Quick answers — read this first
How do I calculate finished candles? min( wax ÷ wax per candle, each oil ÷ oil per candle, jars, wicks, stickers ) — with pour loss, per scent, rounded down. Then subtract test candles.

How many does ₹50,000 make? 250 candles in this balanced order — 50 per scent, 240 to sell after 10 tests.

What goes wrong in a first draft? A 10 kg wax bag with 500 g of each oil and 200 jars binds on wax at 105 candles; most of the oil and 95 jars wait.

Which line should bind? All of them at about the same count. A few candles of cushion on each line is right; a line far above the rest is idle money.
The short answer
Answer: Candles = the smallest of (wax ÷ 94.76 g, each oil ÷ 8.24 g, jars, wicks, stickers) for a 100 g candle at 8%. This page's ₹50,000 order: 250.
Mistakes: Dividing wax by candle weight, forgetting pour loss, pooling all oils, counting test candles as stock.
Order: Chunks 4 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg, five oils for 50 candles each, 255 Yankee jars (2% breakage), Thin/Thick test then production wicks. Reserve ₹8,694.66.
Finished candles = the shortest stave Each oil stave shows its candles × 5 (one scent's share of five) so all staves share one scale · 100 g candle (illustrative) at 8% First-draft order ₹30,794.00 spent · wax binds 105 Wax 300 Gard. 300 RKR 300 M.C. 300 L&L 300 C.V. 200 Jars 200 Wicks 200 Stick. Water line = 105 candles Balanced order ₹41,305.34 spent · oils, jars, wax level 253 Wax 250 Gard. 250 RKR 300 M.C. 250 L&L 250 C.V. 255 Jars 260 Wicks 280 Stick. Water line = 250 candles A stave that towers over the water line is money in stock that cannot become a candle until the shortest stave is raised.
Each stave is one line of the inventory, measured in candles it can make (oil staves show one scent's candles × 5 so all staves share a scale). The water line sits at the shortest stave. In the first draft the wax stave is short and the oil staves tower over it; in the balanced order every stave sits just above the line.
Straight answer
I have ₹50,000 and want to launch five candle fragrances — how do I calculate how many finished candles my initial raw materials can produce?
Divide every line by what one candle needs from it — each fragrance separately, with pour loss — round each answer down, and take the smallest. For a 100 g candle at 8% (illustrative fill in a Yankee 130 ml jar), one candle needs 94.76 g of wax and 8.24 g of each scent's oil with 3% loss, one jar, one wick and one sticker. A typical first draft — 10 kg of wax, 500 g of each oil, 200 jars — makes only 105 candles, because the wax binds. Balanced to 50 candles per scent, ₹50,000 buys 4 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg of Chunks, five oils, 255 jars and the wicks for 250 finished candles (240 to sell after 10 tests) — ₹41,305.34 at CSI, ₹8,694.66 kept back.
One line: the shortest stave sets the water line; buy so every stave reaches it.
Five fragrances on ₹50,000 make 250 finished 100 g candles in this page's balanced order — 50 of each scent, 10 of them test candles — for ₹41,305.34 at CSI with ₹8,694.66 kept back. The jar is the Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml, sold singly at ₹47.20 with a clear cap.

The calculation: one division per line, then take the smallest

An inventory does not make as many candles as its biggest line. It makes as many as its smallest.

To find how many finished candles a set of raw materials can produce, divide each line by what one candle needs from it, round each answer down, and take the smallest. Every word in that sentence matters. Each line means every fragrance separately, not all oil added together. What one candle needs means the wax in the candle, not the candle's weight, plus pour loss. Round down because a part-candle does not sell. And the smallest because the shortest line stops production for everything else.

Per-line formulas · CSI convention: load is a share of the finished candle · 3% pour loss on wax and oil (labelled)
How many candles each line makes
Line Formula For a 100 g candle at 8%
Wax floor( wax g ÷ ( W × (1 − L) × 1.03 ) ) wax g ÷ 94.76 g
Each fragrance oil floor( oil g ÷ ( W × L × 1.03 ) ) — per scent oil g ÷ 8.24 g
Jars jar count (after any breakage) 1 per candle
Wicks wick count ÷ wicks per candle 1 per candle (single-wick)
Wick stickers sticker count ÷ wicks per candle 1 per candle
Finished candles min( wax, Σ oils, jars, wicks, stickers ) then subtract test candles for the saleable count

The jar in this example is the Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml with clear cap. CSI does not publish its fill weight; 130 ml is a volume, and with a labelled approximation of about 0.86–0.90 g of solid wax per ml the brim would hold roughly 112–117 g. This page uses an illustrative 100 g candle, filled below the brim — weigh one test pour and replace 100 g with your number before you buy. At 100 g and a working 8%, each candle is 8 g of oil and 92 g of wax; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' page states a 13% maximum, so 8% sits well inside it.

Run it on a typical first-draft order

Here is an order many makers would place for five fragrances: a 10 kg bag of wax, 500 g of each oil, 200 jars, 200 wicks and enough stickers. It feels generous — and it costs only ₹30,794.00, so it seems to leave plenty of the ₹50,000 spare. Run the formula on it.

Reader's first-draft order (example) · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026 · wax CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026 · jars & wicks re-checked 4 October 2026
The first draft, line by line
Line Bought ÷ per candle Candles
Wax 10 kg Chunks 94.76 g 105 ← smallest
Gardenia 500 g 8.24 g 60
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) 500 g 8.24 g 60
Mango Coconut 500 g 8.24 g 60
Lemongrass and Lime 500 g 8.24 g 60
Cinnamon Vanilla 500 g 8.24 g 60
Yankee jars 200 1 200
Eco Thin C1 wicks 2 × 100 1 200
Stickers 5 × 40 1 200
Finished candles 105

The draft makes 105 candles, not 200 and not 300. The wax binds: 10 kg is 94.76 g a candle away from 105. Each oil could scent 60 candles, so at 105 candles shared across five scents roughly 327 g of every 500 g bottle sits idle, and 95 jars wait for wax. That is the barrel on the left of the diagram: one short stave, several tall ones, and the water line at the short one. Fixing it would take about 3 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g more wax (₹11,081.00) — after which the jars would bind at 200.

Four ways the count goes wrong. (1) Dividing wax by the candle's weight: 10,000 g ÷ 100 g = 100 — but each candle holds only 92 g of wax. (2) Forgetting pour loss: 10,000 ÷ 92 = 108.7, three candles more than you will actually pour. (3) Adding all oil together: 2,500 g ÷ 8.24 g = 303.4, which hides a scent that runs short. (4) Counting test candles as stock. Fix: one division per line, per scent, with loss, rounded down — then subtract the tests.

The balanced ₹50,000 order for five fragrances

Balance means every stave reaches the same height. Then ₹50,000 is spent on candles, not on stock that waits.

The balanced order starts from the answer: 50 candles per scent, 250 in all, two test candles per scent included. Every line is then bought to that count with pour loss and, for glass, a 2% breakage allowance (an example rate; use your own). The five oils are this page's example — Gardenia, Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine), Mango Coconut, Lemongrass and Lime, Cinnamon Vanilla — chosen to show a spread of prices; the method is identical for any five you choose. Every price is a listed, in-stock CSI pack and the lines close exactly on ₹50,000.

Total CSI spend ₹41,305.34 + reserve ₹8,694.66 ₹50,000.00 100.0%

Two rounding choices are worth seeing. The wax is 4 × 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg at ₹14,376.00: two 10 kg bags plus four 1 kg would be ₹14,394.00, because Chunks' 10 kg bag is ₹599.90 a kilo against ₹599.00 for the 5 kg; and 48 × 500 g would be ₹14,352.00 — a few rupees cheaper per kilo but a lot of bags. Mango Coconut is bought as one 500 g bottle because its 500 g is 20.7% cheaper per gram than its 100 g — one of the few CSI oils where the bigger bottle genuinely saves money at this volume.

Finished candles 250 10 tests + 240 to sell

The answer to the title, for this order: 250 finished candles, 240 of them saleable — 48 of each scent after its two test candles. Four scents bind at exactly 50; Mango Coconut's 500 g bottle could scent 60, the wax would stretch to 253 and the jars to 255 — so if you poured three extra Mango Coconut candles, the wax would be the line that stopped you. That small cushion above the water line on every stave is what a well-bought inventory looks like: enough to absorb a spilt jug or a cracked jar, not enough to tie up money. Per candle, the material cost runs from ₹142.42 to ₹167.19 depending on the scent, before labour, packaging, freight and GST.

The CSI principle
Count candles per line, per scent, with loss, rounded down. The smallest number is your launch; everything above it is either cushion or waste.
A cushion is a few candles' worth. Waste is a stave that towers over the water line.

Test before the production pour

Ten of the 250 candles are tests: each scent on an Eco Thin C1 and on an Eco Thick C2. Only the production wick waits for them; everything else is shared and bought now. CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart, and the Yankee jar's internal diameter is not published either.

1
Weigh your real fillFill one jar with water to your line, weigh it, convert with the labelled 0.86–0.90 g/ml approximation, then confirm with one weighed wax pour. If it is not 100 g, redo every division on this page before ordering.
2
Pour ten test candlesFive scents × two wicks: 92 g of Chunks and 8 g of oil each. CSI's Chunks page states fragrance addition at 80–90°C and pour at 75–80°C in its spec table (70–80°C in its step list).
3
Cure to one checkpointCSI's Chunks page states a cure of at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks. Use one labelled checkpoint for all ten.
4
Burn and record3–4 hour cycles with full cool-down (a commonly used working practice). Record full-pool time, depth, flame height, soot, mushrooming, jar warmth.
5
Buy the production wickEco Thin C1 at ₹5.90 a wick as budgeted, or Thick C2 at ₹9.44 if it wins — 1 × 100-pack + 1 × 50-pack + 4 × 20-pack of Thin costs ₹1,357.00; the same count of Thick would be ₹2,171.20, the difference from the reserve.
6
Recount before you pourWeigh what is left of every line after the tests and run the formula again. That is your real production count.

A wick passes when it is no worse than a candle you trust on every safety line and within the jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to; CSI publishes no numeric limits, and a hotter jar never buys more throw. The burn-test-samples post sizes the test allowance for a 100-candle run.

Turn the spare column into a reorder list
After the run, the spare column is your restock base: 310 g of wax, 5 jars, 10 wicks and a few grams of each oil. When one scent sells out, a reorder of its oil plus wax and jars is all you need — the reorder-sheet post turns this into a standing sheet.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. The first-draft order bought 2,500 g of our oils and used only about 865 g of it. We would happily sell it again. But oil that sits in a bottle because the wax ran out is not inventory, it is cash you cannot use — and the barrel on the left of the diagram shows exactly how much. Balance the order and buy less oil, not more.

The ₹10,000 hub applies the same scarcest-component rule to a first budget. ₹50,000: wax and jars or more fragrances shows that width barely changes the count when buying is balanced. 25 each of four scents and a four-fragrance corporate order run the per-scent oil maths from a fixed order, and already owning the oils runs this calculation backwards — from the oil you have to the wax and jars you need.

Divide every line by what one candle needs, per scent, with loss. The smallest answer is how many candles you have.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The first-draft order on this page would have sold more of our oil. We show it binding on wax because idle oil is your cash, not ours to keep, and a balanced order is the one you will come back to reorder.

Frequently asked questions

How many candles can I make from 1 kg of wax?
Divide by the wax in one candle, not its weight. A 100 g candle at 8% has 92 g of wax: 1 kg makes 10 with 3% pour loss.
How many candles does 500 g of fragrance oil make?
At 8% in a 100 g candle, 60 with 3% loss. In a 200 g candle, 30.
How do I know which raw material will run out first?
Divide each line by its per-candle need. The smallest result is the one that runs out first and sets your candle count.
Should I add all my fragrance oils together to count candles?
No. Count each scent separately — pooling hides a scent that runs short.
How many candles will ₹50,000 of raw materials make?
In this balanced example, 250 candles of 100 g (illustrative). A 200 g candle roughly halves the count.
Do test candles count in my production numbers?
They consume materials but are not stock. This order makes 250 candles, of which 10 are tests.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (100 g at 8% = 8 g oil + 92 g wax). The Yankee 130 ml jar's fill is not published; 100 g is illustrative and 0.86–0.90 g/ml is a labelled approximation. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — up to 10%, shelf life 60 months in cool, dry storage; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. Chunks' page also states fragrance addition at 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C (spec table; 70–80°C in its step list) and a cure of at least 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks. 8% load, 3% pour loss, 2% glass breakage and ten test candles are labelled working assumptions; the first-draft order is an example. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
