C2, then Cotton Braided, with nothing in between and one wooden width. So there's rarely a "close enough" wick to reach for, which is exactly why the formula should forbid reaching. Ask us on WhatsApp when the variant will be back. We'd rather lose that sale than sell you the wick your formula was changed to avoid.

Don't do this. Don't write a nickname ("Eco", "small wick", "the thin ones") anywhere a purchase can start from it. Don't let purchasing pick a different variant because the approved one is out; a stock-out is a delay, not a formula change. Don't fill the alternates field from a supplier's "equivalent" claim; an alternate is whatever passed your test, recorded as exactly as the original (the published post on recording exact specifications so a candle can be reproduced covers the wider record). Don't hide a wrong wick behind trimming instructions on the label. And don't buy 1,000 of anything to "get ahead" before the formula, its replicates and the lot have all passed.

Alternates: none until a test says so

An alternate is a second approval, not a footnote.

The safest entry in field 8 is "None approved". If you want a fallback written in, for a variant that keeps going out of stock or a second supplier, it earns its place the same way the first wick did: a controlled burn against the approved wick, in the exact production formula, to the floor. Worked example, labelled: qualifying a cut-to-length option from the Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs (61 meters) as an MF-02 alternate, cut to 12 cm per wick. The roll's page states no braid size, so the alternate's spec would be "this roll, cut to 12 cm, on its own tab", and the approval would cover nothing else.

1
Write the approval rule before you pourThe alternate passes only if all three candles meet the same limits the approved C1 met, in each third of the jar, and do no worse than the three controls burned beside them. One failure in any candle, in any third, fails the alternate. An in-house protocol you set, not an industry standard.
2
Pour 6 candles from one batchThree on the approved Eco Thin (C1), three on the alternate, all 200 g at 8% Woody Oud in your 8 cm jar, 1,104 g of CSI 464 and 96 g of oil in total, same pour, same cure (Woody Oud's page says to cure soy candles 48–72 hours before burn testing). Label the bases with formula, arm and candle number.
3
Burn in four-hour sessions, side by sideStill air, away from fans and AC, trimmed to 5–6 mm before each light. Log at hours 1, 2, 3 and 4: flame height, pool width and depth, mushroom size, a white card held above the flame for a few seconds, and weight before and after each session for grams per hour.
4
Read glass the safe wayYour own non-contact thermometer at fixed points on the outside of the glass at each hourly check, the same points for every candle. You're comparing the alternate with the control and with the limit you set, not with a number we've invented.
5
Go to the floor, judge each thirdWorked example: 175 g above a 25 g floor at about 7 g an hour is about 25.0 hours, roughly 7 sessions per candle. Score top, middle and bottom separately; late heat is where alternates usually fail.
6
Write the result into the formula, or don'tPass: field 8 gets "Braided roll, cut 12 cm, test record ALT-___", with its own purchase line. Fail: field 8 stays "None approved", and the test record is filed anyway, so nobody repeats it.

Three candles per arm is the series minimum; for a formula that has already failed once on soot, a second pour date makes the approval much stronger (how many replicates). Approval itself is about the wick being right; the master formula is about making sure the right one keeps arriving.

CSI items for the test ₹2,045.34 against ₹21,036.10 for one wrong batch

If the alternate is a supplier's wick rather than ours, swap the roll for their sample; the rest of the list holds. Argued against our own interest: most small makers don't need an alternate at all. If the approved variant goes out of stock, waiting a week or asking us on WhatsApp is cheaper than ₹2,045.34 of testing, and cheaper still than a wrong batch. Write "None approved" and keep a little more safety stock instead (pooled stock for a wick several formulas share is 6997).

The production step is the purchase-line table above: each formula's wick field, multiplied by its monthly candles and wicks per candle, plus a labelled allowance, rounded up to whole CSI packs. Because every line names a variant and says "no substitutes", the person placing the order needs no judgement at all, which is the point. Goods-in then opens each pack, checks the variant wording against the line, writes the receipt date on the pack, measures ten wicks against field 6 and only then moves the pack to the bin labelled for its formulas. The whole method, from first soot to this order, is the series playbook.

Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. Festive months are when orders get placed in a hurry by whoever is free. Print the purchase lines now and pin them where orders are placed. If you order festive wicks from us, send the lines as written; we'll confirm stock and dispatch, and say plainly if a variant is short instead of substituting.

What to buy, and what to skip

Eco Candle Wicks — Thin (C1) and Thick (C2)
One listing, two variants, one word apart: the master formula must carry the variant text exactly as the listing and invoice print it, "Thin (C1)" or "Thick (C2)", not "Eco wick" and not "small". In the text we captured the page states no length, width or tab size and claims "minimal soot or smoke" (the page's words, not a measurement), so the variant name is the only thing that tells the two apart before you burn them. ₹5.90 a C1 wick and ₹9.44 a C2 at every pack. Limitation: the 10-wick C1 pack is out of stock; the smallest C1 pack is 20.

wick · the one with a stated dimension
Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made
MF-05's wick. The page states "Height of the wick is 10.16 cm" and positions the wick for "large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm"; the first is a figure your goods-in check can verify, the second is page wording, one rung of a test ladder, not a rule. Its name shares "braided" with two cut-to-length rolls, which is why the master formula records the exact title. ₹12.00 a wick at every pack. Limitation: one stated height says nothing about the braid or the tab; measure and record those yourself.

Candle Wick Stickers (40)
A master formula that says "centred" without saying how leaves the wicking bench to improvise. The page describes 10 mm round stickers that hold the tab to the jar base; if that is how your approval candles were made, write it in, because an off-centre wick is one of the commonest ways an approved candle starts to soot on one side. Limitation: the 100-sticker sheet is out of stock on 7 October 2026; the 40-sheet works out at ₹2.50 a sticker, so a heavy month needs several sheets.
Variant Price Per sticker Note

For single-wick formulas, name the centring tool you approved with. The page gives "Hole Dia 0,15" (4mm)" and one hole, so it holds a single wick; it is not a double-wick holder, which matters for MF-04. ₹23.60 a holder. Limitation: for MF-04's pair the master formula must record your measured spacing and the holder you used; the Steel Wick Holder's page states no hole spacing, so measure it before you write it down.

Skip for now: a second wick "just in case" without a test record; 1,000-packs bought because the order form defaulted to them; and any listing whose name merely resembles your approved wick. The Eco Braided Wicks (5 meter) and Eco Candle Wicks Loose (2 inch diameter) are real products for other jobs, not spellings of Eco C1.

The CSI principle
A wick specification is a title, a variant and a URL, never a nickname. If it can be misread, it will be, on the busiest day of the year.
Eight fields, one purchase line copied verbatim, one goods-in check, alternates "none" until tested.
"The wick that sooted is still in your old notes. Write down the one that didn't, exactly, and write down that the other one is out."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that pack size shouldn't be in your spec because bigger packs cost the same per wick, that most makers don't need an alternate wick at all, and that if your variant is out you should wait rather than buy our nearest one.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack and the 100-sticker wick sticker sheet are out of stock and are not offered. Page wording is quoted and attributed: the Eco listing's title and variant names, its "minimal soot or smoke" claim, the Cotton Braided page's 10.16 cm height and "exceeding 8 cm", and the centring device's 4 mm hole.

The five-formula range, monthly volumes, the 2% allowance, the 120-candle batch, the wrong order, the 12 cm cut length, the 25 g floor and 7 g an hour are labelled worked examples; which wick each formula uses comes from your tests, not CSI data. Frequently asked questions

What should a candle master formula include for the wick?
The exact product title, exact variant text, supplier URL, wicks per candle, placement and fixing, your measured length and tab height, the approved lot, alternates ("none" unless tested), test record IDs, and a version with one owner.
How do I stop staff ordering the wrong wick size?
Give purchasing a line per wick to copy verbatim, with the variant spelled exactly and "no substitutes; if out of stock, stop and ask". Then check every pack's wording against the formula at goods-in, before it reaches the bench.
What is the difference between Eco C1 and C2 wicks?
They are two variants of one CSI listing, "Thin (C1)" and "Thick (C2)". The page states no dimensions for either, so which suits your candle comes only from your own burn tests; record the exact variant in the formula.
Can I list an alternative wick in my candle formula?
Only after it has passed the same test as the approved wick: in our worked example, three candles against three controls in the exact formula, burned to the floor, each third judged against limits written before burn 1.
Should the master formula specify the wick pack size?
No. C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every CSI pack, so pack size is a cash decision for purchasing, not part of the specification.
What if my approved wick variant is out of stock?
Wait or ask the supplier; don't switch variants. At CSI the nearest sized wick to C1 is C2, a different strength, which may bring back the soot your formula was fixed for.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on moving from a failed wick to the correct CSI wick and a bulk purchase (6981–7000). It covers the wick block of a master candle formula: the fields, what each blocks, a cause ranking for an approved formula that starts sooting, purchase lines generated from the formula, stock-outs, a six-candle alternate qualification test with an in-house rule, and the month's order.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Bamboo Wick Holder, Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle, Woody Oud Fragrance Oil. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the burn and wick advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy, Renam Dhoundiyal. The reviews from Ashwini, Lalitha Jagan, LJ are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: the 200 g candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax, total-weight basis) in the reader's 8 cm jar is the series default, labelled; Woody Oud's page states "candles (6-10%)" and CSI 464's page "Up to 10%" (a formulation limit, not a regulatory one). Trim 5–6 mm, the 2.5–5 cm flame band and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. The five formulas, monthly volumes, the 2% allowance, the batch, the wrong order, cut length, floor and 7 g an hour are labelled worked examples; the alternate rule is an in-house protocol. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
