I Want to Switch Soy Wax Suppliers Without Reformulating My Entire Collection — What Properties Should I Compare Between My Existing and Replacement Wax?
Share
Can I compare from data sheets? Only the paper gate. CSI 468's page gives 13%, 50–53°C melting point and 58–60°C pour; Natural Soy Pearl's gives none. Bench and carry-over properties must be measured.
How many SKUs do I test? Three representative ones: the bestseller, the highest-load formula and one from a different family or load — three candles each per wax, beside controls in the old wax.
What does it cost? ₹3,734.00 in CSI wax, jars and wicks for 18 replacement candles, using your own oil lot and old-wax controls. See the priced kit.
Compare the properties your formulas depend on — in three gates
Switching suppliers without reformulating is a specific goal, and it changes what "compare" means. You do not need the new wax to match the old one on every property a data sheet could list. You need it to match on the properties your existing formulas depend on — so that every SKU's load, wick, jar, pour routine and cure still produce a candle that passes your standard. Those properties fall into three groups, and each group can only be compared one way.
Paper properties are read from the product page and documents: the fragrance ceiling (does it cover your highest-load SKU?), the handling temperatures, the format, the pack sizes and the price. Bench properties are measured with unscented wax in your own jar: fill weight at your fill line, how it melts and pours, how it sets, how its tops and glass adhesion look, its base colour next to the old wax. Carry-over properties can only be measured by pouring your actual formulas in the new wax beside control candles in the old: wick fit, melt pool, flame, jar heat, hot and cold throw, sweating and appearance through cure. A replacement that passes all three gates for a representative set of SKUs is one you can switch to without reformulating.
The example uses two CSI candidates because they make the paper gate vivid. CSI's product page for CSI 468 states a fragrance ceiling of 13%, a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C. The page for Natural Soy Pearl publishes none of these. And CSI 464 — rated up to 10% — fails the paper gate outright for any SKU poured above 10%, before a single candle is made.
The property comparison sheet
Fill this table in for your existing wax and every candidate. The CSI columns show what each product page states; your old wax's column is whatever its supplier published plus what you measure. Where a cell says "measure", no data sheet can answer it for your jar — CSI publishes no melt-behaviour, hardness, colour, adhesion or burn data for its waxes, and neither does it know your old wax.
| Property | Gate | Your existing wax | CSI 468 | Natural Soy Pearl |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance ceiling | Paper | Your supplier's figure | Up to 13% (page) | Not published — ask CSI |
| Pour / handling temperature | Paper | Your current routine | Pour 58–60°C (page) | Not published |

| Fill weight at your fill line | Bench | Your batch-sheet weight | Measure | Measure |

| Set time, tops, sinkholes | Bench | Known | Measure | Measure |
| Glass adhesion, wet spots | Bench | Known | Measure | Measure |

| Wick fit, pool, flame, jar heat | Carry-over | Your approved results | Burn vs control | Burn vs control |
| Hot and cold throw at your loads | Carry-over | Your approved results | Blind vs control | Blind vs control |
| Sweating, frosting through cure | Carry-over | Your approved results | Shelf vs control | Shelf vs control |
The table also makes clear what you cannot compare. A melting point, where one is published, is a single number about a solid wax; it does not tell you how that wax carries your oils or feeds your wick. Why two waxes both called container soy can behave completely differently explains the mechanisms behind that, and why waxes with similar melt points still differ in throw, adhesion and wick needs goes further.
Gate 1: the paper screen against your collection
Run the paper gate SKU by SKU, not wax by wax. The deciding line is almost always the fragrance ceiling against your highest-load formula. In the example collection below — three CSI oils, 200 g candles — the highest-load SKU runs at 12%. That single fact rules a candidate in or out for that SKU before any money is spent on testing.
| SKU | Load | Oil + wax per 200 g | Why it is in the test | CSI 468 (13%) | CSI 464 (10%) | Soy Pearl |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Japanese Cherry Blossom Fragrance Oil | 8% | 16 g + 184 g | Bestseller | Yes (13%) | Yes | Not published — ask CSI |
| Mango Coconut Fragrance Oil | 10% | 20 g + 180 g | Fruity, mid load | Yes (13%) | Yes | Not published — ask CSI |
| Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil | 12% | 24 g + 176 g | Highest load in the range | Yes (13%) | No — above 10% | Not published — ask CSI |
Three outcomes are possible at this gate. A candidate whose ceiling covers every SKU goes on to the bench. A candidate that fails only the highest-load SKU can still replace the old wax for the rest of the range — but that SKU will need reformulating, so the switch is no longer "without reformulating". And a candidate with no published ceiling, like Natural Soy Pearl here, has to be asked: message CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum before planning a 12% formula in it. A reader's own supplier figure of "12%" for the old wax is that supplier's figure; it does not transfer.
Why carry-over has to be tested, not assumed
Each of your approved formulas is a set of choices that worked together in the old wax: a wick that fed the flame the right amount of melted fuel, a load the wax held through cure, a pour temperature that gave clean tops in your jar. In general candle-making practice, the wax affects every one of those: how readily it melts and how fluid the pool is, how it crystallises as it sets and cures, how it holds and releases fragrance. Two waxes can share a label and a price band and still shift those relationships enough to change a wick result or a summer shelf. These are mechanisms commonly described, not CSI measurements.
That is why the carry-over gate pours formulas, not just wax. It also explains the choice of SKUs. The bestseller is in because it carries the most revenue. The highest-load formula is in because it stresses the wax's ability to hold oil. The fruity mid-load formula is in because it is a different oil family and a different load, so the three together sample the range rather than repeat one corner of it. If your collection has a gourmand or a very expensive oil, swap it in; how many fragrance families to test covers that choice in depth.
Carry-over results are per SKU. If two pass and one fails, the replacement is a drop-in for two SKUs and a reformulation for the third. That is still a useful answer; it tells you exactly how much work the switch really is. When one oil fails and others pass shows how to tell an oil problem from a wax problem in that third SKU.
Gates 2 and 3, candle by candle
| Line | Old wax (control) | CSI 468 | Soy Pearl | Pass rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fill weight at your line | ___ g | ___ g | ___ g | Formula recalculated if different |
| Full-pool time / depth | ___ / ___ | ___ / ___ | ___ / ___ | Within your tolerance of control |
| Flame height, mushrooming, soot | ___ | ___ | ___ | Safety: no worse than control |
| Jar reading, same point and minute | ___ | ___ | ___ | Safety: no hotter than control |
| Blind hot throw 0–5 | ___ | ___ | ___ | Equal or better |
| Cold throw 0–5 at your cure | ___ | ___ | ___ | Equal or better |
| Sweating / frosting at 14 days | ___ | ___ | ___ | No worse than control |
| Tops, adhesion, colour | ___ | ___ | ___ | Within your cosmetic standard |
| Carries over unchanged? | — | ___ | ___ | All lines, no formula change |
The control column is essential. Without it you are comparing the new wax with your memory of the old one, and memory always flatters the familiar candle. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit, and this page invents none; the safety rule is no worse than your approved control, within your jar supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to. The objective comparison protocol covers blinding and replicates.
What the switch costs and saves
Price both sides. With an example volume of 400 candles a month across the three SKUs (average 180.0 g of wax per candle, so 72.00 kg a month) and an example existing price of ₹550.00/kg — replace both with your own — the monthly wax bill compares like this at CSI's 10 kg rates.
| Wax | Price per kg | 72.00 kg a month | Difference vs existing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your existing wax (example) | ₹550.00 | ₹39,600.00 | — |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | ₹637.00 | ₹45,864.00 | ₹6,264.00 |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | ₹424.80 | ₹30,585.60 | -₹9,014.40 |
Against that, the carry-over test costs ₹3,734.00 in CSI wax, jars and wicks (plus your own oil and control candles). If a SKU fails carry-over, reformulating it is a separate cost: a six-candle wick bracket for the 12% Blue Ocean formula in CSI 468, for example, uses about ₹1,880.64 of materials at small-pack prices. The point of the gates is to know which of those two bills you are paying before you place the bulk order, not after. What to retest when a supplier is ₹60 a kilo cheaper and the true commercial cost of a wax cover the economics in more depth.
The priced carry-over kit
Per CSI wax: three candles of each SKU at its own load is 1,620 g of wax, 1,701 g with a 5% pour-loss allowance (a working assumption). Control candles use your old wax and your own jars.

The decision rule, and the order you place
| Result | Meaning | What you do and buy |
|---|---|---|
| All SKUs pass all three gates in one candidate | A true drop-in for your collection | Pilot one batch per SKU, then switch; buy the production bag |
| Some SKUs pass, some fail gate 3 | Partial drop-in | Switch the passing SKUs; reformulate the rest (5416) or keep the old wax for them |
| The highest-load SKU fails gate 1 | Ceiling too low for that formula | Choose a candidate whose ceiling covers it, or reformulate that SKU |
| Any safety line worse than control | Not a drop-in for that SKU | Do not switch it; investigate wick first |
If CSI 468 carries all three SKUs over, the production need at the example volume is 72.00 kg a month: 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg (₹45,890.00) covers it — the 10 kg and 5 kg bags are ₹637.00/kg, the 1 kg bag ₹650.00/kg. If Natural Soy Pearl carries them over and CSI confirms a ceiling that covers 12%, 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg (₹30,636.00) covers the month at ₹424.80/kg; the 50 kg bag is the same rate, so it only makes sense if you have the storage and the stock is confirmed on WhatsApp. Larger regular quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no volume discount figure is published. The qualification test is where the passed SKUs and the new wax are written into your approved-material record.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. If you are considering switching to us, we would rather you found out on twenty-seven candles that one SKU needs reformulating than on a production order. We publish no burn, adhesion, colour or hardness data for our waxes, and we know nothing about your old one, so this page quotes our product pages exactly and gives you the test that decides.
