Bulk fragrance · acceptance test
The client approved a candle made from a small bottle. You are about to pour hundreds more from a bulk delivery. A short, structured comparison between the two is the cheapest protection on the order.
₹895.92
three test candles to compare the bulk oil with the approved sample, against about ₹98,146.00 committed to a 300-candle order (0.91%) · CSI live pricing + example labour, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I test bulk fragrance oil against my original sample? Yes, every time the order matters. Compare the label, the look of the oil, smell strips and test candles made exactly like the approved one, before production starts. On a 300-candle order, the test costs about ₹895.92 against roughly ₹98,146.00 committed.

What if I used up the original sample? Then the approved candle is your reference, if you still have it. Next time, keep back at least 16 g of the sample oil, enough for one reference candle, sealed and labelled in a cool, dark place. Buying the sample as 50 g rather than 15 g makes that easy.

Can bulk fragrance smell different from the sample? It can, for several reasons: an aged or warm-stored sample, a different production lot, a test candle made differently from the approved one, or simply a tired nose. CSI does not publish lot information, so the side-by-side comparison is how you find out.

What do I do if they don't match? Stop before production. Re-check that the test candles were made identically. If the difference remains, message CSI on WhatsApp with the product, bottle details, photos and what you observed, and resolve it before pouring the order.
The short answer
Checks: 1 Label and seal · 2 Colour and clarity side by side · 3 Smell strips at fresh, 15 minutes and 1 hour · 4 Test candles with the same wax, wick, jar, load and cure.
Cost: Two bulk test candles at ₹295.30 and one reference at ₹305.32: ₹895.92, or 0.91% of a ₹98,146.00 order.
Order: 300 × 200 g at 8% Raat Ki Rani needs 4.992 kg with allowance: 5 × 1 kg for ₹33,870.00.

Approved sample vs bulk delivery — four checks before a single production candle Retained approved sample 34 g of the 50 g kept back Bulk delivery 5 × 1 kg · bottles numbered 1 · Label and seal name, size, bottle count 2 · Look colour and clarity, side by side 3 · Smell strips fresh, 15 min, 1 hour 4 · Test candles same wax, wick, jar, load, cure Gate Pass → produce Doubt → WhatsApp first Test cost about ₹895.92 · money committed to the 300-candle order about ₹98,146.00 (materials + example labour) Lot and batch information is not published — the comparison is yours to make
The retained approved sample and the bulk delivery go through the same four checks side by side. Only when all four agree does the oil move to production. If any check raises a doubt, message CSI on WhatsApp with the details before a single production jar is poured. The test costs about ₹895.92. Finding a mismatch after pouring would cost the order.
Straight answer
I need several kilograms of one fragrance for a corporate order — should I test the bulk batch against my original sample before production?
Yes. On any order where the client approved a specific scent, test the bulk oil against the approved sample before a single production candle is poured. The example is 300 × 200 g candles in Raat Ki Rani Fragrance Oil at 8%, which needs 4.992 kg with allowance, bought as 5 × 1 kg for ₹33,870.00. With wax, jars, wicks and example labour, about ₹98,146.00 is committed. The check has four steps. First, confirm the label and seals. Second, compare the colour and clarity side by side. Third, compare smell strips when fresh, at 15 minutes and at one hour. Fourth, pour test candles made exactly like the approved one, with the same wax, wick, jar, load and cure, and score them blind against a reference. The test costs about ₹895.92, or 0.91% of the order. It only works if you kept a reference, so buy the sample as 50 g and keep at least 16 g sealed. CSI does not publish lot information, so this comparison is yours to make. If anything is in doubt, message us on WhatsApp before production.
One line: keep 16 g of the approved sample, compare it with the bulk oil four ways, and pour nothing until they match.
Start the order the right way round. Buy the approval sample as 50 g of Raat Ki Rani (₹370.00) rather than 15 g (₹130.00), so that 34 g remains after the approval candle to serve as the reference. Then order the bulk: 5 × 1 kg for ₹33,870.00. The 500 g and 1 kg cost the same per gram, ₹6.77.

Why bulk and sample can differ

Most mismatches between a sample and a bulk order aren't mysteries. They are one of four ordinary things, and a test tells you which.

The example is a corporate client who approved a Raat Ki Rani candle in July, from a small bottle, and has now ordered 300 × 200 g candles in White Matte Glass Jars with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 8%. Several months and one bulk delivery separate the approval from production. Here is what can change in that gap, in general candle-making practice:

General practice — CSI does not publish lot, batch or ageing data for its oils
Four reasons a bulk oil can seem different from the sample
Cause What happens How the test catches it
The sample has aged A small bottle opened often, or stored somewhere warm, can drift from how it smelled when fresh Compare the sample's smell strip with the bulk strip. An aged sample often smells flatter or sharper than the fresh bulk
A different production lot Fragrance oils are made in batches, and slight differences between batches are possible Colour, strips and test candles side by side
A different candle The approval candle used another wax, wick, load, jar or cure time Rebuild the reference candle exactly, and make the bulk test candles the same way
A tired nose After smelling one scent for a while, the nose adapts and comparisons become unreliable Blind scoring by two or three people, with fresh air between rounds

Only one of those four is about the supplier. The other three are about your own reference and your method. That is why the test has to be structured. Without it you can't tell a genuine difference from a stale sample or a candle that was made differently.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. It would be easier for us to tell you that bulk oil always matches the sample exactly and you can pour straight away. We don't publish lot data, and a 300-candle corporate order is too important to take on trust from anyone, us included. Test it. If our oil and your sample don't agree, we would much rather hear about it from your test candles than from your client.

Keep a reference you can test against

The test depends on something most makers throw away: the rest of the sample. A 15 g bottle scents less than one 200 g candle at 8%, since the candle needs 16 g. Once the approval candle is poured, nothing is left to compare with. That is why the sample size matters on an order like this:

Raat Ki Rani · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · 200 g candle at 8% = 16 g
Which sample size leaves you a reference
Sample bought Price Per gram After one approval candle Enough for a reference candle?
15 g ₹130.00 ₹8.67 Not enough for even one 200 g candle No — the approved candle itself becomes the only reference
50 g ₹370.00 ₹7.40 34 g left Yes — two reference candles
100 g ₹700.00 ₹7.00 84 g left Yes — and enough for a second client round

For a corporate or wedding order, the 50 g sample is the sensible buy: ₹240.00 more than the 15 g, and it leaves 34 g to test against. Seal the remainder in a small glass bottle, label it with the product name, the date and "approved sample, client X", and store it cool and dark. Keep the approved candle as well, unburned and lidded. Together they are your reference. Ask for the documents at the same time
When you order the bulk oil, ask on WhatsApp for the IFRA certificate and the MSDS for the product. Check that the product name on them matches the listing you ordered. Corporate buyers increasingly ask for them, and it is easier to have them before the order ships than after. We don't publish individual oils' IFRA percentages or flash points on this page, so ask for the certificate rather than relying on a number from memory.

The four checks

1
1 · Label, seal and countOn arrival, check that every bottle carries the product name you ordered and the size you paid for, and that the seals are intact. Number the bottles (1–5) with a marker. Photograph the labels. If anything is wrong at this stage, stop and message us.
2
2 · LookPour a little of the sample and a little from bulk bottle 1 into two identical clear glasses. Compare colour and clarity against a white sheet, in daylight. Fragrance oils can vary in colour between batches without the scent changing, so a colour difference is a reason to look harder, not proof of a fault. Note what you see.
3
3 · Smell stripsDip two strips of plain white paper to the same depth, one in the sample and one in the bulk. Label them. Smell them fresh, then again at 15 minutes and at one hour, stepping outside between rounds to reset your nose. Different parts of a fragrance show up at different times, and a mismatch that appears at one hour is still a mismatch. Repeat with a second bulk bottle if you have several.
4
4 · Test candlesPour one reference candle from the retained sample and two test candles from bulk bottles, for example bottles 1 and 5. Use exactly the production wax, wick, jar and 8% load, and cool and cure them together. Materials cost ₹305.32 for the reference and ₹295.30 for each bulk candle, ₹895.92 in total. Then score them blind (next section).

Steps 1 to 3 take an hour on the day the oil arrives, and they catch obvious problems before you have spent anything more. Step 4 takes as long as your cure, which isn't published for these waxes, so use the cure you will use in production. That time has to be in the schedule. I've Received My First Large Corporate Candle Order — Which Raw Materials Have the Longest Lead Times and Should be Secured First? explains why the bulk oil should arrive early enough to test, and I Have a Large Candle Order with a Strict Delivery Date — How Much Extra Raw-Material Inventory Should I Keep in Case of Rejects or Supplier Delays? builds the test pour into a backward plan from the delivery date.

The blind scoring sheet

If you know which candle is which, you will find the difference you expect. Label the jars underneath with a letter and let someone else keep the key.
Print one per scorer · candles labelled A, B, C underneath · key kept by someone not scoring
Scoring sheet — bulk vs approved sample
Check A B C Notes
Lid-off smell (cold): same as the approved candle? 1 = very different, 5 = identical
Smell after 1 hour burning in a closed room, 1–5
Strength: weaker / same / stronger than the approved candle
Character: anything missing or new? (describe)
Surface and colour of the wax: any visible difference?
Would you accept this as the client's candle? Yes / No

Use two or three scorers if you can: yourself, someone who hasn't smelled the scent all week, and ideally someone from the client's side. Score the cold smell first and burn afterwards. Air the room between rounds. When the key is revealed, the bulk candles should score close to the reference. If one bulk candle scores clearly lower on "same as approved" across all scorers, that bottle, or the batch, needs a closer look.

The CSI principle
The reference must be made the same way as the test, or the test proves nothing.
Same wax, same wick, same jar, same 8% load, same pour temperature, same cure, same shelf. The only thing that should differ between the reference candle and the bulk candles is which bottle the oil came from.

The gate: pass, doubt or fail

Decide in advance what each result means, so the decision isn't made under deadline pressure:

Decision rules — agree them before the test, not after
What each outcome means for production
Result What you saw What to do
Pass All four checks agree; blind scores for bulk within a point of the reference Release the oil to production. File the scoring sheets with the order.
Doubt One check differs (for example, a colour shift) but scent scores agree Repeat step 3 with a fresh nose. If scent still agrees, proceed and note the difference. If unsure, ask us on WhatsApp first.
Fail Scent scores clearly lower for bulk across scorers, or a missing or new note is noticed by more than one person Do not pour. Re-check that the candles were made identically. Then message CSI with the product, bottle numbers, photos and the scoring results.
Reference suspect The retained sample itself smells aged or flat next to the approved candle Compare the bulk with the approved candle instead, and check with the client if needed.
The test done after production started. A maker pours the first 60 candles on delivery day, to save time, and smells the difference only when the cured candles are lined up at the end of the week. Sixty jars, labels and hours are now at stake, and the delivery date hasn't moved. Fix: the gate sits before the first production pour. If the schedule has no room for a test cure, the schedule is wrong, not the test.
A test candle costs a few hundred rupees. Finding the mismatch in candle 300 costs the order.

Put the numbers side by side. The three test candles cost ₹895.92. The 300-candle order commits ₹93,646.00 of materials plus example labour of ₹4,500.00, about ₹98,146.00 in all. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier can easily say that its bulk oil always matches its samples. We don't publish lot data, so this page gives you a way to check for yourself, and asks you to tell us if anything doesn't match, before it reaches your client.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Order quantities are the cheapest whole-pack combinations. Test-candle and exposure figures are arithmetic, shown to two decimals.

The causes of mismatch, the smell-strip timings and the scoring method are general practice, not CSI measurements. The labour figure and allowances are examples or working assumptions. We don't publish individual oils' IFRA percentages or flash points. Ask for the IFRA certificate and MSDS, or report a mismatch, on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test if a bulk fragrance oil matches the sample?
Four checks, side by side: label and seals; colour and clarity in two clear glasses; smell strips at fresh, 15 minutes and 1 hour; and test candles made exactly like the approved one (same wax, wick, jar, load and cure), scored blind against a reference candle from the retained sample.
Why does my fragrance oil smell different from the sample?
Common reasons are an aged or warm-stored sample, a different production lot, a test candle made differently from the approved one, or nose fatigue. A structured side-by-side test separates these. If the difference persists, message the supplier with details before production.
How much fragrance oil should I keep as a sample?
At least enough for one reference candle. For a 200 g candle at 8%, that is 16 g. Buying the approval sample as 50 g (Raat Ki Rani ₹370.00) leaves 34 g after the approval candle. A 15 g sample doesn't cover even one candle of that size.
Does CSI provide batch numbers for fragrance oils?
Lot or batch information isn't published on CSI's listings. For a bulk order, ask on WhatsApp for the IFRA certificate and MSDS, and raise any question about matching a previous order there before production.
How long does it take to test a fragrance oil before production?
The label, look and smell-strip checks take about an hour on arrival. Test candles take your normal cure time, which isn't published for these waxes, plus a burn session. Build those days into the schedule before the first production pour.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 300 candles?
For 200 g candles at 8%, 16 g each, which is 4.8 kg. With a 4% allowance (working assumption) that is 4.992 kg, bought as 5 × 1 kg of Raat Ki Rani for ₹33,870.00.
Test before you pour
Keep 16 g of the approved sample, compare it four ways with the bulk oil, and pour nothing until they agree.
