How to Start a Candle Business With ₹25,000
Share
How many candles is that? 90 a month: 45 × 150 g and 45 × 70 g, from 100 vessels with a 10% spare allowance (an assumption, not measured data).
What does each candle cost? ₹221.51 in materials for the 150 g jar and ₹93.40 for the 70 g votive, at an 8% fragrance load. Labels, boxes, courier and labour are your own figures.
What is deliberately left out? Printed labels, cartons, mailers, courier, electricity, labour, marketing and platform fees. CSI does not sell them, so they are blank rows — see the rows only you can fill.
What ₹25,000.00 actually buys at CSI live prices
At September 2026 prices, ₹25,000.00 buys a working two-size candle line with three scents and the tools to make it repeatable — and it does so with ₹3,390.60 to spare, which you are going to need. The CSI side of the basket comes to ₹21,609.40: ₹5,581.40 of wax, ₹3,663.00 of fragrance oil, ₹6,313.00 of vessels, ₹767.00 of wicks and ₹5,285.00 of tools and finishing supplies. Every one of those figures is a pack price on the store, multiplied by a whole number of packs. Nothing is rounded, estimated or negotiated.
That basket pours 90 finished candles a month — 45 at a 150 g fill and 45 at a 70 g fill — with a 10% spare allowance on vessels and wicks and roughly a fifth of the wax and a quarter of the fragrance still on the shelf at the end of it. The spare allowance is an assumption this page makes, not measured data: it is there because jars arrive chipped, first pours get scrapped and a wick sometimes goes in crooked.
| Block | What it covers | Amount | Share of budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vessels | 50 × 150 g glass jars with lids, 50 × 70 g votives | ₹6,313.00 | 25.3% |
| Wax | 11 kg of CSI 464 soy flakes at ₹507.40/kg | ₹5,581.40 | 22.3% |
| Tools and finishing | 10 items, from the melter down to care stickers | ₹5,285.00 | 21.1% |
| Fragrance | 1,100 g across three scents | ₹3,663.00 | 14.7% |
| Wicks | 50 Thick (C2) and 50 Thin (C1), pre-tabbed | ₹767.00 | 3.1% |
| Your own costs | Labels, mailers, courier, listing fees — your figures | ₹3,390.60 | 13.6% |
| Total | Priced at CSI ₹21,609.40 + held back ₹3,390.60 | ₹25,000.00 | 100% |
Two honest notes before the detail. First, the basket deliberately does not spend the whole ₹25,000.00 at one supplier — the last ₹3,390.60 is reserved for things CSI does not sell and therefore cannot price for you. Second, the tools are a one-time buy. Strip them out and the monthly materials bill is ₹16,324.40, which is the number that actually repeats. A ₹25,000.00 start is really a ₹5,285.00 equipment purchase plus your first month of stock.
The basket, line by line
Every line below is a live variant on the CSI store with a quantity against it. Multiply, add, and you get ₹21,609.40. Where a bigger pack would have been cheaper per gram but left stock sitting, the smaller pack is chosen and the reason is given — at this budget, idle stock is the enemy, not the per-gram rate.
Materials — ₹16,324.40
| Line | Pack bought | Qty | Unit rate | Line total |

| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 10 kg | 1 | ₹507.40/kg | ₹5,074.00 |

Tools and finishing — ₹5,285.00
This is the part that only gets bought once, and the part beginners get wrong in both directions: some buy nothing and fight the wax, some buy a wax melter the size of a pressure cooker before they have sold a candle. Ten items is enough to run a clean 90-candle month.
| Item | Price | What it does | If you skip it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini Electric Wax Melter 1 litre | ₹2,360.00 | Melts and holds the wax at temperature while you wick and label | A double boiler works; it drops temperature fast and ties up a burner |
| Pen Thermometer | ₹354.00 | Reads the add and pour temperature | You are guessing at the single number that most affects throw |
| Candle Making Weighing Scale | ₹354.00 | Weighs wax and oil to 1 g | Any 0.1 g kitchen scale does the same job — stock on this one moves, so check before you plan around it |
| Steel Pouring Pitcher 600 ML | ₹708.00 | Controlled pour into a 70 mm mouth | Spilled wax on the jar wall and on the table |
| Bamboo Stirring Sticks (5) | ₹118.00 | Two-minute stir after the oil goes in | A spoon works but carries flavour between scents |
| Wick Centering Device (5) | ₹118.00 | Holds the wick upright while the wax sets | Crooked wicks, one-sided burns |
| Candle Wick Stickers (40) × 3 | ₹300.00 | Glues the wick tab to the base, ₹2.50 a candle | Floating tabs and a wick that drifts mid-pour |
| Isopropyl Alcohol Spray 150 ML | ₹383.00 | Cleans jars before pouring and fingerprints after | Dust and oil under the wax, visible through clear glass |
| Candle Care Stickers Roll (500) | ₹413.00 | Burn-safety sticker on every base, ₹0.83 a candle | You are shipping a flame with no instructions |
| Candle Wick Cutter | ₹177.00 | Trims wicks to 5–6 mm before every test burn | Long wicks, big flames, soot on your own test data |
| Tools subtotal | ₹5,285.00 |
The rows CSI cannot price — and why ₹3,390.60 stays unspent
CSI sells raw materials, vessels and tools. It does not sell outer cartons, mailers, bubble wrap, printed labels, ribbon, shrink film, courier services, electricity, your hours, a website plan or an advertising budget. So this page will not put a number against any of them — not even a "typical" one, because a typical figure for a Mumbai maker shipping in 500 g boxes is nothing like a typical figure for someone handing candles over at a Jaipur exhibition stall.
Fill the table below with your own quotes before you place the CSI order, not after. It is the difference between a ₹25,000.00 start and a ₹25,000.00 start that runs out of money in week three with 90 unlabelled candles on the table.
| Line | Ask whom | Unit | Your figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed labels (front and base) | Local printer or online print service | per candle | — |
| Outer carton or mailer box | Packaging dealer | per candle | — |
| Bubble wrap or moulded insert | Packaging dealer | per candle | — |
| Ribbon, tissue, thank-you card | Stationery supplier | per candle | — |
| Courier or delivery | Your courier partner | per shipment | — |
| Electricity for melting | Your own electricity reading | per batch | — |
| Your hours | Your own rate | per batch | — |
| Marketplace or gateway fees | Your platform | % of order | — |
| Advertising or sampling | Your own plan | per month | — |
| Your own total | up to ₹3,390.60 |
Total the page the honest way: materials and tools from CSI ₹21,609.40 + your own costs, which only you can fill in. If your own quotes come to more than ₹3,390.60, the fix is to shrink the basket, not to pretend the rows are free. Dropping one of the five jar packs releases ₹944.00; dropping the melter releases ₹2,360.00; moving the 150 g line to Golden Aluminium Tin Containers at ₹360.00 for 12 changes both the vessel cost and the courier weight.
Why three scents and two sizes, and not six and four
Three scents is the smallest number that lets a customer choose, and two sizes is the smallest number that gives you a gifting price and a serious price. Every extra scent beyond three costs you a fragrance pack, a test batch, a photograph and shelf space; every extra size costs you a vessel pack, a wick size and a new fill weight to learn. At 90 candles a month, six scents means fifteen candles of each — too few to learn anything from and too many to have made.
| Oil | Pack bought | Rate | Grams bought | Wax it covers at 8% | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | 500 gm ₹1,593.00 | ₹3.19/g | 500 g | 6.25 kg | The workhorse floral — the one you are confident enough to buy deep |
| Roasted Coffee | 3 × 100 gm ₹1,170.00 | ₹3.90/g | 300 g | 3.75 kg | Gourmand contrast, bought shallow while it proves itself |
| Citrus Lemon | 3 × 100 gm ₹900.00 | ₹3.00/g | 300 g | 3.75 kg | Fresh and clean — the summer and kitchen-gift seller |
The pack-size choice is the interesting part. British Rose is ₹3.19/g in the 500 gm pack and ₹3.07/g in the 1 kg pack — a real saving per gram, but 1 kg is more oil than this basket will use in two months. Roasted Coffee and Citrus Lemon are bought in 100 gm packs at ₹3.90/g and ₹3.00/g even though 500 gm packs exist at ₹1,890.00 and ₹1,420.00, because a scent you have not sold yet should not be sitting in a 500 g bottle. The rule at this budget: buy deep only where you have already sold.
Loads: everything here is costed at 8% of wax weight — 12 g of oil in a 150 g candle, 5.6 g in a 70 g candle. CSI 464's product page states a maximum of 10% of total wax weight, and CSI oil pages commonly state a candle range such as 6–10%. Where a wax ceiling and an oil page's range differ, the lower figure governs, so on this wax you have 10% to work with and 8% is a deliberate step inside it. Pushing all three scents to 10% would add ₹619.11 to the month and is not a substitute for testing the wick (fragrance load without exceeding the ceiling).
Two sizes, two wicks. The 150 g jar takes the Thick (C2) wick at ₹9.44; the 70 g votive takes the Thin (C1) at ₹5.90. CSI does not publish a wick size for each jar diameter, so treat those as starting points and burn-test both before you pour 45 of anything — the wick guide by diameter gives the method. A Performance Wooden Wick at ₹59.00 each from the pack of 10 is a third option for a premium line, and at more than six times the C2 price it is a decision, not a default.
The month this basket produces: 90 candles
100 vessels come in; 90 candles go out. The 10% gap is the spare allowance — an assumption, not a measurement — covering a chipped jar, a failed pour and the two or three candles you will cut open to look at the wick. Wax and oil are bought slightly long so that a re-pour does not stop the month: 1,100 g of wax and 308 g of oil are still on the shelf after 90 candles.
| Component | 150 g jar candle | 70 g votive |
|---|---|---|
| Wax — CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg | 150 g · ₹76.11 | 70 g · ₹35.52 |
| Fragrance oil at 8% of wax weight | 12 g British Rose · ₹38.23 | 5.6 g Citrus Lemon · ₹16.80 |
| Wick | Thick (C2) · ₹9.44 | Thin (C1) · ₹5.90 |
| Vessel with lid | ₹94.40 | ₹31.86 |
| Wick sticker | ₹2.50 | ₹2.50 |
| Care sticker | ₹0.83 | ₹0.83 |
| Materials cost | ₹221.51 | ₹93.40 |
| Label, box, courier, your hours | your figure | your figure |
Notice what the pack size does to the fragrance line. The same 12 g of British Rose costs ₹38.23 bought as a 500 gm pack, ₹36.82 bought as a 1 kg pack and ₹50.98 bought as a 50 gm pack — a spread of ₹14.16 per candle between the smallest and largest pack, or ₹1,274.40 across a 90-candle month. That is the whole argument for buying oil in the biggest pack you will genuinely use, and the whole reason not to buy one bigger than that.
What 90 candles can carry — an illustrative check
To see whether the basket is the right shape, price the two sizes illustratively and subtract materials. Take ₹550.00 for the 150 g jar and ₹250.00 for the 70 g votive — both illustrative figures used here for arithmetic only, not CSI recommendations and not market data. Against materials of ₹221.51 and ₹93.40, that leaves ₹328.49 and ₹156.60 per candle, or 60% and 63% of the selling price.
| 150 g jar | 70 g votive | Month | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candles poured | 45 | 45 | 90 |
| Illustrative selling price | ₹550.00 | ₹250.00 | ₹36,000.00 |
| Materials cost | ₹221.51 | ₹93.40 | ₹14,171.04 |
| Left after materials | ₹328.49 | ₹156.60 | ₹21,828.96 |
| Share of selling price | 60% | 63% | |
| Labels, boxes, courier, fees, your hours | your figure | your figure | your figure |
Read that last row before you celebrate the one above it. ₹21,828.96 is what is left after materials, not profit. Labels, mailers, courier, platform fees, electricity and your own hours all come out of it, and every one of those is a row only you can fill. It also assumes all 90 candles sell, which in month one they almost certainly will not — a first month that sells 30 and gifts 10 is a normal first month. Two live guides take the pricing question further: the 2026 pricing formula and whether candle making is actually profitable in India.
The useful comparison is not profit but payback shape. Tools are ₹5,285.00 of the ₹21,609.40 spent at CSI; materials are ₹16,324.40. If the second month sells at the same rate, you reorder materials only — and the reorder is smaller than the first basket, because the wax, oil and tool lines are partly carried over. That is the real reason the first month feels expensive and the third does not.
Where ₹25,000.00 should not go
A big melter. The imported Electric Wax Melter at ₹21,240.00 for the 10 kg model is a genuinely good machine and it is 85% of this entire budget. At 90 candles a month the 1 litre Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 is not the bottleneck; your curing shelf is. Buy the big one when you are pouring more wax per session than you can melt in a working evening.
Bulk wax before a wick decision. 10 kg of CSI 464 is ₹5,074.00 and the per-kg rate is the same at 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg — ₹507.40/kg at every size. There is no per-kg discount to chase, so there is no reason to buy 20 kg before you know which wick your jar wants. Buy one 500 g pack at ₹260.00 of a second grade if you want to compare, and keep the rest of the money in wicks and test burns.
Finishing luxuries. Candle Liquid Shiner, gold mica, a wooden-wick line and a second vessel colour are all real products that make a candle look better — and all of them are decisions to make after the first 90 candles have told you what sells. A Candle Dye Liquid at ₹472.00 for 50 gm is the one exception worth arguing about, because colour is the cheapest visual difference you can buy; it is left out here to keep the basket honest at 90 candles, not because it is a bad purchase.
A kit you will outgrow in a fortnight. The Scented Jar Candle Making Kit for Beginners at ₹555.78 is a fine way to make your first four candles and a poor way to spend part of a ₹25,000.00 production budget, because the pack quantities inside it are sized for learning, not for selling. The kit versus separate supplies comparison sets out when each makes sense.
And one thing that is not a luxury. Test candles. Eight of them in week one, poured and burned before the production run, cost about ₹1,745.46 in materials. A production run of 45 jars with the wrong wick costs ₹9,818.19 and a fortnight. (How to test hot throw before launching a fragrance.)
Reordering, and the first upgrade to buy from revenue
Reorder on a trigger, not on a feeling. Fragrance oil is the line with the longest lead time in most Indian candle businesses, because a scent that sells out takes a test batch and a cure before the replacement stock is sellable. Vessels are the line that stops production dead. Wax is the most forgiving: it stores well in a cool, dry place and CSI 464's page gives a 60-month shelf life stored away from sunlight and moisture.
| Line | Reorder when | Top-up pack | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance oil | Below about 150 g of a selling scent | 500 gm of the proven scent | ₹1,593.00 |
| Vessels — 150 g | Below 20 jars | Pack of 10 × 2 | ₹1,888.00 |
| Vessels — 70 g | Below 20 votives | Pack of 10 × 2 | ₹637.20 |
| Wicks | Below 25 of either size | 50-pack of the size you are short of | ₹295.00 or ₹472.00 |
| Wax | Below 2 kg | 5 kg | ₹2,537.00 |
| Care and wick stickers | Below 50 candles' worth | 500 roll / 40 sheet | ₹413.00 / ₹100.00 |
The first upgrade to buy from revenue is not equipment. It is depth in the scent that sold: moving your bestseller from a 500 gm pack at ₹3.19/g to a 1 kg pack at ₹3.07/g takes ₹3,068.00 and lowers the fragrance cost of every candle in that scent. The second upgrade is a second vessel size or a second wick type, and only the third is a bigger melter. Equipment that saves an hour is worth buying once your hours are the constraint — and at 90 candles a month, they are not yet.
If you are running this from a flat, the home-business guide covers the space and storage side, and buying everything from one supplier covers what consolidating an order does and does not save. For what a bigger monthly volume needs from the same catalogue, the honest answer is more of the same packs — the per-unit rates on wax and Eco wicks do not fall with pack size, which is worth knowing before you plan a scale-up around a discount that is not there.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials — wax, fragrance oils, wicks, vessels and tools — not finished candles, and not the packaging, printing, courier or marketing that a candle business also needs. That shapes this page in a way that costs us sales: the basket stops at ₹21,609.40 and the remaining ₹3,390.60 of the budget is left as blank rows, because a supplier that invents a label cost or a courier rate for you is not being helpful. We would rather you spent less with us and had a working costing than spent the full ₹25,000.00 here and ran out of money before the first parcel went out.
Every price on this page is a live CSI variant price in September 2026, multiplied by whole packs and totalled in Python, not estimated. Per-gram and per-unit rates are derived from those same pack prices. Product pages are authoritative and prices change. The 10% figure for CSI 464 and the 80–90°C fragrance-addition window are stated on CSI product pages; the 10% spare allowance, the 8% working load, the 90-candle month and the ₹550.00 and ₹250.00 selling prices are assumptions and illustrations made by this page and labelled as such. Where a figure is not published — a wick size for a given jar diameter, a bulk rate, a delivery time — this page says so rather than filling the gap.
