How Much Money Do You Need to Start a Candle Business in India?
Share
What does a real side income cost to stock? Around ₹16,417.20 for the first month at about 50 candles: ₹12,995.20 of materials and ₹3,422.00 of tools including the Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00. From month two only the materials repeat.
How much of a candle's cost is the jar? At a 150 g fill in a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid, the glass is ₹94.40 of a ₹217.14 material cost — about 43%. The wax is ₹76.11, roughly 35%.
Does buying in bulk make candles cheaper? Barely, on published prices. CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg alike. Going from a 500 gm oil pack to a 1 kg pack saves ₹1.42 per candle. Bulk saves you freight events and hours, not rupees per kilo.
The four levels, and what each one actually costs
Search results for this question usually give one round number, and the number is usually wrong for the person reading it, because a person testing a hobby and a person stocking 600 units a month are not doing the same thing. So this page prices four separate baskets from live CSI variants in September 2026, every one of them built the same way: a wax, a fragrance, a wick, a vessel, a wick sticker, plus the tools that level genuinely needs. The wax is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 throughout, so the levels are comparable; the fragrance load is 8% of wax weight, which is the middle of the range for most CSI oils and well inside the 10% ceiling the CSI 464 page publishes.
One assumption is stated up front and used everywhere below: 5% wastage on wax and fragrance — residue in the pitcher, a jar poured short, a batch you reject. That is an assumption for planning, not measured data, and your real figure will emerge after twenty batches. Wick, jar and sticker counts include no spares in the totals; buy spares at the next pack size up.
| Level | What it makes | Materials from CSI | Tools from CSI | Total from CSI | Repeats? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Trial | 10 × 70 g votives, once | ₹1,386.20 | ₹590.00 | ₹1,976.20 | No — one-off |
| 2 · Side income | about 50 × 150 g jars a month | ₹12,995.20 | ₹3,422.00 | ₹16,417.20 | Materials only, ₹12,995.20/month |
| 3 · Small brand | about 120 × 150 g + 80 × 70 g a month | ₹38,753.80 | ₹4,739.00 | ₹43,492.80 | Materials only, ₹38,753.80/month |
| 4 · Production | about 600 × 150 g a month | ₹1,45,717.00 | ₹26,974.00 | ₹1,72,691.00 | Materials only, ₹1,45,717.00/month |
Read the right-hand column before the totals. Level 1 is a purchase and it is over. Levels 2, 3 and 4 are a month of stock: the tools are bought once, the materials come back round every four weeks. That single distinction is the difference between “I need ₹1,72,691.00 to start” — which frightens people out of the trade — and “I need ₹26,974.00 of equipment and ₹1,45,717.00 of working capital per cycle”, which is a plan.
Level 1 · The trial: ₹1,976.20 for ten candles
The purpose of Level 1 is not revenue. It is to find out, for the price of a decent dinner, whether you like standing over a melter in a Chennai May, whether your pours come out flat, and whether the scent you loved in the bottle survives in wax. Ten candles is enough to learn all three and cheap enough that quitting costs nothing.
| Line | Pack bought | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 | 700 g used at 70 g a candle; 300 g spare for a re-pour |
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 100 gm | ₹342.20 | 56 g used at 8% of wax weight; 44 g spare |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 20 wicks | ₹118.00 | ₹5.90 each — ten candles and ten spares |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | Pack of 10 | ₹318.60 | ₹31.86 each, stated 70 gram fill |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 40 stickers | ₹100.00 | ₹2.50 each — 30 spare |
| Materials subtotal | ₹1,386.20 | ||
| Pen Thermometer | 1 | ₹354.00 | Non-negotiable — see the fail box below |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks | Pack of 5 | ₹118.00 | Two clean minutes of stirring per batch |
| Wick Centering Device | Pack of 5 | ₹118.00 | Keeps the wick upright while soy sets |
| Tools subtotal | ₹590.00 | ||
| Level 1 total | ₹1,976.20 | One-off |
What one candle actually consumes at this level is ₹94.94: ₹35.52 of wax, ₹19.16 of oil at the small-pack rate, ₹5.90 of wick, ₹31.86 of glass and ₹2.50 of sticker. The gap between that and ₹1,386.20 divided by ten is the spare stock you deliberately bought. Do not treat ₹94.94 as your cost of goods yet — you have not measured your own wastage.
What Level 1 cannot do: it cannot photograph a range, because ten identical votives are one product; it cannot test a second wick size, because you bought one; it cannot survive a failed pour week before a market stall. It also cannot tell you anything about demand. It tells you about your own hands.
Level 2 · Side income: about 50 candles a month
Level 2 is the first level that behaves like a business: one size, two scents, a repeatable month. Fifty 150 g jar candles is a realistic ceiling for evenings and weekends around a job, and it is enough to supply an Instagram page, a couple of local stores and a small festive order without promising more than you can pour.
| Line | Pack bought | Price | Cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg | ₹4,059.20 | 8 kg — 7.5 kg poured plus the 5% wastage assumption |
| British Rose + Citrus Lemon | 500 gm each | ₹3,013.00 | 1 kg of oil at 12 g a candle — about 83 candles, so roughly 1.6 months |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 100 wicks | ₹590.00 | ₹5.90 each — 50 candles and 50 spares |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 5 × Pack of 10 | ₹4,720.00 | 50 jars at ₹94.40 each |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 2 × 40 | ₹200.00 | 80 stickers |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | Pack of 500 (1 inch) | ₹413.00 | ₹0.83 each — ten months of base labels |
| Materials subtotal | ₹12,995.20 | ||
| Mini Electric Wax Melter | 1 litre | ₹2,360.00 | Replaces the double boiler; the single biggest change at this level |
| Steel Pouring Pitcher | Large, 600 ML | ₹708.00 | Clean pour into a 150 g jar |
| Candle Making Weighing Scale | 1 | ₹354.00 | Stock is thin in September 2026 — any 1 g kitchen scale does the same job |
| Tools subtotal | ₹3,422.00 | ||
| Level 2, month one | ₹16,417.20 | From month two: about ₹12,995.20 |
One candle at Level 2 costs ₹217.14 in CSI materials: ₹76.11 of wax, ₹38.23 of oil at the 500 gm pack rate, ₹5.90 of wick, ₹94.40 of glass and ₹2.50 of sticker. Multiply by fifty and you get ₹10,857.10 of goods in the month — which is most, but not all, of the ₹12,995.20 materials line, because the oil and the wicks you bought stretch past this month.
What Level 2 cannot do: it cannot take a 200-unit Diwali corporate order at three weeks' notice, because 200 candles need 30 kg of wax, 200 jars and a cure window you do not have. It cannot absorb a failed batch without eating the month's margin. And it cannot hold a range — two scents in one size is a product, not a collection.
Level 3 · A small brand: two sizes, four scents, about 200 a month
Level 3 is where the word “brand” starts to be honest: two fill sizes so you have a gift price and a hero price, four scents so a customer can choose, and enough stock cover that a store order does not empty the shelf. The basket below is 120 × 150 g jars and 80 × 70 g votives in a month — 23.6 kg of poured wax, so 25 kg bought against the 5% wastage assumption.
| Line | Pack bought | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 2 × 10 kg + 5 kg | ₹12,685.00 | 25 kg at a flat ₹507.40/kg |
| Four oils at 500 gm: British Rose, Citrus Lemon, Roasted Coffee, Lavender | 500 gm each | ₹7,523.00 | 2 kg of oil against 1.89 kg needed at 8% |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 500 wicks | ₹2,950.00 | Two and a half months of cover |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 12 × Pack of 10 | ₹11,328.00 | 120 jars |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | 8 × Pack of 10 | ₹2,548.80 | 80 votives |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 5 × 40 | ₹500.00 | 200 stickers |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | Pack of 1000 (1.5 inch) | ₹699.00 | ₹0.70 each |
| Isopropyl Alcohol Spray | 1 Litre | ₹520.00 | Jar cleaning before fill |
| Materials subtotal | ₹38,753.80 | ||
| Second Mini Electric Wax Melter | 1 litre | ₹2,360.00 | Two scents melting at once |
| Steel Wick Holder | Pack of 10 | ₹500.00 | Ten jars setting in a row |
| Wick Setting Tool | 1 | ₹399.00 | Presses the tab flat and centred |
| Candle Wax Pouring Jug | 1 | ₹531.00 | Second vessel so you never wait |
| CSI Pro Mixer | 1 | ₹349.00 | Consistent two-minute fragrance stir |
| Silicon Measuring Beaker 250 ML | 1 | ₹600.00 | Weighing oil away from the wax |
| Tools subtotal | ₹4,739.00 | ||
| Level 3, month one | ₹43,492.80 | From month two: about ₹38,753.80 |
The 70 g votive at this level costs ₹93.62 in materials and the 150 g jar ₹217.14. That is the whole argument for two sizes: the votive is less than half the material cost and sells as a gift or a sampler, while the jar carries the brand. Note that the extra 80 g of wax in the bigger candle is only ₹40.59, while the bigger vessel adds ₹62.54 — again, the glass is doing the talking.
Level 4 · Production: where the published price list runs out
At about 600 × 150 g candles a month you are pouring 90 kg of wax and buying 100 kg against the wastage assumption. Two things change. First, equipment stops being convenience and becomes throughput: the imported Electric Wax Melter is ₹21,240.00 for the 10 kg capacity and ₹25,960.00 for 20 kg, and a Wax Pouring Funnel is ₹1,888.00. Second, the store’s published pack ladder ends: CSI 464 is sold in 500 g, 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg variants, so 100 kg is ten 10 kg packs at the listed price. For more than 10 kg in one consignment, pricing is agreed on WhatsApp and is not published on the site — this page will not invent a rate for it.
| Line | Pack bought | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 10 × 10 kg | ₹50,740.00 |
| Four oils at 1 kg × 2: British Rose, Citrus Lemon, Roasted Coffee, Lavender | 8 kg total | ₹29,718.00 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 60 × Pack of 10 | ₹56,640.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | 1000 wicks | ₹5,900.00 |
| Candle Wick Stickers | 15 × 40 | ₹1,500.00 |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll | Pack of 1000 | ₹699.00 |
| Isopropyl Alcohol Spray | 1 Litre | ₹520.00 |
| Materials, one month | ₹1,45,717.00 | |
| Electric Wax Melter (Imported) | 10 kgs capacity | ₹21,240.00 |
| Wax Pouring Funnel | 4 nozzles | ₹1,888.00 |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks | Pack of 100 | ₹1,888.00 |
| Steel Wick Holder | Pack of 25 | ₹1,250.00 |
| Steel Pouring Pitcher | Large, 600 ML | ₹708.00 |
| Tools, bought once | ₹26,974.00 | |
| Level 4, month one | ₹1,72,691.00 |
The number that matters here is not ₹1,72,691.00. It is that ₹1,45,717.00 of materials buys a month of about 600 candles, each of which actually consumes ₹215.73 — the difference is the wax and oil you deliberately hold as cover — and that the glass alone is ₹56,640.00 of the month. A production month is a working-capital cycle: money goes out on the first, candles cure for two to three weeks, and money comes back when the stock sells. If your sales cycle is longer than a month you need two cycles funded, not one — that, not the equipment, is what breaks brands at this level.
The costs CSI cannot price for you
CSI sells wax, fragrance oil, wicks, vessels, dyes, finishing consumables, tools and kits. It does not sell outer cartons, mailers, bubble wrap, printed labels, ribbon, shrink film, courier services, electricity, rent, photography or advertising, and it does not publish rates for any of them. So this guide will not put a number in those rows, not even a “typical” one. Copy the worksheet below, fill in your own figures from your own quotes, and add it to the CSI total for your level.
| Line | Priced by CSI? | Your figure (per month) |
|---|---|---|
| Wax, fragrance, wicks, vessels, stickers | Yes — see the level tables | ₹12,995.20 / ₹38,753.80 / ₹1,45,717.00 |
| Tools and equipment | Yes — see the level tables | ₹3,422.00 / ₹4,739.00 / ₹26,974.00 |
| Outer cartons and mailers | No — CSI does not sell them | your figure |
| Printed labels, stickers with your brand on them | No | your figure |
| Ribbon, shrink film, tissue, gift boxes | No | your figure |
| Courier or freight, inbound and outbound | No — quotes on WhatsApp, nothing published | your figure |
| Your hours, or anyone you pay | No | your figure |
| Electricity, gas, rent, storage | No | your figure |
| Photography, ads, influencer seeding, market stalls | No | your figure |
| Payment gateway or marketplace commission | No | your figure |
| Breakages in transit and returns | No — depends on your packing and route | your figure |
| Month total | CSI materials + your figures |
Two real CSI reviews in the strip at the top of this page raise delivery charges — one says shipment charges were too high, another that high delivery charges restrict how much they buy. That is a fair thing for a supplier’s own page to repeat, and it is exactly why freight is a blank row here: it depends on your pincode, your order weight and how often you order. The practical lever is order frequency. Buying 25 kg once beats buying 5 kg five times, not because the wax is cheaper — it is not — but because you pay for one consignment instead of five.
Why buying bigger barely lowers your cost per candle
There is a persistent belief that scaling fixes margins because bulk is cheaper. On CSI’s published prices that is mostly false, and it is worth saying plainly on the supplier’s own blog. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg — identical. The 500 g pack is ₹520.00/kg, slightly dearer, which is the only step in the ladder. Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹399.00/kg at 1 kg and ₹399.20/kg at 5 kg. Where a real per-kilo step does exist it is small: Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 goes from ₹650.00/kg to ₹637.00/kg at 5 kg and above, a saving of ₹13.00 a kilo.
| Level | Oil pack rate used | Wax | Oil, 12 g | Wick | Jar | Sticker | Materials per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 equivalent | 100 gm pack | ₹76.11 | ₹41.06 | ₹5.90 | ₹94.40 | ₹2.50 | ₹219.97 |
| Level 2 and 3 | 500 gm pack | ₹76.11 | ₹38.23 | ₹5.90 | ₹94.40 | ₹2.50 | ₹217.14 |
| Level 4 | 1 kg pack | ₹76.11 | ₹36.82 | ₹5.90 | ₹94.40 | ₹2.50 | ₹215.73 |
From a 50-candle month to a 600-candle month — a twelve-fold increase — the CSI material cost of one candle falls by ₹1.42. That is the entire bulk dividend on published prices, because the wax rate is flat, the jar rate is flat and only the oil pack moves. Across 600 candles it is ₹849.60 a month, which is real but will not rescue a badly priced product.
What scale does buy is on the other side of the worksheet: fewer consignments and therefore less freight, fewer hours per candle because you are pouring twenty jars in the time you used to pour five, and a melter that holds temperature so fewer batches are rejected. Those are your costs, not CSI’s, and they are where the money at Level 3 and Level 4 is genuinely found. Ask for bulk pricing above 10 kg on WhatsApp, but do not build a business plan on a discount nobody has quoted you.
How to move up a level without wasting the last one
The commonest way to lose money in this trade is not overspending — it is spending at Level 3 while still selling at Level 1. Every basket above is designed so that the level below it is not wasted: the wax grade, the wick and the vessel stay the same, so the formula you test at Level 1 is still valid at Level 4, and only the pack sizes change. Move in this order.
One date to plan against: Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. Soy candles want a 14 to 21 day cure, and stock has to reach the customer before the festival, so a festive range should be poured by about mid-October. Working backwards, a Level 2 maker buying a festive month needs the ₹12,995.20 of materials in hand by the first week of October. In an Indian September that also means planning for heat: wax and oil stored in a 40°C Delhi or Ahmedabad room behave differently from the same stock in a Bengaluru flat, and the CSI 464 page asks for cool, dry storage away from sunlight and moisture.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and every product priced on this page is sold by CSI — so the page has to survive a reader checking it line by line. That is why it says the glass is about 43% of a 150 g candle’s material cost and the wax only about 35%, why it shows that twelve times the volume moves the cost per candle by ₹1.42, and why it tells you a kit at ₹555.78 may be a better first purchase than the ₹1,976.20 basket.
Every price comes from live CSI stock on 11 September 2026, September 2026 pricing, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. The 5% wastage figure and the candle counts per level are stated assumptions for planning, not measured data. Outer packaging, labels, freight, labour, electricity, rent, marketing and payment fees are left as blank rows because CSI neither sells them nor publishes rates for them; no retail price or margin is proposed here. Bulk rates above the published pack sizes are not published — they are quoted on WhatsApp.
