When one wick is slightly small and the next clearly too big, the answer is rarely one of the two. Prove the small one is small, then test a different construction; CSI has no tabbed half-step, and another series can be the honest answer.
No half-step
CSI lists no sized, tabbed wick between its rungs · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
One wick is slightly too small and the next is clearly too big. Should I test another wick series instead of choosing between them? Often, yes, but not first. Re-test the smaller wick with strict method; many "slightly small" results are a short session, a long trim or a draught. If it is still small, test a different construction (two smaller wicks, or a braided series cut to length) rather than forcing one of the two sizes.

Is there a CSI wick in between? No. CSI lists no sized, tabbed wick between Eco C1 and C2, or between C2 and Cotton Braided. The braided rolls are unsized and cut to length, so they are a new series to test, not a half-step. We would rather say that than sell you a guess.

What should I not do? Choose the big one and trim it hard, or choose the small one and push the load past a ceiling. Neither makes an in-between wick; both change something you then can't separate from the wick.

What does it cost? Stage 1 is two candles on the rung you have (₹538.96 of materials). Stage 2 is six candles on two C1 and a braided-roll wick (₹1,616.86 used), 300 g at 8% in a 9 cm jar.
The short answer
The verdict: don't pick between a slightly small and a clearly big wick. Prove the small one is really small, then test a different construction.
Stage 1: two candles on the small rung with the method tightened. Ring gone by burn 3? You were never between rungs.
Stage 2: two new constructions, three candles each: two Eco C1, and a braided-roll wick cut to your jar. Judge at burn 3 and at halfway, then full life.
The honest limit: CSI has no tabbed size between its rungs. If neither construction works, another supplier's series with finer steps may be the right answer.
Between two rungs: what each option costs per candle Wick cost per 300 g candle at CSI prices, 29 September 2026. Cut wicks at a worked-example 12 cm each. Bars show price only. Wick cost per candle for each way of landing between two rungs, at CSI prices on 29 September 2026. The two black bars are the rungs you have already tested; the others are different geometries, series or constructions. Price says nothing about where an option burns. The 12 cm cut length is a worked example; set yours by your jar's height.
Straight answer
I'm testing a wide jar and one wick size seems slightly too small while the next is clearly too large. Should I test another wick series rather than choosing between the two?
Don't choose between them, and don't jump to a new series yet. First, re-test the smaller wick with the method tightened: consistent trim, full 3–4 hour sessions, still air, a centred wick, the same cure. A surprising number of "slightly small" wicks pass once the sessions are long enough. If it is still small, you are genuinely between two rungs, and the useful next step is a different construction rather than a compromise: in a wide jar, two smaller wicks (two Eco C1 in place of one C2), or a braided wick cut to length from a roll. Test them as separate arms, three candles each, judged at burn 3 and at halfway. Be clear about CSI's range: there is no sized, tabbed wick between Eco C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, and the braided rolls state no size, so they are a new series rather than a half-step. If neither construction closes the gap, a supplier with a finer-stepped series may have the wick your candle needs; that is a better answer than trimming a big wick hard or pushing the fragrance load.
One line: prove the small rung is small, then test a different construction; CSI has no tabbed half-step, and another series can be the honest answer.
Stage 1 needs nothing new if you hold the oil, wax, jars and the small rung. For stage 2: Eco C1 20 (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock) and the Braided Wick Roll (₹706.82). Without the roll arm, stage 2 costs ₹1,902.80 from nothing.
Eco C1 — ₹118.00 for 20

Why the step you want isn't on the shelf

A wick range is a ladder with missing rungs. Every supplier's ladder is missing different ones.

Wick series are sold in steps. A finer-stepped series gives you more chances that one step fits your jar, wax, oil and load; a short range gives you fewer. CSI's range is short, and this page is where we say so plainly: the tabbed Eco wicks come as Thin (C1) and Thick (C2), then Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made, whose page says "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2, and none between C2 and Cotton Braided. Two cut-to-length options (the Braided Wick Roll and Eco Braided Wicks) and one wooden wick complete the list, and none of their pages states a size.

So "slightly small then clearly too big" is a predictable result on a short ladder, especially in wide jars. In the worked example it is a 9 cm jar (8.3 cm inside on our assumed 0.35 cm wall, a 54.11 cm² pool): one Eco C2 leaves a thin ring that never quite closes, and one Cotton Braided runs a tall flame, mushrooms and pools deep by halfway. The oil is Japanese Cherry Blossom at 8% in CSI 464, 300 g (24 g of oil and 276 g of wax).

When a bracket has a documented fail on both sides, the bracket-closure post calls it closed. Here it is closed with no winner, which is a different situation: the answer lies in the gap, and the gap has to be approached with a different tool.

Mistake: choosing the big rung and "controlling it" by trimming short, or choosing the small rung and "helping it" with a higher load. What happens: a hard-trimmed big wick commonly grows back within the session, and the heat it brings later is still there at halfway; a higher load on a small wick commonly makes its flame smaller, not bigger (a tendency). Fix: trim and load are routine and recipe, not wick sizes. Keep them fixed while you test constructions.

Stage 1: prove "slightly small" isn't method

Before you look for a half-size wick, check that your sessions weren't half-length.

"Slightly small" is a verdict often caused by the test rather than the wick. A 2-hour session in a jar that needs about 3.3 hours by the rough one-hour-per-2.5 cm rule, a wick left long and sooty, a ceiling fan, a wick 3 mm off centre: each of these can leave a thin ring that looks like a size problem. So stage 1 costs almost nothing and comes first.

1
Write down what "slightly small" and "clearly too big" meantThe ring width at burn 3 at four points, flame height, depth and soot for each rung, and the session length. Without numbers, "slightly" can't be tested again.
2
Re-run the small rung with the method tightenedTwo candles, same wax lot, oil and load, fill, jar and cure. Trim to about 5–6 mm before every session (one CSI trimmer page says 1/4 inch), burn a full 3–4 hours in still air, check centring after the pour.
3
Read stage 1 before buying anythingIf the ring now closes by burn 3, you were never between rungs. If it still stays, move to stage 2.
4
Stage 2: two new constructions, three candles eachTwo Eco C1 at a measured spacing (the cluster's labelled start is 4.15 cm, the inside radius), and one braided-roll wick cut to your jar. Keep oil, load, wax, fill, cure and room identical.
5
Judge at burn 3 and at halfway, then full lifeA candidate must reach the glass by burn 3 and stay calm at halfway; then it burns to about 1 cm left before approval.
6
Only then touch load or fillIf neither construction closes the gap, try a labelled load arm or fill arm, one at a time, never together with a wick change.

Stage 1 uses 48 g of oil and 552 g of wax: ₹538.96 in materials, or ₹871.80 in cash if you are starting from nothing (a 50 g bottle of Japanese Cherry Blossom, a 1 kg bag of CSI 464 and a C2 10-pack). If the small rung passes, it goes on to the full-life test and you buy nothing else.

Eight ways to land between two rungs

None of these is a half-size wick. Each changes something else, and that is why each needs its own arm.
In-between options · without inventing sizes
Worked example: one Eco C2 slightly small, one Cotton Braided clearly too big, 9 cm jar · judgement, labelled
Option What changes What it can fix Cost Use when
1. Re-run the small rung, strictly Trim to about 5–6 mm, full 3–4 h sessions, still air, wick centred, cure identical Whether "slightly small" was the method, not the wick Nothing new; two candles First, always
2. Two Eco C1 instead of one C2 Two small flames on a line at a measured spacing Coverage across the width with less heat per flame ₹11.80 a candle Wide jars where one wick almost reaches
3. Load, within both ceilings A small step down on the small rung, or up on the big one (never past 10% on CSI 464) A nudge in flame size (tendency), plus throw and cost 8% → 6% saves ₹30.00; 8% → 10% adds ₹30.00 a candle Only as a labelled arm, never mixed with a wick change
4. Fill height More headspace above the wax Rim soot and a flame close to the rim or lid early in life Less wax per candle; a new net weight Only if the big rung's fault is at the top of the jar
5. Braided Wick Roll, cut to length A different braided series, cut and tabbed yourself Unknown until burned: the listing states no size ₹7.07 a tabbed wick A separate arm, labelled as a new series
6. Eco Braided Wicks (5 m), cut "For large diameter container jars"; no size or tabs stated Unknown until burned ₹11.51 a 12 cm wick, plus a tab A separate arm if the roll fails
7. A wooden wick A different construction: one listing, no widths A different flame, not a step ₹59.00 a wick Its own requalification (the wooden-wick post)
8. Another supplier's series Finer, numbered steps in one construction The true in-between size, if one exists for your candle Their price When 1–5 don't close the gap

The order matters. Option 1 is nearly free and often settles it. Options 2 and 5 change the construction while keeping cotton, and they are the pair we test in stage 2. Option 3, the fragrance load, is a nudge with side effects: Japanese Cherry Blossom's page states "6-13% for candles", but CSI 464's page says up to 10%, and the lower ceiling governs, so the lever runs from 6% to 10% on CSI's total-weight convention (9% if you read the wax ceiling on wax weight). A lower load on the small rung saves ₹30.00 of oil a candle and may let the flame burn a little more freely; a higher load on the big rung costs ₹30.00 more and may calm it. Both change throw, and both are tendencies, so they are labelled arms of their own. The load-versus-performance question in general belongs to the formulation series (the 8%-beats-10% post).

Option 4 is narrower than it looks. Fill height doesn't make a wick bigger or smaller, and the pool still meets the same diameter. What more headspace can change is the top of the candle's life: a flame near the rim, soot on the lid. If the big rung's only fault is there, a lower fill is worth one labelled arm; if its fault is heat at halfway, fill height is not the fix. A lower fill also changes your net weight and price.

Two C1 are not "C1.5"
It is tempting to think of two small wicks as a medium one. They aren't: two flames on a line reach the wall along that line quickly and the wall at right angles to it more slowly, and each flame draws less fuel. In a wide jar that can be exactly the in-between you need; in a narrow one it can be too much. The spacing geometry for a 9 cm pair is the placement post.

What each option costs per candle

Price per wick tells you what a test costs. It never tells you where the wick burns.

The chart above compares the wick cost per candle. Every candle in the worked example also carries ₹120.00 of oil and ₹140.04 of wax (₹260.04 together), so a three-candle arm costs:

Cost of a three-candle arm, by option
300 g at 8% Japanese Cherry Blossom (₹5.00/g) · CSI 464 at the 1 kg price · wick at the pack price · jars excluded · CSI live pricing, 29 September 2026
Arm Wick per candle Three candles, materials
One Eco C2 (the small rung) ₹9.44 ₹808.45
One Cotton Braided (the big rung) ₹12.00 ₹816.13
Two Eco C1 ₹11.80 ₹815.53
Braided Wick Roll, cut ₹7.07 ₹801.33
Eco Braided, cut (tab not included) ₹11.51 ₹814.66
One wooden wick ₹59.00 ₹957.13

Two things follow. The wick is a small share of any arm, except the wooden one; the oil and wax make up most of the cost of a test. And the braided roll's low per-wick figure is only true at scale: to test three wicks you buy the whole roll, and ₹685.62 of it sits on the shelf unless that series passes.

Argued against our own interest: if you already own a braided spool, from us or anyone else, use it for the stage-2 braided arm and don't buy the roll to test three wicks. And if your stage-1 re-test passes, the right purchase is nothing at all.

Stage 2: the in-between round

Two new constructions, three candles each, one control you already know. Six candles decide it.

If stage 1 confirms the small rung is small, pour six candles from one batch: three on two Eco C1 at a measured spacing (the cluster's labelled starting point is 4.15 cm, the inside radius; each wick then serves about 27.05 cm²) and three on a braided-roll wick cut to your jar. Your stage-1 C2 candles are the control. CSI 464's page states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C"; your 9 cm jar isn't a CSI listing, so pour at the low end and pre-warm clean jars (our judgement). The Japanese Cherry Blossom page states no cure time in the text we captured; the 25 of 102 CSI oil pages that do say 48–72 hours for soy, and many makers wait about a week.

When the right answer is another series

Sometimes the most useful thing a supplier can tell you is where its range stops.

If stage 1 confirms the gap and neither stage-2 construction fills it, you have learned something real: your candle needs a wick that CSI's short range doesn't list. At that point a series with finer, numbered steps in one construction, from another supplier, is the sensible next test. Bracket it the same way: a documented fail on each side and a candidate between, judged at burn 3, halfway and full life.

Argued against our own interest: we would rather you bought the one wick that makes your candle work from someone else than a second pack of ours that doesn't. Send us your two rungs and results; if we have or plan anything in between, we will say so, and if we don't, we will say that too.

Before you change series, change nothing else: same wax lot, oil, load, fill, jar batch and room. A new series tested in a new wax is two changes, and you will not be able to tell which one fixed the candle.

What to buy, and what to skip

Five items for stage 2, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing is ranked on burn results. Oil candles are counted at 24 g (300 g fill) and 12 g (150 g).

Braided Wick Roll with 100 wick tabs (61 meters)
The second stage-2 arm. The page describes "a long spool of braided cotton wick, ideal for creating custom-sized wicks", with "100 Wick Tabs", and says you can "cut the wick to the desired length for your specific candle container size". In the text we captured it states no wick size, so it is a new series to test, not a step between C2 and Cotton Braided. At 12 cm a wick, 100 wicks use about 12 m of the 61 m, so the tabs run out first: ₹7.07 a tabbed wick. Argued against our own interest: the roll is ₹706.82 to test three wicks; if you already have a braided spool from any supplier, test that first.

For the two-C1 arm. The page describes "natural fibers like cotton and paper" and states no size or jar range in the text we captured. Two C1 are not "C1.5": they are two smaller flames on a line, which in a wide jar can cover the width with less heat per flame. Japanese Cherry Blossom Fragrance Oil
The worked example's oil, chosen because its page states a range that runs past the wax: "6-13% for candles". On CSI 464, whose page states up to 10%, the lower figure governs (the two-ceilings rule). The wax page does not say whether its 10% is of total or of wax weight; read on wax weight it allows 9.09% of total, so a top rung of 9% satisfies both readings. That matters for option 3: load is only a lever inside 6–10% here. Notes: "sweet cherry and soft pink petals opening into a rose and jasmine heart, grounded by warm sandalwood and musk". The CSI principle
Between two rungs, change the construction, not the rules.
Prove the small wick is small, then test two small wicks or a new series. Never trim a big wick into a medium one or load a small one into a bigger flame; and if our range stops short, say so and look further.
"There is no half-size wick hiding in a trimmer or a fragrance bottle."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, oil and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that our range has no tabbed size between its rungs, that another supplier's series may be the answer, and that you shouldn't buy a roll to test three wicks if you already own a spool.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged where it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Wick, oil, load and temperature wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The two-stage plan, the pass lines, the 12 cm cut length, the 0.35 cm wall, the 300 g fill and the worked example's readings are our judgement or worked examples; flame and pool behaviour are described as common tendencies; CSI publishes no wick-performance data. Frequently asked questions

What do I do if one wick size is too small and the next is too big?
First re-test the smaller one with strict method (trim, session length, still air, centring); many "slightly small" results are method. If it is still small, test a different construction, such as two smaller wicks or another wick series, rather than forcing one of the two sizes.
Is there a wick size between C1 and C2 at CSI?
No. CSI lists no sized, tabbed wick between Eco C1 and C2, or between C2 and Cotton Braided. The braided rolls are cut to length with no size stated, so they are a separate series to test, not an in-between size.
Can I use two small wicks instead of one medium wick?
In a wide jar, often yes: two small flames spread over a line can cover the width with less heat per flame. It changes the geometry, so it needs its own test at a measured spacing, through to about 1 cm left.
Can changing fragrance load fix a wick that is slightly too small?
Load nudges the flame (higher loads commonly make it smaller or sootier) but it also changes throw and cost, and it must stay within both the wax and oil page ceilings. Test it as its own labelled arm, never alongside a wick change.
Should I switch wick brands if my sizes don't fit?
If a strict re-test and a different construction don't close the gap, yes: another series with finer steps may have the size your candle needs. Tell us what you found; we would rather you had a candle that works.
How do I cut wicks from a braided wick roll?
Cut each to the jar's height plus a little for trimming (our worked example uses 12 cm for a jar about 10 cm tall), attach a tab, and record the length. The listing states no size, so treat the result as a new series.
Before you choose between two wrong wicks
Re-test the small one strictly; then test two C1 and a braided-roll wick.
Two candles to prove "slightly small", six to test two new constructions, all judged at burn 3 and at halfway. If nothing closes the gap, CSI's range stops there, and we will tell you so. Send us your results on WhatsApp.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on 8.5–9 cm wide jars (4241–4260). It answers one situation: in a wide jar, one wick is slightly too small and the next clearly too big. It covers why CSI's range has no tabbed half-step, a stage-1 method re-test, eight in-between options that invent no sizes, per-candle and per-arm costs, a stage-2 round with two new constructions, and when another series is the honest answer.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (300 g at 8% = 24 g oil + 276 g wax; the standard 150 g candle at 8% = 12 g). The 300 g fill, the 0.35 cm wall, the 4.15 cm pair spacing, the 12 cm cut length and the rung readings are worked-example assumptions; CSI lists no 9 cm jar and states no size for its braided rolls or wooden wick. Ceilings are as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Japanese Cherry Blossom 6–13% for candles, so CSI 464's 10% governs): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Melt-pool times (about an hour per 2.5 cm), depth (about 0.5–1 cm) and flame height (about 2.5–5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging, jars and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
