I Want to Create My Own Internal Wick Guide for the Exact Waxes, Jars and Fragrance Oils My Business Uses — How Should I Build It from Controlled Burn-Test Data?
Share
What can go into an entry? Only results from controlled tests: one variable changed, candles burned to about 1 cm left, every gate passed. Supplier claims, customer impressions and uncontrolled batches never become entries.
What do the confidence levels mean? Our scheme: A = at least three full-life passes from at least two oils in the group, no open failures; B = at least one full-life pass; C = screens only, not for production. Open = no evidence.
What does raising an entry cost? In our worked example, moving the 6.0–6.9 cm heavy-group entry from B to A takes two more Eco C2 candles in a second heavy oil: ₹477.99 of materials, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST.

What an internal wick guide is, and is not
Your raw burn records answer "what happened in test T26-041?". The guide answers the question a person at the pouring bench actually asks: "which wick goes in this jar with this oil?". It is the published, short form of your evidence, and it is only as good as the rules that stop anything else creeping in. How to store the raw records it is written from is the burn-data organisation post; this page is about the guide built on top.
It is not a generic wick chart, and it should never look like one. A generic chart gives one wick per diameter. Your guide gives one build per diameter band and oil group, in one wax, at one load basis, and admits that some cells are empty. That honesty is what makes it trustworthy: a staff member who finds "open, test first" knows to stop, while one who finds a guessed entry pours a production run on it.
It is also not a specification for a finished product. Locking every element of a commercial candle (wax, oil, load, wick, jar, dye, temperatures, cure, burn performance) is the commercial specification post. The guide feeds that specification the wick line, with the evidence behind it.
The guide page, section by section
Keep it to one printed page per wax where you can. If it does not fit, the bands are too fine or the oil groups too many.
| Section | Contents | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Wax (exact product and code), load basis (% of total weight), edition, date, approver, edition superseded | A staff member must know at a glance whether this is the current page for this wax |
| Band rows | Measured inside-diameter bands, each with the fill weight and load the entries assume | Bands come from measured jars; fills tie each row to real products |
| Oil-group columns | The groups your evidence supports (for example light, middle, heavy), with the member oils listed in a footnote | An oil appears in a column only after it has been admitted to that group |
| Entries | Build, evidence count, confidence letter; full entry details on a second sheet if needed | The grid is for the bench; the entry sheet is for whoever approves |
| Margin: retest triggers | The events that suspend, screen or re-bracket an entry | Triggers are what keep last year's entries honest |
| Foot: change log | Edition, date, entries added, downgraded, suspended or retired, and why | So nobody pours from a superseded page |
Oil groups are earned, not assumed. An oil joins a column through a screen on that group's build plus one full life, which is the admission routine in the behaviour-groups post. Until then it sits in a footnote as "provisional" and has no entry to borrow.
Anatomy of one entry
The diagram's bold cell, written out. It is the light-group entry for the 6.0–6.9 cm band in CSI 464, the band that CSI's 150 g jar falls into on our assumed 0.35 cm wall (6.3 cm inside from a 7 cm outside). Measure your own.
| Field | Entry | Rule behind it |
|---|---|---|
| Approved build | 1 × Eco C1 (CSI), centred, trimmed 5–6 mm, sessions about 3 h | Wick named by supplier and product, not by a generic size |
| System | 150 g fill, 8% of total weight (12 g oil + 138 g wax), CSI 464 poured 80–85°C | The entry holds only for this fill, load and process |
| Covers | Rim inside 6.1–6.5 cm (measured); light-group oils only | Tolerance comes from the jars actually tested, not the band edges |
| Evidence | Nine full-life passes across four oils; test IDs listed | Every entry points to rows a sceptic can open |
| Confidence | A · reviewed 1 October 2026 · next review in a year | Level set by the rules below, never by feel |
| Exceptions | None in this group | An oil that needs another build is listed, not hidden |
| Retest if | Jar lot outside tolerance; wax or load change; new wick lot fails its carton check | Triggers are specific enough to act on |
| Never | For a jar measured by listing size, or an oil not yet admitted | States the misuse most likely to happen |
Why a tolerance narrower than the band? Because the evidence came from jars measuring 6.1–6.5 cm at the rim, not from every jar between 6.0 and 6.9 cm. Even inside the covered range the pool area moves: shrinking from 6.3 to 6.1 cm loses 6.2% of the surface, and growing to 6.5 cm adds 6.4%. A jar outside the tolerance is a new question, even in the same band.
Confidence levels: what the evidence must show
| Level | Evidence required | Allowed use |
|---|---|---|
| A | At least three full-life passes, from at least two oils in the group, in jars inside the stated tolerance; no unresolved failure on this build in this cell | Production for admitted oils in the group |
| B | At least one full-life pass, plus screens; or passes from one oil only | Production for the oils actually tested; other oils need their own full life first |
| C | Screens only (burns 1–3 passed); no candle yet burned to about 1 cm left | Testing only, never production |
| Open | No evidence, or evidence that conflicts | Test first; do not borrow from the neighbouring band |
| Suspended | A trigger fired or a new failure arrived | Stop until the trigger's action is complete |
The thresholds are ours; choose your own if you prefer, but write them on the guide's first page and apply them the same way every time. The point of a mechanical scheme is that two people reading the same evidence rows assign the same letter. "How far down" counts as full life is the burn-depth acceptance post's question; this scheme simply requires it.
Rules for writing entries from controlled data only
Four more rules keep the document itself honest. Name wicks exactly, with supplier and product, and record the wick lot in the evidence. Write "approved for", never "recommended": the guide states what passed, not what might. Date every entry and give it a review date. Change the edition whenever an entry is added, downgraded, suspended or retired, and archive the old page so nobody pours from it.
Retest triggers: when an entry stops being true
| Trigger | Action on the entry | Method lives in |
|---|---|---|
| Customer or staff report of soot, a tall flame, or glass heat | Suspend at once; burn retained candles | masking checklist |
| New jar lot measures outside the entry's tolerance | Treat as a new system; entry does not cover it | incoming-lot sheet |
| Jar change of a few millimetres inside | Retest group representatives, not every oil | the 7.5 to 8 cm retest |
| Load change (for example 8% to 10%) | Downgrade to C for the new load; screen, then full life | the load requalification plan |
| Any wax change | New guide page; old entries carry geometry only | the soy to soy-coconut carry-over |
| New wick supplier, or a new carton that burns differently | Screen two candles against retained wicks; suspend on a difference | the supplier comparison · new-carton check |
| New oil, or an oil lot that smells or looks different | No entry until admitted; re-screen on a lot change | the admission test |
| Review date reached | Check the evidence still meets the level; re-burn one retained candle if in doubt | This page |
A two-candle trigger screen in the worked-example system costs ₹477.99 in materials (₹239.00 a candle on C2 with Cinnamon Vanilla). That is the price of keeping an entry; it is small next to a production run poured on an entry that stopped being true.
Raising an entry from B to A, costed
In the worked example, the 6.0–6.9 cm heavy-group entry is at B: one full-life pass on Eco C2 with Dark Vanilla at 8% (the Dark Vanilla page states "candles (6-10%)" and "Vanillin present - note for light-coloured wax"). Level A needs at least three full-life passes from at least two oils. So pour two candles of a second admitted heavy oil, Cinnamon Vanilla, on the same build, and burn both to about 1 cm left.
| Item | Size bought | Used | Cost of what is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cinnamon Vanilla | 50 g, ₹271.40 (₹5.43/g) | 24 g (26 g left) | ₹130.27 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 1 kg, ₹507.40 | 276 g | ₹140.04 |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | Pack of 10, ₹944.00 | 2 jars (₹94.40 each) | ₹188.80 |
| Eco Candle Wicks, Thick (C2) | 10 wicks, ₹94.40 | 2 wicks | ₹18.88 |
| Upgrade, materials consumed | 2 candles | ₹477.99 |
Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. If both pass, the entry has three full-life passes from two oils and moves to A in the next edition. If either fails, the entry stays at B for Dark Vanilla only, Cinnamon Vanilla is logged as an exception for this cell, and the failure's direction decides its next bracket. One caution on loads: Cinnamon Vanilla's page allows "Up to 13%", but CSI 464's page caps the wax at 10%, and the lower ceiling governs, so a guide entry in this wax can never cite more than 15 g of oil in a 150 g candle. (If the 13% were read as a share of wax weight it would be 11.50% of total weight; it is moot here, because the wax's 10% is lower either way.)
Buying for the guide's approved builds
Four items, chosen on page statements, price and stock on 29 September 2026. CSI publishes no wick-performance data, so nothing here is ranked on burn results. A guide is written from evidence you already have; buy only what the next upgrade or trigger screen needs.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, oils and holder named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you that CSI publishes no wick-performance data, that our wick range will leave gaps in your guide, and that bigger wick packs save nothing per wick.
Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 29 September 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged where it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Load, temperature, vanillin and holder wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.
The page layout, entry fields, confidence scheme, writing rules and triggers are our recommendation; the guide page, its entries, evidence counts and tolerances are worked examples. Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (150 g at 8% = 12 g oil + 138 g wax). Ceilings as the pages state (CSI 464 up to 10%, pour 80–90°C; Cinnamon Vanilla up to 13%; Dark Vanilla 6–10%); the lower ceiling governs. The 0.35 cm wall, 6.3 cm inside and the 6.1–6.5 cm tolerance are assumptions or worked examples. The guide page, its fills per band, entries, evidence counts and confidence letters are illustrative; the confidence scheme, writing rules and triggers are editorial judgement. Costs exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
