Quick answers — read this first
How long, exactly? Two minutes by hand. Eco Soy CSI 400 is the only CSI wax whose page states a duration: "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly."

And with a powered mixer? Less. The CSI Pro Mixer page states: "For candles: add fragrance to wax at 80-85C, then run mixer for 60-90 seconds until uniform" — and separately, "Avoid using the mixer in wax above 95C".

Does longer stirring make it stronger? No. Past the point where the blend is uniform you are not dissolving more oil, you are cooling the melt and beating in air. Stirring has a finish line, and it is the same one for a small jug and a large one.

What if my wax page says nothing? Most do not. Chunks, CSI 464 and CSI 468 publish temperatures but no stir time. Two minutes is this cluster's default, and it is a floor rather than a ceiling.
The short answer
Time it, do not judge it: a phone timer costs nothing and removes the only variable in your recipe that most makers estimate. Two minutes is longer at the bench than it feels.
Gently is part of the instruction: the wax page says "stir gently", not vigorously. You want folding, not whipping — air beaten into a melt becomes surface texture and bubbles against the glass.
Cover the wall and the base, not just the middle: the coolest wax in the jug is the film clinging to the metal, and a stir that never reaches it leaves the least mixed wax in the batch to be poured last.

Three published durations in the whole CSI range, and two of them belong to one cordless mixer. The dashed bar is the important one: the three waxes most Indian makers actually pour say nothing about how long to stir, which is why "two minutes" from the fourth wax has become the working default across this cluster — a documented figure borrowed deliberately, with the borrowing declared.

How long should fragrance oil be stirred into candle wax?
Two full minutes, gently, unless a page attached to your material says otherwise. The figure is not invented: Eco Soy CSI 400 is the one CSI wax whose page states a duration — "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly." No other CSI wax page states one at all: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks publishes an add band of 80–90°C and a pour of 75–80°C but no stirring time, and neither CSI 464 nor CSI 468 does either. The only other published figure in the range belongs to a tool: the CSI Pro Mixer page states "For candles: add fragrance to wax at 80-85C, then run mixer for 60-90 seconds until uniform", plus "Avoid using the mixer in wax above 95C" and a longer "90-120 seconds" for blending fragrance into a diffuser carrier. A powered mixer does in ninety seconds what a stick does in two minutes because it delivers far more shear per second — the target is the same, which is a blend with no boundary left in it. Three practical rules follow. Time it rather than judging it, because a melt looks uniform long before it is. Stir gently, since the wax page says gently and air beaten into a melt becomes surface texture. And reach the wall and the base, where the coolest, least-mixed wax in the jug is clinging. Everything after uniformity is cooling, not mixing — which is why stirring for five minutes is not a safer version of stirring for two.

Stirring is the cheapest step in candle making and the one most often done with the wrong object. Read the two candle figures together and they agree rather than compete. A stick and a powered mixer are aiming at the same finish line from different distances. A mixer puts vastly more shear into the melt per second, so it arrives sooner; a bamboo stick moves less material per pass, so it needs longer. What neither page offers is a licence to stop early because the surface looks even, and neither offers a reason to carry on once the blend is uniform.

Stated figures, stated precisely
The CSI Pro Mixer page is worth reading with care, because its body text contradicts itself in places — two different prices appear in the copy and the warranty is described two ways. The listed price is ₹349, and the listing is what governs. We are flagging it rather than quietly quoting the convenient number, and the same principle applies to every figure in this cluster: if a page disagrees with itself, say so. The two-minute count

Two minutes is a long time to stand at a bench, and the honest reason most makers under-stir is not ignorance — it is that 25 seconds of stirring feels like a minute when a jug of hot wax is going cold in your hands. So give the two minutes a structure. Each phase has a job, and the last phase is the one that gets skipped.

The commonest failure is not short stirring. It is stirring a melt that is already too cold to respond. Two minutes at 84°C and two minutes at 66°C are not the same two minutes: cooler wax is more viscous, so the same effort moves less material and the droplets stay coarse. If your process is "melt, cool, weigh the oil, add, stir hard", the stirring is being asked to compensate for a temperature problem it cannot fix. Put the temperature right first — added too cold — and the two minutes will do their own job.

Why "gently" is in the sentence

The stated instruction is not "stir for 2 minutes". It is "stir gently for 2 minutes", and the adverb is doing work. Vigorous stirring of a hot melt does three unhelpful things at once, and none of them shows up until the wax has set.

It entrains air. Bubbles that reach the glass before the wax firms up become visible marks on the finished candle, and bubbles trapped in the body become small voids you will find when you burn it. It accelerates cooling. Agitation moves hot wax to the surface and to the vessel wall, which is exactly where heat leaves, so hard stirring in a cool room can drop you out of the stated band faster than gentle stirring does. And it splashes. Wax on the rim of a jar you are about to fill is a cosmetic problem; hot wax on a hand is not, and neither is wax on a bench you will be working at for the next hour.

Gentle does not mean tentative. It means slow, long and deep rather than fast, short and shallow — the same total movement, distributed through the whole jug instead of churning the top. If you are using the CSI Pro Mixer instead, its page's own ceiling does the same job in a different way: "Avoid using the mixer in wax above 95C". Follow it, and keep the head under the surface while it runs, or a powered mixer becomes the most efficient air-entraining device on your bench.

What stirring fixes and what it cannot

Stirring is cheap, so it gets asked to solve problems that belong to other steps. This table is the boundary. Everything in the left column improves with the stated two minutes; everything in the right column is unaffected by stirring for twenty.

The CSI principle
Every other number on your recipe card is weighed or measured. The stirring time is the only one most makers estimate — and it is the only one that costs nothing to get right.
A load is weighed on a ₹354 scale. A temperature is read off a ₹354 thermometer. A duration needs a timer you already own, and it is still the field left blank most often on a batch sheet.

The bamboo pricing is worth a second look because it is one of the few CSI lines with a genuine volume step: ₹23.60 each in fives, ₹21.24 in fifties and ₹18.88 in hundreds — a 20% drop per stick from the smallest pack to the largest. Does a bigger batch need longer?

No CSI page states a duration by volume, so anyone who tells you "four minutes for a five-kilo melt" is guessing. What you can do instead is scale the check rather than the clock: stir the stated duration, look at the film on the tool, and add passes until it drains as one film. Then write down how many you needed, and that becomes your figure for that jug at that volume.

The arithmetic that matters more is how much oil the stir has to distribute. At this series' convention — load as a share of the finished candle — one kilogram of wax carries 86.96 g of fragrance oil at 8%, because 1,000 × 16 ÷ 184 = 86.96. At 10% it is 111.11 g and at the 13% Chunks states, 149.43 g. The Chunks page phrases its own band as a percentage "of total wax weight", which gives slightly different grams — so write the convention on the recipe card next to the duration. Now cost the stirring on a real run. One hundred 200 g candles at 8% is 18.4 kg of wax and 1.6 kg of oil. Poured a kilogram of wax at a time — roughly what a 1 litre melter holds — that is 19 melts. Nineteen melts at the stated two minutes is 38 minutes of stirring. Nineteen melts at the top of the Pro Mixer's stated 60–90 seconds is 28.5 minutes, and at the bottom of it, 19 minutes. The saving is real but small: 9.5 minutes across a hundred candles. That is not the reason to buy a mixer. The reason is that 19 identical 90-second runs are more alike than 19 hand-stirred two-minute runs at the end of a long afternoon — and the page's stated "30-45 minutes continuous use" per charge covers that 28.5 minutes without a recharge.

Do not stir for longer to compensate for a bigger load. If you have raised the dose to the top of what your wax states — 26 g in a 200 g candle at the 13% Chunks allows — the constraint is the wax's capacity, not your arm. Extra minutes past uniformity only cool the melt, and a cooler melt holds less in solution, so over-stirring a high load moves you in the wrong direction twice. One oil that makes stirring visible

Most incorporation faults are invisible for days. There is one category where they are not, and it is worth pouring deliberately if you want to see your own mixing: an oil whose page states a measurable vanillin content, where uneven distribution and uneven colour arrive together.

What should I stir candle wax with?
A long flat stick for the folding and a flexible blade for the wall and base. Bamboo Stirring Sticks are ₹118 for 5, ₹1,062 for 50 and ₹1,888 for 100 — ₹23.60 down to ₹18.88 each — and one dedicated stick per fragrance avoids cross-contamination without washing. A Silicone Spatula at ₹175.82 states "Heat-resistant up to 250°C" and lifts the cooler film a round stick glides past. Avoid kitchen spoons: short, shallow and rarely dry.
Do I need to stir longer for a bigger batch?
No CSI page states a duration by volume, so scale the check rather than the clock. Stir the stated two minutes, then look at the film draining off the tool: if it breaks into patches, add passes until it does not, and record how many you needed for that jug. One kilogram of wax carries 86.96 g of oil at 8% and 149.43 g at 13%, so a larger melt is distributing proportionally more — but the finish line is uniformity, not minutes.
Does stirring longer make a candle smell stronger?
No. Stirring changes where the oil is, not how much of it is in the jar, and once the blend is uniform there is nothing left for stirring to improve. Under-stirring can cost you throw, because oil that never dissolved migrates to the surface and gets wiped away — so the first two minutes matter. Minutes three to ten do not. Should I stir the dye and the fragrance in together?
You can, and the same passes distribute both. If you are diagnosing a problem, though, separate them: add dye, stir, then add fragrance and run the full stated two minutes, so an uneven colour and an uneven scent have different explanations. Liquid dye needs very little — CSI customer Shanu Shah notes it is "concentrated color so a little amount gives the candle good pastel shade". Never add water-based colour to wax; water is a contamination route, covered in why fragrance oil is not mixing.

Two minutes by hand. Sixty to ninety seconds by machine. Both stated, neither guessed.
