How Much Annual Profit Could I Gain by Reducing the Raw-Material Cost of a Bestseller by Only ₹10 per Candle at 1,000 Units per Month?
Share
What does it really net? It depends on what the ₹10.00 is. If it is the same material in a better pack, almost all of it: a lot check costs ₹1,144.92 and pays back in about 3.4 days. If it is a different material, subtract the tests and stranded stock: on the worked candle ₹12,469.52, paid back in about 37 days, leaving ₹1,07,530.48 over the saving's first twelve months.
Where can a real ₹10.00 come from? On a worked 200 g Pumpkin Spice bestseller, moving the oil from 500 g to 1 kg bottles saves ₹9.44 a candle, almost exactly your ₹10.00, with no formula change. Adding the wax step (Natural Soy Pearl 1 kg → 5 kg, ₹4.64) makes ₹14.08. Wicks save nothing in bigger packs.
Is ₹10.00 a lot? In framing terms it is 3–5% of a typical candle's materials: 3.0% of ₹333.33, 4.0% of ₹250.00, 5.0% of ₹200.00 (3.6% of the worked candle). Small per candle, large per year. The trap is spending it twice: if the ₹10.00 needs a three-month order, the extra cash costs ₹15,292.80 a year at a worked 1.5% a month.

The arithmetic, and how big ₹10.00 is
The two figures in your title are yours: a ₹10.00 saving per candle and 1,000 candles a month. The arithmetic is simple: saving × candles a month × 12. ₹10.00 × 1,000 = ₹10,000.00 a month; × 12 = ₹1,20,000.00 a year. Because only the cost changes, all of it is extra gross profit, before tax and before anything you do with the cash.
How big is that relative to the candle? As a framing, not a rule: on candles whose materials cost ₹200.00 to ₹333.33, ₹10.00 is 5.0% down to 3.0% of cost (at ₹250.00, 4.0%). That is why ₹10.00 often looks too small to bother with on a BOM. Look at it against profit instead. On the worked candle below, at ₹499.00 with materials at ₹281.64, price minus materials is ₹217.36; ₹10.00 lifts that by 4.6%, from ₹26,08,320.00 to ₹27,28,320.00 a year.
Where a real ₹10.00 comes from at CSI prices
A worked bestseller makes the ₹10.00 concrete. Everything here is a worked example except CSI's prices: a 200 g Pumpkin Spice candle at 8% (16 g oil, 184 g wax, total-weight basis), bought the way many makers buy before they check the ladders: oil in 500 g bottles, Natural Soy Pearl Wax in 1 kg bags, Eco C2 wicks, and the reader's own jar and box.
| Line | Quantity | Bought as | Unit price | ₹ per candle | % of COGS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance: Pumpkin Spice | 16 g | 500 g bottle | ₹5.90 a gram | ₹94.40 | 33.5% |
| Wax: Natural Soy Pearl | 184 g | 1 kg bag | ₹450.00 a kg | ₹82.80 | 29.4% |
| Jar with lid (yours) | 1 | your supplier | ₹70.00 (worked example) | ₹70.00 | 24.9% |
| Box (yours) | 1 | your supplier | ₹25.00 (worked example) | ₹25.00 | 8.9% |
| Wick: Eco C2 | 1 | 10-pack | per wick | ₹9.44 | 3.4% |
| Total | 200 g candle | ₹281.64 | 100.0% |
| Lever | From → to | Saving per candle | Per year at 1,000 a month | Monthly quantity at 1,000 candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oil: Pumpkin Spice | 500 g → 1 kg bottles | ₹9.44 | ₹1,13,280.00 | 16 kg: ₹84,960.00 in 1 kg bottles against ₹94,400.00 in 500 g |
| Wax: Natural Soy Pearl | 1 kg → 5 kg bags | ₹4.64 | ₹55,641.60 | 184 kg: about 36.8 bags of 5 kg (₹78,163.20) |
| Wick: Eco C2 | 10s → 100s or 1,000s | nothing | nothing | one 1,000-pack (₹9,440.00) |
| Both pack changes | ₹14.08 | ₹1,68,921.60 | no extra cash: still about a month of stock |
The oil step alone is ₹9.44, within a few paise of your ₹10.00, and it changes nothing a customer can detect: the same oil from a bigger bottle. Pumpkin Spice is an unusual ladder: its 100 g and 500 g cost the same per gram, and the drop comes only at 1 kg. Among the in-stock oils whose page states a candle load, its ₹0.59-a-gram step from 500 g to 1 kg is the largest CSI lists, shared with Cinnamon. Other oils give much less at that step, and on some the 1 kg costs the same as or more than two 500 g bottles, so check your own oil before you count it.
The wax step is smaller, ₹4.64, and it stops at 5 kg: Natural Soy Pearl costs the same per kilo in 5 kg, 10 kg and 50 kg bags. Argued against our own interest: at 1,000 candles a month you already use 184 kg of wax and 16 kg of oil a month; once you buy the 1 kg bottle and the 5 kg bag, CSI's list has no further step. CSI lists no fragrance pack above 1 kg, and no 25 kg or 100 kg wax packs. Volume pricing at this scale is a WhatsApp conversation, and we will not print a discount here that we have not agreed with you; how to judge a supplier's 5 kg offer is the 5 kg fragrance pack post.
What switching costs, and how fast it pays back
Every saving has a one-off cost before it starts. Two very different cases, both priced on the worked candle: test candles at its full material cost (₹281.64 each, conservative) and labour at ₹150.00 an hour (worked example; use your own).
| Kind of ₹10.00 | What you must do first | One-off cost | Payback | Kept, first 12 months of saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same material, bigger pack | a lot check: 3 candles from the new bottle against retained candles, 2 hours | ₹1,144.92 | about 3.4 days | ₹1,18,855.08 |
| Different material (oil or wax) | 18 test candles (₹5,069.52), 10 hours (₹1,500.00), old stock stranded (₹5,900.00) | ₹12,469.52 | about 37 days (1.25 months) | ₹1,07,530.48 |
| A test that fails | the tests and labour, nothing stranded, no saving | ₹6,569.52 | never; about 20 days of a ₹10.00 saving | a loss of ₹6,569.52 |
At 1,000 candles a month, ₹10.00 a candle is ₹328.77 a day, so even the full material-change programme pays back in about 37 days. That is the real meaning of "only ₹10.00" at this volume: almost any saving that survives a proper test is worth testing for, and a failed test is a cheap lesson. The risk is not the test cost; it is rolling out an untested change across a bestseller and losing sales you cannot see in the BOM.
For the pack change, the "lot check" is not a reformulation: you are confirming that the new bottle behaves like the old one. Pour a few candles from it, burn them beside retained candles, and compare scent and colour. What to compare when a supplier sends a new batch of a bestselling scent is the new-batch comparison post. Ask us for the lot number on dispatch so you can match it to your records.
Cash tied up: when ₹10.00 needs a bigger order
At CSI, the ₹9.44 oil step needs no extra cash at this volume: 16 kg a month is 16 one-kilo bottles instead of 32 half-kilo bottles, the same month of stock. But many "₹10.00 savings" arrive with a condition: a supplier's bigger pack, minimum order or three-month commitment. Then part of the saving is paid for with cash sitting on your shelf.
Price it as the diagram shows. Buying one month of oil at a time (₹84,960.00 at CSI's 1 kg price) keeps on average about half a month in stock, ₹42,480.00. Buying three months at once (₹2,54,880.00) keeps about a month and a half, ₹1,27,440.00. The extra ₹84,960.00 costs you whatever that cash would otherwise earn or save; at a worked 1.5% a month (your own cost of money: an overdraft, a loan, or the return you would get elsewhere), that is ₹1,274.40 a month, ₹15,292.80 a year, 12.7% of the gross ₹1,20,000.00. At 3% a month it would be ₹30,585.60. The saving is still positive, but it is no longer ₹1,20,000.00.
There is a quality side too. Oil that sits for months is oil you have committed to before you know whether the next batch of candles will sell; CSI publishes no oil shelf-life figure in the text we captured, so ask for documentation on WhatsApp before you plan to hold several months. And a three-month order of a bestseller's oil is three months in which you cannot easily switch if the scent's sales move.
Sensitivity: 500, 1,000 and 2,000 a month
The same ₹10.00 at half and double your volume. The one-off material-change cost (₹12,469.52) is the same at every volume, so it matters more at 500 a month and almost disappears at 2,000; the holding cost of a three-month order grows with volume because the stock grows.
| Candles a month | Gross a year | Material-change payback | Holding cost a year (3-month order) | First year, worst case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | ₹60,000.00 | about 75 days | ₹7,646.40 | ₹39,884.08 |
| 1,000 (your figure) | ₹1,20,000.00 | about 37 days | ₹15,292.80 | ₹92,237.68 |
| 2,000 | ₹2,40,000.00 | about 19 days | ₹30,585.60 | ₹1,96,944.88 |
Even the worst case in the table, a material change that needs a three-month order, keeps most of the gross at every volume. That is why, at bestseller volumes, the right question is not "is ₹10.00 worth it?" but "will the change pass, and will customers notice?". If the ₹10.00 is a pack change with no test and no extra cash, the first-year figure is close to the gross: ₹1,18,855.08 at 1,000 a month.
Before you bank it: the test gate
The method belongs to the change-control series; this page sets the money. Testing cheaper alternatives without risking a bestseller is the 10% cost-reduction testing post; when a supplier reformulates an oil but keeps its name, what to repeat is the reformulated-oil post. How much oil to order for 1,000 candles once the formula is fixed is the 1,000 × 200 g order post, and how many wicks to hold at 1,000 a month is the 1,000-a-month wick inventory post.
Keeping that before-and-after BOM honest after rejects and labour is the before-and-after BOM post; ranking several SKUs by annual rupee opportunity rather than per-candle saving is the ten-SKU post.

Skip for this decision: the 50 kg Pearl bag bought for a discount (it is the same per kilo as the 5 kg), any wick pack bigger than a month (flat per wick), and any fragrance pack you would need to hold for months to earn a price you could get monthly.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oil, wax and wicks named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our wicks save nothing in bigger packs, that our 50 kg wax bag is no cheaper per kilo than the 5 kg, that we list no fragrance pack above 1 kg, and that a three-month order can cost you more in cash than you think.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026, size by size. The Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date (not used here); every size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
