Fragrance Load · Hot Throw Without More Oil
When a candle is not throwing, the reflex is to add oil. It is also the most expensive fix, it runs into the wax's ceiling, and sometimes it makes the burn worse. Most of what decides hot throw is not how much oil is in the wax but how much of it the candle actually releases — and that depends on the wick, the pool, the cure, the jar and the room.
₹22.76
extra oil cost per 200 g candle of going from 8% to 10% with Dark Vanilla Oud at its 1 kg price — the benchmark every other lever has to beat · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I get more hot throw without adding fragrance oil? Release more of the oil you already have. In order: weigh to the true load, cure to a fixed checkpoint, make sure the wick gives a full melt pool, burn long enough to reach it, judge in a suitable room, and check your addition method. Only then consider the wax or the load.

What matters most? In general candle-making practice, the melt pool. Scent leaves the candle from the liquid pool, so a pool that never reaches the glass releases less at any load. The wick decides the pool. We do not publish wick sizes for jar diameters, so find yours by burn test.

What does each lever cost? Weighing, cure, burn time and room: nothing. Thin C1 → Thick C2 wick: ₹3.54 a candle. Adding 2 points of Dark Vanilla Oud: ₹22.76 a candle. The full table.

How do I test the levers? Five candles at 8%: a control, a young candle, two wick options — and one at 10% as a benchmark. If a lever matches the 10% candle, you have found throw without oil. Kit: ₹2,115.40. The test.
The short answer
The answer: Improve release, not quantity: full melt pool (wick), adequate burn time, proper cure, sensible jar and fill, the right judging room and a correct process. Add oil last, within the wax's ceiling.
Cost: Free: weighing, cure, burn time, room. Wick upgrade: ₹3.54–₹6.10 a candle. +2 points of oil: ₹22.76 a candle (Dark Vanilla Oud, 1 kg price).
The test: Four 8% candles varying one lever each, plus a 10% benchmark. If a lever candle matches the benchmark blind, you have your answer without more oil.
Extra cost per 200 g candle of each hot-throw lever — Dark Vanilla Oud example Weigh to the true load ₹0.00 — free Cure to a fixed checkpoint ₹0.00 — free Burn long enough for a full pool ₹0.00 — free Judge in the right room ₹0.00 — free Thin C1 → Thick C2 wick ₹3.54 Thin C1 → cotton braided wick ₹6.10 +2 points of oil (8% → 10%) ₹22.76 Oil at the 1 kg price (₹5,691.00); wicks from the 25 September pull. Cost only — which lever works for your candle is found by test.
Four of the most important levers cost nothing. A wick change costs a few rupees. Adding two points of oil costs the most of the levers shown — and in CSI 464 you cannot go above 10%. The chart shows cost only; the lever test on this page tells you which ones work in your candle.
Straight answer
I want maximum hot throw from my soy candle — how do I optimise fragrance load without simply adding more oil?
Treat hot throw as a question of release, not content. The oil in your candle reaches the room mainly from the liquid melt pool, so the biggest levers are the ones that decide how much pool you have, how hot it gets and how long it runs. Work through them in cost order. Weigh to the true load — oil as a share of the finished candle, not of the wax. Cure to a fixed checkpoint such as 14 days before judging. Wick for a full melt pool that reaches the glass within a reasonable burn; we do not publish wick sizes for jar diameters, so find yours by burn test with Eco wicks or cotton braided wicks. Burn long enough to reach that pool before judging. Choose and fill the jar sensibly — pool width and headspace matter. Judge in a realistic room, fans off, fresh nose. Only when those are right should load come back into play, and then within the wax maker's ceiling (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%). The money explains the order: on Dark Vanilla Oud, two extra points of oil cost ₹22.76 a candle at the 1 kg price; moving from an Eco Thin C1 to a Thick C2 wick costs ₹3.54; cure, burn time and weighing cost nothing.
One line: more oil in a candle that is not releasing what it has is money in the jar, not scent in the room.
The first lever is almost always the wick. Eco Candle Wicks come in Thin C1 (10 for ₹59.00, ₹5.90 each) and Thick C2 (10 for ₹94.40, ₹9.44 each); Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are ₹12.00 each at every pack size. Buy a small pack of each size you want to compare and burn-test them in your jar.

Throw is release, not content

A candle with 20 g of oil that releases half of it throws less than a candle with 16 g that releases most of it.

Fragrance load decides how much oil is in the candle. Hot throw depends on how much of that oil leaves the candle and reaches the room. In general candle-making practice, scent is released mainly from the liquid wax of the melt pool: the wider and more fully formed the pool, the more surface there is for fragrance to leave from, and the better the candle performs. A candle whose pool never reaches the glass is releasing from a small central well, whatever its load. That is why adding oil to an under-wicked candle often disappoints — and why reducing load sometimes improves the burn.

Release also depends on time and state. A freshly poured soy candle has not finished crystallising, and many makers find it throws less than the same candle two weeks later (My Candle Smells Weak One Day After Pouring but Much Stronger After Two Weeks — Why Does Curing Affect Fragrance Performance? explains the mechanism commonly described). A candle judged fifteen minutes after lighting has not reached a full pool. A candle judged in a large room with a ceiling fan, by someone who has been pouring oils all morning, is being measured by a noisy instrument. None of these changes the oil content, and all of them change the throw you perceive.

General candle-making practice · not CSI measurements
Content levers vs release levers
Lever Type What it changes Limit
Fragrance load Content How much oil is in the candle Wax ceiling (Chunks 13%, CSI 464 10%); cost; can hurt the burn
Wick and melt pool Release Pool width, depth and temperature Soot, mushrooming, overheated glass if over-wicked
Burn time before judging Release Whether the pool has formed None — just patience
Cure Release How the oil sits in the finished wax Diminishing returns after a point; Does Longer Curing Always Improve Hot Throw or Is There a Point Where Additional Curing Makes No Meaningful Difference?
Jar and fill Release Pool surface area, headspace, airflow at the opening Must match the wick; changes the product's look and cost
Room and judging Perception How much of what is released you actually notice Customers' rooms vary; test in a realistic one
Process (weigh, add, mix) Content and release Whether the oil is really there, evenly spread Follow the wax maker's instructions
Check the load you think you have
Before any other lever, confirm the oil is really at the load you intend. 16 g of oil in a 200 g candle is 8%; 16 g added to 200 g of wax is 7.41% of the 216 g result. For a fixed wax weight, oil = wax × load ÷ (1 − load). I'm Making a 1 Kg Soy Wax Batch at 8% Fragrance Load — Do I Add 80 g Fragrance Oil to 1 Kg Wax or Should the 8% be Calculated from the Total Finished Candle Weight? covers both conventions. It is the only free lever that also changes content.

The levers, ranked by cost

Here are the levers priced per 200 g candle, using a working example: Dark Vanilla Oud at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, Eco Thin C1 wick, White Matte Glass Jar. That candle's material cost is ₹277.97 (oil at the 1 kg price, wax, wick and jar; excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST). Every lever is compared with the benchmark: two more points of oil.

Eco Thin C1 → Eco Thick C2 ₹3.54 ₹3,540.00 Burn test: pool, flame, soot
Eco Thin C1 → Cotton Braided Ready Made ₹6.10 ₹6,100.00 Burn test in your jar

+2 points of oil (8% → 10%) ₹22.76 ₹22,764.00 Only after the levers above

At 100 g prices the oil benchmark is higher still: ₹23.60 a candle, because Dark Vanilla Oud is ₹5.90 a gram at 100 g against ₹5.69 at 1 kg. Performance Wooden Wicks (10 for ₹590.00) are the one lever that costs more than the oil in this example — they are a design choice with their own burn character, not a throw fix, and they need their own tests.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We sell fragrance oil by the gram and wicks by the paise. The profitable advice would be "go to 10%". But on this example, 1,000 candles at 10% instead of 8% cost you ₹22,764.00 more in Dark Vanilla Oud, while the wick upgrade costs ₹3,540.00 — if the wick is the real problem. Test the cheap levers first; buy more oil only if they fail.

Wick, pool and burn time

If the pool does not reach the glass, the candle is not showing you what the oil can do.

The wick is the engine of hot throw. It sets the flame size, which sets how much wax melts, how wide and deep the pool gets, and how warm it runs. A commonly used working target in container candles is a pool that reaches, or nearly reaches, the glass within the first few hours of a burn, with a steady flame and no heavy soot. CSI does not publish wick sizes for jar diameters, and wick choice interacts with the wax, the jar and even the oil, so the only reliable answer is a burn test.

1
Burn your current candle and time the poolLight it in a still room and note when the pool reaches the glass, how deep it is at one and two hours, and whether a ring of unmelted wax remains. Tunnelling or a narrow pool is a wick signal, not a load signal.
2
Pour the same candle with the next wick upSame oil, same load, same wax, same jar, same cure. Only the wick changes — for example, Eco Thin C1 to Eco Thick C2, or to a Cotton Braided Ready Made wick. Keep a wick centering device (5 for ₹118.00) on each so the wick stays centred.
3
Compare pool and throw, blindCode both, burn in the same room at the same time on different days, and score throw at one and two hours at a fixed distance. Record pool width, flame height and any soot or mushrooming.
4
Watch for over-wickingA larger wick that gives a deeper, hotter pool may throw more — or it may soot, mushroom, flicker or overheat the jar. Strong but the wick struggles covers that balance. Pick the smallest wick that gives a full, steady pool.
5
Judge after the pool forms, every timeWhatever candle you are judging, wait until the pool is established before scoring. A candle judged in its first twenty minutes is being judged on its cold surface.

Burn time is the free half of the same lever. Customers are commonly advised to burn a new container candle long enough to form a full pool on the first light, to avoid tunnelling; the same logic applies to your tests. Score at fixed times — one and two hours are sensible working checkpoints — rather than whenever you walk past.

The CSI principle
The pool is where the scent leaves.
Load decides how much fragrance is in the wax. The pool decides how much of it gets out. Fix the pool first, and you may find the load you already have is enough.

Jar, fill and room

The jar shapes the pool and the air around it. Two jars holding the same 200 g of wax can give very different pool surfaces, and a wider pool generally means more surface to release scent from — provided the wick can melt it. Headspace (the gap between the wax surface and the rim) also matters: a deeply recessed pool in a tall jar sits in still air. Neither effect has been measured by CSI; both are general practice worth testing if you are choosing a jar.

Jar options and what to test
Container Price Fill weight What to check for throw
White Matte Glass Jar ₹354.00 / 5 (₹70.80 each) Used as 200 g in CSI's examples Pool reach with your wick; headspace after fill
200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, golden lug cap ₹200.60 / 5 (₹40.12 each) Not published — weigh a fill Pool width vs your wick; lid for cure
Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml, clear cap ₹47.20 each Not published — weigh a fill Smaller pool; judge in a smaller room
Golden Aluminium Tin ₹360.00 / 12 (₹30.00 each) 85 g Wide, shallow format; short burns

The room is the last lever and the one most often forgotten. The same candle will seem strong in a small bedroom and faint in a large living room with a ceiling fan running. That is not a flaw in the candle, but it changes what "maximum hot throw" means for your customer. Decide the room you are designing for, and judge in something like it. Room size and hot throw and Indian homes with ceiling fans set out how to test for real rooms.

Wax is a lever too, but a bigger one to pull. Different waxes hold and release oil differently, and makers commonly choose container waxes partly for throw. Changing wax means re-testing wick and load from scratch, so treat it as a reformulation. If you do, note the ceilings: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%; for Coconut Soy CSI 468 and other waxes no ceiling is in our data — check the product page or ask us.

Judged in the workshop, sold into living rooms. A maker perfects throw in a small, closed workroom after an hour of pouring. The candles seem strong because the room is saturated and small. Customers burn them in open-plan rooms with fans and find them weak. Nothing about the candle changed. Judge in a clean, aired room of the size your customers use, and with a nose that has had a break.

The five-candle lever test

This test asks one practical question: can a free or cheap lever give you what two extra points of oil would? Four candles at 8% vary one lever each; a fifth at 10% is the benchmark. All five are the same oil, wax, jar and fill, poured on the same day.

200 g candles in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · Dark Vanilla Oud · load = share of finished weight
The lever test
Candle Load Wick Judged at Question it answers
Control 8% (16 g + 184 g) Eco Thin C1 (or your current) 14 days Baseline
Young 8% As control 3 days How much does cure change throw? (compare with control)
Wick A 8% Eco Thick C2 14 days Does a larger Eco wick close the gap?
Wick B 8% Cotton Braided Ready Made 14 days Does a braided wick close the gap?
Benchmark 10% (20 g + 180 g) As control 14 days What two more points of oil give you

Judge the four 14-day candles blind against each other, in the same room, at a fixed distance, at one and two hours; judge the young candle at 3 days on its own and compare its scores with the control. If a wick candle scores as well as the benchmark and burns cleanly, you have found the throw without the oil. If nothing matches the benchmark, the oil may genuinely need more load — go ahead, within the ceiling, and consider a step-down later once everything else is right. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Fragrance oil is one of our main products, and the obvious advice would be to use more of it. This page ranks it last among the levers because, in most weak candles, the oil is not the limit.

Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick prices from the 25 September pull (Performance Wooden Wicks 10 for ₹590.00). Jar prices: White Matte Glass Jar and Wick Centering Device verified 10 September 2026 (Blog 760); Salsa, Yankee and Golden Tin from the 24–25 September pull. Every cost figure is arithmetic on those prices.

The link between melt pool and throw, the effect of cure and headspace, and room effects are general candle-making knowledge, not CSI measurements. CSI publishes no throw, cure or wick-sizing data. The 14-day and 3-day checkpoints and 1- and 2-hour scoring points are working assumptions. For MSDS or IFRA documents, or help choosing what to test, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make my soy candle throw better?
Check that the load is weighed correctly, cure the candle to a fixed checkpoint, make sure the wick gives a full melt pool, burn long enough before judging, and judge in a realistic room. Adjust the load only after those.
Does a bigger wick increase hot throw?
Often, if the current wick is not producing a full melt pool, because more pool surface releases more scent. Too large a wick causes soot, mushrooming or an overheated jar. Burn-test one size up at the same load.
Does fragrance load affect hot throw?
Yes, but it is not the only factor and often not the limiting one. Beyond a point, more oil may not add detectable throw and can hurt the burn. Wax ceilings also cap it: 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 10% for CSI 464.
How long should a candle burn before the scent fills the room?
Usually until the melt pool is well formed, which depends on the wick and jar. Score tests at fixed times such as one and two hours rather than in the first few minutes.
Does jar shape affect candle throw?
In general practice, yes: pool width and headspace affect how much scent is released and how freely it moves. The wick must suit the jar, so any change of jar means a new burn test.
Why is my candle strong in one room and weak in another?
Room size, airflow, fans and your own nose fatigue all change what you perceive. Judge candles in a room like your customers', after airing it. My Candle Fills a Small Bedroom but Disappears in a Large Living Room — How Should Room Size Influence How I Judge Hot Throw? covers this in detail.
