Units sold tell you what left the shelf. Correct them for the stock you want to hold, add the candles you pull and the ones that fail, apply pour loss — then a month of sales becomes grams of wax, grams of oil, wicks and jars.
177.68 g
of wax to buy per 180 g candle sold at 8% (3% loss, 4% rejects) · not 180 g · Natural Soy Pearl, CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What is the formula? To make = sold + target shelf − shelf today. To pour = (to make + QC) ÷ (1 − rejects). Material = poured × BOM × (1 + loss), per SKU, then added up per shared material.

How much wax for 300 sold? Not 54,000 g. On this page's example — 180 g at 8%, shelf rebuild, QC, 4% rejects, 3% loss — 57,481 g of Natural Soy Pearl, bought as 5 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg.

Is there a shortcut? In a steady month, yes: 177.68 g wax and 15.45 g oil per candle sold, 1.042 wicks and 1.062 jars, plus QC candles.

What does the order cost? ₹57,960.80 CSI subtotal for wax, three oils, 340 wicks and 350 Salsa jars with caps. Labels, boxes, freight and GST are yours to add.
The short answer
Answer: Correct each SKU's units sold for the finished stock you want to hold, add QC candles, divide by (1 − reject rate), multiply by the per-candle BOM with pour loss on wax and oil and breakage on glass, add the shared materials across SKUs, and round each to real packs.
Why: A 180 g candle at 8% holds 165.6 g of wax and 14.4 g of oil, and a month that rebuilds or runs down the shelf needs more or fewer candles than it sold.
Method: Sold → shelf correction → QC and rejects → BOM × loss → sum shared materials → packs. In steady months, use the per-candle-sold conversion card. Forecast per SKU when last month is not a good guide.
Units sold are not units to make: three SKUs, one month Example: 180 g fill in the 200 ml Salsa jar · Natural Soy Pearl at 8% · finished-stock target = a quarter of a month's sales SOLD ± SHELF TO MAKE + QC, ÷ REJECTS POURED WAX ×1.03 OIL ×1.03 130 +8 138 +4 → ÷0.96 148 25,244 g 2,195.1 g 95 -6 89 +4 → ÷0.96 97 16,545 g 1,438.7 g 75 +9 84 +4 → ÷0.96 92 15,692 g 1,364.5 g Rows, top to bottom: Roasted Coffee · Citrus Lemon · Cinnamon Vanilla. ± shelf = target finished stock − finished stock on hand. The shortcut: 300 sold × 180 g = 54,000 g of wax. The candles that were sold held 49,680 g of wax; the month you actually need to pour — after shelf stock, QC, rejects and loss — is 57,481 g.
One month, three SKUs: units sold are corrected for the finished stock you want to hold, then QC candles and a reject allowance turn units to make into candles to pour, and only then do grams of wax and oil appear. The example figures are illustrative — replace them with your own sales and shelf counts.
Straight answer
I know my monthly candle sales — how do I convert units sold into monthly requirements for wax, fragrance oils, wicks and jars?
Correct each SKU's sales for the shelf, turn "to make" into "to pour" with QC candles and a reject allowance, multiply by the per-candle BOM, and add the shared materials across SKUs. To make = sold + the finished stock you want to start next month with − what is on the shelf today. To pour = (to make + QC candles) ÷ (1 − reject rate). Then wax = poured × wax per candle × (1 + pour loss), and the same for oil; wicks = poured; jars = poured × (1 + breakage). On this page's example — 300 candles sold, 180 g fills, Natural Soy Pearl at 8%, 4 QC candles per SKU, 4% rejects, 3% loss, 2% breakage — the month needs 337 poured candles, 57,481 g of wax, 4,998 g of oil across three fragrances, 337 wicks and 344 jars: ₹57,960.80 in real CSI packs. In a steady month the shortcut is 177.68 g of wax and 15.45 g of oil per candle sold.
One line: sold + shelf target − shelf today, plus QC, divided by yield, times the BOM — then packs.
For the example month on this page — 300 candles sold, 180 g fills, Natural Soy Pearl at 8% — the requirement is 57,481 g of wax, 4,998 g of oil across three fragrances, 337 wicks and 344 jars, priced to ₹57,960.80 in real CSI packs. The shared line is the cheapest container soy we list per kilo: Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹4,248.00 for 10 kg.

Why units sold are not the number you buy for

Sales tell you what left the shelf. A raw-material requirement has to say what must be poured to refill it.

Monthly sales are the best number most small candle businesses have, and they are the right starting point. But three gaps sit between "we sold 300 candles last month" and a wax order. The first is the shelf: if you finished the month with fewer candles in stock than you want to start the next one with, you must make more than you sell; if you over-poured last month, you make fewer. The second is yield: some poured candles are pulled for quality control and some fail. The third is formula: a sold candle is wax and oil together, so a 180 g candle holds 165.6 g of wax and 14.4 g of oil at 8%, not 180 g of wax.

Get those three right and the conversion is mechanical. Skip them and you get one of two familiar months: the one where you run out of Citrus Lemon on day 22, or the one where a 10 kg bag sits unopened because the shelf was already full. This page works one example through, SKU by SKU, and ends with a conversion card you can reuse every month. Its sibling 500 candles across five SKUs takes the next step — forecasting the month ahead per SKU rather than reusing last month — and 20% monthly growth handles a sales line that will not sit still.

The CSI principle
To make = sold + target shelf − shelf today. To pour = (to make + QC) ÷ (1 − rejects). Material = poured × BOM × (1 + loss).
Three lines, applied per SKU, then added up per material. Everything else on this page is those lines with numbers in.

Step 1: correct sales for the shelf

The example business sold 130 Roasted Coffee, 95 Citrus Lemon and 75 Cinnamon Vanilla candles last month. It wants to start each month holding about a quarter of a month's sales as finished stock (a labelled example — roughly a week of cover; pick your own figure). Today the shelf holds 25, 30 and 10. So Coffee needs 33 on the shelf and has 25: make 130 + 33 − 25 = 138. Citrus Lemon is over-stocked: 95 + 24 − 30 = 89, fewer than it sold. Cinnamon Vanilla is short: 84.

Reader's example sales and shelf counts · target closing stock 25% of monthly sales (example) · replace with yours
Units sold → units to make, per SKU
SKU Sold last month Target shelf Shelf today To make vs sold
Roasted Coffee 130 33 25 138 +8
Citrus Lemon 95 24 30 89 -6
Cinnamon Vanilla 75 19 10 84 +9
Total 300 76 65 311 +11

If you do not hold finished stock — you pour to order or sell everything you make within days — set the target and today's shelf both to zero and "to make" equals "sold". The rest of the method is unchanged. If you sell through a marketplace that holds your stock, count what is in their warehouse as shelf. And if last month was unusual (a festival week, a stock-out that capped sales), correct the sales figure before you start: the reorder sheet keeps a three-month average for exactly this reason.

The stock-out trap: "we only sold 95 Citrus Lemon, so we need 95." If Citrus Lemon ran out on day 22, 95 is what you had, not what you could have sold. Ordering to it locks in the shortage. Fix: for any SKU that ran out, estimate lost days and scale up — for example, 95 sold in 22 days is about 130 at the same daily rate for 30 days — then apply the shelf correction. Label the estimate, and check it against next month's real sales.

Step 2: QC and rejects turn "to make" into "to pour"

Every SKU here is poured weekly, and one candle from each weekly pour is kept as a retained QC sample — 4 per SKU per month, a labelled working practice. Rejects (sinkholes you cannot fix, a tilted wick, a chipped rim) are an example 4%. QC candles are whole candles, so they are added first; rejects are a share of what you pour, so you divide. Coffee: (138 + 4) ÷ 0.96 = 147.92 → 148. Citrus Lemon → 97. Cinnamon Vanilla → 92. Total poured: 337 candles to sell 300.

Allowances are labelled working assumptions · QC 4 per SKU · rejects 4% · pour loss 3% on wax and oil · breakage 2% on glass
To pour → material, per SKU
SKU To make Poured Wax (165.6 g × 1.03) Oil (14.4 g × 1.03) Wicks Jars before breakage
Roasted Coffee 138 148 25,244.1 g 2,195.1 g 148 148
Citrus Lemon 89 97 16,545.1 g 1,438.7 g 97 97
Cinnamon Vanilla 84 92 15,692.3 g 1,364.5 g 92 92
Total 311 337 57,481.4 g 4,998.4 g 337 337 × 1.02 → 344

Notice the shape of the result. The wax, wick and jar lines are added across SKUs because every SKU uses the same ones; the oil stays separate because each SKU has its own. That is the general rule for this whole cluster, and the 20-SKU wax post, the one-oil-three-products post and the one-jar-eight-fragrances post each take one material and do it at scale.

The conversion card: material per candle sold

Once the allowances are stable, a month's requirement is units sold times a factor.

If your shelf stays roughly level from month to month, the shelf correction drops out and every material becomes a simple multiplier on units sold. The card below folds the 3% loss, 4% rejects and 2% breakage into one factor per material for a 180 g candle at 8%. QC candles are left out because they are a fixed number per pour, not a share of sales — add them on top.

Steady state · 180 g at 8% · loss 3% · rejects 4% · breakage 2% · factors include allowances, exclude QC candles
Per candle sold: what to buy
Material In the candle Factor Per candle sold For 300 sold
Wax 165.6 g × 1.03 ÷ 0.96 177.68 g 53,302 g
Fragrance oil 14.4 g × 1.03 ÷ 0.96 15.45 g 4,635 g
Wick 1 ÷ 0.96 1.042 312.5
Jar (with cap) 1 × 1.02 ÷ 0.96 1.062 318.8

So every candle sold costs you 177.68 g of wax and 15.45 g of oil to replace, not 180 g. For a steady month of 300 sales with four QC candles per SKU on top, that is about 55,776 g of wax. This example month needs 57,481 g instead, because it is also rebuilding Cinnamon Vanilla's shelf. Keep the card next to your sales report; recompute the factors only when your loss, reject or breakage rates change by more than a point.

Measure your own factors
Weigh the wax you melt and the candles you pour for one month. Pour loss = (wax + oil melted − weight of candles poured) ÷ (wax + oil melted). Rejects = candles failed ÷ candles poured. Breakage = jars broken ÷ jars handled. Three numbers, written on the card, are worth more than any rule of thumb on this page.

Step 3: round to real CSI packs and price it

Now each material is rounded up to the cheapest in-stock combination of CSI packs. The wax is Natural Soy Pearl Wax, the only CSI soy wax with a real bulk break: ₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg — 5.6% less. Natural Soy Pearl's page publishes no fragrance ceiling, melt point or pour temperature, so the 8% here is the reader's own tested formula, not a CSI specification. The jar is the 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with golden lug cap; CSI does not publish its fill weight, so the 180 g is the reader's weighed fill. The wick is Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, the wick that passed the reader's burn tests in this jar.

Boxes, courier, labour — your own figures — — — —

Two rounding details matter here. The wax is 5 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg: Natural Soy Pearl is also listed at 50 kg (₹21,240.00), but at ₹424.80 a kilo it is the same rate as the 10 kg bag, so it only saves handling — and it is in limited stock, so confirm on WhatsApp before planning around it. Rounding up to six 10 kg bags instead would cost ₹25,488.00, ₹774.00 more, for a cleaner shelf. The jars show the one real pack-price step in this order: the Salsa jar is ₹200.60 for 5 (₹40.12 each) but ₹1,475.00 for 50 and ₹2,950.00 for 100 (₹29.50 each). Buying 344 jars in 5-packs would cost ₹13,841.40; in 100s and 50s it costs ₹10,325.00.

At this order's own rates the material cost per candle is ₹165.89 for Roasted Coffee, ₹153.58 for Citrus Lemon and ₹179.19 for Cinnamon Vanilla — wax at ₹0.42/g, oil at the per-gram rate of the packs bought, the ₹12.00 wick and the ₹29.50 jar with its lug cap. Labour, labels, boxes, freight and GST are not included.

Buy now, buy after testing

All three SKUs are established, so their production materials can be bought today. One change is worth testing this month, and it shows how the split works. The Cotton Braided wick is ₹12.00; an Eco Candle Wick Thin C1 is ₹5.90. If an Eco wick passed in the Citrus Lemon candle, that SKU alone would save ₹6.10 a candle — about ₹591.70 on this month's 97 pours. CSI publishes no wick-size-per-diameter chart and no burn data, so that saving is worth nothing until a test says the wick works in this jar.

The split applied to this month · a wick change is a formula change

So this month buys the full Cotton Braided quantity for every SKU, plus one 20-pack of Eco Thin C1 (₹118.00 — the 10-pack was out of stock on the 4 October 2026 re-check) for three Citrus Lemon trial candles poured from the same wax and oil. If they pass a full-life burn against a Cotton Braided control, next month's order switches that SKU. Three wick sizes and their reorder points shows how to carry two wicks in stock without doubling the safety stock.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The Natural Soy Pearl 50 kg bag is our largest wax pack, and it does not save you a rupee over five 10 kg bags — both are ₹424.80 a kilo. The real break is from 1 kg to 5 kg. At this business's volume, buy 10 kg bags; take the 50 kg only if you want fewer bags to handle and have confirmed it is in stock. The same goes for the oils: Roasted Coffee is ₹3.78/g at 500 g and ₹3.74/g at 1 kg — four paise a gram. Volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp and no discount figure is published.

Next month, and where to go from here

Run the same three lines again next month with the new sales figure and the new shelf count. If sales are steady, the conversion card does the work in a minute. If they are not, use a forecast instead of last month's actuals — per-SKU forecasting — or a growth model — ordering for 20% monthly growth. When you want one order a month across every material, the consolidated monthly order brings dyes and moulds in too, and the safety-stock post decides which of these lines must never reach zero. The whole method from formula to order is on the cluster hub.

1
Close the month on the same day every monthPull units sold per SKU from your shop, marketplace and offline sales, and count the finished shelf the same evening. Mark any SKU that ran out and on which day.
2
Correct for stock-outs and unusual weeksScale up any SKU that ran out by the days it was missing; take out one-off bulk orders that will not repeat. Write the corrected figure next to the raw one.
3
Set the shelf target and compute "to make"Sold + target shelf − shelf today, per SKU. A negative number means skip that SKU this month.
4
Add QC, divide by yieldAdd your fixed QC candles per SKU, divide by (1 − your measured reject rate), round up to whole candles.
5
Multiply by the BOM, add up shared materialsWax and oil × (1 + pour loss); jars × (1 + breakage); wicks and stickers one per wick. Add wax, wicks and jars across SKUs; keep each oil separate.
6
Subtract stock, round to packs, split the orderTake off raw materials already on the shelf, round each line up to the cheapest in-stock pack combination, and hold back production quantities of anything still under test.
Sales say what left. The order has to say what refills the shelf, what fails, and what stays in the jug.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We would sell more if every month's order were sized to the biggest sales month you have had. This page sizes it to what you need to pour, shows the leftover on every line, and points out where our largest pack saves nothing.

Soy-wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 4 October 2026. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate raw materials from candle sales?
Per SKU: units to make = units sold + target finished stock − finished stock on hand; units to pour = (units to make + QC candles) ÷ (1 − reject rate); then multiply by the per-candle wax, oil, wick and jar quantities with pour loss on wax and oil and breakage on glass.
How much wax do I need per candle sold?
For a 180 g candle at 8% with 3% pour loss and 4% rejects, 177.68 g of wax and 15.45 g of oil per candle sold. The candle itself holds 165.6 g of wax; the rest is loss and rejects.
Should I order raw materials based on last month's sales?
Only after correcting for the shelf and for any stock-out that capped sales. If sales are changing, use a forecast per SKU (5983) or a growth model (5984).
How much finished candle stock should I keep?
That is your decision; this page uses a quarter of a month's sales as a labelled example. Holding more finished stock means pouring more this month and tying up more cash in finished candles.
Is Natural Soy Pearl cheaper in the 50 kg bag?
No — the 50 kg bag (₹21,240.00) and the 10 kg bag (₹4,248.00) are both ₹424.80 a kilo. The break is from 1 kg (₹450.00) to 5 kg. The 50 kg is listed in limited stock; confirm on WhatsApp.

On CSI's listing the 200 ml Salsa jar is ₹200.60 for 5 (₹40.12 each) and ₹1,475.00 for 50 (₹29.50 each). For production volumes, buy 50s and 100s.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range. The sales-to-requirement method applies to raw materials from any supplier.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle weight (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Allowances are applied in one order — test candles as whole candles, reject allowance by dividing by (1 − reject rate), pour loss on wax and oil only, breakage on glass only, then rounding up to listed in-stock CSI packs — and no allowance is applied twice. The 180 g fill in the 200 ml Salsa jar is the reader's weighed fill; CSI publishes no jar internal diameters or fill weights except the Golden Aluminium Tin (85 g) and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar (50 g wax capacity), no wick-size-per-diameter chart, no throw or burn-test data, no lead times, no volume discount and no 25 kg or 100 kg pack; container soy bags stop at 10 kg and Natural Soy Pearl goes to 50 kg. Natural Soy Pearl has no fragrance ceiling, melt point, pour temperature or shelf life published; the 8% load is the reader's tested formula. The sales, shelf counts, 25% shelf target, QC candles, 4% rejects, 3% pour loss, 2% breakage and ₹7.00 labels are labelled examples. Material costs exclude packaging, labour, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
