How to Choose a Wick After Changing Fragrance Oil
Share
What is the procedure? Pour four candles from one melt: the old oil on your current wick as a reference, and the new oil on one wick size down, your current size and one size up. Same wax, jar, load and pour day. Log the melt pool hourly on a cured candle.
What should I record? Pool width at hours 1 to 4, depth at hour 3, flame (small, steady or tall), any carbon ball or soot, and the candle's age. Those five facts decide the wick.
What does it cost? In the worked example below, ₹589.00: 50 g of the new oil plus a pack each of the two wick sizes you do not already use. Verdict on day 14.

Before you re-wick: is it the oil, or did something else change?
When makers change oil, they often change something else in the same week: a new bag of wax, a different jar from a new supplier, a higher load "because the new scent is lighter", a hotter room in April. If the first candle in the new oil misbehaves, it is tempting to blame the oil and reach for a bigger wick. Before you run the procedure below, check that the oil really is the only thing that changed. If it is not, you are about to wick for the wrong cause.
| Variable | How it sneaks in with an oil change | What to do before the bracket |
|---|---|---|
| Load | "The new oil smells lighter, so I went from 8% to 10%" | Pour the new oil at the old load first. Load and wick together are a different test (see Does Increasing Fragrance Load Mean I Need a Bigger Wick?). |
| Wax | A new batch, a new grade, or a switch from CSI 464 to CSI 468 | Use the same wax for R and all X candles. A new wax needs its own bracket. |
| Jar | Same fill weight, different inside diameter | Measure the inside diameter; if it changed, R is no longer a valid reference. |
| Temperature | A different add or pour temperature for the "delicate" new oil | Follow your wax page and log it. CSI 464's page gives a pour temperature of 80°C–90°C; CSI 468's gives 58°C–60°C. |
| Age at test | The old oil was judged at day 14, the new at day 2 | Pour R fresh beside the X candles so they are the same age. |
The reference candle R is the check that makes this honest. It is your old oil, on your current wick, poured the same day from the same melt. If R burns as it always has, the jar, wax and process are unchanged and anything odd in X2 belongs to the oil. If R misbehaves too, the problem arrived with something else, and the oil is not the suspect. That is the whole diagnostic logic of a re-wick in one candle.
Reading the two oil pages side by side
You cannot read a wick size off a product page, but you can read which direction to expect. Put the old and new oil pages next to each other and compare four things. None of them is a measurement of how an oil burns; each is a stated fact that tends to go with a wick change. Why oil changes the fuel a wick draws is explained in the cluster hub, Can Fragrance Oil Make a Candle Wick Too Weak?; what makes an oil "heavy" is in Do Heavy Fragrance Oils Need a Larger Candle Wick?.
| Page signal | Citrus Lemon (old) | Dark Vanilla (new) | What it suggests for the bracket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stated candle load | "candles (6-10%)" | "candles (6-10%)" | Same range, so pour both at the same load (8% here). A different range is a reason to check load before wick. |
| Stated notes | Lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, "a tangy mandarin finish"; no base named | Vanilla, spice, "deep caramel and cream", "dark amber and warm musk" | Light and top-led to dense and sweet: in our judgement the most likely direction is up a size. Test, do not assume. |
| Vanillin | not stated in the page text we hold | "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax" | Not a wick signal as such, but in our judgement vanilla-rich oils are among the ones makers most often re-wick; also a colour flag. |
| Cure line | "Cure soy wax candles for 48-72 hours before burn testing" | "at least 48-72 hours before burn testing" | Both pages ask for a cure before judging. Judge every bracket candle at the same age. |
A few oil pages carry wick advice of their own, and all of it points to testing. The Verbena page says "Test wick size based on container diameter"; the Cinnamon page says "Test wick size based on container dimensions and wax type"; the Vanilla Bean page says "Wick testing is recommended based on your container size and wax type". Seven oil pages in our captured page text carry a wick recommendation of some kind, and none of them gives a size. They cannot: your jar is not on their page.
Setting the bracket: which three wicks
The point of three wicks is not to find the winner at the first attempt. It is to trap it. If the size below drowns or tunnels and the size above runs tall or sooty, the winner is the middle, and you know it for a reason rather than a hunch. If two wicks pass, you take the smaller: it tends to burn cooler and cleaner, and it costs less. If none passes, the bracket has told you which direction to move next.
| Step | Wick | What the page says | Per wick | Bracket role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) | "natural fibers like cotton and paper"; no diameter chart | ₹5.90 (pack of 10) | Lower arm when you are on C2 |
| 2 | Eco Candle Wicks Thick (C2) | as above | ₹9.44 (pack of 10) | Middle arm when you are on C2; upper arm when on C1 |
| 3 | Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm" | ₹12.00 (pack of 10) | Upper arm when you are on C2 |
| separate family | Performance Wooden Wicks | "made from thin strips of wood", pack includes wick tabs | ₹59.00 (pack of 10) | Its own bracket only; no size range in the page text we hold |
Three common starting points
You are on C2 (the worked example): bracket C1, C2 and Cotton Braided. That is the three ready-made cotton container wicks in the ladder above, in one test. You are on C1 and moving to a denser oil: there is no Eco size below C1, so bracket upward: C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, and expect the braided to be the "too much" arm in a small jar. You are on C1 and moving to a lighter oil: pour C1 and C2 in the new oil and make the third candle a second C1 from a separate melt; with no smaller Eco size to test, a repeat of your current wick is the most useful third candle. If you pour on a wick roll or cut your own lengths, keep the length identical across the bracket so length is not a second variable.
The procedure, day by day
Worked example: a range that uses Citrus Lemon at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, in a jar you already wick with C2, adding Dark Vanilla. All candles are 150 g at 8%: 12 g of oil and 138 g of wax.
| Item | What you use | New spend | Value consumed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dark Vanilla 50 g (the new oil) | 48 g (X1, X2, X3, Y) | ₹410.00 | ₹393.60 |
| Citrus Lemon (the old oil, already owned) | 12 g (R) | already owned | ₹40.80 |
| Eco C1 pack of 10 + Cotton Braided pack of 10 | 1 C1, up to 2 braided | ₹59.00 + ₹120.00 | ₹48.78 (all five wicks, C2 included, worst case) |
| Your C2 wicks | up to 2 | already owned | |
| Wax, valued as CSI 464 at ₹0.51/g (10 kg price) | 690 g | already owned | ₹350.11 |
| Jars, valued as the 150 g clear jar at ₹94.40 each | 5 jars | already owned | ₹472.00 |
| Total | 5 candles | ₹589.00 | ₹1,305.29 (₹261.06 per candle) |
If you do not already own C2 wicks, add ₹94.40 (₹683.40 new spend). Add ₹118.00 for a pack of five centering devices if you have no holders. All figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. The jars and the new oil are the dearest lines; wash and reuse test jars, and buy 50 g of the oil rather than 500 g for a re-wick.
What to record, and how to measure it
The card in the diagram is the minimum. Here is what each line means, how to measure it with a ruler and a skewer, and why it earns its place. Record numbers, not adjectives: "3.5 cm" can be compared with next month's candle; "almost full" cannot.
| Field | How to measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Candle age at test | Days since pour, from the base label | Only same-age candles can be compared; oil pages that state a soy cure ask for 48–72 hours |
| Jar inside diameter | Ruler across the inside of the rim, once | The rules of thumb scale with width: roughly an hour of burning per 2.5 cm to reach the glass |
| Pool width, hours 1–4 | Ruler across the liquid, widest point | The main verdict: a pool at or near the glass by about hour 3–4 is the usual target |
| Pool depth, hour 3 | Dip a wooden skewer beside the wick, read the wet mark | About 0.5–1 cm is a common target; much deeper with a tall flame suggests too much wick |
| Flame | Small / steady / tall; flicker or smoke | Small and shrinking with a narrow pool: too little wick. Tall with smoke: too much |
| Carbon ball or soot | Look at the wick tip and the glass rim after the burn | A carbon ball often means the wick has more fuel than it burns cleanly; compare arms |
| Wick length before lighting | Ruler, after trimming | Keeps trim from becoming a hidden second variable |
| Room and air | Room, fan or AC on or off, window open or shut | A draught flattens flames and skews pools; keep it identical for every candle |
Reading the result: five outcomes
Read R first. It tells you whether the rest of the bench is trustworthy.
| Pattern at day 7 and 14 | What it means | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| R fine; X2 fine; X1 short; X3 too tall | The new oil needs no new wick in this jar | Keep your current wick; confirm with Y. The cheapest outcome. |
| R fine; X2 short or drowning; X3 fine | The new oil wants one size up | Adopt the upper arm; confirm with Y; burn to the end to check late-life flame. |
| R fine; X1 and X2 both fine | The new oil can take one size down | Adopt the smaller wick; it tends to burn cooler and costs less. |
| R fine; all three X short | The bracket sat too low for this jar and oil, or the load is too high for the jar | Check the load against both ceilings; then bracket one step higher, or ask on WhatsApp. |
| R misbehaves as well | Something other than the oil changed: wax, jar, trim, process, room | Stop. Find the other change before re-wicking anything. |
If one oil in your range keeps landing on a different wick from the rest, you are managing a range with more than one wick, which is its own question: Do Different Fragrance Oils Require Different Wick Sizes in the Same Jar? covers how often that happens and how to keep it straight; the deep case, a wick that works for one scent and tunnels in another, is My Candle Wick Works Perfectly With One Fragrance but Tunnels With Another — Do I Need Different Wicks for Every Scent?.
What to buy for the bracket
Three wick-side purchases that build the bracket and keep it fair, then the two oils in the worked example. The oils are chosen on stated basis: a stated candle load, stated notes, stated cure line, price per gram and stock on 25 September 2026. CSI has no measured burn or throw data for any oil. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8%.

We sell the 500 g and 1 kg of both oils. For a re-wick, buy 50 g of the new oil: it covers four candles at 8% with 2 g left, and you should not own a kilogram of an oil until you know which wick it burns on. Switching a line from Citrus Lemon to Dark Vanilla also changes the oil cost of each candle by ₹57.77 at the 1 kg price, before any change of wick.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, jars and oils named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you that a new oil often needs no new wick, and that the cheapest outcome of a bracket is keeping what you have. We would rather you proved that than bought a bigger wick on instinct.
Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026; every size in the pick tables was in stock on that date, and any that is not would be flagged as out of stock. Loads, notes, cure lines, vanillin wording and wick wording are quoted from product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.
The bracket design, the direction-of-change guidance, the outcome table and the choice of oils are editorial judgement; pool targets are commonly cited rules of thumb; CSI has no measured burn or throw data for any oil.
