Cost per Candle · ₹399 Ceiling
At ₹399 the formula has to be designed to the price, not the other way round. Start from the selling price, take off everything that is not materials, take off what you need to keep, and the remainder is your ceiling. Then find a candle that fits under it.
₹166.50
materials ceiling for a ₹399 candle if you want to keep ₹150.00 after example fees, labour and packaging · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What is the maximum material cost for a ₹399 candle? It depends on what you need to keep. With example fees, shipping supplies, labour and breakage of ₹56.00 and example packaging of ₹26.50: keep ₹120.00 and the ceiling is ₹196.50; keep ₹150.00 and it is ₹166.50; keep ₹180.00 and it is ₹136.50.

Can a 200 g glass-jar soy candle work at ₹399? In a White Matte jar with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, no — materials alone are ₹238.45 with the cheapest oil. In a lug-capped Salsa jar with Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Citrus Lemon, ₹163.81, which fits the ₹120 and ₹150 targets but not ₹180.

What about a smaller candle? An 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin with CSI 464 and Royal Apricot costs ₹103.10 in materials and fits every target. It is less candle for the money, which is a positioning decision, not only a cost one.

How expensive an oil can I afford? In the 200 g Salsa build with CSI 464, the ceiling allows up to ₹3.85 a gram of oil to keep ₹120.00, ₹2.04 to keep ₹150.00. The oil cap lists what fits.
The short answer
Formula: Materials ceiling = selling price − per-candle fees, supplies, labour and allowances − packaging − the amount you need to keep. Then design the candle to fit under it.
₹399 ceilings: Keep ₹120.00 → ₹196.50 · keep ₹150.00 → ₹166.50 · keep ₹180.00 → ₹136.50 (example costs ₹56.00 + packaging ₹26.50).
Builds that fit: 200 g Salsa + Soy Pearl + Citrus Lemon ₹163.81 · 85 g tin + CSI 464 + Royal Apricot ₹103.10. The 200 g White Matte build (₹238.45) does not fit.
Working backwards from ₹399 — the materials ceiling depends on what you need left over Keep ₹120.00 ₹120.00 ₹56.00 ₹196.50 materials ceiling ₹196.50 Keep ₹150.00 ₹150.00 ₹56.00 ₹166.50 materials ceiling ₹166.50 Keep ₹180.00 ₹180.00 ₹56.00 ₹136.50 materials ceiling ₹136.50 Order in each bar: kept · fees, shipping supplies, labour, breakage (example ₹56.00) · label, tissue, sleeve (example ₹26.50) · materials ceiling. * example figures
The same ₹399 split three ways. The only thing that changes is the target you keep per candle; the materials ceiling absorbs the difference rupee for rupee. The dashed and grey segments are example figures you replace with your own; if your fees or packaging are higher than ours, the ceiling shrinks by the same amount.
Straight answer
I want to sell a candle at ₹399 — what is the maximum raw-material and packaging cost I should target?
Work backwards from the price. From ₹399 take off the per-candle costs that are not materials — in our example, a ₹10.00 payment fee, ₹18.00 of shipping supplies, ₹20.00 of labour and an ₹8.00 breakage-and-returns allowance (₹56.00). Take off packaging: an example ₹8.00 label, a CSI tissue sheet at ₹6.50 and an example ₹12.00 kraft sleeve (₹26.50). Then decide what you must keep per candle to pay rent, marketing and yourself. Keep ₹150.00 and your materials ceiling is ₹166.50; packaging plus materials together must stay under ₹193.00. A 200 g soy candle in a White Matte jar cannot fit — its materials are ₹238.45 even with the cheapest oil. A 200 g candle in a lug-capped Salsa jar with Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Citrus Lemon fits at ₹163.81. An 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin fits easily at ₹103.10. So at ₹399, choose the container and wax first, then the oil. The full line-by-line method is in the true-cost hub.
One line: at a fixed price, the ceiling is the specification — design the candle to fit it.
The cheapest soy wax line per candle in CSI's range is Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹2,124.00 for 5 kg — ₹78.16 of wax in a 200 g candle at 8%. Its fragrance ceiling is not quoted in this data, so check the product page and run a test pour before you commit a range to it.

Work backwards from ₹399

Cost-plus pricing asks what a candle costs and adds a margin. At a fixed price like ₹399, the question runs the other way: what is the most this candle is allowed to cost?

₹399 is a common price point because it sits under ₹400 and feels like an easy purchase or a small gift. It is also a price where a hand-poured soy candle has very little room, so it is worth designing the product to the number rather than hoping a favourite recipe fits. The method has four steps. Start with the price. Remove every per-candle cost that is not materials or packaging. Remove packaging. Remove the amount you need to keep. What remains is the ceiling for wax, oil, wick, jar and wastage together.

Gross margin on materials + packaging 44.1% 51.6% 59.1%
Markup on materials + packaging 78.9% 106.7% 144.8%

The last two rows show the same ceiling in the two percentages people use. Gross margin is (price − cost) ÷ price; markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost. Keeping ₹150.00 after every example cost means materials plus packaging can take no more than 48.4% of the price — a 51.6% gross margin, or a 106.7% markup, on those two lines. If you prefer to think in simple percentage caps, the table below shows what 30%, 35% and 40% of ₹399 allow.

Materials + packaging as a share of ₹399 · packaging at the example ₹26.50
The same ceiling as a percentage rule
Cap on materials + packaging Rupees Leaves for materials Gross margin on those lines Markup on those lines
30% of price ₹119.70 ₹93.20 70.0% 233.3%
35% of price ₹139.65 ₹113.15 65.0% 185.7%
40% of price ₹159.60 ₹133.10 60.0% 150.0%
Pick the target, not the percentage
Percentage caps are easy to remember but hide what you are keeping. Deciding ‘I need ₹150 from every candle’ ties the ceiling to something real — your fixed costs and the volume you can sell. The ₹499 margin post shows how to turn fixed costs and volume into a per-candle target.

Six real builds against the ceiling

Here are six candles built entirely from CSI's listed wax, oil, wick and container prices, each at an 8% fragrance load with a 4% wastage allowance on wax and oil (a working assumption within the usual 3–5%). The first is the default 200 g candle used across this cluster. The rest change one or two lines at a time to see what it takes to get under ₹399's ceilings.

F ₹106.31 fits fits fits

Build A, the White Matte jar with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, misses every target even with the lowest-priced oil in the catalogue — the jar alone is ₹70.80. That candle belongs at a higher price, which the ₹799 post costs in full. Switching to the lug-capped 200 ml Salsa jar (build B) saves ₹41.30 a candle and includes a closure. Switching the wax to Natural Soy Pearl (build C) saves another ₹15.81. Swapping Citrus Lemon for Peach Melon Berry (build D) adds ₹22.39 and pushes it over every ceiling. The 85 g tins (E and F) fit comfortably at any target.

The Salsa jar's fill weight is not published. A 200 ml jar is a volume, not a weight, and how much finished candle it holds depends on your wax and how high you fill. Weigh one full test pour before you commit a 200 g recipe to it. If it holds less, re-run the build at the real weight — a smaller candle costs less but should also be described and priced honestly.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. The two builds that fit best at ₹399 use our cheapest wax, our cheapest 1 kg oil and our cheapest containers. We would rather sell you Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and a White Matte jar, but at ₹399 they do not work unless you accept keeping very little per candle. If you love that jar, raise the price; do not squeeze the margin to fit it.

The oil cap

Once the container and wax are fixed, the ceiling becomes a maximum price per gram of fragrance. That turns a vague budget into a filter you can apply to the whole catalogue.

Take build B — 200 g, CSI 464, Salsa jar, Eco wick, 4% wastage. Solve for the oil: maximum oil ₹/g = [(ceiling − wick − jar) ÷ 1.04 − wax] ÷ 16 g. The wax line is ₹93.36. Here is what each target allows, and how many of the 73 oils in stock at 1 kg fall under it at the kilo rate.

200 g · CSI 464 · Salsa jar · 16 g oil · oils counted at in-stock 1 kg prices
How dear an oil a ₹399 candle can carry
Target kept Materials ceiling Max oil ₹/g Max oil per candle Oils in stock at 1 kg under the cap
₹120.00 ₹196.50 ₹3.85 ₹61.54 11
₹150.00 ₹166.50 ₹2.04 ₹32.70 0
₹180.00 ₹136.50 ₹0.24 ₹3.85 0

At a ₹150 target the cap is ₹2.04 a gram, and no in-stock oil is that cheap even at the kilo rate — once the CSI 464 wax, wick and jar are paid for, there is not enough left for fragrance. At ₹120, the cap is ₹3.85 a gram, which admits 11 in-stock 1 kg oils, from Citrus Lemon (₹2.83), Citronella (₹2.89), British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3.07 each) through Fresh Strawberries (₹3.54), Royal Apricot (₹3.67) and Orchard Pear (₹3.74). That is why build C swaps the wax: Natural Soy Pearl frees about ₹15 a candle, which is enough to bring the ₹150 target back within reach of the cheapest oils.

Note that these caps use 1 kg rates. Bought at 100 g, most of these oils cost the same or slightly more per gram, but a few cost noticeably more: Honeydew Melon is ₹4.35 a gram at 100 g against ₹3.40 at 1 kg, one of the 24 oils where the kilo is at least 5% cheaper. Per-gram price breaks are rare across the catalogue, so check each oil's own ladder. The load question — whether 7% would do the job of 8% — belongs in the load-reduction post, and should be tested, not assumed.

The CSI principle
At a fixed price, the container and wax set the oil budget.
Most makers choose the scent first and the jar last. At ₹399 that order produces candles that cannot be sold at a profit. Fix the container and wax, compute the cap, then choose the scent from the oils under it.

Designing to the price

1
Write down the price and the amount you must keep₹399 and, say, ₹150. The keep figure comes from fixed costs ÷ realistic monthly volume.
2
List every per-candle cost that is not materialsPayment fee, shipping supplies, labour, breakage and returns allowance — your figures, not ours. Add courier if you offer free shipping.
3
Decide the packaging and cost itA ₹399 candle may not need an outer box. A label, a tissue sheet (₹6.50) and a simple sleeve kept our example at ₹26.50.
4
Compute the materials ceilingPrice − other costs − packaging − keep. That number is the specification.
5
Choose container and wax firstJar or tin is the largest fixed line: White Matte ₹70.80, Salsa with lug cap ₹29.50 from 50, Golden Aluminium Tin ₹30.00. Then wax: Soy Pearl ₹0.42 a gram at 5 kg, CSI 464 ₹0.51, Chunks ₹0.60.
6
Compute the oil cap and shortlist oils under itTest two or three from the 15 g or 50 g sizes before buying a kilo.
7
Burn-test the finished candleWick size for a tin or Salsa jar is not published — confirm it in a burn test. Only then print labels.

A smaller format is the other honest route to ₹399. The 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin costs ₹103.10 in materials with CSI 464 and Royal Apricot, leaving a lot of room at any target. But a ₹399 tin is ₹4.69 per gram of candle, against ₹2.00 for a ₹399 200 g jar. Customers notice size. Whether that positioning works is a product decision; the smaller affordable candle post looks at it from the range-planning side, and the cost-per-gram post explains why small candles cost more per gram to make.

That is ₹160.44 per candle across both formats, before labels and sleeves, and it leaves some wax and oil over. Royal Apricot is bought as three 100 g bottles because at ₹3.67 a gram the kilo is no cheaper and would leave most of it unused. If the tins sell, the next order can go to 1 kg. Wick stickers come in 40s, so 120 cover 86 candles with spares for test pours. Wick size for the tin and the Salsa jar should be confirmed in a burn test before the labels are printed.

At ₹399 you are not choosing a recipe and then a price. You are choosing a price and then the only recipes that survive it.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The builds that fit ₹399 best use our lowest-priced wax, oil and containers. We say so, and we say plainly that our White Matte jar with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks does not fit this price, because a candle that cannot make money at its price is no use to you or to us.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Container, wick, sticker and tissue prices are CSI's listed prices as recorded for this series (Eco wicks and White Matte jar verified 10 September 2026; Salsa jar, Golden Aluminium Tin, stickers and tissue from the 24–25 September pull). Ceilings, caps and totals are plain arithmetic, shown to two decimals.

Payment fee, shipping supplies, labour, breakage allowance, label, sleeve and the amounts kept per candle are examples to replace with your own figures; they are not CSI prices or market rates. Fill weights for the Salsa jar are not published, and wick sizing must be confirmed by burn test. For help building a ₹399 candle, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a ₹399 candle cost to make?
Work backwards: ₹399 minus your per-candle fees, supplies, labour, allowances and packaging, minus what you need to keep. With our example costs, keeping ₹150.00 leaves a materials ceiling of ₹166.50; keeping ₹120.00 leaves ₹196.50.
What percentage of the selling price should materials be?
There is no fixed rule. On ₹399, materials plus packaging at 30% is ₹119.70, at 40% ₹159.60. Better to set the amount you need to keep per candle and derive the ceiling from it.
Which soy wax is cheapest for candles in India?
In CSI's range, Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg, then CSI 464 at ₹507.40 and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00. In a 200 g candle at 8% that is ₹78.16, ₹93.36 and ₹110.22. Test any wax in your jar before switching.
Can I make a profitable candle at ₹399?
Yes, if the container and wax are chosen for the price. A 200 g Salsa-jar candle with Soy Pearl and Citrus Lemon costs ₹163.81 in materials; an 85 g tin with CSI 464 and Royal Apricot ₹103.10. A White Matte jar build (₹238.45) does not fit.
What is the cheapest fragrance oil per candle?
By in-stock 1 kg price, Citrus Lemon at ₹2.83 a gram: ₹45.31 for 16 g. Then Citronella (₹2.89), British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3.07). I'm Comparing Two Fragrance Oils Where One Costs Twice as Much but Works at a Lower Dosage — Which One Is Actually Cheaper per Finished Candle? shows why price per gram is not the whole story if dosages differ.
Should a ₹399 candle have a box?
Only if the ceiling allows it. Our example uses a label, a CSI tissue sheet and a kraft sleeve at ₹26.50. A box at an example ₹30.00 would take ₹30.00 straight off the materials ceiling.
