Cost per candle · Forgotten costs
Your spreadsheet says ₹148.49. Your bank account will disagree. Between the raw materials and the customer's doorstep sit a dozen small costs, each too small to notice and together bigger than the candle itself.
₹324.48
full cost of one ₹499 single-candle order built on a ₹148.49 raw-material candle · includes labelled example figures for non-CSI costs
Quick answers — read this first
What costs am I forgetting beyond raw materials? Four layers: forgotten materials (wastage, test burns, stickers, tissue, scent testing), finishing (labels, box), per-order costs (mailer, void fill, courier, payment fees) and time and overheads (your labour, electricity, tool wear, samples, breakage in transit).

How much do they add? In our worked example, a ₹148.49 candle becomes a ₹324.48 order. The non-CSI figures are examples you replace with your own quotes, but the pattern holds: the forgotten costs add more than the candle.

Is ₹499 still profitable? On these numbers it leaves ₹174.52, a 35.0% margin on the selling price. That is a real business, but far from the 70.2% a materials-only view suggests. See the full stack.

Which forgotten cost is biggest? Per-order costs, led by courier. If the customer pays shipping separately, the order leaves ₹239.52 instead. The free-shipping post works through that choice.
The short answer
The candle: 160 g fill (illustrative) in a 200 ml Salsa jar with lug cap, 8% Citrus Lemon in CSI 464: ₹38.40 oil + ₹74.69 wax + ₹5.90 wick + ₹29.50 jar = ₹148.49.
Forgotten layers: Materials people forget ₹11.90 · label and box ₹31.00 (example) · per-order packing, courier and fees ₹103.98 (example) · labour, power, tools, samples, breakage ₹29.11 (example).
Result at ₹499: Full cost ₹324.48, leaving ₹174.52: 35.0% gross margin on price, 53.8% markup on full cost. Treat ₹499 as your price net of any GST you collect.
The ₹150 candle is the tip — what one ₹499 order really costs to deliver Raw materials · ₹148.49Forgotten materials · ₹11.90Label and box · ₹31.00Per-order packing, courier, fees · ₹103.98Time and overheads · ₹29.11 what most makers cost what they forget Full cost ₹324.48 · left from ₹499: ₹174.52 Layers 2–4 use example figures — replace with your own quotes
Bar heights are to scale. The black block is the raw-material cost most makers work from. Everything below the dashed line is real money that leaves the business on the same order. Layers two to four use example figures for labels, boxes, courier, gateway fees, labour and electricity — CSI does not sell or price those — so replace them with your own quotes before you use the total.
Straight answer
I can make a candle for ₹150 in raw materials — what other costs am I forgetting before deciding my selling price?
Usually more than the ₹150 itself. Take a 160 g candle in a 200 ml Salsa jar with Citrus Lemon in CSI 464: ₹148.49 in oil, wax, wick and jar. Above that sit four layers most first costings miss. Forgotten materials: pour loss and test burns, wick stickers, tissue paper and the testers of scents you never launched — ₹11.90. Finishing: labels and a box — ₹31.00 in our example. Per-order costs: mailer, void fill, tape, courier and the payment gateway's cut — ₹103.98 in our example. Time and overheads: your labour, electricity, wear on your tools, free samples and replacements for breakage in transit — ₹29.11. Together the order costs ₹324.48. At ₹499 that leaves ₹174.52, a 35.0% margin, not the 70.2% the raw materials suggest. Price against the full figure. Replace every example with your own quote first.
One line: the ₹148.49 is the candle; the ₹324.48 is the order. Customers pay for the order.
The cheapest way to keep a base candle near ₹150 is a value oil and a jar that already includes its lid. Citrus Lemon is ₹300.00 for 100 g (₹3.00 a gram) and the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with golden lug cap is ₹2,950.00 for 100, or ₹200.60 for a trial five.
Buy Citrus Lemon

The ₹150 candle, priced

Start with the number you already trust, and make sure it really is that number.

A candle that lands near ₹150 in raw materials is a common first target, and it is achievable with CSI's value tier. Our worked candle is a 160 g fill in the 200 ml Salsa jar. That fill is illustrative: CSI does not publish the jar's fill weight, so fill one to your line with water or wax and weigh it. At an 8% load, 160 g is 12.8 g of oil and 147.2 g of wax.

Raw materials only · CSI live pricing (oil, wax) 24 September 2026 · jar and wick from CSI's catalogue
Where the ₹148.49 comes from
Material Quantity Rate Cost
Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil (100 g pack) 12.8 g ₹3.00/g ₹38.40
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 147.2 g ₹507.40/kg ₹74.69
Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 1 ₹590.00 / 100 ₹5.90
200 ml Salsa jar with golden lug cap 1 ₹2,950.00 / 100 ₹29.50
Raw materials ₹148.49

Two choices keep this low. The oil is the cheapest per gram in CSI's range at 100 g, and the Salsa jar comes with its lid, so there is no separate lid cost to forget. Swap in a mid-range oil such as Lavender at ₹5.40 a gram and the oil line rises to ₹69.12. Swap the jar for a White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80 and you add ₹41.30, plus a lid if you want one. For the complete per-candle build-up with a lid and label, see the 200 g true-cost post.

The trial-pack trap. Buying jars five at a time while you test is sensible. Costing your candle at the trial-pack rate is not, and the opposite mistake is worse. Five Salsa jars cost ₹200.60, or ₹40.12 each. The 100-pack brings that to ₹29.50. Cost the candle at the rate you will actually buy at once you are selling, and be honest about when that will be.

The four forgotten layers

Every cost below is real, recurring and paid on the same orders as the candle. They are grouped by where they come from, because each layer is controlled differently. Layer one is still materials, and CSI prices most of it. Layers two to four are outside CSI's catalogue: the figures are examples to show the shape of the calculation. Replace every one with a quote from your own printer, box supplier, courier and payment provider.

Layer 1 — materials you forgot

Per candle · CSI prices or labelled working assumptions
Forgotten materials: ₹11.90 per candle
Cost Per candle Source
Pour-loss and test-burn allowance ₹4.52 4% of oil + wax — working assumption, replace with your measured yield
Wick sticker ₹2.50 CSI: 40 for ₹100.00
Tissue paper, half a sheet ₹3.25 CSI: 100 sheets for ₹650.00
Scent testing spread over the first 300 candles ₹1.63 five 15 g testers, ₹488.86 ÷ 300
Layer 1 ₹11.90

The allowance covers the wax left in the jug and the candles you burn to check quality. Plan 3–5% extra as a working assumption, then replace it with what you measure. The wastage post shows how to measure it batch by batch, and why rejects and broken jars need counting separately. The scent-testing line is the one almost everybody misses. Before you launched, you bought testers of scents that did not make the cut. Five 15 g testers cost ₹488.86. That money was spent to create your range, so spread it over your first few hundred candles.

Layer 2 — finishing the candle

Per candle · EXAMPLE figures — CSI does not sell or price these
Label and box: ₹31.00 per candle (example)
Cost Example per candle Source
Front label ₹8.00 Example — replace with your quote
Warning / base label ₹3.00 Example — replace with your quote
Product box ₹20.00 Example — replace with your quote
Layer 2 ₹31.00

Label and box costs swing more with quantity than anything CSI sells. Printed labels in a short run can cost several times the per-label price of a large run, and a rigid box can cost many times a folding carton. Get two quotes at the quantity you will actually order. Remember the warning or base label: safety information is a real cost even on a simple candle.

Layer 3 — the order, not the candle

Per order · one candle per order · EXAMPLE figures — replace with your quotes
Packing, courier and fees: ₹103.98 per order (example)
Cost Example per order Source
Mailer carton ₹22.00 Example — replace with your quote
Bubble wrap / void fill ₹6.00 Example — replace with your quote
Tape ₹1.00 Example — replace with your quote
Courier (if you pay it) ₹65.00 Example — replace with your quote
Payment gateway fee (example 2% of ₹499) ₹9.98 Example — replace with your quote
Layer 3 ₹103.98

These costs attach to the parcel, not the candle, so they fall per candle as orders get bigger. A customer who buys two candles in one order shares one mailer, one courier charge and one roll of tape across both. The packaging-per-order post works through that effect order size by order size. The gateway fee here is an example rate applied to ₹499; check your provider's actual rate, which may differ by payment method.

Layer 4 — time and overheads

Per candle · EXAMPLE figures plus CSI tool prices
Labour, power, tools, samples, breakage: ₹29.11 per candle (example)
Cost Per candle Source
Your labour (example ₹120/hour, 8 candles/hour incl. packing) ₹15.00 Example — replace
Electricity (example) ₹1.50 Example — replace
Equipment wear (₹3,599.00 of tools over 1,500 candles) ₹2.40 CSI tool prices ÷ candles
Free samples and gifts (1 in 25 candles) ₹5.94 Raw-material cost ÷ 25
Transit breakage replacements (example 2% of orders) ₹4.27 Example — replace
Layer 4 ₹29.11

Your time is the cost most home makers leave out, and it is the one that decides whether the business can ever pay you. The example assumes ₹120 an hour and eight candles an hour once you include wicking, pouring, labelling and packing. Your figures may be far from that, so time a real batch from start to finish. The tools line spreads a scale, thermometer, pouring jug and 1-litre melter (₹3,599.00 together) over 1,500 candles. Whether labour belongs inside cost or inside profit is a separate question, answered in the profit post.

The samples line is a cost, not generosity
Candles given to influencers, friends, stockists and the occasional unhappy customer all come out of the same stock. Decide a sampling budget, such as one candle in every 25 sold, and cost it in. If you do not, it comes out of your profit quietly and you will not know why the month looks thin.

The full stack for one ₹499 order

Four small layers, each easy to wave away. Stack them and the candle's ₹148.49 is less than half the story.
One candle, one order · layers 2–4 use EXAMPLE figures
From raw materials to the real cost of a sale
Layer Adds Running total Share of ₹499
Raw materials (CSI) ₹148.49 ₹148.49 29.8%
1 · Forgotten materials ₹11.90 ₹160.39 2.4%
2 · Label and box (example) ₹31.00 ₹191.39 6.2%
3 · Packing, courier, fees (example) ₹103.98 ₹295.37 20.8%
4 · Time and overheads (example) ₹29.11 ₹324.48 5.8%
Left from ₹499 ₹174.52 35.0%

On a materials-only view the candle keeps ₹350.51 of every ₹499, a 70.2% margin. On the full view it keeps ₹174.52. Both numbers are arithmetic on the same sale; one of them pays your rent. Two definitions to keep straight: gross margin is profit as a share of the selling price (₹174.52 ÷ ₹499 = 35.0%); markup is profit as a share of cost (₹174.52 ÷ ₹324.48 = 53.8%). Treat ₹499 as your price net of any GST you collect, and ask your accountant which rate applies to your product.

The CSI principle
Price the order, not the candle.
The customer pays once for everything that arrives at the door. Your cost has to be counted the same way: candle, finishing, packing, courier, fees and the time it took. Anything you leave out is paid from profit whether you counted it or not.

What the full cost does to your price

Once you have the full cost you can ask the pricing question properly. If you want the order itself to keep 50% of the selling price, you need ₹648.96, not ₹499. If you want to hold ₹499, you need to take cost out, and the stack tells you where. Courier is the biggest single example line. Charging shipping separately leaves ₹239.52 on the same order. A cheaper box or a plainer label can save more than switching to a cheaper oil.

Levers on the same ₹499 order · example figures
Which change moves the profit most
Change Saving per order Left from ₹499
Customer pays shipping (courier example ₹65.00 removed) ₹65.00 ₹239.52
Product box ₹20.00 → ₹10.00 (example) ₹10.00 ₹184.52
Two candles per order (one mailer, void fill, tape and courier shared) ₹47.00 ₹221.52
Oil load 8% → 7% (1.6 g less Citrus Lemon) ₹3.99 ₹178.51
Samples 1 in 25 → 1 in 50 ₹2.97 ₹177.49

Look at the fourth row. Cutting fragrance load by a full point saves ₹3.99 on this candle, because the removed oil is replaced by wax and Citrus Lemon is already cheap. Packing and courier dwarf it. That is the most useful thing a full costing teaches: the money is rarely where you were looking. For the fragrance-load maths in detail, see the fragrance-load profit post, and for testing a price point from the top down, the ₹399 target-cost post and the ₹180-at-₹499 margin post.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell oil, wax and jars, and it would suit us for you to believe the raw materials are the whole cost, because then every margin looks healthy and every order looks worth taking. They are not the whole cost. On a single-candle order at ₹499, packing, courier and your time can together cost more than everything you buy from us. Cost them in before you set the price, even if the answer is that you need to charge more.

Building your own cost sheet

1
Price the raw materials at your real buying rateGrams of oil and wax at the pack size you actually buy, one wick, one jar. Use the per-gram rate of that pack, not the cheapest pack on the page.
2
Add layer 1 from CSI prices and your yieldWick stickers, tissue, your measured pour loss and test-burn allowance, and the testers you bought to build the range, spread over a realistic number of candles.
3
Get real quotes for labels and boxesAsk at the quantity you will order in the next three months. Enter the per-unit figure, not the quote total.
4
Cost one average order, not one candleMailer, void fill, tape, courier and gateway fee for your typical basket. Divide by candles per order only after you know your average order size.
5
Time a real batchFrom wicking to sealed parcel. Divide your hourly figure by candles per hour. Decide now whether you are costing your time in or taking it from profit, and write that down.
6
Add the quiet costsTool wear, electricity, samples, transit breakage. Small individually, and each one a real rupee per candle.
7
Compare the total with your priceShow gross margin on price and markup on cost side by side. If the margin is thinner than you want, the stack shows you which layer to attack first.

Review the sheet every time a quote changes and at least every quarter. CSI's prices can change, and so can your courier's and your printer's. A cost sheet that was right at launch is wrong a year later if nobody updates it.

A ₹148.49 candle and a ₹324.48 order are the same sale. Only one of them is what it costs you.

Keeping the base candle near ₹150

The raw materials are still worth getting right, because every rupee there repeats on every candle. Two value oils suit a candle built for ₹150. Both show a real saving above the 15 g size, and both keep the oil line under ₹43.78 at 12.8 g.

The small CSI items in layer one. Wick Stickers are ₹100.00 for 40 (₹2.50 each). Premium Packing Tissue Paper is ₹650.00 for 100 sheets of 50 × 75 cm (₹6.50 a sheet); half a sheet wraps one jar. Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 are ₹590.00 for 100. CSI does not sell labels, boxes, mailers or courier, so those come from your own suppliers.
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. Festive orders are gift orders, and gift orders carry more packaging per candle. Cost the festive version of your candle before you price it. For wax, oil, jars and tissue in one quote, with GST invoicing, message CSI.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's costing guide could stop at raw materials and make every candle look richly profitable. This one counts the costs we do not sell — labels, boxes, courier, fees, labour — because a candle business that prices without them runs out of cash, and that is bad for us too.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar, tissue, sticker and tool prices are from CSI's catalogue as listed for this series (wick figures as verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026). Every per-candle and per-order figure is plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.

Label, box, mailer, void fill, tape, courier, gateway fee, labour and electricity figures are examples only, not CSI prices or market rates. Replace each with your own quote. The 160 g fill, the 4% allowance, the sampling rate and the breakage rate are working assumptions. For a materials quote with GST invoicing, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

What costs should be included when pricing a candle?
Raw materials, then four more layers: forgotten materials (wastage, test burns, stickers, tissue, scent testing), finishing (labels, box), per-order costs (mailer, void fill, courier, payment fees) and time and overheads (labour, electricity, tool wear, samples, transit breakage).
How much does it really cost to make and sell a candle in India?
It depends on your quotes, but the shape is consistent. Our ₹148.49 raw-material candle became a ₹324.48 single-candle order once example packing, courier, fee and labour figures were added. Replace the examples with your own numbers.
Is a ₹150 candle sold at ₹499 profitable?
On our example figures it keeps ₹174.52 per single-candle order, a 35.0% margin on the selling price. It improves if the customer pays shipping or orders more than one candle.
Should I include my own time in candle cost?
Yes, at least as a separate line. If you leave it out, your price may never pay you, and you cannot hire help later without losing money. The profit question is covered in the profit post.
How do I calculate candle cost per gram of wax?
Divide the pack price by its grams. CSI 464 at ₹507.40 for 1 kg is ₹0.5074 a gram, so 147.2 g costs ₹74.69. The same method works for oil: Citrus Lemon at ₹300.00 per 100 g is ₹3.00 a gram.
What is the difference between margin and markup for candles?
Margin is profit ÷ selling price; markup is profit ÷ cost. In our example ₹174.52 of profit is a 35.0% margin on ₹499 and a 53.8% markup on ₹324.48. Always say which one you mean.
Cost the order, then price
Know your raw materials to the paisa, then add everything else before you choose a price.
Citrus Lemon from ₹81.42 for 15 g, British Rose from ₹94.40, CSI 464 soy wax at ₹507.40 a kilo, 200 ml Salsa jars with lug caps at ₹2,950.00 for 100, tissue paper at ₹650.00 for 100 sheets. Send your list and we will price it.
