I Have ₹50,000 to Start a Premium Candle Brand — How Should I Divide the Budget Between Wax, Fragrance Oils, Jars, Packaging and Testing?
Share
How much should a premium brand spend on testing? About a tenth: ₹4,784.04 here, in two rounds — five 15 g testers for scent, then three 50 g finalists for wick and load. Premium customers notice a weak or sooty candle before they notice the label.
What does a premium fragrance add per candle? At 500 g rates, 16 g of Santal Noir is ₹147.17, White Royal Oud ₹129.63 and Dark Vanilla Oud ₹91.04, against ₹50.98 for British Rose. See fragrance.
Should a premium candle use wooden wicks? Only if it passes your burn test. Performance Wooden Wicks cost ₹41.30 each in a 100 pack against ₹5.90 for Eco Thin C1, so the switch adds ₹35.40 per candle and ₹3,540.00 across 90.
The ₹50,000 split
₹50,000 is enough for a real premium launch of about 90 candles in three scents, with proper testing and a considered finish. It is not enough to do everything at premium level, so the split has to rank. The ranking on this page is simple. Fragrance first, because it is what the customer experiences for forty hours after the box is gone. Testing second, because a premium candle that tunnels or soots does more damage than a cheap one. Jars third, because they are on the customer's shelf. Packaging last, not because it does not matter, but because it is the line with the least certainty and the most room to overspend.
| Category | What it buys | Type | ₹ | Share |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tools | Scale, thermometer, jug, sticks, centering devices, 1-litre melter, wick trimmer | Buy once | ₹4,130.00 | 8.3% |
| Testing | 2 rounds: 5 testers, 3 × 50 g finalists, 11 test candles, wooden-wick trial | One-off | ₹4,784.04 | 9.6% |
| Fragrance | Santal Noir, White Royal Oud, Dark Vanilla Oud — 500 g each | Consumable | ₹11,495.00 | 23.0% |
| Wax | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 18 kg (10 + 5 + 3 × 1) | Consumable | ₹10,791.00 | 21.6% |
| Jars | 90 White Matte Glass Jars | Consumable | ₹6,372.00 | 12.7% |
| Wicks + stickers | 100 Eco Thin C1, 120 wick stickers | Consumable | ₹890.00 | 1.8% |
| Packaging (CSI) | Premium Packing Tissue Paper, 100 sheets | Consumable | ₹650.00 | 1.3% |
| Packaging (your quotes) | Example: lid ₹25.00 + label ₹12.00 + box ₹60.00 = ₹97.00 × 90 | Example — replace | ₹8,730.00 | 17.5% |
| Reserve | Reorders, breakage, courier | ₹2,157.96 | 4.3% |
Two numbers deserve a second look. The tool line is ₹4,130.00, higher than in the ₹10,000 plan because it includes the Mini Electric Wax Melter (₹2,360.00) and a wick trimmer (₹295.00). At 90 candles plus 11 test pours, steady melt temperatures matter, and a premium brand should trim and re-light every test candle the way a customer would. The packaging example is ₹8,730.00, larger than the jar line. That is typical of premium candles, and it is why packaging quotes come before the production order, not after.
Testing: the line premium brands underfund
A standard candle can get away with one round of testing. A premium candle usually needs two, because the customer is paying for the whole burn, not the first hour. Round 1 chooses scents. Round 2 takes the finalists and settles the wick and the load in the jar you will sell. Skipping round 2 is how premium brands end up with a beautiful candle that tunnels halfway down.
| Round | What | Quantity | ₹ |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Scent | 15 g testers: Santal Noir, White Royal Oud, Raat Ki Rani, Dark Vanilla Oud, Bergamot Amber | 5 candles at 7.5% (15 g oil + 185 g wax) | ₹636.04 |
| 2 · Wick | 50 g finalists: Santal Noir ₹499.00, White Royal Oud ₹420.00, Dark Vanilla Oud ₹320.00 | 6 candles at 8%: each scent with an Eco Thin C1 and a wooden wick | ₹1,239.00 |
| 2 · Wick | Performance Wooden Wicks, 10 | 3 used, 7 for re-tests | ₹590.00 |
| Both | Eco Thin C1 wicks, 10 | 8 used | ₹59.00 |
| Both | White Matte jars, 3 packs of 5 | 11 used, 4 spare | ₹1,062.00 |
| Both | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 2 × 1 kg | 2,029 g needed; top up from production wax | ₹1,198.00 |
| Testing total | ₹4,784.04 |
Each 50 g finalist feeds two 200 g test candles at 16 g each, which uses 32 g and leaves 18 g per scent. That remainder is not wasted. It rolls into production as the pour-loss margin on top of the 500 g packs. The wick test is deliberately simple: the same scent, the same jar, the same load, and only the wick changes. Wick sizes for jar diameters are not published in this data, so the burn test decides. Burn each candle long enough for the pool to reach the glass, and trim and relight between sessions as a customer would.
Two of the Round 1 testers, Raat Ki Rani and Bergamot Amber, are assumed not to make the final three. That is a choice for the worked example, not a prediction. If Raat Ki Rani wins in your burn, swap it in; its 500 g is ₹3,387.00, which is ₹542.00 more than Dark Vanilla Oud's. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so your test is the only evidence that counts.
Fragrance: where premium actually shows
The three production oils are bought as 500 g packs. For all three, the 500 g costs no more per gram than the 100 g, and one 500 g covers 30 candles at 16 g with the 18 g left from Round 2 as margin. Santal Noir is ₹9.20 a gram at 500 g, White Royal Oud ₹8.10 and Dark Vanilla Oud ₹5.69. The table puts that into each candle and sets it beside a value oil, so you can see exactly what "premium" costs you per unit.
| Oil (500 g price) | ₹/g | Oil per candle | Material cost | Extra over value rose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose (₹1,593.00) — value comparison | ₹3.19 | ₹50.98 | ₹237.89 | — |
| Dark Vanilla Oud (₹2,845.00) | ₹5.69 | ₹91.04 | ₹277.96 | ₹40.06 |
| White Royal Oud (₹4,051.00) | ₹8.10 | ₹129.63 | ₹316.55 | ₹78.66 |
| Santal Noir (₹4,599.00) | ₹9.20 | ₹147.17 | ₹334.08 | ₹96.19 |
The most expensive premium oil here adds ₹96.19 per candle over a value rose. On a candle sold at ₹1,199 or ₹1,499, that is affordable; on one sold at ₹499 it is not. That is why the fragrance tier and the selling price have to be decided together. What a ₹799 candle can afford to spend on fragrance and packaging and how a ₹1,499 luxury candle allocates its cost do the margin side of this in full. Material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Wax, jars and wicks
Ninety production candles need 90 × 184 g = 16,560 g of wax, and 17,388 g with a 5% allowance for pour loss. That allowance is a working assumption, not a CSI measurement. The plan buys 18 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks as one 10 kg, one 5 kg and three 1 kg packs, ₹10,791.00. The Chunks are chosen because the wax maker rates them up to 13% fragrance load, against 10% for CSI 464. At 8% that ceiling is not needed, but a premium brand that later tests 10% stays well inside it. Both are formulation maximums, not regulatory limits.
One honest note on the wax packs. The 10 kg Chunks cost ₹5,999.00, ₹599.90 a kilo, which is fractionally more per kilo than the 1 kg (₹599.00) or 5 kg (₹2,995.00). There is no bulk saving; the 10 kg is simply fewer bags. If you would rather save ₹1,648.80 on 18 kg, CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo does the same job at 8%, at the cost of the lower ceiling.
| Wick | Pack | Per wick | 90 candles | Per-candle cost, Santal Noir |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 100 for ₹590.00 | ₹5.90 | ₹531.00 | ₹334.08 |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | 100 for ₹4,130.00 | ₹41.30 | ₹3,717.00 | ₹369.48 |
The plan budgets for Eco wicks, because that is the cheaper option and the one most likely to pass in a 200 g jar. If the wooden wick wins Round 2, the switch costs ₹3,540.00 more for the 100 pack, which is more than the ₹2,157.96 reserve. That is the first place the premium budget needs a decision, and the drop-first list below shows how to make room. Jars are 90 White Matte Glass Jars at ₹70.80 each, ₹6,372.00. Testing several jars vs standardising one explains why a new brand should settle on one jar before buying 90.
Packaging without guesswork
CSI sells one packaging item in this data: Premium Packing Tissue Paper, 50 × 75 cm, 22 GSM, ₹650.00 for 100 sheets, ₹6.50 a sheet. Lids, labels and boxes come from your own suppliers. Because we cannot quote them, the plan uses example figures and labels them as such. Replace every one of them with a real quote before you place the production order.
| Item | Source | Example per candle | 90 candles | Your quote |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tissue wrap | CSI · ₹650.00 / 100 sheets | ₹6.50 | ₹585.00 (100-sheet pack bought: ₹650.00) | — |
| Lid | Your supplier | example ₹25.00 | ₹2,250.00 | ________ |
| Label | Your printer | example ₹12.00 | ₹1,080.00 | ________ |
| Rigid box | Your supplier | example ₹60.00 | ₹5,400.00 | ________ |
| Packaging per candle | ₹103.50 (example) | ₹9,315.00 |
With the example figures, a finished Santal Noir candle carries ₹437.58 of materials and packaging, and a Dark Vanilla Oud candle ₹381.46. Packaging here is roughly a quarter of the finished cost. If your real box quote is higher, the difference comes straight out of the reserve, and at 90 candles every ₹10.00 of extra packaging per candle is ₹900.00. How to calculate packaging cost per order goes through courier cartons and fillers too.
If ₹50,000 does not stretch
Your packaging quotes, a wooden-wick win or a fourth scent can all push the plan past ₹50,000. Cut in this order. Range and volume go before quality, and testing goes last.
Once the first 90 candles sell, reorder by scent rather than by range. The ₹1 lakh plan shows how to stage inventory before you know which fragrance will lead, and making first candles smell premium on a limited budget covers the opposite case, where the budget is tight and the scent must still carry the brand. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A premium-brand page is an easy place to sell the most expensive oil in every scent. This one tells you to test before committing, points out that our 10 kg wax pack is not cheaper per kilo, and prices a cheaper wax that does the same job at 8%.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. White Matte jars, Eco wicks, scale and thermometer are Blog 760 figures, verified 10 September 2026. The melter, jug, stirring sticks, wick trimmer, wooden wicks, wick stickers and tissue paper come from CSI's pull of 24–25 September 2026. Shares, per-candle costs and totals are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.
The 200 g candle, 8% production load, 7.5% test load, 5% pour-loss allowance and choice of finalists are working assumptions for the example. Lid, label and box figures are examples only, not CSI prices or market rates — replace them with your own quotes.
