The same 150 g candle, nine CSI oils, one honest question: is fragrance your biggest cost, or is it your jar? The arithmetic decides, and it decides your price.
16.2%–62.1%
fragrance as a share of materials in one 150 g candle at 8% load · ₹176.41 of wax, jar and wick before any oil · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Is fragrance oil really the biggest cost in a candle? Only above a certain oil price. In a 150 g candle — 150 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹76.11, a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at ₹94.40 and an Eco C1 wick at ₹5.90 — the non-fragrance materials are ₹176.41. At 8% load, Citrus Lemon adds ₹33.98 (16.2% of materials) and the jar is still your biggest line. A designer-inspired oil at ₹24.06/g adds ₹288.67 and becomes 62.1%.

How much does raising the fragrance load by 2 points cost? Three grams more oil on a 150 g candle. At 1 kg pricing that is ₹8.50 with Citrus Lemon, ₹15.66 with Lavender and ₹72.17 with a designer-inspired oil — or ₹1,566.30 and ₹7,216.80 across 100 candles. Check both ceilings first: the wax grade's stated maximum and the oil page's stated range, whichever is lower.

Should I cut my fragrance load to protect margin? It is rarely the biggest lever and it is the one customers notice. Dropping 8% to 6% saves ₹15.66 per candle on Lavender; moving from a ₹94.40 jar to a 70 gram votive at ₹31.86 and a smaller fill changes the whole candle to ₹102.52. Cut fill weight, jar or packaging before you cut the thing you are selling.

What retail price does a fragrance-led candle need? Work forward from cost, not backwards from a competitor. Materials ₹239.06 plus an illustrative ₹100.00 per candle for labour, packaging and overhead gives ₹339.06; at a widely used 2.5× multiple on full cost that is ₹847.66 retail. The same candle with a ₹24.06/g oil needs ₹1,412.71 to hold the same structure.
The short answer
Cost the candle, not the oil: wax, jar and wick are ₹176.41 of a 150 g candle before fragrance. Oil at 8% ranges from ₹33.98 to ₹288.67 — that is the line that moves.
Price forward, in one order: materials → labour, packaging and overhead → selling and platform costs → the multiple you can defend. Never set the multiple first.
Protect margin in this order: pack size of the oil, fill weight, jar, packaging, discount policy — and only then load. Cutting load is the one change your repeat customer smells.

Deliberately left out: labour, packaging, courier, platform fees and tax, because those are yours and not ours to publish.
Straight answer
How should I price my candles when the fragrance oil costs more than everything else?
Start by proving the premise. A 150 g candle in CSI's commonest glass costs ₹176.41 in wax, jar and wick before a drop of fragrance: ₹76.11 of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, ₹94.40 for the Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid and ₹5.90 for an Eco C1 wick. At an 8% load that candle takes 12 g of oil, and 12 g is ₹33.98 of Citrus Lemon, ₹62.65 of Lavender, ₹109.44 of Santal Noir or ₹288.67 of a designer-inspired oil at ₹24.06/g — a share of materials that runs from 16.2% to 62.1%. So "fragrance is my biggest cost" is true for some ranges and false for others, and the jar is the quiet winner more often than makers expect. Then price forward in four steps: materials at live pack pricing, an honest conversion cost for labour, packaging and overhead (this page uses an illustrative ₹100.00 per candle that you must replace with your own), your selling costs, and last the multiple. On that structure a Lavender candle at ₹339.06 full cost supports ₹847.66 retail at a widely used 2.5× multiple; the designer-inspired version needs ₹1,412.71 to keep the same shape, which is a different customer, not a different candle. If the number frightens you, take margin back in this order — buy the oil in 1 kg rather than 15 gm packs (₹21.36 per candle on Lavender, ₹2,136.40 per 100), cut fill weight or move to a 70 gram votive line at ₹102.52 a candle, negotiate jar and carton, tighten your discounting — and only then touch the load, because the load is the product. And never buy a ₹24.06/g oil and run it at 6% to save money: you are paying for the name and hiding it.
One line: Cost the whole candle before you blame the oil: the jar beats fragrance in cheap-oil ranges, and when fragrance really does dominate, the fix is pack size, fill weight and price — not a quiet load cut.
Costing a range this month? The wax, jar and wick under a 150 g candle are ₹176.41: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg (₹76.11 for 150 g), a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid at ₹94.40 each (₹944.00 for ten) and an Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) at ₹5.90. Everything above that line is your fragrance decision.
Shop candle wax

First, prove it: is fragrance actually your biggest cost?

Most makers who say fragrance is killing their margin are looking at the wrong line of their own costing.

Fix the candle so the comparison is fair. This page prices one 150 g soy candle — 150 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, a 150 gram Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid, one Eco C1 wick, and fragrance at 8% of wax weight, which is 12 g. The wax is ₹76.11, the jar ₹94.40, the wick ₹5.90: ₹176.41 of materials that do not change whichever oil you pick. Then the oil lands on top, and the oil is the only line in the candle that varies by a factor of eight and a half.

Read the share column below before you touch your price list. With Citrus Lemon at ₹2.83/g, fragrance is 16.2% of materials and the jar is nearly three times the oil — cutting load in that range saves almost nothing and costs you the product. With Santal Noir at ₹9.12/g it is 38.3%, and with a designer-inspired oil at ₹24.06/g it is 62.1% and every other decision in the candle is a rounding error next to it. Same jar, same wax, same wick, completely different pricing problem.

Priced above: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 (₹76.11 for 150 g), 5 kg ₹2,537.00, 10 kg ₹5,074.00; Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid ₹94.40 each (₹944.00 for ten); Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) ₹5.90 each (₹590.00 for 100). Oils at 1 kg pack pricing: Citrus Lemon ₹2.83/g, British Rose ₹3.07/g, Jasmine ₹3.92/g, Woody Oud ₹4.53/g, Lavender ₹5.22/g, Solar Bloom ₹7.50/g, Santal Noir ₹9.12/g, Khamrah Qahwa ₹15.06/g, Club De Nuit Intense inspired ₹24.06/g.
Cutting the load first because it is the easiest number to change. On a Citrus Lemon candle, going from 8% to 6% saves ₹8.50 — about 1.6% of the candle's materials — and the customer who bought your candle for the scent is the one who notices. Meanwhile the jar at ₹94.40 is 44.9% of the same candle's materials and is negotiable in packs of fifty. Work down the cost stack by size, not by how easy the change is to make.

Build the cost stack once, in the right order

A price built backwards from a competitor's listing is a guess wearing a decimal point.

There are four layers, and each one must be a number you can defend to a customer who asks. Materials is the only layer CSI can price for you, and it must be at the pack size you actually buy — not the 15 gm trial bottle you first tried. Conversion is labour, packaging, jar cleaning, wick stickers, care labels, breakages and the electricity to melt: this page uses an illustrative ₹100.00 per candle, which is a placeholder you should replace with a figure from your own month. Selling is courier, packing material, COD failures, returns, platform commission and the cost of your own advertising. Margin is what is left, and it must also cover the working capital you tie up while candles cure for 14–21 days.

Cost stack
The same 150 g candle at three oil prices, built up layer by layer
Layer With Citrus Lemon (₹2.83/g) With Lavender (₹5.22/g) With a designer-inspired oil (₹24.06/g) Who sets it

Materials subtotal ₹210.39 ₹239.06 ₹465.08 The only line we can price
Conversion (illustrative) ₹100.00 ₹100.00 ₹100.00 Your workshop, your month
Full cost ₹310.39 ₹339.06 ₹565.08 Everything before selling costs
Retail at a 2.5× multiple ₹775.99 ₹847.66 ₹1,412.71 The market you sell into
Oil as % of materials 16.2% 26.2% 62.1% Arithmetic, not opinion

Two honest notes on the layers CSI will not fill in for you. We do not publish tax rates, delivery times, free-shipping thresholds or return policies, because those are not ours to state — your GST rate and input credit are a question for your accountant, and CSI provides GST invoicing so that whatever your position is, you have the paperwork. And the 2.5× multiple in that table is a widely used rule of thumb, not a CSI recommendation: a brand selling through a marketplace that takes commission, funds free shipping and runs sale events needs a larger multiple than a brand selling at a weekend market for cash.

PRICE THE CURE
Soy candles are sold weeks after they are paid for. A 100-candle Lavender run ties up ₹23,906.20 of materials that cannot be invoiced for 14–21 days, and festive runs stretch that: Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026, so festive stock should be poured by about mid-October. If your price does not cover the cost of that money, your business is funding its own inventory out of margin — which is fine in month one and fatal in month twelve.

What a load decision does to your price

Two percentage points sounds like nothing. Multiply it by a hundred candles and a rupee-per-gram figure.

A load change is a grams change. On a 150 g candle, 8% is 12 g and 10% is 15 g, so a two-point rise buys 3 g more oil per candle. What that costs depends entirely on the oil: ₹8.50 with Citrus Lemon and ₹72.17 with a designer-inspired oil — an eight-and-a-half-fold difference for the identical decision. Before you make it, check the two ceilings that apply: the wax grade's stated maximum and the oil page's stated candle range, with the lower stated figure governing. CSI 464 publishes up to 10%; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%. The Lavender page publishes 6–10%, so on CSI 464 a 10% load is the joint ceiling and there is no headroom above it to buy.

Load economics
Moving from 8% to 10% on a 150 g candle: 3 g more oil, per candle and per 100
Fragrance oil 12 g at 8% 15 g at 10% Extra per candle Extra per 100 candles Headroom on CSI 464 (up to 10%)
Citrus Lemon ₹33.98 ₹42.48 ₹8.50 ₹849.60 At the joint ceiling
British Rose ₹36.82 ₹46.02 ₹9.20 ₹920.40 At the joint ceiling
Jasmine ₹47.08 ₹58.85 ₹11.77 ₹1,176.90 At the joint ceiling
Woody Oud ₹54.37 ₹67.97 ₹13.59 ₹1,359.36 At the joint ceiling
Lavender ₹62.65 ₹78.32 ₹15.66 ₹1,566.30 At the joint ceiling
Solar Bloom ₹89.99 ₹112.49 ₹22.50 ₹2,249.70 At the joint ceiling
Santal Noir ₹109.44 ₹136.80 ₹27.36 ₹2,736.00 Range not published — test
Khamrah Qahwa ₹180.67 ₹225.84 ₹45.17 ₹4,516.80 At the joint ceiling
Club De Nuit Intense inspired ₹288.67 ₹360.84 ₹72.17 ₹7,216.80 At the joint ceiling

Read that last column carefully, because it is where money is genuinely wasted. If the oil page's range stops at 10% and your wax stops at 10%, then paying for a higher load is not an option you have — and any maker telling you they run 14% of a designer-inspired oil in soy is describing something neither page supports. Equally, a page that publishes no range at all (Santal Noir is one) is not an invitation to guess: start low, test, and ask on WhatsApp for what documentation exists.

There is one pricing lever hidden inside the load question that costs nothing to pull: the pack size you buy the oil in. The same 12 g of Lavender is ₹84.02 at 15 gm pack pricing (₹7.00/g), ₹64.80 at 100 gm pricing, ₹62.88 at 500 gm and ₹62.65 at 1 kg — a gap of ₹21.36 per candle, or ₹2,136.40 across a hundred. Makers who are certain fragrance has destroyed their margin are very often costing from trial bottles while pouring production batches.

Buying for a 100-candle run? At 8% load a hundred 150 g candles need 15 kg of wax and 1.2 kg of oil. Lavender Fragrance Oil is ₹5,221.00 for 1 kg (₹5.22/g) and Citrus Lemon is ₹2,832.00 for 1 kg (₹2.83/g); Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹5,074.00 for 10 kg and ₹2,537.00 for 5 kg. Materials for the run come to ₹23,906.20 with Lavender and ₹21,039.40 with Citrus Lemon.

Size ladders: where the jar quietly eats your margin

Per gram of wax, the mid-size candle is usually your worst product. Almost nobody checks.

A ladder of sizes is how a fragrance-led range stays sellable at several price points, and it is also where the arithmetic gets interesting. Fragrance scales exactly with wax — 8% is 8% at any size — but jars do not, and a small jar costs almost as much to make as a slightly larger one. Cost the same Lavender recipe at three sizes and the cost per gram of wax comes out at ₹1.46 for a 70 g votive, ₹1.59 for the 150 g standard and ₹1.49 for a 400 g double-wick jar.

Size ladder
One oil, three sizes — materials, oil share and cost per gram of wax
Candle Wax Oil at 8% Jar Wick(s) Materials Cost per g of wax
70 g votive · White Matte Votive Jar ₹35.52 ₹29.24 ₹31.86 ₹5.90 ₹102.52 ₹1.46
135 g tin · Tin Container 135 gram ₹68.50 ₹56.39 ₹96.76 ₹5.90 ₹227.55 ₹1.69
150 g glass · Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid ₹76.11 ₹62.65 ₹94.40 ₹5.90 ₹239.06 ₹1.59
400 g jar · Apothecary Jar with Dome Lid ₹202.96 ₹167.07 ₹212.40 ₹11.80 ₹594.23 ₹1.49
Priced above: White Matte Votive Jar 70 gram ₹31.86 each (pack of 10 ₹318.60); Tin Container 135 gram ₹96.76 each (pack of 12 ₹1,161.12); Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid ₹94.40 each; Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid 500 gm ₹212.40; Lavender Fragrance Oil at ₹5.22/g (1 kg); Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg; Eco Candle Wicks Thin (C1) ₹5.90 each. All four candles at 8% of wax weight.

Three things fall out of that table. The votive is the cheapest way to put your actual fragrance in a customer's hand — ₹102.52 of materials, which is why it works as a gifting and sampling SKU. The 150 g glass is the one to watch: the jar is ₹94.40 against ₹31.86 for the votive, so you are paying nearly three times as much for the container to hold twice the wax. And the 400 g jar is the best value per gram of wax while being the hardest to sell, because it needs two wicks, a longer cure and a price point most Instagram buyers scroll past. A ladder works when each rung has a job, not when it simply exists.

Where to protect margin — in order, not by instinct

There are six levers. Load is the sixth, and it is the only one your customer can smell.

The order below is deliberate: cheapest and least visible first, most visible last. Work down it and stop as soon as the numbers work. Most brands do the opposite — they cut the load quietly in month three, lose the repeat customers who bought the scent, and never connect the two events.

1
1 · Re-cost from your real pack size, not your first bottleRewrite the materials line at the pack you actually buy. Lavender at 1 kg is ₹5.22/g against ₹7.00/g in the 15 gm bottle — ₹21.36 per candle, ₹2,136.40 per hundred. If your volumes do not yet justify 1 kg of one scent, that is an argument for fewer scents, not for a higher price.
2
2 · Fix the fill weight, then the jarWeigh what you actually pour. A 150 g jar filled to 163 g costs you 13 g of wax and 1.04 g of oil per candle at 8% — real money at a hundred candles a month, and invisible on every spreadsheet. Then price the container properly: the jar is ₹94.40 of a ₹239.06 Lavender candle, and jars move in packs of ten, fifty and a hundred.
3
3 · Take the small consumables seriously onceWick stickers at ₹2.50 each (40 for ₹100.00), care labels at ₹0.83 each (₹413.00 for 500), a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 that stops you scrapping batches. Individually trivial, collectively a few rupees a candle, and all of them cheaper than a remake.
4
4 · Change the discount before you change the candleOn the illustrative structure above, a Lavender candle at ₹847.66 retail leaves ₹508.59 over full cost. A flat 20% festive discount takes the price to ₹678.12 and the contribution to ₹339.06 — you have handed over ₹423.83, which is more than the entire fragrance cost of the candle, three times over. Bundle, add a votive, raise the free-shipping threshold: anything but the flat percentage.
5
5 · Then, and only then, revisit the loadIf the arithmetic still fails, the honest move is usually a different oil at a proper load rather than the same oil at a lower one. Moving from a ₹24.06/g designer-inspired oil at 8% to Woody Oud at ₹4.53/g at the same 8% takes ₹288.67 of oil down to ₹54.37, and the candle still smells like something. Dropping the expensive oil to 6% saves less and sells worse.
Buying a designer-inspired oil and running it at 6% to make the sums work. The pages for those oils publish a recommended load of 7–10%, starting at 7%. At 6% you are below the range the manufacturer states, you have paid ₹24.06/g for the name, and the candle will be compared by your customer with the perfume it evokes. Either commit at 7–10% and price the candle at ₹1,412.71 on this page's illustrative structure, or build the range on a ₹2.83–5.22/g oil and put the saving into the jar and the photography.

A worked repricing: one hundred candles, two oils

The spreadsheet only becomes convincing when you do it for a real month of production.

Take a hundred 150 g candles a month, one scent, 8% load, CSI 464 in the 150 gram glass jar. With Lavender the materials are ₹23,906.20; with Citrus Lemon ₹21,039.40; with the designer-inspired oil ₹46,508.20. The gap between the cheapest and the dearest of those three is ₹22,602.00 a month on the fragrance line alone — which, depending on your price point, is either your entire net margin or a rounding error, and you cannot know which until the stack is written down.

Conversion cost of ₹100.00 a candle and the 2.5× multiple are illustrative placeholders for your own figures, not CSI data.

What to do with that table depends on which column you are in. In the Citrus Lemon column, fragrance is not your problem and you should stop rewriting the recipe: go and renegotiate jars, or sell a larger candle. In the Lavender column you have a normal, healthy, mid-market candle and the answer is usually a modest price rise and a better photograph. In the designer-inspired column you are running a premium product and must price like it — ₹1,412.71 on this structure — or change the oil. The one move that fails in every column is quietly reducing the load and hoping nobody notices, because the people who notice are the repeat customers you have already paid to acquire.

The CSI principle
Price the candle you actually poured, at the pack sizes you actually buy.
The same 150 g Lavender candle is ₹239.06 of materials on 1 kg pack pricing and ₹260.43 on 15 gm bottles. Nothing about the candle changed; only the invoice did.
A price you cannot explain line by line is a price you will discount the first time someone hesitates.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA sells fragrance oil from ₹2.83 a gram to ₹24.06 a gram, so we have an obvious interest in your buying the expensive ones and in your using more of them. This page is written against that interest. For most Indian D2C ranges the ₹2.83–5.22/g oils used at a proper load will out-sell a designer-inspired oil hidden at 6%, and in a cheap-oil range the jar — not the fragrance — is the line to renegotiate first. We also say plainly that two of our own reviewers have asked us to work on pricing and on delivery charges; consolidating orders into fewer, larger consignments is the honest answer we can give today, and bulk quotes are on WhatsApp.

Every price on this page is from live CSI stock in September 2026 and the linked product pages are authoritative. Oil usage ranges are quoted from the product pages: Citrus Lemon soy 6–10% of total wax weight, British Rose soy up to 10%, Jasmine soy up to 10%, Woody Oud soy 6–10%, Lavender 6–10%, Solar Bloom 8–10% in soy, Khamrah Qahwa and Club De Nuit Intense inspired 7–10% starting at 7%; the Santal Noir page does not publish a candle usage range, so treat 8% as a working figure to test rather than a published one and ask on WhatsApp. Wax ceilings are quoted from their pages: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 up to 13%. Where a wax ceiling and an oil range differ, the lower stated figure governs. Conversion cost, retail multiples, discount scenarios and the 100-candle run are illustrative arithmetic, clearly labelled, and not CSI data; tax rates and delivery costs are not published here because they are not ours to state.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of a candle's cost should fragrance oil be?
There is no correct figure, and any blog quoting one is guessing. What matters is that you know yours. On this page's 150 g candle at 8% load it runs from 16.2% of materials with Citrus Lemon at ₹2.83/g to 62.1% with a designer-inspired oil at ₹24.06/g. Below about a quarter, fragrance is not the line to cut; above about a half, the oil is effectively your product and your price must say so.
Is it cheaper to use less fragrance oil or a cheaper fragrance oil?
A cheaper oil, almost always, and it is also the more honest change. Dropping Lavender from 8% to 6% on a 150 g candle saves ₹15.66. Switching from a ₹24.06/g designer-inspired oil at 8% to Woody Oud at ₹4.53/g at the same load saves ₹234.30 on the same candle. One change costs you a scent your customer has not met yet; the other weakens the one they bought.
How do I price a candle with a designer-inspired or fine-fragrance oil?
As a premium product, at the load the page states, with the cost stack written down. Those pages recommend 7–10% starting at 7%, and treat candles as a secondary use — so the arithmetic is unforgiving: 12 g at ₹24.06/g is ₹288.67 of oil in a ₹465.08 candle, needing about ₹1,412.71 at a 2.5× multiple on illustrative full cost. That is a legitimate business if your photography, jar and packaging match it. It is not a way to sell a mid-market candle.
Does buying fragrance oil in 1 kg packs really change my pricing?
Yes, and it is the cheapest margin available. The same 12 g of Lavender costs ₹84.02 at 15 gm pricing and ₹62.65 at 1 kg — ₹21.36 per candle, ₹2,136.40 across a hundred candles, for an identical product. The catch is scent count: 1 kg of one oil only makes sense if you sell that scent. Ask on WhatsApp +91 7397976926 for bulk pricing and consolidate scents into fewer, larger packs.
Should my wholesale and retail prices use different fragrance loads?
No. Run one recipe per product and let the price differ, not the candle. Two loads for one SKU doubles your testing, splits your batch records and guarantees that a wholesale buyer will eventually compare their candle with your retail one. If a wholesale price cannot carry your normal load, the honest options are a smaller size in the same recipe, a minimum order that earns the price, or declining the order.
How do I explain a price rise to customers when oil prices move?
With the cost stack, in one line, without apology: the oil in this candle is 12 g at ₹5.22/g, and the price now reflects it. Indian buyers respond better to a specific fragrance-led reason than to a vague “rising costs” message. Raise once, properly, rather than twice in six months — and if you cannot raise, change the size rather than the load: a ₹102.52 votive at a lower price point protects the scent your customers came for.
