Scaling · Working capital
Scaling from 500 to 2,000 candles a month roughly quadruples what you spend on materials each week. It does not have to quadruple what you hold. Inventory capital is weeks of cover multiplied by weekly spend, and at higher volume you can order more often and hold fewer weeks.
₹4,57,175.57
raw-material inventory at 2,000 candles a month with standard cover, against ₹1,16,035.72 at 500 · lean cover: ₹3,29,655.76 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much working capital do I need for raw materials at 2,000 candles a month? In our example, about ₹4,57,175.57 held in wax, oil, wicks and jars with standard cover (wax 3 weeks, oil 4, jars 4, wicks 8), or ₹3,29,655.76 with lean cover. At 500 a month the same method gives ₹1,16,035.72.

How do I calculate it? For each material: weekly spend × weeks of cover you want to hold. Weekly spend is candles a month ÷ 4.33 × that material's cost per candle. Add the four lines together.

How much extra cash does the growth itself need? The difference between the two levels: ₹3,41,139.85 with standard cover, or ₹2,13,620.04 if you move to lean cover as you grow. You need it before the extra sales arrive, not after.

Does buying bigger lower the cost per candle? Very little at CSI's listed prices. The four-oil mix is ₹4.98/g at 100 g and ₹4.75/g at 1 kg. Wax, wicks and jars are flat per unit. The per-candle cost moves from ₹274.17 to ₹270.39, so almost all of the capital increase is volume, not price.
The short answer
Formula: Inventory capital = Σ (candles a month ÷ 4.33 × cost per candle of the material × weeks of cover for that material).
Example: Per candle ₹270.39 at 2,000 a month = ₹1,24,796.74 of materials a week. Standard cover holds ₹4,57,175.57, lean cover ₹3,29,655.76.
Scope: Inventory only. Receivables, packaging, labour, rent and finished-goods stock are separate. I'm Moving from Made-To-Order Candles to Keeping Finished Inventory — How Does That Change How Much Wax, Fragrance and Packaging I Should Purchase? covers finished stock.

Raw-material inventory to hold at each monthly volume — standard vs lean weeks of cover ₹1.16 lakh ₹0.84 lakh 500 candles / month ₹2.29 lakh ₹1.65 lakh 1,000 candles / month ₹3.43 lakh ₹2.47 lakh 1,500 candles / month ₹4.57 lakh ₹3.30 lakh 2,000 candles / month Standard cover: wax 3 wk · oil 4 · jars 4 · wicks 8 Lean cover: wax 2 wk · oil 3 · jars 3 · wicks 6 200 g candle at 8% · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · four-oil mix · Eco Thin C1 · White Matte jar · 4% allowance on wax and oil Weeks of cover are working assumptions. Inventory only: packaging, receivables and labour are outside these figures.
Holding standard cover, inventory grows almost in a straight line with volume. Holding lean cover, 2,000 candles a month needs less than three times the inventory of 500, not four. Both sets of weeks are working assumptions. Replace them with the cover your own delivery times and reorder discipline allow.
Straight answer
I want to grow from 500 to 2,000 candles per month — how much working capital will I need just for raw-material inventory?
Work it out one material at a time: weekly spend × weeks of cover. Our example candle is 200 g at 8%, in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, with a four-oil mix, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte jar. It costs ₹270.39 in materials, including a 4% allowance on wax and oil. At 2,000 a month that is ₹1,24,796.74 of materials a week. Hold 3 weeks of wax, 4 of oil, 4 of jars and 8 of wicks, and the inventory is ₹4,57,175.57. The same method at 500 a month gives ₹1,16,035.72, so the growth needs about ₹3,41,139.85 of extra inventory capital, and it needs it before the sales arrive. You do not have to hold the same weeks as you grow, though. At 2,000 a month you order more often, and lean cover (2, 3, 3 and 6 weeks) brings the figure down to ₹3,29,655.76. Material prices barely help. At CSI's listed packs the per-candle cost only moves from ₹274.17 to ₹270.39. These figures cover raw-material inventory only. Packaging, finished stock, receivables and labour sit on top, and My Candle Business Is Growing but All My Cash Keeps Going Back into Wax, Fragrance Oils and Jars — How Much Raw-Material Inventory Should I Actually Hold? covers the wider holding decision.
One line: inventory capital = weeks of cover × weekly spend — shrink the weeks, not the candle.
Wax is the heaviest line to finance at scale. At 2,000 candles a month the example uses about 382.72 kg of wax a month, including the allowance. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹5,999.00 per 10 kg, the same per kilo as the 1 kg, so the bag size does not change your capital, only how often you reorder.

Start from one candle

Working capital looks like a finance question. For a candle maker it is a recipe multiplied by a calendar.

Every figure on this page starts from the material cost of one candle. Ours is a 200 g container candle at an 8% fragrance load: 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. We add a 4% allowance on both for pour loss and test burns, which is a working assumption; plan 3–5%. The oil is an even mix of four scents, and the 1 kg rate applies once volume justifies it:

Per candle · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · wick and jar verified 10 September 2026
The material cost of one candle at 500 and at 2,000 a month
Material Per candle At 500 a month At 2,000 a month
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 184 g + 4% = 191.36 g ₹114.62 ₹114.62
Four-oil mix: Lavender, Fresh Strawberries, Dark Vanilla Oud, Cinnamon Vanilla 16 g + 4% = 16.64 g ₹82.84 (100 g rate ₹4.98/g) ₹79.07 (1 kg rate ₹4.75/g)
Eco Thin C1 wick 1 ₹5.90 ₹5.90
White Matte Glass Jar 1 ₹70.80 ₹70.80
Total per candle — ₹274.17 ₹270.39

The per-candle figure falls by only ₹3.77 as you quadruple volume, and all of it is the oil moving from 100 g to 1 kg packs. That is typical of CSI's listed catalogue. Wax, wicks and jars are priced flat per unit, and for most oils the 1 kg is within about 1% of the 100 g per gram. So the working-capital story is almost entirely about quantity held, not price. Any volume pricing beyond the listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp, and no discount figure is published, so do not build one into your plan until you have it in writing.

Use your own candle
If your candle is 300 g, or uses a pricier oil, or a lid and label from another supplier, change the per-candle line and every figure below changes in proportion. Keep lids, labels and boxes as separate lines with your own supplier's quotes. CSI does not list them, and we will not guess them for you.

Weeks of cover, material by material

"Weeks of cover" is how many weeks of production a material's stock would last at the current rate. Holding an average of four weeks of oil means that, on a typical day, your oil shelf could keep you pouring for four weeks without a delivery. It is the cleanest way to size inventory, because it scales automatically with volume and it lets each material have its own number.

Working assumptions · replace with the cover your delivery times and reorder discipline allow
Why each material gets a different number of weeks
Material Standard cover Lean cover Why this much
Wax 3 weeks 2 weeks Every candle uses it, but it is one product from one listing, so it is easy to reorder in step
Fragrance oil 4 weeks 3 weeks Split across many scents, so each scent needs its own buffer. The total is higher than wax
Jars 4 weeks 3 weeks One per candle, bulky and breakable. Running out stops production completely
Wicks 8 weeks 6 weeks Cheap and compact, so holding more costs little and removes a line from most orders

None of those weeks is a rule. They are the kind of cover a maker who reorders every week or two, with a supplier who delivers inside a week, might hold on average. If your deliveries take longer, or you reorder monthly, your weeks go up. If you have a reliable weekly rhythm, they can come down. CSI does not publish delivery times, so set these from your own order history. I'm Growing Quickly but Don't Want to Run Out of Wax — How Do I Set a Reorder Point Based on Monthly Consumption and Supplier Lead Time? and I Have Enough Raw Materials for 500 Candles but Sales Are Growing Unpredictably — How Much Safety Stock Should I Maintain? show how reorder points and safety stock translate into the average cover you actually carry.

The common mistake: one number for everything. "We keep a month of stock" sounds prudent until you price it. A month of wicks at 2,000 candles a month is about ₹11,800. A month of jars is about ₹1,41,600. Treating them the same means either too few wicks, a cheap item that can stop production, or far more jars than you need. Give each material its own weeks.

500 to 2,000, line by line

Now multiply. Weekly production is candles a month ÷ 4.33. Weekly spend is weekly production × cost per candle. Inventory held is weekly spend × weeks of cover, material by material:

Four volume levels · per-candle cost from the table above · 4.33 weeks per month
Raw-material inventory at each volume
Candles / month Candles / week Cost per candle Monthly material spend Weekly material spend Inventory, standard cover Inventory, lean cover
500 115.38 ₹274.17 ₹1,37,083.44 ₹31,634.64 ₹1,16,035.72 ₹83,720.31

Oil ₹36,493.06 4 ₹1,45,972.22 31.9%
Jar ₹32,676.92 4 ₹1,30,707.69 28.6%
Wick ₹2,723.08 8 ₹21,784.62 4.8%
Total ₹1,24,796.74 — ₹4,57,175.57 100.0%

Wax, oil and jars carry almost all of it, in roughly equal thirds. Wicks, even at eight weeks, are under 5%. That tells you where to look for savings. Shaving a week off wicks frees about ₹2,723.08. Shaving a week off wax frees ₹52,903.68, and a week off jars ₹32,676.92. The big lines are where discipline pays.

1
Price one candleWax, oil, wick and jar at the pack size you will actually buy at the new volume, plus a 3–5% allowance on wax and oil. Add lids and labels from your own suppliers as separate lines.
2
Convert to weekly spendCandles a month ÷ 4.33 × cost per candle, for each material separately. Do it for today's volume and for the target volume.
3
Set weeks of cover per materialBase it on how often you can reorder and how long deliveries take in practice. Use your slowest recent delivery, not your fastest.
4
Multiply and addWeekly spend × weeks for each material, then total. That is the inventory capital at each volume.
5
Subtract today's figure from the targetThe difference is the step-up. Split it by growth stage if you are growing in steps.
6
Stress-test the oil lineRe-run it with your dearest scents at their share of sales. Oil is the line most likely to be understated.
The CSI principle
You finance weeks, not candles.
Two makers at 2,000 candles a month can need very different amounts of cash. The one who holds eight weeks of everything needs roughly twice the inventory capital of the one who holds four. Volume sets the weekly spend. Your ordering discipline sets the weeks.

The step-up and when you need it

The capital a growth plan needs is the difference between the inventory at the new level and at the old one. From 500 to 2,000 a month on standard cover, that is ₹4,57,175.57 − ₹1,16,035.72 = ₹3,41,139.85. If you tighten to lean cover on the way up, it is ₹3,29,655.76 − ₹1,16,035.72 = ₹2,13,620.04.

Timing matters as much as the amount. Inventory has to be on the shelf before the extra candles are poured, and the extra candles have to be poured before they sell. So the step-up capital leaves your account a few weeks before the extra sales money arrives. If you grow in stages, say 500 to 1,000 and then to 1,500 and 2,000, the step-up comes in instalments. Each stage needs its own increase, paid ahead of that stage's sales:

Staged growth · standard cover · extra inventory needed ahead of each stage
Instalments of the step-up
Stage Inventory at the new level Extra needed for this stage Cumulative extra
500 → 1,000 ₹2,28,587.79 ₹1,12,552.07 ₹1,12,552.07
1,000 → 1,500 ₹3,42,881.68 ₹1,14,293.89 ₹2,26,845.96
1,500 → 2,000 ₹4,57,175.57 ₹1,14,293.89 ₹3,41,139.85

This is also the point where inventory capital meets the rest of the business. While you grow, sales money often arrives after a delay. Marketplaces pay out on a cycle, corporate clients pay on invoice, and the monthly material bill has already quadrupled. Those items are outside this page. Just remember that the inventory figure is the part you pay first. Should I Keep More Money in Cash or Use It to Buy Larger Quantities of Candle Raw Materials at Better Prices? covers how to weigh cash in hand against materials on the shelf.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The easy advice from a supplier would be to stock up for the new level in one go. On our listed prices, stocking up early saves you nothing per unit. Wax is ₹599.00 a kilo in any bag, wicks are ₹5.90 each in any pack and jars are ₹70.80 each. So buy the step-up in stages, as each level is proven. Cash you have not yet sunk into stock is cash you still have if growth stalls at 1,200.

Ways to hold less

Scaling gives you one advantage a small maker does not have: you can order often enough that each order is small relative to use.

Order more often. At 500 candles a month you use about 22.08 kg of wax a week, so a fortnightly or monthly order feels natural. At 2,000 you use about 88.32 kg a week, and a single weekly order is as large as a whole fortnight at 500. Weekly orders of wax, jars and your top oils keep every line lean without any risk of running short, provided deliveries are reliable. This is the single biggest lever. It is how lean cover saves ₹1,27,519.81 at 2,000 a month.

Cut the tail of your scent range. Oil cover is held per scent, so every extra scent adds its own buffer. A range of 30 scents at 2,000 candles a month holds far more oil than a range of 15 selling the same total. I Have 30 Candle Fragrances but Most Sales Come from 10 — How Should I Change My Fragrance Oil Purchasing Quantities Based on Actual Demand? shows how to buy the tail in 50 g while the head goes on the kilo.

Change the formula, deliberately. A cheaper wax lowers every figure on this page. CSI 464 costs ₹507.40 a kilo against ₹599.00 for Chunks. That is ₹97.10 of wax per candle with the allowance, against ₹114.62, or ₹17.53 a candle. At 2,000 a month on three weeks of wax cover, that lowers inventory by ₹24,270.34. It is a formula change, though, not a purchasing trick. CSI 464 is rated up to 10% load against 13% for Chunks, and your wick and cure need retesting before you switch.

Keep jars in step with production, not ahead of it. Jars are about a third of the inventory and do nothing until a candle is poured into them. Synchronise them tightly with wax, using the candles-worth method in I'm Running Out of One Raw Material While Having Months of Another — How Do I Synchronise Wax, Fragrance, Wick and Jar Purchasing with Actual Production?, so you never hold six weeks of jars against two weeks of wax.

Buying at 2,000 a month

At 2,000 candles a month the example uses 382.72 kg of wax, about 33.28 kg of oil, 2,000 wicks and 2,000 jars. CSI's listed packs cover this. Wax comes in 10 kg bags (Natural Soy Pearl in 50 kg), oils in up to 1 kg per scent, and wicks in packs of up to 1,000. But you will be buying dozens of bags and kilos a month. That is the volume at which a monthly supply quote on WhatsApp makes sense. No volume discount figure is published, so ask for one against your actual monthly quantities rather than assuming it.

One last check before you commit the step-up capital: re-run the per-candle table with your real scents. A range built on ₹8-a-gram oils has a much larger oil line than our ₹4.75 mix. At 16.64 g a candle, every extra rupee per gram adds ₹16.64 per candle and about ₹30,700 of oil inventory at 2,000 a month on four weeks of cover. Price the scents, then the weeks, then the growth.

Growth quadruples what you spend each week. Only your ordering habits decide whether it quadruples what you hold.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier's easy answer to "how much working capital do I need" is "more stock". This page shows how to hold less as you grow, and it tells you that stocking up early on our flat-priced lines saves nothing per unit.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Per-candle costs, weekly spend and inventory totals are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.

The four-oil mix, the 4% allowance, the 4.33 weeks per month and the standard and lean weeks of cover are working assumptions. The figures cover raw-material inventory only, with no packaging, labour, finished goods or receivables. Frequently asked questions

how much working capital do I need for a candle business
For raw-material inventory: weekly material spend × weeks of cover, material by material. For a 200 g soy candle at ₹270.39 of materials, 2,000 a month on standard cover needs about ₹4,57,175.57. Add packaging, finished stock and receivables separately.
how many weeks of raw material stock should a candle maker keep
Give each material its own number. This page uses 3 weeks of wax, 4 of oil, 4 of jars and 8 of wicks as a standard, and 2, 3, 3 and 6 as lean. Your delivery times and ordering rhythm set the right figures.
does buying raw materials in bulk reduce working capital
No, it increases it. Bulk buying raises weeks of cover. At CSI's listed prices most lines are flat per unit, so bigger packs rarely lower cost. Ordering smaller amounts more often is what lowers inventory capital.
cost of materials for 2000 candles a month
In our example, ₹270.39 per 200 g candle, or ₹5,40,785.86 a month, including a 4% allowance on wax and oil. It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.
how much wax for 2000 candles
At 184 g of wax per 200 g candle, 368 kg, or 382.72 kg with a 4% allowance. That is about 38 bags of 10 kg a month. Larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp.
how to reduce inventory when scaling candle production

Standard cover (wax 3, oil 4, jars 4, wicks 8 weeks) and lean cover (2, 3, 3, 6) are working assumptions. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10% fragrance load, the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. Delivery times and volume discounts are not published.
