Scaling, Cash Flow & Procurement · Cash vs bulk
"Better prices for larger quantities" is only true where the price per unit actually falls. On CSI's listed catalogue it mostly does not: most wax, wicks and oils cost the same per gram or per kilo at every size above the smallest. So for most lines, cash in the bank wins.
₹249.00
saved by buying six months of an example candle basket at once, against ₹79,971.00 of extra average cash tied up · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should I keep cash or buy larger quantities of raw materials? Keep the cash unless the listed price per unit drops by more than the cost of holding the stock. On CSI's catalogue it rarely does. An example six-month basket of wax, four oils, wicks and jars saves ₹249.00 and ties up about ₹79,971.00 more on average.

What is the break-even formula? Buy ahead only if saving % > carrying rate × (months − 1) ÷ 24. At an example 18% a year, six months must save more than 3.75%; three months more than 1.50%.

Does CSI give lower prices for bigger packs? Rarely on wax, wicks and oils. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and 5 kg (₹599.90 at 10 kg); CSI 464 ₹507.40 at every size; Eco wicks ₹5.90 each. 52 of 91 oils cost within 1% per gram at 1 kg and 100 g. Larger volumes are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.

Where does bulk buying pay? Where the listed per-unit price falls sharply: Citronella 62.3% at 1 kg, Honeydew Melon 22.0%, the 200 ml Salsa jar 26.5% at 50. Even then, the saving is usually at a pack size, not at a number of months.
The short answer
Formula: Extra average stock from buying M months at once ≈ (M − 1) ÷ 2 months of spend. Worth it only if saving % > carrying rate × (M − 1) ÷ 24.
Worked: Example basket ₹31,988.40 a month. Six months bought monthly: ₹1,91,930.40; bought at once in the largest packs: ₹1,91,681.40. Saving ₹249.00; example carrying cost ₹7,197.39.
Exceptions: Real listed breaks: Citronella 62.3%, Salsa jar 26.5%, Honeydew Melon 22.0%, Mini Glass Jars 18.2%, British Rose 10.3%, Natural Soy Pearl 5.6%.

CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026 (oils, wax); jars and wicks as listed.
Each bar is the listed per-unit saving from a sensible small production pack to the largest listed pack of the same item. The dashed line is what a six-month bulk buy must save to beat keeping the cash at an example carrying rate of 18% a year. Only a handful of lines clear it, and for the wax and wick lines most makers use the bar is zero, or slightly negative.
Straight answer
Should I keep more money in cash or use it to buy larger quantities of candle raw materials at better prices?
Keep the cash unless the listed price per unit genuinely falls by more than the stock costs you to hold. The test is simple: buy M months at once only if the saving % is greater than your carrying rate × (M − 1) ÷ 24. At an example carrying rate of 18% a year, six months ahead must save more than 3.75%. On CSI's listed prices most lines save nothing like that. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kilo at 1 kg and 5 kg and ₹599.90 at 10 kg; CSI 464 is ₹507.40 at every size; Eco Thin C1 wicks are ₹5.90 each at every pack; and for 52 of 91 oils the 1 kg costs within 1% per gram of the 100 g. Price an example monthly basket of 30 kg of wax, four oils, 150 wicks and 150 jars both ways and six months bought at once saves ₹249.00, while tying up about ₹79,971.00 more on average, which costs about ₹7,197.39 over the six months at the example rate. The exceptions are real but few: Citronella (62.3% cheaper per gram at 1 kg), the 200 ml Salsa jar (26.5% at 50) and a handful of others. Take those at the pack size, not months ahead. Volume beyond listed packs is quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published.
One line: a bigger pack at the same rate buys a fuller shelf, not a lower price.
The honest headline on wax: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost ₹599.00 for 1 kg, ₹2,995.00 for 5 kg and ₹5,999.00 for 10 kg. That is ₹599.00, ₹599.00 and ₹599.90 a kilo. Buying the 10 kg saves nothing, and costs fractionally more. Buy the wax your next cycle needs; keep the rest of the cash.

What "better prices" means on a flat catalogue

A bigger pack is only a better price if the price per gram is lower. Check that before you check anything else.

The question assumes that larger quantities come at better prices. For many suppliers they do. On CSI's listed catalogue, for most of what a candle business buys every month, they do not. That is not a sales pitch; it is what the listed prices show, and it changes the answer to this question almost entirely. Here is the pattern across the catalogue, from the live pull on 24 September 2026:

CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026 (oils, wax) · wick and jar figures as listed
Does a bigger pack cost less per unit?
Line Per unit, smaller pack Per unit, largest pack Change What bigger buys you
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks ₹599.00 / kg (1 kg, 5 kg) ₹599.90 / kg (10 kg) +0.2% Fewer bags; not a lower rate
Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 ₹507.40 / kg (1 kg) ₹507.40 / kg (10 kg) 0% Fewer bags
Natural Soy Pearl Wax ₹450.00 / kg (1 kg) ₹424.80 / kg (5, 10, 50 kg) −5.6% from 5 kg A real break, fully captured at 5 kg
Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 ₹650.00 / kg (1 kg) ₹637.00 / kg (5, 10 kg) −2.0% from 5 kg A small break at 5 kg
Eco Thin C1 wicks ₹5.90 (10) ₹5.90 (1,000) 0% Fewer reorders
Cotton Braided Wicks ₹12.00 (10) ₹12.00 (1,000) 0% Fewer reorders
Fragrance oils, 100 g → 1 kg — — 52 of 91 within ±1% Stock security on proven scents
Fragrance oils, 15 g → 100 g — — median 23.1% dearer at 15 g The one reliable oil step

The oil figures deserve a second look, because oils are where makers most often assume the kilo is the cheap way to buy. Of 91 oils listing both 100 g and 1 kg, 52 are within 1% per gram. Only 24 save 5% or more at the kilo, and three, including Love Spell and Pomegranate Splash, cost fractionally more per gram at 1 kg. The reliable price step is at the bottom: 15 g testers carry a median 23.1% premium per gram over the same oil's 100 g. So once a scent is in production at 100 g, moving up to the kilo mostly buys convenience.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more if we told you big packs are the smart money. Our own listed prices say otherwise for most wax, wicks and oils. For those lines, holding your cash and ordering each cycle costs you nothing extra per unit. The bigger pack is worth it for stock security on a proven line, or for the specific items with a real break, which this page names. For anything beyond the listed packs, ask us for a quote on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published, so do not plan around one you have not been quoted.

Six months of one basket, priced both ways

Here is an example business's monthly basket: 30 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 500 g each of four oils, 150 Eco Thin C1 wicks and 150 200 ml Salsa jars, which is ₹31,988.40 a month. The owner has spare cash and is considering buying six months at once in the largest listed packs. Here is what each line costs bought monthly and bought at once:

Example basket · monthly at the pack each month needs vs six months at once in the largest packs · CSI prices
Six months, two ways
Line Monthly order Per month Six months, monthly Six months at once Cost at once Saving Saving %
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 30 kg = 6 × 5 kg ₹17,970.00 ₹1,07,820.00 180 kg = 18 × 10 kg ₹1,07,982.00 -₹162.00 -0.2%
Mango Coconut 500 g = 1 × 500 g ₹1,982.00 ₹11,892.00 3 kg = 3 × 1 kg ₹11,892.00 ₹0.00 0.0%
British Rose 500 g = 1 × 500 g ₹1,593.00 ₹9,558.00 3 kg = 3 × 1 kg ₹9,204.00 ₹354.00 3.7%
Lavender 500 g = 1 × 500 g ₹2,620.00 ₹15,720.00 3 kg = 3 × 1 kg ₹15,663.00 ₹57.00 0.4%
Sandalwood 500 g = 1 × 500 g ₹2,513.40 ₹15,080.40 3 kg = 3 × 1 kg ₹15,080.40 ₹0.00 0.0%
Eco Thin C1 wicks 150 = 100 + 50 ₹885.00 ₹5,310.00 900 = 9 × 100 ₹5,310.00 ₹0.00 0.0%
200 ml Salsa jars 150 = 3 × 50 ₹4,425.00 ₹26,550.00 900 = 9 × 100 ₹26,550.00 ₹0.00 0.0%
Total ₹31,988.40 ₹1,91,930.40 ₹1,91,681.40 ₹249.00 0.13%

The whole six-month bulk buy saves ₹249.00, 0.13% of the spend. British Rose, whose kilo is cheaper per gram than its 500 g, saves ₹354.00; the wax gives ₹162.00 of that back. Lavender saves a few rupees. Mango Coconut and Sandalwood save nothing, because their 500 g already costs the same per gram as the kilo. The wax costs more in 10 kg bags than in 5 kg bags. The wicks and jars save nothing, because the monthly order is already at the lowest listed per-unit price.

Example carrying rate 18% a year — replace with your own cost of money, storage and risk
What the saving costs in cash
Item Working Amount
Paid up front six months in the largest packs ₹1,91,681.40
Extra average stock (6 − 1) ÷ 2 × ₹31,988.40 ₹79,971.00
Carrying cost over six months ₹79,971.00 × 18% × 6/12 ₹7,197.39
Listed saving from the table above ₹249.00
Net saving − carrying cost -₹6,948.39

At the example rate, the bulk buy loses about ₹6,948.39 over six months before counting a single scent that stops selling, a jar that chips in storage, or the order you could not fund because the cash was on the shelf. If your cost of money is lower, say 12% a year, the carrying cost falls to ₹4,798.26, still many times the saving. The carrying rate is yours to set; the conclusion holds across any plausible figure because the saving is so small.

A pack-size break is not a months-ahead break
The Salsa jar shows the difference. If this business had been buying its 150 jars in 5-packs, it would pay ₹6,018.00 a month; in 50-packs it pays ₹4,425.00, saving ₹1,593.00 every month without holding any extra stock. That is the saving worth chasing: move each line to the cheapest pack its monthly usage can fill, then stop.

The break-even formula

For any line you are tempted to buy ahead, one line of arithmetic settles it. If you buy M months at once instead of monthly, your average stock of that line rises by roughly (M − 1) ÷ 2 months of spend. Holding that costs your carrying rate. Over a year the bulk route saves s × 12 months of spend and costs r × (M − 1) ÷ 2 months of spend. The saving wins only when:

The CSI principle
Saving % > carrying rate × (months − 1) ÷ 24
Carrying rate is the yearly cost of holding stock: what your money costs or could earn, plus storage, damage and the risk the stock is never used. Set your own. The formula tells you the minimum listed saving a bulk buy must deliver before it beats keeping the cash.
Minimum saving needed · carrying rates are examples, not market rates
How much a bulk buy must save
Buying ahead At 12% a year At 18% a year At 30% a year
2 months 0.50% 0.75% 1.25%
3 months 1.00% 1.50% 2.50%
6 months 2.50% 3.75% 6.25%
12 months 5.50% 8.25% 13.75%

Two things follow. First, short horizons need small savings: buying two months at once needs about 1% or less at any of these rates, which is why simply rounding an order up to a convenient pack is harmless. Second, long horizons need large savings: twelve months ahead needs 5.50% to 13.75%, and on CSI's listed prices only a few lines offer that. The formula also assumes you use every gram. If there is any real chance a scent stops selling, the saving has to be bigger still. My Supplier Gives Better Prices for Larger Orders but I'm Worried About Dead Stock — How Do I Decide the Maximum Inventory Worth Holding? builds that risk into a maximum quantity, and My Supplier Offers a Discount if I Buy More Fragrance Oil — How Do I Calculate Whether the Discount Is Worth the Risk of Slow-Moving Inventory? applies the same test to a supplier's percentage discount offer.

Where bulk clears the bar

A handful of lines really are cheaper in bigger packs. They are worth knowing by name.

The diagram at the top of this page ranks eleven lines by their listed saving. The ones that clear a six-month break-even at an example 18% a year are the big oil breaks and the jars. Here are three worth a closer look, one of each kind.

1
Fresh / herbal · the largest listed 1 kg saving
Citronella Fragrance Oil
The single biggest per-gram break in the collection: ₹7.67 a gram at 100 g, ₹2.95 at 500 g and ₹2.89 at 1 kg, a 62.3% saving at the kilo. For a scent you use steadily, buying the 500 g or kilo clears any reasonable break-even. The break is essentially at 500 g, so a 500 g buyer already has almost all of it.
Pack Price Per gram Saving vs 100 g
15 g ₹141.60 ₹9.44 —
50 g ₹383.50 ₹7.67 0%
100 g ₹767.00 ₹7.67 —

2
Soy wax · real 5 kg break
Natural Soy Pearl Wax
The only listed soy wax with a real pack break: ₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 from 5 kg. The saving is fully captured at 5 kg; the 10 kg and 50 kg packs cost exactly the same per kilo. So buy it in 5 kg multiples at your cycle, and never months ahead for the price. No fragrance ceiling is quoted in this series; check the product page.
Pack Price Per kg Saving vs 1 kg
1 kg ₹450.00 ₹450.00 —
5 kg ₹2,124.00 ₹424.80 5.6%
10 kg ₹4,248.00 ₹424.80 5.6%
50 kg ₹21,240.00 ₹424.80 5.6%

3
Container soy wax · flat, 10 kg fractionally dearer
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks
The counter-example. Rated up to 13% fragrance load by the wax maker, and priced flat: the 10 kg pack is ₹0.90 a kilo dearer than the 5 kg. A six-month buy of 180 kg in 10 kg bags costs ₹162.00 more than the same wax bought monthly in 5 kg bags.
Pack Price Per kg Saving vs 1 kg
500 g ₹299.00 ₹598.00 —
1 kg ₹599.00 ₹599.00 —
5 kg ₹2,995.00 ₹599.00 0.0%
10 kg ₹5,999.00 ₹599.90 −0.2%
₹110.22 of wax per 200 g candle at 8%, whatever pack you buy Buy Luxury Soy Wax Chunks

Jars are the other place bulk pays, and the break is at a pack size. The 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar drops from ₹40.12 each in 5s to ₹29.50 in 50s, and the black Mini Glass Jars from ₹25.96 in 5s to ₹21.24 in 100s. If your monthly usage fills the larger pack, buy it. If it does not, the question is whether the saving clears the formula for the months it will take you to use it, and whether the jar is proven: an untested jar is never worth buying in bulk.

The kilo that felt cheaper. A maker buys a kilo of Sandalwood because "bigger is cheaper". The 100 g is ₹502.68 and the kilo ₹5,026.80: exactly the same ₹5.03 a gram. At 400 g a month, the kilo is about ten weeks of stock, bought at no saving, with ₹3,016.08 more cash out of the bank than a month of 100 g bottles would need. Always divide before you buy.
Buying beyond the listed packs? Wax packs stop at 10 kg (Natural Soy Pearl at 50 kg) and oils at 1 kg. For larger quantities, message us on WhatsApp for a quote. No volume discount figure is published, so run any quote through the break-even formula above before committing cash. Diwali is 8 November 2026; festive quantities are worth quoting now.

Good reasons to hold more anyway

Price is not the only reason to hold stock. There are three good reasons to hold more than one cycle even when the listed price is flat, and each has its own limit.

Stock security on a proven line. If a scent carries your range and a stock-out would lose sales you cannot recover, a larger pack reduces how often you are exposed. Sizes do go out of stock: on the pull date, for example, the Vetiver 1 kg and the Chocolate Fudge 100 g were unavailable. That is a reason to hold a larger safety stock on your A scents, sized as I Have Enough Raw Materials for 500 Candles but Sales Are Growing Unpredictably — How Much Safety Stock Should I Maintain? explains, not to buy months ahead of everything.

A known event. Diwali on 8 November and the November–February wedding season are forecastable peaks. Building stock ahead of them is planning, not bulk buying, and My Candle Sales Double During Diwali — How Early Should I Start Increasing Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick and Jar Inventory Before the Season? covers how early to start. The formula still applies to anything beyond the event's needs.

Ordering cost. Every order takes your time and may carry a delivery charge. If those are high, fewer, larger orders can be cheaper overall even at a flat price. That is a separate calculation with your own figures, and I'm Paying Shipping Separately Every Time I Reorder Small Quantities — How Do I Calculate Whether Larger Raw-Material Orders Would Actually be Cheaper? works through it. Most makers find that monthly orders already capture most of the benefit.

1
Divide every pack price by its sizePer gram, per kilo, per wick, per jar. Do it for each pack you might buy.
2
Move each line to the cheapest pack your month can fillThis captures pack-size breaks, like the Salsa jar's 50-pack or Natural Soy Pearl's 5 kg, without holding extra stock.
3
For anything beyond that, compute the saving %Largest pack's per-unit price against the pack your month already fills.
4
Set your carrying rateWhat your money costs or could earn, plus a margin for storage, damage and unsold stock. Write it down.
5
Apply the formulaSaving % > carrying rate × (months − 1) ÷ 24. If not, keep the cash.
6
Check the risk the stock is never usedIf a scent might stop selling, require a bigger saving still. My Supplier Gives Better Prices for Larger Orders but I'm Worried About Dead Stock — How Do I Decide the Maximum Inventory Worth Holding? sets the ceiling.
Divide before you buy. A kilo at the same rate as ten 100 g bottles is not a bargain. It is ten bottles you paid for early.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A supplier gains when customers buy months ahead. This page shows, from our own listed prices, that most of our wax, wicks and oils cost the same per unit at every size above the smallest, so for most lines holding cash costs you nothing. It also names the lines where a bigger pack genuinely saves money.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; jar and wick prices are as listed on the product pages (Eco wicks verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026). Catalogue statistics (52 of 91 oils within ±1% at 1 kg vs 100 g; 24 with a saving of 5% or more; a median 23.1% premium at 15 g) come from the same pull. Savings, break-evens and carrying costs are arithmetic on those prices, shown so you can check them.

The monthly basket, the six-month horizon and the 12%, 18% and 30% carrying rates are illustrative assumptions, not market rates or CSI figures. Replace them with your own. For quotes beyond the listed packs, GST invoicing or product documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to buy candle supplies in bulk?
Only where the listed price per unit falls. At CSI, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, CSI 464 and Eco wicks are flat per unit, and 52 of 91 oils cost within 1% per gram at 1 kg and 100 g. Citronella, Honeydew Melon, the Salsa jar and a few others have real breaks.
How do I know if a bulk discount is worth it?
Compare the saving % with your carrying rate × (months of stock − 1) ÷ 24. At an example 18% a year, buying six months must save more than 3.75%. Add a margin for any risk the stock is not used.
Should I buy six months of candle wax at once?
Not for price on CSI's listed wax: Chunks and CSI 464 are flat per kilo, and Chunks' 10 kg is fractionally dearer. Buy the cycle; the example six-month basket saves ₹249.00 while tying up about ₹79,971.00 more on average.
Is a 1 kg fragrance oil cheaper than 100 g at CSI?
For most oils, not meaningfully. 52 of 91 are within 1% per gram; 24 save 5% or more, led by Citronella (62.3%), Honeydew Melon (22.0%) and Mango Coconut (20.7%). A few cost fractionally more at 1 kg. Always divide before you buy.
What carrying rate should I use for inventory?
Your own: what your money costs (a loan's interest) or could earn, plus storage, damage and the risk of unsold stock. This page uses 12%, 18% and 30% a year only as examples.
Does CSI give volume discounts?
Listed prices are on the product pages for every pack size. Quantities beyond the listed packs are quoted on WhatsApp; no discount figure is published, so ask with your quantities rather than assuming one.
Divide before you buy
Buy the cycle at the cheapest pack it fills. Keep the rest of the cash unless the formula says otherwise.

Non-price figures and assumptions: The monthly basket (30 kg Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 500 g each of Mango Coconut, British Rose, Lavender and Sandalwood, 150 Eco Thin C1 wicks, 150 Salsa jars = ₹31,988.40) and the six-month horizon are illustrative. Extra average stock from buying M months at once ≈ (M − 1) ÷ 2 months of spend; break-even saving = carrying rate × (M − 1) ÷ 24. Carrying rates of 12%, 18% and 30% a year are examples, not market rates. Per-candle figures assume a 200 g candle at an 8% load (16 g oil, 184 g wax). Luxury Soy Wax Chunks' 13% is the wax maker's stated formulation maximum, not a regulatory limit. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
