Quick answers — read this first
What actually happens? Below the stated band the wax is thicker, the oil has less mobility and less time, and the result is dispersion instead of dissolution — droplets held in place by setting wax rather than a single blended phase. Setting wax holds them until it doesn't.

When will I find out? Rarely on the night. Expect a glossy film as the jars set, beading within a day, a film that returns after wiping, and a cold throw that reads thin around day seven — the sequence is timed out below.

Is it the same as separation or sweating? Same family, different pages. Cold-adding is one of the causes; separation, oil sitting on top and sweating are the symptoms. This page owns the moment that caused them.

Can I fix it? Usually yes, and this is the good news: unlike an overheated batch, nothing has left the room. Every gram you paid for is still in the jar. Re-melt to the stated band, stir, re-pour — about ₹259.02 of materials on a 24-jar batch holding ₹2,935.44 of wax and oil.
The short answer
"Too cold" is defined by your wax page, not by a rule: below "80-90°C" on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, below the "80 to 90 degrees" on Eco Soy CSI 400. Two other CSI waxes publish no add figure at all — ask rather than assume.
The damage is deferred, not absent: a cold add costs you nothing visible for hours and then produces surface oil, an uneven dose between the first and last jar out of the same jug, and a candle that under-delivers on the load you paid for.
It is the cheapest fault in this cluster to repair: the oil is still in the wax, so a re-melt inside the stated band recovers it. Re-melting costs a wax allowance and a new wick per jar — not a new bottle.

Every other fault in candle making announces itself while you can still do something cheap about it. A cold add does the opposite: it is invisible for an hour, ambiguous for three days, and unarguable at the point where the jars have labels on them. The bar at the top is the only warning that costs nothing to act on — which is why this page spends as much time on the jug as on the jar.
Straight answer
What happens if you add fragrance oil to wax that is too cold?
The oil goes in but does not go into solution, and a candle where the oil is merely suspended behaves differently from one where it is dissolved. "Too cold" means below the band your wax page states: below "Recommended fragrance add temp 80-90°C" on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, or below the "Fragrance Add Temperature 80 to 90 degrees" on Eco Soy CSI 400, whose page also specifies "at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly". Two things happen at once as the melt cools: the wax gets more viscous, so the shear you generate with a stick moves less material and the droplets stay large, and the wax gets closer to setting, so the window in which anything can redistribute is shorter.The consequence is not a weaker candle on the night — it is an unevenly loaded candle that reveals itself over the following fortnight: a glossy film as the jars firm up, beading within a day, a film that comes back after you wipe it, and a cold throw around day seven that does not match the grams on your recipe card. Two dozen 150 g jars built this way hold ₹2,935.44 of wax and oil, and every rupee of the oil is still physically present — which is why the honest headline is not "ruined" but "re-meltable for about ₹259.02". The trap is the diagnosis, not the repair: most makers spend the fortnight blaming the oil, the wax or the jar, because the one variable that moved was never written down. The symptoms have their own guides — separation and oil sitting on top — and the band itself is in at what temperature fragrance oil should be added.
One line: a cold add does not remove fragrance, it fails to dissolve it — so the oil stays in the jar, surfaces over two weeks, and comes back to you as a surface fault rather than a smell you can't find.
A melt that is falling while you weigh the oil is the commonest way to end up under the band. A Pen Thermometer at ₹354 tells you where you are; the 1 litre Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360 stops the fall — its page states Gear I at approximately 70-85°C and Gear II up to 100-120°C, so read the wax band and pick the gear that reaches it.

Where the floor is, and why 65°C sounds sensible

Nobody adds fragrance at 62°C by accident. They do it because three different pages, all of them real, appear to recommend it.

A maker cooling the melt is usually following something they read. Three published figures in the sixties and seventies circulate around a soy pour, and none of them is an add temperature for a CSI soy wax.

The first is a pour temperature. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks states "Pour at 70-80°C" in its steps and "Recommended pour temp 75-80°C" in its table. Pour and add are different moments and the page prints both, in that order: add at 80–90°C, then fill. Read the pour line as the whole instruction and you will cool the melt before the oil goes in rather than after.

The second is a different wax entirely. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states "Melting Point 50°C – 53°C" and "Pour Temperature 58°C – 60°C" — genuine figures for a genuinely lower-temperature wax. A maker who learned those and then switches to soy carries the habit across. It is the same error as carrying 85°C the other way, and the rule runs in both directions: the page attached to the wax in your pot governs.

The third is a general remark on an oil page. Blue Ocean states: "Always add fragrance to wax that has been cooled to the recommended temperature for your wax type - typically 60-65°C for soy wax." The sentence defers to your wax type; the "typically" is an illustration, not a specification. That argument is worked through in the add-temperature guide; this page takes its conclusion — on the two CSI waxes that publish a band, the floor is 80°C.

The fourth figure, and the one nobody expects: the vessel. Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) states "150g fill capacity." and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C." A maker who reads that as an instruction for the whole process will cool the melt to 80°C or below before the oil ever goes in — and on Chunks that puts the add at the very bottom edge of the band or under it. The jar's limit applies to the moment wax touches glass, not to the moment oil touches wax. The sequence that satisfies all three pages is: add at 80–90°C, stir, let the blend fall to the stated 75–80°C pour window, and fill — which is under the jar's stated 85°C as well. Three constraints, one order of operations, no conflict.

Dissolved or merely carried

The whole fault lives in the gap between two words makers use interchangeably. Dissolved means the oil and the wax form a single continuous phase: no boundary anywhere in the jar between one material and the other, and the oil moves only if the wax does. Dispersed means the oil is present as separate droplets held apart by the wax around them. Both look identical in a warm jug and in a freshly set jar. They do not stay identical.

Temperature decides which one you get, through two ordinary properties. The hotter the wax, the lower its viscosity, so the same stroke of the same stick breaks the oil into finer droplets and carries them further. And the hotter the wax, the more time there is before crystallisation locks the structure in place. Cool the melt and you lose both at once: coarser droplets and less time to do anything about them. Which is why the fix is never "stir harder" — a colder melt resists the stirring as well as needing more of it.

Where the oil ends up is a commercial question, not only a technical one. Oil in solution stays in the body of the candle and evaporates from the melt pool while it burns. Oil sitting in droplets near the surface has a shorter route out: it migrates, appears as a film, and gets wiped away by you or by the customer. You bought that oil and it never reached a nose. On 24 jars of 150 g at 8% the oil alone is ₹951.55 at CSI's 500 gm pricing for Eucalyptus Spearmint — not a catastrophe, but not a sum to wipe off with a tissue either.

Stated figures, stated precisely
No CSI page publishes a solubility curve, a droplet size, a viscosity figure or a measurement of how much oil dissolves at a given temperature — and this page does not invent one. What the pages publish is a band to work in and, on one wax, a duration to stir for: Eco Soy CSI 400's "add your fragrance or essential oils at 85°C (185°F), stir gently for 2 minutes, and pour directly." Everything below the level of those two instructions is mechanism and standard practice, offered as a protocol you run yourself. The cold-add clock

This is the table to keep, because it is the one that stops you misattributing the fault. Each row is a moment, what you can see then, and the check that separates an under-temperature add from something else. Note that the two cheapest checks sit in the first two rows.

Two features of that clock matter. The free checks all happen before the batch has any value added to it — before labels, packaging, photography or a customer. And the day 3-to-7 row is the only one that names this fault cleanly: anything can put a film on a candle once, but only oil that was never dissolved keeps putting it back.

Do not judge cold throw at day two and call it a temperature problem. A fresh candle reads weak whatever you did to it, so a day-two verdict cannot separate an incorporation fault from an ordinary uncured candle. Most CSI oil pages state 48–72 hours as a minimum before burn testing — Eucalyptus Spearmint states "Cure time: 48-72 hours" — and this series works to 14–21 days for a commercial soy container candle. The surface evidence in rows two to four is available long before the smell evidence is, which is exactly why this page leads with the surface. Five routes to an under-temperature add

Almost nobody decides to add cold. They arrive there, and there are five well-worn paths. The useful thing about listing them is that four of the five are fixed by changing the order you do things in, which costs nothing at all.

Route 2 deserves the emphasis. A 24-jar batch at 150 g and 8% needs 288 g of fragrance oil, and weighing that accurately is a minute or two of work — a minute or two in which an uncovered jug does nothing but cool. The same minute spent before the wax is up to temperature costs nothing. It is the cheapest process change on the page, and it removes a whole category of cold add rather than compensating for it.

Route 5 surprises people who bought equipment to solve this. CSI customer Priya Singh writes of the 1 litre melter: "Product is very nice its working properly and melt wax very quickly". Quick melting is what it is for; holding an exact figure is a different job, and the page's stated gear ranges are broad. The CSI principle
Heat is not a comfort setting for the wax. It is the only window in which the wax can take the oil into itself rather than merely carry it to the jar.
Cooling the melt before the oil goes in feels careful and responsible. It is the one point in the process where being careful with heat costs you the product, because every mechanism that gets the oil into solution is a mechanism that runs on temperature.

The first-jar, last-jar protocol

One jug, two labels, five minutes. It is the only test in this cluster that needs no extra materials at all.

The logic is simple. If the oil is dissolved, the blend is uniform and every jar filled from that jug carries the same dose — first and last are the same candle. If the oil is merely dispersed, uniformity is a matter of degree, and the jars filled at the start and the end of the pour are the two most likely to differ. The jug gives you a controlled experiment for free, and you are already pouring it. You are not testing the recipe; you are testing whether the recipe was delivered.

You are not asking "is this candle good", you are asking "are these two candles the same". A difference between F and L from one jug is the cleanest evidence of an incorporation fault you will ever collect, and it costs two jars you were making anyway.

Run it on every new scent and wax for the first few batches, then keep it as a spot check, and give the recipe sheet five fields for it: the add reading, the post-add reading, the stirring time, the pour reading, and whether F and L differed. The shape of those numbers is the argument. ₹259.02 to recover ₹2,935.44 of wax and oil is 8.8% — an easy decision, except that it has to be taken before the jars are labelled, photographed and listed, because after that a re-melt costs all of that work again. Option B is usually the wrong instinct: if one under-temperature add caused it, every jar from that jug shares it, and the eight that show it first are simply the eight that show it first.

One caveat on Option A. Re-melting puts the blend through a second heating, which is a small version of the problem the too-hot guide is about. Re-melt to the bottom of the stated band, not above it, stir the stated two minutes, and pour once. Twice through the pot is still a sellable candle; four times while you chase a surface is your margin going into the wax.

Two oils and one vessel, chosen for what their pages actually publish about loads, cure and temperature rather than for their scent families. Note the division of labour: the wax page states the temperature, and the oil page states the load — you need both, and they live in different places. The opposite case, and instructive. The page states "Flashpoint ~191-193°C", a soy load of "6-10%" with "Cure time - 48 to 72 hours", "Paraffin Wax 6-8%" and wax compatibility "All Types". Stated notes: top "Fresh coffee beans - bold, roasted, immediately energising", middle "Dark chocolate, rich espresso - bittersweet, complex, deeply warm", base "Vanilla, caramel - smooth, sweet, grounding". It also states "Vanillin content Present - test in white wax before full batch production" and warns of "slight discolouration or yellowing in white wax over time". On a vanillin-bearing oil an oily film and a colour change arrive in the same fortnight, which makes a cold add harder to see — so run the first-jar, last-jar comparison rather than trusting your eye. It is one of the few CSI vessels stating capacity in grams rather than millilitres, so you can plan a batch from it directly instead of weighing a filled jar first. And its 85°C limit is a pouring constraint that sits above the Chunks stated pour band of 75–80°C — which is why the correct order of operations works: add hot, pour cooler, no page contradicted. Wick sizing follows the diameter, not the weight, so re-test the wick if you are moving jar size.

Do not change the oil to fix a temperature problem. It is the most expensive available response and it tests the wrong variable. If the melt was under the band, every oil in the catalogue would have behaved the same way, so trading a ₹3,068-per-kilogram oil for a dearer one proves nothing and raises your unit cost permanently. Re-run the same oil at the stated band first. Only when a correctly added, correctly cured batch still underperforms does the oil become a suspect — and the ordered diagnosis for that lives in weak cold throw.

What happens if fragrance oil is added to wax that is too cold?
It disperses instead of dissolving. Cooler wax is more viscous and closer to setting, so droplets are coarser and there is less time to even out. The candle looks normal on pour night, then produces a glossy film as it sets, beading within a day, and a film that returns after wiping. "Too cold" means below your wax page's stated band — below 80–90°C on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. Nothing evaporated, so the batch is usually recoverable by re-melting.
Is 65°C too cold to add fragrance oil to soy wax?
On the two CSI soy waxes that publish a figure, yes — it is below their stated band rather than merely cooler. Chunks states "80-90°C"; Eco Soy CSI 400 states 85°C within "80 to 90 degrees". The 60–65°C figure does appear on CSI oil pages — Blue Ocean calls it "typically 60-65°C for soy wax" — but that sentence explicitly defers to "the recommended temperature for your wax type". Follow the wax page; ask CSI where it is silent.
Can I just re-melt the candles and pour them again?
Usually, and it is cheap. Empty the jars into your pot, bring the blend back to the bottom of the wax's stated add band, stir for the stated two minutes, and re-pour at the stated pour temperature. On a 24-jar batch of 150 g candles that recovers ₹2,935.44 of wax and oil for about ₹259.02 — a 4% loss allowance plus 24 new wicks at ₹5.90. Wicks are not reusable and the jars need washing. Re-melt once, deliberately; repeated cycles expose the blend to heat again and again.
How do I tell a cold add from too much fragrance oil?
Check your recipe card first, because that is free. If your dose is inside the wax's stated ceiling — up to 13% on Chunks, up to 10% on CSI 464 — an over-ceiling load is ruled out and temperature or stirring moves up the list. The other discriminator is uniformity: an over-ceiling load affects every jar equally, while a cold add often differs between the first and last jar from the same jug. The load side is covered in too much fragrance oil.
Does adding fragrance oil cold make the candle smell weaker?
Not immediately, and not because anything was destroyed. Every gram is still in the jar on pour night. What changes is where the oil is: undissolved oil migrates toward the surface, and oil that has reached the surface can be wiped away, absorbed by packaging or simply lost before the candle is ever lit. By day seven the cold throw can read thinner than the dose you weighed. Prove it against a control jar from the same bottle rather than guessing — the method is in testing after curing.
My wax page states no add temperature. What do I do?
Ask, rather than borrow a figure. CSI 464 states "Melting Point 80°C – 90°C" and "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C" but no add temperature; CSI 468 states melt "50°C – 53°C" and pour "58°C – 60°C" with none either. A pour figure is not an add figure, and CSI 468's entire working range sits 20–30°C below the soy waxes, so carrying 85°C across would be a guess in the opposite direction.
