My 200 g Candle Costs ₹310 to Make and I Need to Bring It Below ₹220 Without Making It Feel Cheaper — Should I Optimise the Jar, Fragrance Load, Wax or Packaging First?
Share
So can I get below ₹220.00 without it feeling cheaper? Not from raw materials alone, on these numbers. The best path that keeps your jar and your 200 g fill lands at ₹261.24, still ₹41.24 above target. Closing that would need a jar at ₹35.76 or less, and the only CSI 200 ml jar that cheap, the clear Salsa at ₹29.50, looks different and holds less than 200 g of wax. Rebuilt in it with a 160 g fill, the candle costs ₹213.27: under target, but a smaller product.
Is wax the place to save? Rarely first. Our cheapest soy wax would save this candle ₹14.90, and only after a full retest. Bigger CSI wax packs save nothing: the 10 kg Luxury Soy Wax Chunks costs ₹9.00 more than ten 1 kg bags.
What is it worth in a year, and when do the tests pay back? At 300 candles a month (worked example; use your own), the three steps save ₹48.76 a candle: ₹14,628.00 a month, ₹1,75,536.00 a year. The two candle tests cost ₹5,733.60 together and pay back in about 0.4 months; at 100 candles a month, about 1.2 months.

Step 1: your true BOM, ranked
You gave us two numbers: ₹310.00 to make and a ₹220.00 target. That is a ₹90.00 cut, 29.0% of the candle. You did not give us the split, so the table below is an illustrative split that sums to your ₹310.00. Every line is labelled as the reader's own supplier's figure, not a CSI price, and not a claim that your supplier is overpriced. Replace each line with yours; the method does not change.
| Rank | Line | Quantity | Unit price (reader's) | ₹ per candle | % of COGS | Customer sees it? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fragrance oil | 20 g (10% of 200 g) | ₹4,800.00 per kg (₹4.80 a gram) | ₹96.00 | 31.0% | Only as throw |
| 2 | Soy wax | 180 g | ₹480.00 per kg | ₹86.40 | 27.9% | Only as finish and burn |
| 3 | Glass jar with lid | 1 | ₹77.00 | ₹77.00 | 24.8% | Yes, first thing |
| 4 | Printed retail box | 1 | ₹39.00 | ₹39.00 | 12.6% | Yes, at unboxing |
| 5 | Wick | 1 | ₹6.00 | ₹6.00 | 1.9% | Only as flame |
| 6 | Label + dye | 1 set | ₹5.60 | ₹5.60 | 1.8% | Yes (label) |
| Total | 200 g candle | — | ₹310.00 | 100.0% | — |
Fragrance and wax hold 58.8% of the cost, and the customer never sees either directly; they experience throw and burn. The jar and box hold 37.4%, and the customer sees both before lighting the candle. That split sets the order of attack. The bottom two lines are under 4% together: no cleverness there finds ₹90.00.
How to build the table properly (price ÷ pack grams × grams used, lid and label included, the traps of pricing oil at a sample size) is the ranking mechanics post; the per-ingredient worksheet is the cost-per-gram worksheet. The full audit, with a visible-to-customer flag and a test for every line, is the complete BOM audit.
The order of attack, in rupees
The same candle, one step at a time, on the reader's prices except where a CSI product replaces a line. No step is stacked on a saving it overlaps.
| Step | Lever | Customer sees it? | Test first? | Saving per candle | Running cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | True BOM ranked; rejects found | — | — | none yet | ₹310.00 |
| 2a | Fragrance load 10% → 8% (your oil, your wax) | No, if throw holds | Yes: 9-candle ladder | ₹17.28 | ₹292.72 |
| 2b | Oil pack size | No | No | nothing here (₹4.80 a gram is already a bulk price) | ₹292.72 |
| 2c | Wick | No | Yes, if changed | leave it (1.9% of COGS) | ₹292.72 |
| 3a | Printed retail box → Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm | Yes | Buyer feedback | ₹16.58 | ₹276.14 |
| 3b | Jar | Yes | — | keep it: no in-stock CSI jar stated to hold 200 g costs less | ₹276.14 |
| 4 | Wax → Eco Soy CSI 400 | Finish only | Yes: full-life burn | ₹14.90 | ₹261.24 |
| Gap left to ₹220.00 | only a visible jar change, a smaller fill or a price change closes it | ₹41.24 | |||
2a. Fragrance load: the biggest invisible lever, if the test says so
Fragrance is 31.0% of this candle. Dropping from 10% to 8% of total weight cuts the oil from 20 g to 16 g, worth ₹19.20 at ₹4.80 a gram. The fill stays 200 g, so 4 g of wax replaces the oil and costs ₹1.92: net ₹17.28 a candle. It exists only if your blind burn test shows 8% throws as well as 10%. Some oils need the higher load and some do not; nobody honest can tell you which yours is without that test. How to find the lowest load that still throws is the lowest effective load post; whether 7% performs like 10% on an expensive oil is the 7% versus 10% test; the money side of 10% → 8% at volume is the 10% to 8% savings post.
2b. Oil pack size: real money on small bottles, little or none on big ones
Same oil, same candle: a pure purchasing change, worth a lot on small bottles and little at 500 g or more. Woody Oud shows both halves. From 15 g to 100 g its price per gram falls from ₹6.21 to ₹4.53; on a 16 g candle, moving from the 50 g bottle to the 100 g saves ₹14.35. From 100 g to 1 kg it is ₹4.53 at every size: nothing more to gain. Across the catalogue, of the 78 oils CSI sells in both 500 g and 1 kg, the 1 kg costs the same as two 500 g packs on 24 and slightly more on 20. At ₹4.80 a gram our reader already pays a bulk price: check, then move on. Whether a supplier's 5 kg offer is worth the cash is the 5 kg fragrance pack post.
2c and 2d. The wick, and the rejects
The wick is 1.9% of this candle; CSI's Eco C1 at ₹5.90 is only ₹0.10 less than the reader's ₹6.00. Saving paise on a wick risks soot, tunnelling or a hot jar. Rejects are the opposite: if 5% of what you pour is rejected, cutting rejects is the cheapest invisible saving you have and needs no reformulation (the true-cost post). The wider list of invisible levers is the invisible efficiencies post.
3. Packaging and the jar: the customer sees these
Next, what the customer sees: box and jar hold 37.4% of this candle. Replacing a ₹39.00 printed retail box with a plain kraft Corrugated Box 11 x 11 x 8 cm at ₹22.42 saves ₹16.58. It changes the unboxing, and any sleeve you add to keep it premium comes off the saving. Whether premium outer packaging should take this big a share at all is the ₹45 box and ₹70 jar post. The jar is harder: the in-stock CSI jars stated to hold 200 g or more start at ₹150.00, CSI's 200 ml jars hold less than 200 g (next section), and a cheaper jar is the most visible change of all. How to test whether buyers notice is the jar-perception test; the container-first case is the jar-first post.
4. Wax, last
Our illustrative reader pays ₹480.00 a kilo. Only two CSI soy waxes are cheaper: Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg (₹10.16 a candle saved) and Eco Soy CSI 400 at ₹399.00 (₹14.90 saved). That is wax's ceiling here, and it needs the longest test of any step (table two sections down).
The CSI-priced rebuild, and the 200 ml problem
Now the same candle priced entirely on CSI's list (the series' reference lines): 184 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at the 10 kg tier, 16 g of Woody Oud at its 1 kg per-gram price, one Eco C2 wick, a box, and either your own jar or a CSI jar. Woody Oud stands in for "a real oil at a real price"; if your candle is a different scent, swapping oils is a scent change, not a saving.
| Line | Reader now (200 g, 10%) | Rebuild A: CSI, your jar, 200 g | % of A | Rebuild B: CSI clear Salsa, 160 g fill | What the customer notices |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 180 g at ₹480.00/kg = ₹86.40 | 184 g Chunks = ₹110.38 | 37.1% | 147.2 g Chunks = ₹88.31 | Nothing if it passes; a new wax is a full retest |
| Fragrance | 20 g at ₹4.80/g = ₹96.00 | 16 g Woody Oud = ₹72.50 | 24.4% | 12.8 g Woody Oud = ₹58.00 | Load: nothing if the test passes. A different oil: the scent |
| Wick | ₹6.00 | Eco C2 ₹9.44 | 3.2% | Eco C2 ₹9.44 | Nothing if it burns cleanly; burn-test it |
| Jar | ₹77.00 | your jar ₹77.00 | 25.9% | clear Salsa at 50+ ₹29.50 | B: a different look, a lug cap, less candle |
| Box | printed ₹39.00 | Corrugated 11 x 11 x 8 cm ₹22.42 | 7.5% | ₹22.42 | Plain kraft instead of a printed box |
| Label + dye | ₹5.60 | ₹5.60 (yours) | 1.9% | ₹5.60 (yours) | Nothing |
| Total | ₹310.00 | ₹297.34 | 100.0% | ₹213.27 | — |
| Against ₹220.00 | ₹90.00 above | ₹77.34 above | — | ₹6.73 below | — |
| Per gram of candle | ₹1.55 | ₹1.49 | — | ₹1.33 | — |
Rebuild A is the honest headline: on CSI's list, in your own jar, the candle costs ₹297.34, only ₹12.66 less than now. The Chunks wax costs ₹22.06 more than the reader's, the C2 wick ₹3.44 more; the box, the 8% load and Woody Oud's per-gram price make up the difference. A different supplier, even us, is not a shortcut to ₹220.00.
Rebuild B gets under the target at ₹213.27, cheaper per gram too (₹1.33 against ₹1.55). But it is a 160 g candle in a clear jar with a lug cap: the customer sees the jar, and the net weight on your label changes (check current Legal Metrology requirements; not legal advice).
For scale, CSI's 200 ml jars span ₹29.50 (clear Salsa in 50s) to ₹70.80 (matte, frosted and glossy, flat at 5 and 10): ₹41.30 a candle between the cheapest and dearest jar of the same capacity. Coloured Salsa jars sit between at ₹62.00, flat at every pack. The maximum jar cost your price can carry is the maximum container cost post; if you do change jars, what must be retested even with the same wax and oil is the jar-change retest post.
Why wax goes last, and why bigger packs save nothing
Wax is 27.9% of the illustrative candle, not small. It goes last for three reasons: a wax change re-opens wick size, hot throw, top finish, glass adhesion, frosting and cure; the saving is capped by how far below your price a wax you would actually test sits; and at CSI, buying more of the same wax barely moves the price per kilo.
| Wax | 184 g, smallest pack | 184 g, cheapest pack | vs reader's ₹88.32 | Stated load ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reader's wax (illustrative, ₹480.00 per kg) | ₹88.32 | ₹88.32 | — | yours |
| Eco Soy CSI 400 | ₹73.42 | ₹73.42 (1 kg) | ₹14.90 cheaper | not stated in the text we captured |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹82.80 | ₹78.16 (5 kg+) | ₹10.16 cheaper | not stated in the text we captured |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | ₹95.68 | ₹93.36 (1 kg to 10 kg) | ₹5.04 dearer | up to 10% |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹110.03 | ₹110.03 (500 g) | ₹21.71 dearer | up to 13% |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | ₹119.60 | ₹117.21 (5 kg+) | ₹28.89 dearer | up to 13% |
Now the pack ladders (every price is in the sources strip). From the 1 kg bag upwards, only two in-stock waxes on CSI's list get cheaper per kilo in bigger packs: Natural Soy Pearl (5.6% from 5 kg) and CSI 468 (2% from 5 kg). Chunks, CSI 464 and Eco Soy CSI 400 are flat; the 10 kg Chunks bag is ₹9.00 dearer than ten 1 kg bags, the 5 kg Eco Soy ₹1.00 dearer than five 1 kg bags. CSI lists no 25 kg or 100 kg wax packs (Natural Soy Pearl's 50 kg is the largest wax pack on the list), so for commercial volumes the price is a conversation on WhatsApp, and we will not quote a discount here that we have not agreed with you. What moving from 10 kg to 25 kg or 100 kg could do is the commercial wax quantities post.
Put the scale in rupees. A ₹20.00-a-kilo cut on 184 g of wax is ₹3.68 a candle; even a ₹100.00-a-kilo cut is ₹18.40. Neither closes a ₹90.00 gap. Move wax up the order only when yours costs far more per kilo than a wax you would genuinely test, or when the test you need for another reason is a full reformulation anyway. If your cheaper wax would need more fragrance or more rework, the saving can vanish: that is the wax-is-a-small-share post, and the change-control maths of a cheaper-wax saving is the cheaper-wax revalidation post.
Test gate, annual saving and payback
No step reaches a customer until it passes a controlled test: one change at a time, at least three candles per arm, everything else identical, burned to the end, judged blind. This page owns the money; the method belongs to the change-control series: how to test cheaper alternatives without risking a bestseller, and the one-page change-control form to record what changed and what was retested.
| Change | Saving per candle | Per month | Per year | One-off test cost | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Load 10% → 8% (9 candles: 3 each at 10, 9, 8%) | ₹17.28 | ₹5,184.00 | ₹62,208.00 | ₹3,210.84 | 0.6 months |
| Printed box → kraft (buyer feedback, no candles) | ₹16.58 | ₹4,974.00 | ₹59,688.00 | nothing if old boxes are used up; ₹7,800.00 if 200 are scrapped | at once; 1.6 months if scrapped |
| Wax → Eco Soy CSI 400 (6 candles: 3 control, 3 new) | ₹14.90 | ₹4,470.00 | ₹53,640.00 | ₹2,522.76 | 0.6 months |
| All three | ₹48.76 | ₹14,628.00 | ₹1,75,536.00 | ₹5,733.60 (candle tests) | 0.4 months |
Sensitivity: at 100 candles a month the same three steps are worth ₹58,512.00 a year and the load test takes about 1.9 months to pay back; at 1,000 a month they are worth ₹5,85,120.00. The load test costs ₹777.60 of oil, ₹786.24 of wax, ₹693.00 of jars, ₹54.00 of wicks and ₹900.00 of labour; the wax test ₹399.00 of Eco Soy plus ₹264.96 of control wax, ₹460.80 of oil, ₹462.00 of jars, ₹36.00 of wicks and ₹900.00 of labour. Every test candle is priced at full cost, and the payback is still short. If the new wax needs a different wick, add a wick bracket and re-run the payback.
Whether every cost change needs the full validation of a new candle is the validation-depth post; running the trial without losing track of what changed is the one-change-at-a-time post.
What to buy, and what to skip
Six items the rebuild uses, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 4 October 2026; CSI publishes no throw or burn data, so nothing is ranked on performance. Counts use 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil per 200 g candle.

Skip for this decision: coloured Salsa (₹62.00) and the 200 ml matte, frosted and glossy jars (₹70.80) are 200 ml, flat-priced and dearer than the clear Salsa. CSI 464 and Chunks are no saving at ₹480.00 a kilo. And the 10 kg bag of anything flat-priced buys cash on a shelf, not a lower price.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wax, oil, wicks, jars and boxes named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our 10 kg wax costs more than ten 1 kg bags, that our Chunks and CSI 464 cost more than the illustrative reader's wax, that our C2 wick costs more than theirs, and that our cheapest 200 ml jar cannot hold a 200 g candle.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged where it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Non-price figures: the reader's ₹310.00 and ₹220.00 are the reader's own figures; the six-line split (jar ₹77.00, printed box ₹39.00, fragrance at ₹4,800.00 per kg, wax at ₹480.00 per kg, wick ₹6.00, label and dye ₹5.60) and the 10% starting load are an illustrative split, not CSI prices and not a claim about any supplier. Load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; at 10% = 20 g + 180 g). The 160 g Salsa fill, 5% rejects, 300 candles a month, ₹150.00 an hour, 200 scrapped boxes and the test-candle counts are worked examples; the 0.86–0.9 ml-to-g factor and 1–1.5 cm headspace are rules of thumb. Wax ceilings are as the pages state (Chunks and CSI 468 up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%; none captured for Eco Soy CSI 400 or Natural Soy Pearl): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Costs are materials only and exclude labour (except in the test-cost lines), freight, GST and marketing. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
