How do I check an oil is candle-safe? Five gates in order: read the page, ask for documentation, watch one melt, watch the surface for 72 hours, burn a cured jar at day 14. Each gate has a stop rule, and a stop at gate three costs you one melt instead of a production run.

What should I ask the supplier for? The SDS, the IFRA documentation, and confirmation of the stated applications for that specific product. CSI supplies documentation on request on WhatsApp — only 2 of our 107 oil pages even mention an SDS, which is exactly why asking is a step and not an afterthought.

Can the page alone settle it? No. A page can tell you what an oil is intended for and what it contains. Only a cured burn in your jar, on your wick, at your load can tell you how it behaves.

What does skipping it cost? A 500-candle run in Chunks and a mid-priced oil is ₹1,10,129.80 of wax and oil. The check is 0.42% of that.
The short answer

How do you actually check whether a fragrance oil is candle-safe?
You run five gates in order, cheapest first, and you stop at the first failure. Gate 1, the page: eight fields — stated applications, candle load, cure, flash point, vanillin or discolouration, notes, IFRA wording, wick guidance. Four minutes, free, and the useful output is a list of what is missing. Gate 2, the request: one message asking for the SDS and the IFRA documentation for that named product. CSI supplies documentation on request via WhatsApp; note that only 2 of CSI's 107 oil pages mention an SDS at all and no page anywhere publishes an IFRA certificate number, amendment or category, which is precisely why this is a request rather than a read. Gate 3, the melt: 100 g of your wax at the page's stated add temperature, your load weighed in, stirred the stated two minutes — and then you look through it against the light. Gate 4, the surface: one poured jar, wiped at 24 hours and again at 72. Gate 5, the burn: a cured jar at day 14, timed to a full melt pool, scored for throw, soot and mushrooming, with a second jar the next day. Fifteen days from the page to the verdict, ₹463.93 of materials consumed on four 70 g jars — against ₹1,10,129.80 of wax and oil in the 500-candle run it protects. What you may not do is skip to the end: a listing that says the right things, a document in your folder and a jar that tunnels are all perfectly compatible with each other, which is why the gates exist in that order.
One line: read, ask, melt, wipe, burn — in that order, with a stop rule at each, and the whole thing costs less than half a percent of the run it protects.

Five gates and five stop rules

A check is not an opinion you form. It is a sequence you finish — and the discipline is in the stop rules, not the enthusiasm.

Most makers do this backwards: buy 500 g, pour a hundred candles, then start reading. Each gate below is far cheaper than the one after it, and the stop rule matters as much as the step — a gate you never fail is a gate you are not really running.

Gate 2 deserves a word, because makers hesitate over it. Asking a supplier for documentation is routine — the same conversation as asking for a GST invoice. And an honest "no document exists for that product" is useful: it tells you the oil has to be carried entirely on gates 3 to 5, and you can decide whether that is acceptable for a line you sell.

The mistake: running gate 5 first because you are excited. Pouring twenty jars of a brand-new oil before you have read the load figure is how a maker ends up with twenty jars at a percentage the oil's own page does not support. The order is not bureaucracy — it is economics. A gate-1 stop costs four minutes. A gate-3 stop costs one melt — ₹124.71 if you ran it standalone. A gate-5 stop costs four jars and a fortnight. A no-gate stop costs a production run and a customer's opinion of you.

Gate 1: eight fields, and what a blank means

Read the listing with a pen. You are not looking for reassurance — you are building a list of what nobody has told you yet. Here is the field set with the action for each blank, because a blank is not a defect in the oil: it is a task on your card.

Two entries in that table are worth pausing on. "Flash point: nothing stated on 56 pages" is the commonest single gap in the range, and it is not a safety scandal — it is a missing line on a listing, and the figure exists on the Safety Data Sheet. And the IFRA row shows why this post has a gate 2 at all: 71 pages mention IFRA and not one publishes a certificate number, an amendment number, a category or a date. A phrase is a phrase. The document is the thing you can send to a stockist, and it arrives by request — see what an IFRA certificate actually is.

Two things on a page that should slow you down
First, a page that states no flash point but promises "high flashpoint" in marketing copy: that is an adjective, not a figure, and the adjective is not checkable. Second, a page whose two statements disagree — the CSI range contains an example, where one oil's copy calls its 203°C the highest in the range while another CSI page states 206°C. When a listing contradicts itself or another listing, use the specific measured figure, ignore the superlative, and ask us to confirm. Writing "page says X, confirmed by SDS on date" on your card takes five seconds and settles the question permanently.

Gate 2: the message, word for word

This gate fails most often because the question is too vague. "Is this candle-safe?" invites a yes. Ask instead for named documents about a named product, and what comes back is either a file or a clear no — both of which you can act on.

One message covers all four. Something like: "Please send the SDS and any IFRA documentation for Sage and Cedarwood Fragrance Oil, 100 g. The listing does not mention IFRA — could you confirm what documentation you hold for it, and confirm the stated applications? I also need a GST invoice." That is the whole gate. "The listing uses the word certified, so I have documentation." You have a sentence on a web page. Nobody can produce it on request, attach it to a wholesale enquiry or date it — and across all 107 CSI oil pages, not one publishes a certificate number, amendment number, category or assessment date. Treat the phrase as a prompt to request the document, put the file in a folder named after the product, and write the date you received it on your card. That is the difference between a claim you repeat and a record you hold — see why makers check IFRA documentation.

Gates 3–5: the fifteen-day bench run

Four jars, one oil, one wax, one wick, one load. The jars are small on purpose — a 70 g votive costs ₹31.86 and tells you the same things a 200 g jar does about dissolution, surface and pool formation. Here is the run, day by day.

This is the colour check the vanillin line was pointing at, and it is the reason the fourth jar exists. The Chunks page states a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks; this series judges at 14 days.

Day 14 and 15: gate 5, two burns and a verdictBurn one jar for three hours: time to a full melt pool, hot throw at 30 and 120 minutes, soot on the glass, mushrooming on the wick, and the surface once it has set again. Repeat with the second jar the next day to confirm it was not a one-jar fluke. Then write the verdict for this product — this oil, this wax, this load, this jar, this wick — and date it.

Note what the run does not include: a judgement on day two. A jar at 48 hours can be lit safely and tells you almost nothing about what a customer will experience, which is a distinction worth keeping straight — burning a candle 24 hours after making it covers the difference.

The CSI principle
Gates 1 and 2 are somebody else's information. Gates 3, 4 and 5 are your evidence. A launch decision needs both, and only one of them can be bought.

Put plainly: the complete check costs less than half a percent of the materials in the run it stands in front of, and less than one 200 g candle's worth of wax and oil per test jar. The file you keep afterwards

The check has a second output that most makers throw away: the paperwork that lets you answer a question a year later, in under a minute.

One folder per oil, named after the product exactly as the listing names it. Inside: the eight gate-1 fields copied verbatim with the date you read them; whatever gate 2 returned, or a note saying what did not exist; the clarity result; the two wipe results; the day-14 and day-15 burn sheets; and one photograph of the cured jar beside an unscented pour. That is perhaps fifteen minutes of writing spread over the fifteen days.

It earns its keep three ways. A stockist asks what documentation you hold — you send the file instead of promising to look. A batch behaves differently six months on — you compare readings against the old sheet instead of arguing from memory. You reorder after a year — the load, wick and pour reading are on the card. None of it needs software; it needs the check to have produced a record rather than a feeling.

Three listings, three different gaps

Chosen to show what gate 1 looks like when it goes well and when it leaves you work. Per-candle figures use a 200 g candle at 8%: 184 g of wax plus 16 g of oil.

The page states "Flash Point: 270°F", "Vanillin Content: 0%", "Phthalate-Free: Yes", a pyramid of "Top: Lemon, Lemongrass- Middle: Citronella, Green Herb- Base: Wood", applications across candles, diffusers and personal care, and "Follow IFRA guidelines for skin safety". What it does not state is a candle load percentage — so on this oil your load comes from the wax page alone, which means starting conservatively and confirming at gate 3 and gate 5. Note also that its flash point is published in Fahrenheit while most of the range uses Celsius; record the units you were given rather than converting and quoting a figure the page never wrote.

The page states "Candle usage rate 6-10% of total wax weight" and "Wax melt usage rate 10-15%", applications "Suitable for candles, wax melts, reed diffusers, room sprays, and body products" with best uses for "summer and beach-inspired seasonal candle collections", and an instruction that belongs on more listings than it appears on: "Test with your specific blend before full production runs." No flash point, no vanillin statement and no note pyramid are published, so gate 2 asks for the SDS figure and gates 4 and 5 carry the colour and burn questions. At ₹500 per 100 g it is also the least expensive of these three to run a check on.

The listing has no flash point. Is the oil unsafe?
No — it is undocumented on that listing, which is a different thing. 56 of CSI's 107 oil pages state no flash point, and another 32 carry only the template line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold for alcohol-based products and not a measured value for that oil. Ask for the SDS figure if you need it for your records, and do not estimate one or borrow one from a similar scent.
Is an IFRA claim on a product page enough?
It is a starting point, not a record. Across all 107 CSI oil pages, 71 mention IFRA and none publishes a certificate number, amendment number, category or date. So the phrase tells you use-level standards exist for the material; it does not put a document in your folder, and it says nothing at all about how the oil will throw. Request the documentation, file it under the product name, and note the date you received it.
How many jars do I need for a proper check?
Four 70 g jars covers it: one for the 24-hour and 72-hour wipes, one kept in daylight for the colour comparison, and two burned on consecutive days so a single odd jar cannot decide the verdict. That is 280 g of finished candle — 257.6 g of wax and 22.4 g of oil — and ₹463.93 of consumed materials. Scale up only when you change the vessel, because pool behaviour is specific to a diameter.
Can I shorten the 14-day wait if I need to launch?
You can burn at day 2 and you will learn something — mainly whether the wick lights and the pool starts. What you will not learn is how the candle presents to a customer, because that changes across the first fortnight. The Chunks page itself states "a minimum of 48 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks) before performing burn tests", and this series judges soy containers at 14–21 days. If the calendar is tight, pour the check jars first and the production batch second, rather than cutting the cure on both.

Sage and Cedarwood from ₹354 for 50 g, stating 190°C, both wax loads, a cure and 0% vanillin — and no IFRA mention, so gate 2 has a question to ask. Citronella from ₹141.60 for 15 g, stating 270°F and 0% vanillin but no candle load. Mango Coconut from ₹93.22, stating a 6–10% candle rate and "Test with your specific blend before full production runs".
