I Use 500 g of One Fragrance Oil Every Month — When Should I Stop Buying 100 g Bottles and Move to 500 g or 1 Kg Packs?
Share
Does the 500 g save money? It depends on the oil. Of 62 oils with both sizes in stock, 31 cost within 1% per gram at 500 g and 100 g, and 16 save 5% or more. Mango Coconut saves ₹518.00 a month at your usage; Lavender saves ₹80.00.
Should I go straight to 1 kg? Only if the kilo is cheaper per gram for your oil or you want two months of stock. A 1 kg every two months doubles your average stock to 500 g. For Lavender that costs ₹19.51 a month extra at an example 1.5% holding rate, against a saving of ₹9.50.
Is 1 kg ever worse than 500 g? Yes. Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood list 500 g at ₹2,584.20 and 1 kg at ₹6,867.60. Two 500 g bottles cost ₹1,699.20 less than the kilo. See pack traps.
Why 500 g costs no extra shelf space
Makers hesitate over the 500 g because it feels like committing to a scent. But if you already buy five 100 g bottles of the same oil every month, you have already committed. The only difference is how many bottles the oil comes in. When you use the oil steadily, stock on your shelf falls from 500 g on delivery day to nothing at the end of the month, whichever bottles it arrived in. On average you hold 250 g. That average is what your cash is tied up in, and it is the same under both habits.
There is a version of the 100 g habit that holds less stock: buying one 100 g bottle every six days or so. That keeps only about 50 g on the shelf on average, but it means five orders a month, five sets of packing and five chances of a delay on your best-selling scent. For most small businesses the ordering effort and the risk of running out outweigh the small cash saving. Eight oils, three ways to buy 500 g a month
Here is the title question priced for eight real oils. Each row buys 500 g a month for a year of steady use. The 1 kg column is the kilo price divided by two, because one kilo lasts you two months. The holding-cost column is what the kilo's extra 250 g of average stock costs at an example holding rate of 1.5% a month (18% a year). That rate is a placeholder for your own cost of money and storage, not a market figure.
| Oil | 5 × 100 g a month | One 500 g a month | 1 kg ÷ 2 (per month) | Extra holding for the kilo | Cheapest overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | ₹2,700.00 | ₹2,620.00 | ₹2,610.50 | ₹19.51 / month | 500 g |
| Sandalwood | ₹2,513.40 | ₹2,513.40 | ₹2,513.40 | ₹18.85 / month | 500 g (same as 5 × 100 g) |
| British Rose | ₹1,711.00 | ₹1,593.00 | ₹1,534.00 | ₹11.06 / month | 1 kg every 2 months |
| Jasmine | ₹2,150.00 | ₹1,961.00 | ₹1,961.50 | ₹14.71 / month | 500 g |
| Mango Coconut | ₹2,500.00 | ₹1,982.00 | ₹1,982.00 | ₹14.87 / month | 500 g |
| Pumpkin Spice | ₹2,950.00 | ₹2,950.00 | ₹2,655.00 | ₹17.70 / month | 1 kg every 2 months |
| Saffron Cedarwood | ₹3,481.00 | ₹2,584.20 | ₹3,433.80 | ₹32.13 / month | 500 g |
| Love Spell | ₹2,245.00 | ₹2,499.00 | ₹2,249.50 | ₹15.00 / month | 5 × 100 g |
The table falls into four groups. Flat oils such as Sandalwood cost the same at every size (₹502.68 per 100 g, ₹2,513.40 per 500 g, ₹5,026.80 per kg), so the 500 g buys you one bottle instead of five and the kilo only adds holding cost. Nearly flat oils such as Lavender save a little at 500 g (₹80.00 a month) and a little more at 1 kg (₹9.50), which is less than the kilo's extra holding cost of ₹19.51. 500 g savers such as Mango Coconut and Jasmine make the whole saving at 500 g and nothing more at 1 kg. 1 kg savers such as Pumpkin Spice save nothing at 500 g and 10.0% at 1 kg.
Look at British Rose, near the top of CSI's best-selling sort. It saves ₹118.00 a month at 500 g and another ₹59.00 a month at 1 kg, against ₹11.06 of extra holding. For that oil, the kilo is a sound choice at 500 g a month. Now look at Love Spell. Its 500 g costs more per gram than its 100 g (₹2,499.00 against five 100 g bottles at ₹2,245.00), while its kilo is back down at ₹4.50 a gram. The listed ladder is not always a smooth slope, which is why this page prices each oil rather than giving you a rule of thumb.
| 500 g vs 100 g, per gram | Oils | Examples (100 g → 500 g per gram) |
|---|---|---|
| Within ±1% (flat) | 31 | Sandalwood ₹5.03 → ₹5.03 · Blue Ocean ₹4.95 → ₹4.96 · Apple Cinnamon ₹4.74 → ₹4.74 · Pumpkin Spice ₹5.90 → ₹5.90 |
| 1% to 5% cheaper | 14 | Lavender ₹5.40 → ₹5.24 · Roasted Coffee ₹3.90 → ₹3.78 · Dark Vanilla ₹7.90 → ₹7.68 · Cinnamon Vanilla ₹4.84 → ₹4.60 |
| 5% or more cheaper | 16 | Citronella ₹7.67 → ₹2.95 · Saffron Cedarwood ₹6.96 → ₹5.17 · Honeydew Melon ₹4.35 → ₹3.40 · Mango Coconut ₹5.00 → ₹3.96 · Verbena ₹5.90 → ₹4.96 · British Rose ₹3.42 → ₹3.19 |
| Dearer at 500 g | 1 | Love Spell ₹4.49 → ₹5.00 |
So the honest summary for the 500 g step matches what the rest of this cluster finds for other steps: about half the catalogue is priced linearly, and the savings are concentrated in a minority of oils. The step that is reliable across almost every oil is the one below this, from 15 g to 50 g or 100 g, where the 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium per gram. If any of your production is still poured from 15 g testers, fix that first. When the kilo earns its place
There are three good reasons to buy a kilo at 500 g a month. The first is a real per-gram saving at 1 kg that beats the extra holding cost. For Pumpkin Spice, the kilo saves ₹295.00 a month against ₹17.70 of extra holding, about ₹3,540.00 a year before holding. The second is stock security for a scent you cannot afford to run out of, especially before a festive peak. The third is fewer orders if each order costs you delivery, time or both. If none of these applies, the 500 g every month is the leaner choice.
| Oil | ₹/g at 500 g | ₹/g at 1 kg | Monthly saving from the kilo | Extra holding for the kilo | Net per month | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin Spice | ₹5.90 | ₹5.31 | ₹295.00 | ₹17.70 | ₹277.30 | Kilo pays |
| Lavender | ₹5.24 | ₹5.22 | ₹9.50 | ₹19.51 | -₹10.01 | Kilo costs slightly more once holding is counted — choose on convenience |
| Sandalwood | ₹5.03 | ₹5.03 | ₹0.00 | ₹18.85 | -₹18.85 | Kilo costs a little — buy it only for security |
The sums are small at this scale, and that is the point. At 500 g a month of one oil, the pack decision is worth tens of rupees a month for most oils and a few hundred for the handful with real breaks. It is not worth risking two months of an unproven scent to capture. Where the money genuinely moves is the choice of oil itself: at 16 g a candle, the difference between a ₹3.07-a-gram oil and a ₹7.65-a-gram oil is ₹73.28 on every candle, far more than any pack step.
Pack traps — where bigger costs more
Two oils on CSI's list break the usual pattern hard. Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood are both listed at ₹696.20 per 100 g, ₹2,584.20 per 500 g and ₹6,867.60 per kg. Per gram that is ₹6.96, ₹5.17 and ₹6.87. The 500 g is the cheapest way to buy either oil by a wide margin, and two 500 g bottles cost ₹5,168.40 against ₹6,867.60 for the kilo, a difference of ₹1,699.20 on the same kilogram. At 500 g a month that is ₹10,195.20 a year you would pay for choosing the bigger bottle.
A smaller trap is buying a size that is out of stock on paper. Vetiver lists a 1 kg at ₹5,664.00, but it was out of stock on the pull date; its 500 g at ₹2,900.00 was in stock. Chocolate Fudge had its 100 g out of stock but the 500 g at ₹1,982.40 in stock. A price you cannot buy is not a price. Check the size you plan around before you build a costing on it.
Making the switch
The three oils below show the three patterns you are most likely to meet: a big 500 g saving, a saving only at 1 kg, and a kilo trap.
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Months at 500 g / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21 | 0.03 |
| 50 g | ₹250.00 | ₹5.00 | 0.1 |
| 100 g | ₹500.00 | ₹5.00 | 0.2 |
| 500 g | ₹1,982.00 | ₹3.96 | 1 |
| 1 kg | ₹3,964.00 | ₹3.96 | 2 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Months at 500 g / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹106.20 | ₹7.08 | 0.03 |
| 50 g | ₹330.40 | ₹6.61 | 0.1 |
| 100 g | ₹590.00 | ₹5.90 | 0.2 |
| 500 g | ₹2,950.00 | ₹5.90 | 1 |
| 1 kg | ₹5,310.00 | ₹5.31 | 2 |
| Pack | Price | Per gram | Months at 500 g / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 g | ₹103.84 | ₹6.92 | 0.03 |
| 50 g | ₹354.00 | ₹7.08 | 0.1 |
| 100 g | ₹696.20 | ₹6.96 | 0.2 |
| 500 g | ₹2,584.20 | ₹5.17 | 1 |
| 1 kg | ₹6,867.60 | ₹6.87 | 2 |
Freshness, storage and the second month
Buying a kilo means the second 500 g waits a month on your shelf, opened. In general practice, fragrance oil is kept tightly capped, in the dark and away from heat, and a bottle that is opened and closed daily is exposed to more air than a sealed one. Shelf life and storage advice differ by oil and are not published in the data this page uses. Ask CSI on WhatsApp for the oil's documentation and storage guidance before you commit to months of stock of a single oil.
A simple way to limit the risk is to decant. When a kilo arrives, pour the second half into a clean, dry, well-sealed bottle straight away and leave it closed until you need it. Label it with the oil and the delivery date. That way the kilo behaves like two sealed 500 g bottles on your shelf, while you keep the kilo's price where it is lower. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a page about buying bigger bottles, the convenient advice for us would be "go to the kilo". Our own listed prices say the kilo is no cheaper per gram for many oils and is dearer than two 500 g bottles for Saffron Cedarwood and Sage and Cedarwood, so this page says so and prices the exceptions.
Every oil price on this page is CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026, across the Fragrance Oils collection. Out-of-stock sizes are flagged rather than priced as buyable. Monthly costs, per-gram prices, average stock and the 62-oil comparison of 100 g against 500 g are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.
The 500 g monthly usage comes from the title. The 16 g per 200 g candle at 8%, steady use, and the example holding cost of 1.5% a month are working assumptions, not facts about your business.
