Quick answers — read this first
What is a flash point? The lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with the air above it, measured under a specified test method. It is a handling, storage and transport classification for the liquid in its bottle.

Is it the temperature at which fragrance burns off? No — there is no such specification. A flash point says nothing about how much fragrance evaporates during a pour; the two ideas are separated in can fragrance oil burn off in hot wax.

Does a higher flash point mean a better oil? No. It is not a quality score and it does not predict throw. Two oils with identical flash points can perform completely differently in the same wax, and the highest figure CSI publishes, 206°C, belongs to a smoky vetiver rather than to a bestseller.

What if my oil's page doesn't state one? That is the common case — 56 of 107 pages state nothing. The correct thing to say is that the figure is not published. Ask CSI for the SDS figure on WhatsApp, work to the temperature band your wax page states, and burn test.
The short answer
One definition, no shortcuts: the lowest temperature at which a liquid produces enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture in air, under defined test conditions. It classifies the liquid for handling. It is not a property of your candle.
Three things it is not: not a burn-off temperature, not a hot-throw predictor, not a grade. A quality judgement built on a flash point is a judgement built on the wrong number — see how to tell if an oil is good quality.
Read what is actually printed: a measured value (18 CSI pages), a threshold line reading ">93°C" (32 pages), "available on request / SDS" (1 page), or silence (56 pages). Those are four different statements and only the first is a measurement.

About one page in six carries a number you can quote. The single largest group carries nothing. Any rule that depends on knowing your oil's flash point therefore fails for most of the range — which is why the working instruction has to come from somewhere else.
Straight answer
What does flash point mean on a candle fragrance oil listing?
It means the lowest temperature at which that liquid gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with the air above it, measured under specified test conditions. Nothing more. It is a classification figure: it exists so that a liquid can be handled, stored and transported sensibly, and so that anyone working with it knows roughly where its vapour becomes significant. It is a property of the neat oil in a container, not of a fragranced candle, and it tells you nothing about scent strength, cold throw, hot throw, longevity or value for money. On CSI's range the published picture is uneven and worth knowing before you quote anything: 18 of 107 pages state a measured figure, from Neroli at "Flashpoint: 85°C" to Vetiver at "Flashpoint 206°C"; 32 pages carry only the template line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold statement about alcohol-based formats and not a measurement; one page, Zesty Lemon, says the figure is available on request or from the SDS; and 56 pages say nothing. So for roughly five oils in six you do not have a number, and the honest response is to say so, ask CSI for the SDS figure on WhatsApp, work to the add-temperature band printed on your wax page, and settle the question the only way it can be settled — by burn testing.
One line: a flash point is a handling number for the bottle, published on about one CSI page in six — useful, narrow, and no substitute for your wax page's stated temperatures or your own test.

What a flash point actually is

One sentence, and every word in it is doing work. Drop a word and you get one of the misreadings in the next section.

The standard definition is this: the flash point of a liquid is the lowest temperature at which it gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with the air immediately above its surface, under specified test conditions. Read it slowly. It is about vapour above a liquid surface, not the liquid catching fire. It is about a mixture with air, so concentration matters, not just temperature. And it is about a test — a defined apparatus, heating rate and way of introducing a small ignition source to see whether the vapour flashes. Unpacking those clauses is what stops the specification being misused.

"ignitable mixture with air" An ignition source is part of the picture. The test introduces one deliberately. Not self-ignition. The temperature at which a liquid ignites without any external source is a different and much higher figure.
"under specified test conditions" The number belongs to a method. Closed and open arrangements give different results for the same liquid, so one oil can legitimately be reported as two figures. Not a constant you can compare across suppliers blind. Two "185°C" oils may not be strictly comparable.

That last row matters most and product pages never mention it. A flash point is a method-dependent measurement, and none of the 51 CSI pages that state anything about flash point names the method used. That is not a scandal; it is a limit on how far a comparison can be pushed. If one oil says 190°C and another 192°C, you have not found a difference — you have found two numbers with an unknown margin between them.

The mistake: treating the figure as a candle specification. A flash point is measured on the neat oil. Your candle is 8% to 13% oil dissolved in a wax matrix — a completely different physical system with a completely different vapour behaviour at the surface. Nothing about the neat-oil figure transfers arithmetically to a finished, cured candle. So when you see a flash point on a listing, file it where it belongs: with handling and shipping information about the bottle, alongside solubility. Where it genuinely changes what you do at the bench is a narrower question, handled in does flash point determine the add temperature.

The three things a flash point is not

Each of these three claims is repeated confidently in candle-making circles, and each is a different kind of error.

There is no published specification called a burn-off temperature, and evaporation of light materials happens well below any flash point, continuously, at every temperature. "A higher flash point means a stronger candle" Mistakes one physical property for a performance outcome. Heavier, less volatile materials do tend to push a flash point up and tend to survive a warm melt pool — but the correlation is loose, and plenty of high-flash-point oils are quiet in wax. "Low flash point equals cheap oil" Confuses composition with grade. Bright citrus and fresh aromatic directions are built from lighter materials by design; that is what makes them smell bright. Neroli states the lowest figure in CSI's range at 85°C and is one of the dearer oils on the site at ₹665.52 per 100 g. Materials used, concentration, and whether the blend does its job in your wax. The Neroli row breaks the intuition cleanly. If a low flash point meant a cheap oil, the cheapest oils would cluster at the bottom of the table. They do not: Neroli states "Flashpoint: 85°C" — the lowest measured figure CSI publishes — and its 100 g bottle at ₹665.52 is dearer per gram than Sandalwood at ₹502.68, which states 203°C. What the low figure does tell you is that the blend carries plenty of light, volatile material — exactly what you would expect from a citrus-floral built on bitter-orange blossom, and worth knowing when you plan the pour, not when you judge the bottle.

If you want one sentence to take to your supplier
Ask "what is the flash point and by which method?", and treat any answer without a method as approximate. Then ask the question that actually decides your process: "what add temperature do you recommend for this oil in soy wax?" One is a specification. The other is an instruction. Suppliers who publish both are doing you a favour, and CSI's Gardenia page is the example in the range that does it explicitly.

Here is the whole measured set, exactly as the pages word it — eighteen listings out of 107. Two are given in Fahrenheit only and two as an approximate range; the wording is reproduced rather than tidied, because the wording is part of the information. Where a page adds a working instruction alongside the figure, it is in the last column, and those instructions are worth more than the number itself.

Read from the table above: three of the eighteen measured values sit below 100°C (85°C, 93°C, 98°C) and thirteen sit at or above 143°C. Ordering the eighteen figures and taking the middle pair puts the centre of the set at about 192°C. The 270°F entries are the store's own wording; Cinnamon Vanilla's page converts it for you as 132°C, and the arithmetic is (270 − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 = 132.2°C. Two patterns are worth naming. The oils at the bottom of the table are the bright ones — a citrus-floral, a resinous wood with citrus lift, a creamy white floral — while the top is woods, vanillas and heavy florals. That is composition showing through. And the pages that publish a flash point are disproportionately the ones that publish everything else too: load by wax type, vanillin content, cure time, wick suggestions. A stated flash point is a decent proxy for how completely a listing is documented — a far more useful inference than any judgement about performance.

Never fill a blank from a neighbour. The commonest error in makers' own spec sheets is copying a figure from a similar scent — Sandalwood's 203°C for a different wood, Jasmine's 185°C for a different white floral. Two oils that smell alike can be built from entirely different materials, and 56 of 107 pages state nothing precisely because nothing has been published. Write "not published — request SDS" and leave it until CSI sends the figure on WhatsApp. A spec sheet with an honest gap is usable; one with a borrowed number is worse than none.

The ">93°C" line, read properly

Thirty-two pages carry it. It is the single most common flash-point statement in the range, and it is not a flash point.

The line reads, in its main form, "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)". Minor variants exist across the pages — "> 93°C (safe for alcohol-based applications)", "Flash Point>93°C - suitable for alcohol-based products" — but the structure is identical and so is the meaning. It is a threshold statement: it asserts that the figure lies above a particular value, and it tells you why that matters for one specific family of formats, namely alcohol-based ones such as fine fragrance, eau de parfum and body sprays.

Why does it appear at all? Because it is the statement a perfume-grade concentrate is normally sold with. These 32 pages are CSI's fine fragrance listings — the designer- and retailer-inspired directions — and their spec blocks are written for formulators blending into alcohol, where the finished product's flash point is the operative figure. The usage table beside it has the same audience: "Perfume / Extrait de Parfum 25%", "Eau de Parfum / Eau de Toilette 20%", and lower down, "Candles (Soy / Paraffin / Blends) 10%".

The practical upshot is smaller than it looks. If you work to an add band in the 80–90°C region — which is what CSI's soy wax pages state — then "above 93°C" already says the oil's figure sits above your working range. It does not say by how much, and it does not license "93°C" in a spec sheet. Treat it as a category marker for perfume-grade stock and ask for the SDS figure if you need a real one — for a documented production run, you will.

Why the "alcohol-based" parenthesis is there
In an alcohol-based product the solvent itself is highly volatile, so the flash point of the finished formulation is dominated by the alcohol and the fragrance concentrate's own figure matters mainly as a check that it is not the limiting factor. A candle is the opposite case: the fragrance is dissolved in a wax that is solid at room temperature, and there is no volatile solvent at all. That is why a spec line written for perfumers reads oddly on a page a candle maker is shopping from — and why the candle-focused CSI listings tend to state a measured figure and a load band instead. Reading a figure without over-reading it

Once you have a number there are still ways to misuse it. These five habits prevent all of them, and every one can be demonstrated in CSI's own page text.

Check the unit before you compare anythingTwo CSI pages quote Fahrenheit: Citronella states "Flash Point: 270°F" and nothing else, and Cinnamon Vanilla states "Flashpoint 270°F (132°C)". Convert once and record both units. (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9 makes 270°F 132.2°C — fourth from the bottom of the eighteen, not near the top where "270" looks like it belongs.

Take a range as a rangeDark Vanilla and Roasted Coffee both state "Flashpoint ~191-193°C". That tilde and that range are doing honest work. Record it as stated. If a customer, an insurer or a courier ever asks you for a single figure, that is the moment to request the SDS rather than to pick the middle of somebody's approximation.

Ignore superlatives, including the supplier's ownThe Sandalwood page describes its stated 203°C as the highest flash point in the CSI range. The store's own pages contradict that: Vetiver states 206°C and Vanilla Bean states the same 203°C. We are pointing at our own page here on purpose. Buy on the figure for the specific product, never on a ranking claim.

Do not read two close figures as different190°C, 192°C and 193°C appear on four pages. With no method published and no tolerance stated, those are the same answer. Treat differences under about 10°C as noise, and spend the attention on the load band and the vanillin line instead — those two will change your candle.

Write the provenance next to the numberRecord the figure, the unit, the date and the source: "192°C · product page · Sept 2026", or "not published · SDS requested 12 Sept". A year later you will not remember which numbers you were told and which you assumed, and that distinction is the whole value of keeping records. The CSI principle
A specification is only as strong as the sentence it came in. Quote the sentence, not your summary of it.
"Flashpoint 192°C" and "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" look like the same kind of statement in a spreadsheet cell and are not the same kind of statement at all. One is a measurement of a specific oil; the other is a threshold written for a different product category. Keeping the wording keeps the difference.

What to do with the number — and what to do without it

The specification is narrow. That does not make it worthless. Here is the short list of decisions a flash point genuinely informs, the longer list of decisions it does not, and what to use instead.

Notice how much of the right-hand column reduces to two answers: read what the page states, and test. That is the structure of the problem, not evasion. A flash point is a measurement someone else made on a liquid in a cup. A candle is a system you assembled, and the only instrument that reports on the system is the system, burning, after a proper cure.

Three oils whose pages publish a measured figure

If you want oils you can document properly, these three are among the most fully specified listings in the range: a measured flash point, a stated candle load, a vanillin position and a cure window, all on the page. Per-candle figures use the series convention — a 200 g candle at 8% is 184 g of wax plus 16 g of oil.

Stated load up to 10% for soy with a 48 to 72 hour cure, up to 6% for paraffin, 0% vanillin. Profile stated as "Sweet, floral, and exotic jasmine" with a subtle musk undertone. The page also carries an unsupported superlative about technical reliability, which we are not repeating.

Do not shortlist on the flash-point column. If you sort the eighteen oils above by flash point and buy from the top, you will end up with a range of woods, vanillas and heavy florals and no bright openings at all — because brightness comes from lighter, more volatile materials, which is precisely what lowers a flash point. That is a note-structure decision being made by the wrong specification. What does flash point mean in fragrance oil?
It is the lowest temperature at which the liquid gives off enough vapour to form an ignitable mixture with air, under specified test conditions, and it classifies liquids for handling, storage and transport. It is measured on the neat oil, so it describes the bottle rather than your candle and says nothing about scent strength, throw or quality. Across CSI's range the published values run from 85°C to 206°C on the 18 pages that state one.
Does fragrance oil burn off above its flash point?
No — that is a different idea wearing this specification's clothes. A flash point concerns vapour above a liquid forming an ignitable mixture with an ignition source present. Evaporation of the lightest materials happens continuously far below any flash point, and is what people usually mean by "burn off". No published specification is called a burn-off temperature. The two are separated properly in can fragrance oil burn off in hot wax.
Is a higher flash point better for candle making?
Not in any sense that affects your candle. A higher figure means comfortable handling margins, which is convenient, and often indicates heavier, less volatile materials — but it is not a quality score and not a throw predictor. CSI's lowest published figure, 85°C on Neroli, belongs to one of the dearer oils in the range at ₹665.52 per 100 g, while British Rose at 192°C is ₹342.20. Judge oils on stated notes, stated load, reviews and your own burn test.
What does "flash point above 93°C" mean on a product page?
It is a threshold, not a measurement, and it appears on 32 CSI pages in the form "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)". It tells you the figure lies above 93°C and that the oil is being offered for alcohol-based formats such as eau de parfum, where the finished product's flash point is the operative one. You may record "above 93°C, exact figure not published". You may not record "93°C". For a real value on one of those oils, request the SDS figure on WhatsApp.
Why do some fragrance oil pages not list a flash point?
Because the figure has not been published for that listing — which is the majority case: 56 of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages state nothing about flash point, and one, Zesty Lemon, explicitly says it is available on request or from the SDS. A blank is not a hidden problem and it is not permission to estimate. Write "not published" in your records, ask CSI for the SDS figure, and in the meantime work to the add-temperature band your wax page states.
Which CSI fragrance oil has the highest flash point?
Of the values published, the highest is "Flashpoint 206°C" on Vetiver Fragrance Oil, with Sandalwood and Vanilla Bean both at 203°C. Two caveats matter. The Sandalwood page describes its 203°C as the range's highest, which its own neighbours contradict — ignore the claim and use the figures. And because 56 pages publish nothing, the true maximum across the whole range is simply unknown. A ranking built on partial data is not a ranking.
