CSI Troubleshooting · Cold Throw vs Hot Throw
A candle lit in the living room one evening tells you about that evening. Here is a hot-throw test you can repeat: one measured room, fixed check-ins, blind noses, a blank candle and a pass mark to meet before any bulk order.
₹636.27
materials for a full test of one candidate: two candles and a blank · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I test a fragrance oil's hot throw before buying in bulk? Make the test the same every time. Use a cured candle (day 14), a closed room of known size, fixed check-ins at hour 1 and hour 2, a blind panel walking in from outside, a distance-anchored 0 to 5 score, and one unscented blank candle to catch guessing.

What counts as a pass? Our judgement: an average of 3 or more (noticed a step inside the room) at both hour 1 and hour 2, on two separate candles, with the blank scoring 1 or less and a full pool by hour 3 to 4.

What does the test kit cost? For one candidate, the materials it uses come to about ₹636.27 with Apple Cinnamon. Starting with nothing, a 50 g oil, 500 g of CSI 464, a pack of 10 jars and a pack of 10 wicks come to ₹1,500.18.

When should I buy the kilogram? Only after both candles pass. Checking cost per candle, stability and stock depth before the kilogram is a separate gate, covered in its own post.
The short answer
The room: a closed room of about 9 to 15 m², measured and written down, fan and AC off, used for every test.
The schedule: light, leave, warm-up at 30 minutes, score at 1 hour and 2 hours, check the pool at 3 to 4 hours, air the room for 30 minutes.
The panel and score: two or three people, candles coded on the base, scored by where each person first notices the scent walking in (0 = not even at the jar, 5 = outside the door).
The kit: two candles of the candidate at 8% (24 g of oil) and one unscented blank, all in the same jar and wick: ₹636.27 of materials with Apple Cinnamon.
The hot-throw test: room, schedule and score Walk in from outside. Your score is the first position where you notice the scent. window shut door fan and AC off candle on a table 1 2 3 4 5 jar chair, 1.5 m a step inside doorway outside the door 3.5 m x 3 m, 3 m ceiling ≈ 31.5 m³ ONE SESSION −15 min Close doors and windows; fan, AC off 0 Light the coded candle; everyone leaves 30 min Warm-up only; no score 1 h Score: walk in from outside 2 h Score again, same route 3–4 h Pool at the glass? Room is a worked example. Include one unscented blank candle in every panel: if it scores above 1, the panel is guessing.
The test layout. The room plan shows where the candle sits and the five positions that define the score. Walk in from outside the door and stop at the first position where you notice the scent. The schedule shows one session from room preparation to airing out. The score strip shows the 0 to 5 scale. All positions, times and the pass mark are editorial judgement, not an industry standard.
Straight answer
How do I test a fragrance oil's hot throw before buying it in bulk?
Run the same test every time, so the only thing that changes is the oil. Pour two candles of the candidate at 8% (or inside the lower of the oil page's maximum and your wax ceiling) and one unscented blank, in identical jars with the wick that already gives you a full pool in that jar. Cure them to day 14. Burn one per session in a closed room of about 9 to 15 m² that you have measured, with doors and windows shut and the fan and AC off. Light the candle and leave. Skip the 30-minute mark, then at hour 1 and hour 2 have two or three people walk in from outside, one at a time, and score it by where they first notice the scent: 0 not even at the jar, up to 5 outside the door. Nobody should know which candle is which. At hour 3 to 4 check that the pool reaches the glass; if it doesn't, the session tells you about the wick, not the oil. Buy in bulk only if both candles average 3 or more at hour 1 and hour 2 and the blank scores 1 or less. The kit uses about ₹636.27 of materials per candidate with Apple Cinnamon.
One line: same room, same times, same jar, blind noses and a blank candle, or it is not a test.
Test the oil that bulk would not save you money on. Apple Cinnamon is ₹4.74 per gram from 50 g to 1 kg, so the 50 g test costs nothing extra per gram. It uses 24 g for two test candles and leaves 26 g. Page states 6 to 10% in soy and a 48 to 72 hour cure. In stock at every size on 25 September 2026.

Why a hot-throw test has to be a standard, not an evening

Light a candle in the living room one evening and you have learned about that evening: the fan speed, your mood and what was cooked for dinner.

Hot throw is a judgement made by a nose, in a room, at a time. Each of those three can change more from one day to the next than two decent oils differ from each other. A candle judged on Sunday with the windows open and on Tuesday in a closed bedroom will get two different verdicts, and you will remember the one that matched your hopes. A bulk order is a decision worth thousands of rupees, so the test has to remove as much of that noise as it can. The method on this page does that with five fixed elements.

What the method fixes · and what goes wrong without it
Five elements, each removing one common source of false verdicts
Element Fixed as Without it
Room One measured room, closed, fan and AC off A big or breezy room fails a good oil
Candle Day 14, identical jar and wick, full pool by hour 3 to 4 A young or under-wicked candle fails a good oil
Times Scores at hour 1 and hour 2 only Early sniffs miss the pool; late ones meet a tired nose
Noses Blind panel of two or three, walking in from outside You score what you hoped for
Score 0 to 5, anchored to distance, plus a blank candle "Quite strong" means different things on different days

This is a method for judging one candidate against a fixed standard. Comparing two oils head to head, with positions swapped and a decision rule between them, is a related but different protocol (How to Compare Two Fragrance Oils for Actual Candle Performance). How many candles and loads a bulk decision needs is sized in How Many Test Candles Should I Make Before Buying Fragrance Oil in Bulk?. And why the unlit jar can mislead you in the first place is explained in the cold-versus-hot hub.

The room: size, preparation and what to write down

Pick one room, measure it once, and never test anywhere else.

Size. A bedroom or study of roughly 9 to 15 m² is a sensible test room for a single 150 g jar. That is our judgement, not a standard. It is large enough that a weak candle cannot fill it by accident, and small enough that a good one can. Worked example: a room 3.5 m by 3 m is 10.5 m² of floor; with a 3 m ceiling it holds 31.5 m³ of air. Write both on your sheet. If you sell mainly to customers with open-plan living rooms, add a second, larger room later, but keep the first as your reference.

Preparation, every session. Fifteen minutes before lighting, close the doors and windows. Switch off the ceiling fan, pedestal fan, AC and any exhaust fan; many Indian homes run at least one of these all day, and in our judgement it is one of the commonest ways a test is spoiled. Do not light incense, diyas, agarbatti or another candle in the house that day, and do not test straight after frying or tempering spices in the kitchen. The panel should not wear perfume, and nobody should have handled fragrance oil in the last hour.

What to write down. Room dimensions, date, time of day, whether it rained (open windows elsewhere in the house change air movement), and anything unusual: a door left ajar, a guest cooking. You will not need most of it. The one time you do, it will explain a result that otherwise makes no sense.

Monsoon and summer testing
In the southwest monsoon (roughly June to September) and Indian summer (roughly April to June), the temptation is to leave a window open or a fan running. Do not. A closed room will be warm for two hours; that is the price of a fair test. If the heat is unbearable, test later in the evening, at the same time for every session.

The candle: what must be true before you score it

A hot-throw test judges an oil only if the candle around it has done its job. Four conditions make the session valid. If one fails, record the session as void and fix the candle; do not record a low score against the oil.

Validity conditions · check before and during every session
A session that fails any of these tests the candle, not the oil
Condition What "valid" looks like If not
Cure Day 14 for the scored session; several CSI oil pages state 48 to 72 hours as the minimum for soy Wait; an early score is a preview only
Load Weighed on total weight, inside the lower of the oil page's maximum and the wax ceiling Re-pour; note Fresh Strawberries' 9% page maximum
Jar and wick The same jar type and a wick that already gives a full pool with a comparable oil in that jar Bracket the wick first; the re-wick method is in How to Choose a Wick After Changing Fragrance Oil
Pool At the glass by hour 3 to 4 (a common rule of thumb); log the time Session void; the oil may be heavier and need a larger wick

Is it actually the fragrance oil? Build the answer into the test

Many failed hot-throw tests are not failed oils: they are young candles, small pools or breezy rooms. The validity conditions above are this method's way of refusing to blame the oil for any of them. If a candidate fails with all four conditions met, the blank candle scores low (so the panel is not guessing), and the repeat candle agrees, then you have a real result about the oil. Before rejecting it, ask whether you tested at a sensible load inside its range. A candidate that fails at 6% has not been tested at 8%. Whether to swap an oil you already use is a different decision (Strong Cold Throw but No Hot Throw — Should I Change Fragrance Oil?).

Argued against our own interest: a test that ends "void, fix the wick" does not sell any fragrance oil. It is still a common honest outcome of a first hot-throw test, and it saves you from rejecting a good oil or bulk-buying a replacement that will fail in the same candle. A ₹59.00 pack of wicks is often the purchase this test sends you to.

The session: burn times and check-in points

Two scores per session, at hour 1 and hour 2. Everything else is preparation or housekeeping.

One candle per session, one session per evening. Two candles burning in the same room cannot be told apart, and a room that has just had a scented candle in it is not clean for the next for some time.

1
Minus 15 minutes — close the roomDoors and windows shut, fans and AC off, no other scent sources. Place the coded candle on the table, away from the door and any draught. Trim the wick to your usual length.
2
0 — light it and leaveThe person who lights it leaves too, and closes the door. Nobody stays in the room. A nose that sits beside a candle adapts to it and will under-score it.
3
30 minutes — warm-up, no scoreThe pool is still forming. You may peek from the doorway to confirm the flame is steady, but do not record a throw score; early readings mostly measure how fast the pool starts.
4
Hour 1 — first scoreEach panel member, one at a time, starts outside the closed door, opens it, and walks slowly towards the candle, stopping at the first position where they notice the scent. That position is the score. They write it down without speaking, then leave. Give each person a few minutes outside in fresh air before they enter.
5
Hour 2 — second score, same routeRepeat exactly. Hour 2 is usually the fuller reading, when the pool is wide and established. Add one line of character words: does it still smell like the oil you chose, or has it gone flat, sharp or sweet?
6
Hour 3 to 4 — the pool check, then snuffLook at the pool: at the glass, and roughly 0.5 to 1 cm deep (a common target)? Write the time it reached the edge. Then extinguish it; many makers keep test burns to about four hours. Keep burning within sight throughout.
7
After — air the roomOpen everything for at least 30 minutes, fans on. The next candle is tested on another evening, not after an hour's airing. Scents cling to fabric and curtains more than you expect.

Why hour 1 and hour 2 and not 30 minutes: a 150 g jar about 6 to 7 cm across commonly takes 2 to 3 hours to reach a full pool, going by the rough guide of about one hour per 2.5 cm of width. Hour 1 tells you how quickly the candle gets going, and hour 2 how it performs once established. Both matter to a customer, and together they stop one lucky or unlucky moment from deciding a bulk order.

The blind panel and the blank candle

If you poured it, you know what it is. If you know what it is, you are not testing it; you are hoping.

Who. Two or three people, ideally including at least one who did not pour the candles. Family members are fine. They do not need to be experts; the distance-anchored score is designed so that anyone can give it. What matters is that each person scores alone and does not hear the others first.

How blind. Write a code on the base of each jar, never the side. Someone other than the scorers keeps the key and places the candle. Use identical jars, lids off, and the same wick, so nothing about the candle's look gives it away. Vary the order across evenings, so a candidate is not always tested on a Friday when everyone is tired.

The blank candle: a cheap honesty check

Pour one candle with no fragrance at all: 150 g of the same wax, same jar, same wick. Give it a code like the others and test it in its own session. A panel that notices "a lovely scent" from the doorway for an unscented candle is responding to expectation, not to the oil. It is a common enough effect that the blank earns its place. If the blank scores above 1 (noticed beyond the jar itself), your panel's other scores from that week are suspect; retest with fresh noses. The blank costs 150 g of wax, a jar and a wick, and it is the single line on the kit list that protects the rest of your money.

Mistake: the maker lights the candle, sits beside it with a cup of tea for an hour, and writes "strong" at the end. Why it fails: an adapted, unblinded nose next to the jar is measuring hope at a distance of 50 cm. Fix: leave the room, come back in from outside, stop where you first notice it, and let a blank candle keep everyone honest.

The scoring sheet and the pass mark

One line per person per check-in. Keep the sheets together; after three or four candidates, the sheet is worth more than any product description, ours included.

The scoring sheet · one row per scorer per check-in
Columns to copy onto paper or a spreadsheet
Field Example entry Why it is there
Candle code K2 Blind; the key lives elsewhere
Pour date and age today 1 Oct; day 14 Only same-age candles compare
Load and wick 8%, 12 g; C1 From the pour log, filled in after unblinding
Add temperature From the thermometer log Rules out a process difference
Room and conditions Study, 10.5 m²; closed; fan off; dry evening Explains odd results later
Scorer Initials Some noses run high; compare each person with themselves
Hour 1 score (0–5) 3 How quickly the candle gets going
Hour 2 score (0–5) 4 Established performance
Character words "baked apple, cinnamon clear, not sharp" Strength without character is not a pass
Pool at edge (time) and depth 2 h 40 min; about 0.8 cm Validity: void the session if short
Soot, flicker, smoke None A throw that comes with soot is not a pass

The pass mark we would use before a bulk order

Our judgement, not a standard. It is set so that a single good evening cannot trigger a kilogram.

Pass mark before bulk · editorial judgement
All five must hold
# Condition
1 Every session valid: day 14, full pool by hour 3 to 4, no soot
2 Panel average of 3 or more (noticed a step inside the room) at hour 1 and at hour 2
3 The second candle, from a separate session, within one point of the first
4 The blank candle averages 1 or less
5 The character words at hour 2 still describe the scent you chose

A candidate that passes has earned a bulk order in principle. Before the kilogram itself, cost per candle, discolouration and stability over two weeks, and stock depth all deserve their own check. That gate is in What Should I Test Before Buying 1 Kg of a New Candle Fragrance Oil?.

What the test kit costs

For one candidate: two 150 g candles at 8% (24 g of oil, 276 g of wax) and one unscented blank (150 g of wax), so 426 g of wax, three jars and three wicks. Figures exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST.

Test kit for one candidate · CSI live pricing, 25 September 2026
Materials consumed ₹636.27 with Apple Cinnamon; new spend depends on what you already own
Item What the test uses Buy if you own none Value consumed
Apple Cinnamon 50 g (candidate) 24 g ₹237.18 ₹113.85

Eco C1 wicks, pack of 10 (or your passing wick) 3 wicks ₹59.00 ₹17.70
Total 2 candles + 1 blank ₹1,500.18 ₹636.27

Add ₹354.00 each for a Pen Thermometer and a Candle Making Weighing Scale if you have neither (₹2,208.18 in all). With Fresh Strawberries as the candidate, the no-stock spend is ₹1,475.40. Two candidates in the same week can share one blank, the jar pack and the wick pack, but the second candidate adds its 50 g bottle and 276 g of wax, which takes the wax to 702 g, past one 500 g bag. With Fresh Strawberries as the second candidate, the no-stock spend for both is ₹1,972.58, including a second 500 g of CSI 464; the two 50 g bottles alone are ₹449.58. The CSI 464 500 g is ₹0.52 per gram against ₹0.51 at 1 kg; the page's price is flat per gram from 1 kg to 10 kg, so if you already buy wax in bulk, use your own.

Put that against what the test protects. Apple Cinnamon's 1 kg is ₹4,743.60, 20.0 times the 50 g test bottle and 7.5 times the value of everything the test consumes. It makes 83 candles at 8%. A kilogram that fails in your candle is 83 weak candles, or a bottle on a shelf.

We sell the kilogram. Do not buy it on one candle. A single candle burned once is a sample of one evening, one wick and one nose. Two candles, two sessions and a blank consume about a seventh of the kilogram's price in materials. If you are ordering 500 g or 1 kg of anything this season, run this first.

Candidates and kit to buy

Two candidate oils that show different sides of a bulk decision, one flat-priced and one with a big bulk saving, plus the jar and thermometer that keep the test consistent. The oils were chosen on stated candle load inside the lower ceiling, a stated structure with a named base, price per gram and stock at every size on 25 September 2026. They were not chosen on throw, which CSI has not measured; that is what this test is for. Candle counts assume 150 g at 8%.

1
spiced gourmand · a winter candidate worth testing properly · flat per gram from 50 g
Apple Cinnamon Fragrance Oil
A good oil to run through this method before a festive bulk order, because nothing about its price rewards buying big early. From 50 g to 1 kg it is flat at ₹4.74 per gram, so the 50 g test bottle costs no more per gram than the kilogram. The page describes "crisp juicy apple and spicy cinnamon opening into baked goods and nutmeg, settling into vanilla and warm amber" and states "6-10% for soy wax candles, cure 48-72 hours. 6-8% for paraffin wax". One verified customer on the page wrote that their customer noticed it "as soon as they entered their home". That is one home and one candle, a useful anecdote and not a test. Limitation: a vanilla and amber base can darken light wax over time (the page states no vanillin figure), and dense spiced oils often need a wick check, so confirm the pool reaches the glass before you score.

fruity · a candidate with a 9% page maximum · big saving at 1 kg
Fresh Strawberries
The candidate that teaches the two-ceilings rule. The page states "Recommended fragrance load 6-9% for candles". In CSI 464 (up to 10%) or CSI 468 (up to 13%), the oil page's 9% governs, so a 150 g candle tops out at 13.5 g of oil. Test at 8%, not 10%. The notes are fully structured: "ripe strawberry and citrus zest top notes, sweet rose and honeydew melon middle notes, and vanilla sugar and creamy sandalwood base". The page states no cure time in the text we hold, so judge at day 14 as practice. Two reviews on the page praise the fragrance; neither mentions a lit candle. Unlike Apple Cinnamon, bulk pays here: the 1 kg is 16.7% cheaper per gram than the 50 g, which makes a proper test before the kilogram more worthwhile, not less. Limitation: the 15 g is 78% dearer per gram than the 50 g and makes only one 8% candle; skip it.
Size Price Per gram 150 g candles at 8%

jar · the standard test vessel · keep every test in one jar type
Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram)
A hot-throw test is only comparable if the vessel is identical every time, because jar width sets the pool you are judging. This jar suits the method: the page states a "150g fill capacity", "Height 8cm, outer diameter 7cm" and "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C", so candles poured from CSI 464 at its stated 80°C–90°C pour temperature should be poured at the lower end, 85°C or below. Clear glass also lets you see the pool from the doorway without walking up to it, which keeps the panel honest. Every candle maths line on this page assumes this jar. Limitation: the inside diameter is not stated, so measure it and write it on your sheet. Other jars need their own wick check, and scores from different jars are not comparable.

Pen Thermometer For Candle Making
A hot-throw test compares oils, so everything else has to be the same, including the temperature at which each oil went into the wax. The number comes from your wax page: CSI 464 states a pour temperature of 80°C–90°C, CSI 468 58°C–60°C, and Eco Soy CSI 400 says to add fragrance at 85°C and stir gently for 2 minutes. Log the reading for every melt on the scoring sheet. Pair it with the Candle Making Weighing Scale so the 12 g is 12 g. The thermometer page publishes no range or tolerance in the text we hold. Limitation: it removes one excuse from a failed test, not the need for the test. Skip both if you already own working ones.

Diwali is close; Christmas is not: test timing

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 44 days after these prices were checked; Christmas on 25 December 2026, 91 days after. The method takes at least 14 days from pour to the scored session, plus a second session for the repeat candle. A production batch then needs its own cure. Worked out honestly, a brand-new oil can just reach Diwali if the test candles are poured this week. It has no slack for a void session, a wick fix or a retest.

For Diwali, the safer course is to put your bulk money on an oil you have already tested, and to test new candidates now for Christmas and for winter, roughly December to February. That is not an attempt to sell you less; it is the calendar.

Passed on two candles, blank at 1 or below? Then it has earned a bulk quote. Tell us the oil, 500 g or 1 kg, and the production date you are working to, and we will confirm GST invoice, stock and dispatch before Diwali 8 November or Christmas 25 December 2026.

The CSI principle
A test you cannot repeat is an opinion. Fix the room, the times and the noses, and it becomes evidence.
Two candles, a blank and two sessions consume about a seventh of what a kilogram costs. They are the difference between buying a scent and buying a result.
"Walk in from outside and stop where you first notice it. That one habit fixes a lot of hot-throw tests."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, jars, wax, wicks and tools named here and does not sell finished candles. This method is designed to stop you buying our oils in bulk until they have earned it in your own candle, and to void a test rather than blame an oil when the wick or the room is at fault.

Every price and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 25 September 2026. Every size shown in the pick cards is in stock on that date; any that was not would be flagged as out of stock. Loads, notes, cure, jar dimensions and wax temperatures are quoted from product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.

The room size, schedule, anchored score, blank-candle rule and pass mark are editorial judgement drawn from common testing practice. They are not an industry standard, and CSI has no measured throw data for any oil. Frequently asked questions

How do you test the hot throw of a candle?
Burn one cured candle at a time in a closed, measured room with fans and AC off. Leave, then at hour 1 and hour 2 walk in from outside and score it by where you first notice the scent, from 0 (not even at the jar) to 5 (outside the door). Use a blind panel and an unscented blank candle.
How long should a soy candle cure before a hot throw test?
Several CSI oil pages state 48 to 72 hours as the minimum for soy. For a test that decides a bulk order, score at day 14 and compare only candles of the same age. That is common practice, not a rule.
What size room should I use to test candle scent throw?
One closed room of roughly 9 to 15 m² for a single 150 g jar, in our judgement, measured and used for every test. Write down the floor area and ceiling height; a 3.5 m by 3 m room with a 3 m ceiling holds 31.5 m³.
How long should I burn a candle to test hot throw?
Score at hour 1 and hour 2, then check at hour 3 to 4 that the pool has reached the glass, roughly 0.5 to 1 cm deep. If it hasn't, the session is void: fix the wick before judging the oil. Many makers keep test burns to about four hours.
How do I score candle hot throw objectively?
Anchor the score to distance, not adjectives. Walking in from outside, the score is the first position where you notice the scent: outside the door 5, doorway 4, a step inside 3, a chair 1.5 m away 2, only at the jar 1, nowhere 0. Score blind, alone, with a blank candle in the panel.
Should I buy fragrance oil in bulk after one good test candle?
No. Our pass mark before bulk is two candles from separate sessions, both averaging 3 or more at hour 1 and hour 2, a blank scoring 1 or less, and a full pool by hour 3 to 4. The kit for one candidate uses about ₹636.27 of materials with Apple Cinnamon.
Your hot-throw test
Two candles, one blank, one measured room: about ₹636.27 of materials per candidate.
Pour them this week, cure them to day 14, and score them blind at hour 1 and hour 2. If the candidate passes on both candles, it has earned a bulk order. If a session is void, you have found a wick or room problem before it cost you a kilogram.

Non-price figures: candle maths assume a 150 g candle with load as a percentage of total weight (8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax; the blank is 150 g of unscented wax); candle counts are whole candles, floor(grams ÷ 12). The 3.5 m × 3 m × 3 m room is a worked example. Jar dimensions and hot-pour limit, wax temperatures and ceilings, and oil loads and cure are quoted from product pages. The melt-pool rules of thumb, the four-hour burn habit, room size, schedule, score, blank-candle rule and pass mark are common practice or editorial judgement.
