Lock the wax, jar and wick, then decide how the remaining rupees split between fragrance oil and the box.
₹109.59
example pot for fragrance oil plus packaging at ₹799 and 65% margin
Quick answers — read this first
How much can I spend on fragrance in a ₹799 candle? At an example 65% margin with CSI 464, a matte jar and Eco C1, oil and packaging share ₹109.59. With a ₹60 box, oil can cost up to ₹49.59 per 16 g.

Which CSI oils fit a ₹60 box at ₹799? At 1 kg prices, Citrus Lemon, British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint fit. Woody Oud, Sandalwood and Lavender need a cheaper box or a lower margin.

Does Dark Vanilla fit a ₹799 candle? Not at 8% in this build with a 65% margin. 16 g costs ₹122.34, which is ₹12.75 over the shared pot before any packaging.

What does an extra 1% of load cost? On a 200 g candle, about ₹9.43 with Lavender and ₹14.28 with Dark Vanilla, because 2 g of oil replaces 2 g of CSI 464.
The short answer
Shared pot: ₹799 × 0.35 − ₹170.06 fixed costs = ₹109.59 for oil and packaging together.
Oil ceiling with ₹60 box: ₹49.59 per 16 g, about ₹3,099 per kg.
Upgrade cost: Switching to CSI 468 cuts the shared pot to ₹85.74.
Packaging allowance left after 16 g of oil (₹109.59 pot)Citrus Lemon₹64British Rose₹60Jasmine₹47Woody Oud₹37Sandalwood₹29Lavender₹26
The dearer the oil, the less is left for packaging at the example 65% margin; Dark Vanilla is over the pot before packaging.
Straight answer
I Want to Make a ₹799 Premium Candle — How Much Can I Reasonably Spend on Fragrance Oil and Packaging While Maintaining My Target Gross Margin?
Treat fragrance oil and packaging as one budget. With ₹799 taken as net of GST and an example 65% gross margin, total cost per candle can be ₹279.65. A 200 g candle in CSI 464 with a matte 200 ml jar and an Eco C1 wick costs ₹170.06 before fragrance, which leaves ₹109.59 for oil and packaging together. With a ₹60 box, the oil can cost no more than about ₹3,099 per kg, so British Rose, Citrus Lemon and Eucalyptus Spearmint fit. A woody or gourmand oil needs simpler packaging, a lower margin or a higher price.
One line: at ₹799 the oil and the box draw on the same ₹109.59 example pot, so pick which one carries the premium.
British Rose at ₹3,068.00 per kg costs ₹49.09 per 200 g candle at 8%, leaving room for a gift box at ₹799.

Fragrance and packaging share one pot of money

At ₹799 the question is not how much oil you can afford. It is how the oil and the box split the same rupees.

A premium candle at ₹799 has two costs that the customer notices straight away: what it smells like and what it arrives in. Everything else, the wax, the wick, the glass, is either invisible or quickly taken for granted. So the useful way to plan a ₹799 candle is to lock the boring parts first, work out what is left under your margin target, and then decide how that remainder is shared between fragrance oil and packaging.

How GST is handled here: the ₹799 in every calculation below is the net amount per candle after GST is removed. A GST-inclusive ₹799 would leave you less, so if that is your situation, strip out your applicable rate before using these numbers. All CSI material prices are as listed on the store in October 2026.

The fixed part of the candle

The example product is a 200 g candle in the matte 200 ml glass jar, poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with an Eco C1 wick, at an 8% fragrance load measured against total candle weight. That gives 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. The fixed costs are wax 184 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36, jar ₹70.80 and wick ₹5.90, a total of ₹170.06 before any fragrance.

The ceiling

Assume a target gross margin of 65%. That figure is the reader's own example, chosen because premium candles usually need more headroom than a ₹499 line. The total allowable cost per candle is ₹799 × 0.35 = ₹279.65. Subtract the fixed ₹170.06 and you have ₹109.59 to divide between fragrance oil and packaging.

How much packaging each oil leaves you

The table prices 16 g of each oil at its 1 kg rate and shows the packaging allowance that remains inside the ₹109.59 pot. It is the fastest way to see which oils suit a ₹799 product with a gift box and which only work with simpler packaging.

Oil vs packaging trade-off
200 g, CSI 464, matte jar, Eco C1, 8% load, 65% example margin (excludes labour, shipping and GST)
Fragrance oil (1 kg price) 16 g costs Packaging allowance left Fits a ₹60 box?
Citrus Lemon (₹2,832.00) ₹45.31 ₹109.59 − ₹45.31 = ₹64.28 Yes
British Rose (₹3,068.00) ₹49.09 ₹60.50 Yes, just
Jasmine (₹3,923.00) ₹62.77 ₹46.82 No
Woody Oud (₹4,531.20) ₹72.50 ₹37.09 No
Sandalwood (₹5,026.80) ₹80.43 ₹29.16 No
Lavender (₹5,221.00) ₹83.54 ₹26.05 No
Dark Vanilla (₹7,646.00) ₹122.34 ₹109.59 − ₹122.34 = −₹12.75 No, over the ceiling before packaging

A ₹60 packaging quote, which is again your figure, means the oil can cost no more than ₹109.59 − ₹60 = ₹49.59 for 16 g. Divide by 16 and the oil must cost ₹3.10 per gram or less (₹49.59 ÷ 16 = ₹3.0994), which is roughly ₹3,099 per kg. Only Citrus Lemon, British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3,068.00 per kg) sit under that line among the oils in this table.

That is not an argument for lemon-and-rose-only premium candles. It is a signal that a ₹799 candle with a rich gift box and a woody or gourmand oil is a margin conflict, and you have to choose which one carries the premium.

Three ways to resolve the conflict

Option 1: spend on the oil, keep packaging simple

If the scent is the product, give it the money. Woody Oud at 8% leaves ₹37.09 for packaging. A sturdy sleeve and label may fit inside that; a rigid box with an insert probably will not. The customer smells the oil every time they light the candle and sees the box once.

Option 2: spend on packaging, choose a lower-cost oil

If your channel is gifting, the unboxing may genuinely matter more. Then choose an oil from the top of the table and test it hard so it still performs. British Rose states up to 10% in soy, has 0% vanillin and a flashpoint of 192°C; Citrus Lemon's page suggests the upper end of its range because citrus top notes fade faster than warmer families.

Option 3: change the load, not the oil

Each extra percentage point of load on a 200 g candle swaps 2 g of wax for 2 g of oil. With Lavender that adds 2 × (₹5.221 − ₹0.5074) = ₹9.43 per point; with Dark Vanilla it adds 2 × (₹7.646 − ₹0.5074) = ₹14.28. Going the other way, from 8% to 7%, gives those amounts back. Use this only if burn tests show the lower load still throws well enough, because a weaker candle is a poor trade for a nicer box.

The wax upgrade costs more than you think
Moving the fixed build from CSI 464 to Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at 184 g raises wax from ₹93.36 to ₹117.21 (184 × ₹0.637 at the 10 kg rate). That shrinks the shared pot from ₹109.59 to ₹85.74. If you upgrade the wax, prove in your own tests that customers can notice it.
Assuming the 15 g price is the real price. Testing with 15 g or 50 g bottles is right, but cost the candle at the pack size you will actually buy. Lavender at 50 g is ₹270.00, or ₹5.40 per gram, against ₹5.221 at 1 kg. On 16 g that is ₹2.86 of difference per candle.

Test the shortlist before you commit

Once you have picked a direction, test two or three oils from the right part of the table in the same jar, wax and wick, so the only variable is the fragrance. Four candles per oil is a suggested starting point: two for burn tests, two kept back for cold-throw checks.

1
Buy small and identical.Use the same matte jar colour, CSI 464 and Eco C1 for every oil. Keep an Eco C2 10-pack at ₹94.40 for a second wick round.
2
Pour at 8%.For each 200 g candle weigh 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. Add the oil comfortably below its published flashpoint, and do not run the melter at its maximum setting.
3
Cure to the stated minimum. Most of these product pages state 48–72 h for soy. Re-check cold throw at days 7 and 14 as a suggested schedule.
4
Burn each candle attended. One to two hours per session on a heat-safe surface is a suggested starting point. Put out any candle that smokes, flares or sends the flame climbing.
5
Price the winner at pack size.Recalculate with the 1 kg price and your real packaging quote, then confirm the margin is still 65%.

Buy this to test, then buy this once validated

The test list assumes three oils from the table: British Rose for a gifting build, Woody Oud for a scent-led build and Citrus Lemon as a low-cost reference. The production list assumes British Rose won and you are making 100 candles.

Production Eco C1 wicks 100 ₹590.00 Or Eco C2 at ₹944.00 if it won

Test spend: ₹1,522.20 + ₹342.20 + ₹453.12 + ₹300.00 + ₹1,062.00 + ₹118.00 + ₹94.40 = ₹3,891.92. The 100-unit production order comes to ₹22,313.80 (₹9,640.60 + ₹5,003.20 + ₹7,080.00 + ₹590.00), or about ₹223.14 per candle in materials, before packaging. Because CSI 464 costs the same per kg at every pack, you can split that 19 kg across whatever bag sizes are easiest to store.

Keep the decision honest. If every test candle smells better with Woody Oud and customers in your channel do not care about the box, take Option 1 and stop paying for packaging nobody keeps.

Do not upgrade our wax to justify ₹799 unless your customers can tell.
Moving to CSI 468 costs ₹23.85 per candle in this build and shrinks the pot for oil and box to ₹85.74. Spend that money where the customer will notice it.
The customer smells the oil every evening and sees the box once.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of a ₹799 candle price should go on fragrance oil?
There is no fixed share. In this example, 16 g of oil ranges from ₹45.31 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹122.34 (Dark Vanilla), or about 6% to 15% of ₹799. Your margin target and packaging quote decide which end you can afford.
How do I calculate gross margin for a candle?
Subtract materials and packaging from your net selling price, then divide by the net price. For ₹799 ex-GST, ₹170.06 fixed materials, ₹49.09 British Rose and ₹60 packaging, the margin is (₹799 − ₹279.15) ÷ ₹799 = 65.06%.
Can I use an oud fragrance in a ₹799 candle?
Yes, if packaging is modest. Woody Oud at 8% costs ₹72.50 per 200 g candle and leaves ₹37.09 for packaging at a 65% example margin. A richer box means accepting a lower margin.
Is it better to spend more on packaging or fragrance for a premium candle?
It depends on your channel. Scent is experienced every burn, packaging once. For gifting, packaging may matter more; then choose an oil that costs less per gram and test it thoroughly.
Should I cost my candle at the sample price or the bulk price?
Test with small packs but cost the product at the pack size you will buy for production. Lavender is ₹5.40 per gram at 50 g and ₹5.221 at 1 kg.
Does reducing fragrance load from 8% to 7% save much money?
On a 200 g candle in CSI 464 it saves about ₹9.43 with Lavender and ₹14.28 with Dark Vanilla. Only make that change if burn tests show the throw remains good enough.
