CSI Jar & Container Guides · Lids & Fit
There is no universal millimetre for a wooden lid. Your tolerance is the range of fits your own jars and lids pass, tested loose and tight, before and after humidity. Here is how to find it and write it down.
100
lid-and-jar pairings from ten of each: a first-article fit study for ₹1,500.00 with CSI's bamboo-lid jar · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much tolerance should there be between jar and wooden lid? There is no universal millimetre figure, and we will not invent one. Your tolerance is the range of lid-minus-rim fits that pass a push-and-pull test on your own jars and lids, re-checked after the lids have been through humid and dry conditions.

Which jar dimension matters? The one the lid actually touches. A plug lid with a silicone ring fits the inside of the rim at the depth the ring sits; an overcap fits the outside of the rim; a lid that simply rests fits nothing and needs a flat rim. No CSI listing states an inside rim diameter.

Does wood movement matter? It can. Wood and bamboo take up and give off moisture and change size, generally more across the grain than along it; how much depends on the species, cut and finish. A silicone ring absorbs much of that; bare wood on glass absorbs none of it.

How many should I test? Our judgement: a first-article study of ten jars and ten lids (100 pairings), then about 20 to 30 of each measured per delivery, plus a humidity re-test. Ten Green Iridescent jars with bamboo lids cost ₹1,500.00.
The short answer
The method: measure the rim dimension your lid fits on 20 to 30 jars and the matching lid dimension on 20 to 30 lids; pair the extremes; find the interference range that passes a fit test; re-test after a humid week and a dry week. That range is your specification.
The fit types: plug with silicone ring (the ring's squeeze is your tolerance), plug without ring (the wood itself, most sensitive), overcap (outside rim), resting lid (rim flatness only).
The honest gap: CSI listings give "approximately" outer rims or unspecified diameters, and none states a rim tolerance. The in-stock bamboo-lid jar's page says nothing about the lid's fit.
The safety line: a wooden lid comes off before lighting, stays away from the flame, and goes back only on a cool, extinguished candle. Put that on a sticker.
Your lid tolerance is found, not looked up Invented example readings to show the method, drawn to scale (1 mm = 150 px). Not a standard, not a CSI figure: measure your own jars and lids and let a fit test set the window. 1 · Measure both parts (30 of each, example) 60 mm 60.5 61 mm 61.5 62 mm 62.5 63 mm jar rim, inside 60.4 to 61.6 lid over gasket 62.0 to 62.8 2 · Pair the extremes: lid minus rim = interference loosest pairing: smallest lid in largest rim = 62.0 − 61.6 = 0.4 mm · tightest: largest lid in smallest rim = 62.8 − 60.4 = 2.4 mm 0.0 0.5 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5 3.0 mm every pairing passed the fit test too loose lifts off, rattles too tight needs two hands 3 · Re-test after humidity: the same lids, a humid week later (example: +0.3 mm) shifted pairings If the lids swell, the loose end improves and the tight end gets worse: 2.7 mm now sits further outside the window. Your specification is the pass window (step 2), checked again after humidity (step 3). A gasket widens it; bare wood narrows it. All millimetre values are invented examples. No CSI jar listing states an inside rim diameter or a rim tolerance.
How a lid tolerance is found rather than looked up, on invented example readings drawn to scale. Line 1: the spread of rim and lid measurements across a sample. Line 2: every possible pairing, from the loosest (smallest lid in the largest rim) to the tightest, against the window that passed a hands-on fit test. Line 3: the same pairings after the lids have spent a humid week, showing how swelling pushes the tight end further out. None of these millimetres is a standard or a CSI figure.
Straight answer
I want to use a wooden lid on my candle jar. How much tolerance should there be between jar and lid dimensions for bulk production?
There is no single right number, and anyone who quotes one without seeing your jar, your lid and your ring is guessing. Tolerance for a wooden lid is the range of fits that work on your parts in your conditions, and you find it in four steps. First, identify what the lid touches: a plug lid with a silicone ring fits the inside of the rim at the ring's depth; an overcap fits the outside of the rim; a resting lid fits only a flat rim. Second, measure that dimension on 20 to 30 jars and the matching dimension on 20 to 30 lids, in two directions each, because glass rims are rarely perfectly round and mass-produced glass varies between pieces and batches. Third, pair the extremes (smallest lid in largest rim, largest lid in smallest rim) and push-fit them: note where a lid starts to rattle or lift off, and where it needs two hands or twisting the jar to remove. The range in between is your fit window. Fourth, repeat after the lids have spent a week in humid air and a week in dry air, because wood and bamboo change size with moisture. Specify the window to your lid maker, not a nominal size alone. A silicone ring widens the window a great deal; bare wood on glass narrows it. At CSI, the only jar with a bamboo lid in stock on 26 September 2026 is the Green Iridescent jar (₹150.00); its page states no fit, ring or inside rim figure, so the study starts from samples.
One line: measure what the lid touches on 20 to 30 of each part, pair the extremes, let a fit test set the window, and re-test after humidity.
Run the study on real parts. Ten Green Iridescent jars with bamboo lids cost ₹1,500.00 and give 100 lid-and-jar pairings; ten Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lids (₹944.00) are the metal-lid control. Both in stock on 26 September 2026.

Which jar dimension the lid actually fits

A lot of lid-fit problems start with measuring the wrong diameter.

A jar has at least three diameters that matter to a lid: the outside of the rim, the inside of the rim (at the lip and a few millimetres down), and, for jars with a neck or shoulder, the inside of the neck where a plug might sit. Listings rarely say which one they give. CSI's are typical: the 150 g jars state an "outer rim diameter approximately 7cm", the Apothecary Dome Lid jar a "Diameter (outer rim): Approx. 10 cm", and the Green Iridescent jar just "Diameter - 7cm". None states an inside rim diameter or a tolerance. So the first job is to decide which dimension your lid design touches.

Four ways a wooden lid meets a jar · general, not CSI-specific
What to measure, and where the tolerance lives
Lid type Touches Measure on the jar Measure on the lid Where tolerance lives Humidity sensitivity
Plug lid with a silicone ring Inside wall of the rim Inside diameter at the ring's depth, in two directions Diameter over the uncompressed ring; ring cross-section The ring's squeeze range Lower: the ring takes up small wood movement
Plug lid, bare wood Inside wall of the rim As above Plug diameter, in two directions (across and along the grain) The wood itself Highest: every change in the wood is a change in fit
Overcap (sleeve over the rim) Outside of the rim Outside rim diameter, two directions; rim height Recess diameter and depth; any liner The recess, or a felt or foam liner Medium: a recess can shrink onto the rim or loosen off it
Resting lid Top of the rim Rim flatness; outside diameter for overhang Underside flatness None; it relies on gravity Warping can make it rock

Measure with a vernier or digital calliper, at the same height every time, and always in two directions at right angles: a rim that reads differently across two directions is oval, and an oval rim will grip a plug on two sides and gap on the other two. For a plug lid, measure the lid in two directions as well, one across the grain and one along it; wood can move differently in each. Record everything; averages hide the pairings that fail.

Lid depth is part of the fit
A plug lid sits down inside the rim, so it needs clearance above the wax. Set your fill line from the lid's plug depth plus your headspace, not from the rim alone, or the lid will touch the candle. How much gap to leave is the headspace rule.

Where the variation comes from: glass, wood, ring

The glass. Mass-produced glass varies between pieces and between batches; rims can be slightly oval, slightly thicker on one side, or a little different from one mould cavity to the next. You cannot control it, only measure it and choose what to accept. Batch-to-batch dimension drift in jars is the subject of batch dimension variation.

The wood. Two sources. Machining: how closely your lid maker holds the plug or recess size from lid to lid. Movement: wood and bamboo are hygroscopic, taking up moisture in humid air and giving it off in dry air, and changing size as they do, generally more across the grain than along it. Bamboo lids are often made from laminated strips and are commonly described as more stable than many solid woods, but they still move. A sealed or lacquered finish tends to slow moisture exchange rather than stop it. How much any given lid moves depends on species, cut, finish and where it has been stored; that is why this guide asks you to test rather than trust a rule.

The ring. A silicone ring (often called a gasket) around a plug lid is compressible, so it turns a hard, exact fit into a range of acceptable squeezes. In our judgement it is the most effective single way to widen your tolerance. Specify it properly: ring cross-section, the groove it sits in, and whether it is fixed in the groove or loose. A loose ring can roll out or stay in the jar when the lid comes off. Check the ring does not touch wax; keep it clear with enough headspace.

Too tight is a defect too. One CSI customer's review of our tin containers (four stars) says the tins were "difficult to open" once the candle was made and the lid closed: "its both good point and the same time difficult to work". That is metal, not wood, but it is the point: a lid a customer cannot open with one hand, or has to twist the jar to remove, fails as surely as one that falls off. Your fit test needs a tight limit as well as a loose one.

Finding your fit window: a worked example with invented readings

Every millimetre in this section is made up to show the arithmetic. Your own readings replace all of them.

Suppose you have a plug lid with a silicone ring. You measure the inside rim diameter at ring depth on 30 jars and read 60.4 to 61.6 mm. You measure the lid's diameter over the uncompressed ring on 30 lids and read 62.0 to 62.8 mm. The difference, lid minus rim, is the interference: how much the ring must squeeze.

Worked example · invented readings, not a standard
Pair the extremes, then let the fit test decide
Pairing Lid (mm) Rim (mm) Interference (mm) Example fit-test result
Loosest: smallest lid, largest rim 62.0 61.6 0.4 Lifts off with one finger; rattles when the jar is tapped: fail, too loose
Typical: middle of both spreads 62.4 61.0 1.4 Seats with a push; comes off with one hand: pass
Tightest: largest lid, smallest rim 62.8 60.4 2.4 Needs two hands and twisting the jar: fail, too tight
Window found by testing intermediate pairings 0.8 to 2.0 Every pairing in this range passed

In this invented case, the parts as delivered produce interferences from 0.4 to 2.4 mm, but only 0.8 to 2.0 mm passes, so some pairings at both ends will fail on the production line. You now have four honest options, and each is a decision, not a number from a chart:

Four ways to close the gap · editorial judgement
What each option costs you
Option How it works Cost and catch
Tighten the lid spec Ask the lid maker to hold a narrower plug-over-ring range, centred so worst pairings land inside your window Usually a higher lid price and more lid rejects; needs the maker to measure too
Change the ring A ring with a larger squeeze range, or a different cross-section, widens the window A new sample round; check the ring against your fragrance and headspace
Sort into bands Measure every jar rim and pair small rims with small lids, large with large Labour on every unit; workable for hundreds, painful for thousands
Reject outliers Set aside jars whose rims fall outside a band that always pairs well Wasted jars: worked example, five jars from a fifty-jar delivery at the iridescent price is ₹750.00

For a fit test you can repeat, define it in words before you start: for example, "seats fully with one thumb", "does not lift when the jar is tilted to 45 degrees", "comes off with one hand without the jar moving", "stays on when the packed box is shaken". Use the same person and the same jars each time. Never test by inverting a finished candle or lifting it by the lid.

Humidity: test the lid in the seasons it will live in

A lid that fits in a dry workshop in February can bind in August. Test for the calendar, not the day.

India's southwest monsoon runs roughly June to September; winter, roughly December to February, is drier, particularly in the north, and air-conditioned rooms are drier still. A wooden lid made, stored or fitted in one condition and used in another may move. The direction is what matters: in humid air wood tends to swell, pushing the tight end of your window further out; in dry air it tends to shrink, pushing the loose end out. If lids are machined in humid weather and gifted in December, check the loose end; if they are made in dry weather and sold through the monsoon, check the tight end.

A simple conditioning test, our judgement of a practical minimum: take ten lids, leave five for a week somewhere humid (a closed bathroom, away from direct water) and five for a week somewhere dry (an air-conditioned room), then re-measure them and re-run the fit test on your tightest and loosest jars. In the diagram's invented example the humid lids read 0.3 mm larger, which moves the tightest pairing to 2.7 mm. If a lid passes both conditions, it is ready for the calendar; if it fails either, go back to the four options above. Candles also travel: summer shipping adds heat to humidity, covered in the summer transit guide.

Wood and flame
A wooden lid is combustible. The label should tell customers to remove the lid before lighting, keep it away from the flame, never use it to put the candle out, and replace it only when the candle is extinguished and cool; burn within sight and never leave a candle unattended. A Candle Care Stickers Roll can add care wording to every candle for ₹0.83 each; check a sample's printed wording, and keep the lid instruction on your own label too.

Sampling for bulk production

These quantities are our judgement for a small brand moving into hundreds or low thousands a month, not a sampling standard. For thousands of imported jars, a more formal acceptance-sampling approach is in the imported-jar approval programme.

A three-stage sampling plan · editorial judgement
From first article to every delivery
Stage Jars Lids What you do What you keep
First article 10 10 Measure all; fit every lid to every jar (100 pairings); humidity test on 10 lids The fit window, two golden-sample pairs, photos
First production delivery 20 to 30 20 to 30 Measure; fit the extremes; ten random pairings Readings compared with the first article
Every later delivery 20 to 30 20 to 30 Measure; fit the extremes against the golden samples; a humidity check if the season has changed A running log per batch of glass and of lids

Ten jars for the first article is ₹1,500.00 with the Green Iridescent jar. If you are fitting third-party wooden lids to a CSI jar, ask us on WhatsApp about samples from current stock before your lid maker starts, and plan to measure them yourself: we publish no rim tolerance. Managing lids that fit one batch of jars and not the next, including spec sheets and incoming inspection, is the dimensional-tolerance guide; the wider QC checklist for incoming glass is the glass-jar QC checklist.

What to write in a lid specification

Give your lid maker a specification built from your study, not a single nominal size. The right-hand column is yours to fill from your own measurements and fit tests; we deliberately leave it blank.

Argued against our own interest: CSI does not sell wooden lids or silicone rings on their own, and we cannot give you a rim tolerance for our jars, because we do not publish one. If your design depends on a lid maker's plug fitting our rim, the only reliable path is samples and your own measurements. If you want a lid that arrives already paired with the jar, our in-stock options include the bamboo lid on the Green Iridescent jar and metal lids on the 150 g jars, alongside lug-cap, glass-dome and clip-top jars.

Four products for a lid-fit study

Chosen for a fit study on page wording, price and stock on 26 September 2026. No CSI listing states an inside rim diameter, a rim tolerance or a lid material specification beyond the words quoted.

1
the one in-stock bamboo-lid jar
Green Iridescent jar with bamboo lid - 300g
The page states "300g glass jar, natural bamboo lid. Capacity - 300g Diameter - 7cm Height - 10cm", and nothing about the lid's fit, a silicone ring, or whether 7 cm is the outside or the rim. Its out-of-stock White Iridescent sister says the bamboo lid "ensures a snug fit"; the out-of-stock "Glass Jar With Bamboo Lid" listings claim "Secure Fit: Airtight seal". Those are page claims on jars you cannot buy today, and we would not extend them to this one. It is the jar to run the fit study on if you want a wooden-type lid from CSI: ten jars (₹1,500.00) give 100 lid-and-jar pairings. Ask on WhatsApp about the lid construction and batch depth first. Limitation: single units only; for a larger sample, thirty jars cost ₹4,500.00.
Pack Price Per jar What it covers
Single ₹150.00 ₹150.00 buy ten for a first-article fit study (100 pairings)
₹150.00 per jar with its bamboo lid; ₹55.60 more than the clear 150 g jar with a metal lid. Buy one — ₹150.00
2
the metal-lid baseline to compare against
Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram)
The page's FAQ says the golden metal lid is "included with every jar" and "fits snugly to protect the candle scent between uses". A metal lid does not swell with humidity, so it is a useful control: run the same fit test on ten of these and on your wooden-lid jars, and you will see how much of your variation is the wood. It also states "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" and an "outer rim diameter approximately 7cm"; "approximately" is the word to notice, because the rim is what a lid fits. No pack discount; the 20-pack is two 10-packs.
Pack Price Per jar What it covers
Pack of 10 ₹944.00 ₹94.40 a ten-jar control group for the fit test
Pack of 20 ₹1,888.00 ₹94.40 a production trial if metal wins
₹94.40 per jar, lid included. Buy a pack of 10 — ₹944.00
3
a mechanical closure instead of a friction fit
Reusuable Premium Glass Clip Top Airtight Glass Candle Container
Listed exactly so (the title's "Reusuable" is on the page). The page states "Dimension- 11cm * 11cm * 10cm" without saying which figure is height, "Wax Fill - 550g", and that the "airtight seal locks in fragrance" and the "secure clip top design" prevents spills (page claims; no seal material or test is stated). A clip-top holds its lid with a wire clamp, not with a push fit, so wood movement and rim variation matter less to closure. It is a different, larger candle: 550 g needs its own wick bracket, and the whole lid must be off and clear of the flame before lighting. Limitation: single units only, one size.
Pack Price Per jar What it covers
Single ₹229.00 ₹229.00 one to test closure, fill and burn
₹229.00 per container; a different product, not a lid swap. Buy one — ₹229.00
4
the label that makes the lid safe to use
Candle Care Stickers Roll | Candle Safety Sticker Roll 500 & 1000
The page offers 500 stickers at 1 inch or 1,000 at 1.5 inches per roll and calls them "Candle Care Stickers"; it does not list the printed wording, so check a sample. A wooden lid adds one instruction that matters: take the lid off before lighting and keep it well away from the flame, and put it back only when the candle is out and cool. A care sticker on the base can carry that message on every candle for ₹0.83 to ₹0.70 each, if its printed wording covers lids; check a sample, and put it on your own label either way. Limitation: a sticker supplements your own label wording; it does not replace it.
Pack Price Per sticker What it covers
Pack of 500 (1 inch) ₹413.00 ₹0.83 500 candles
Pack of 1000 (1.5 inch) ₹699.00 ₹0.70 1,000 candles
Less than one rupee per candle; check the printed wording covers lids. Buy 500 stickers — ₹413.00
When the right purchase is nothing: if your current jar and lid already pass the fit test at both ends after a humid and a dry week, do not change either for bulk production; write the specification from what you have and sample every delivery against it.

Timing the study before a festive run

Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, 43 days after these prices were checked. A first-article study with two conditioning weeks takes about three weeks once samples are in hand, so for Diwali production the samples need to arrive in the first days of October. For Christmas (25 December 2026) gifting, the calendar is kinder, and it is worth running the dry-condition test especially carefully: lids that fitted during the monsoon may loosen in winter air. Dispatch is from Pune; confirm stock depth and delivery time on WhatsApp.

Diwali 8 November 2026 or Christmas 25 December 2026: once your fit window is set, order the production jars from one batch so the rims you measured are the rims you get. Send us the quantity and we will quote with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

The CSI principle
A lid tolerance is a range your parts pass, not a number someone tells you.
Measure what the lid touches, pair the extremes, test loose and tight, and repeat after humidity. Then write it down and sample every delivery against it.
"A lid that falls off and a lid that will not come off fail the same customer. Test both ends."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars named here, including the one bamboo-lid jar in stock, and does not sell finished candles, wooden lids or silicone rings. This guide says plainly that we do not publish rim tolerances or inside rim diameters, that our in-stock bamboo-lid jar's page says nothing about fit, and that the "airtight" and "snug fit" claims belong to listings that are out of stock. You need to know that before a lid maker cuts a thousand plugs.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table is in stock that day, and the out-of-stock bamboo-lid listings are named as such. Dimension wording is quoted from product pages; the review quoted is a genuine published Judge.me review.

Every millimetre figure in this guide is an invented example to show the method, not a standard or a CSI figure; the sampling quantities, fit-test wording and conditioning test are editorial judgement; wood-movement statements are general tendencies. Frequently asked questions

What tolerance do I need for a wooden candle lid?
No universal figure applies. Measure the rim dimension your lid touches and the lid on 20 to 30 of each, pair the extremes, and find the range of lid-minus-rim that passes a push-and-pull test; then repeat after a humid week and a dry week. That range is your tolerance.
Why are my wooden candle lids tight in the monsoon and loose in winter?
Wood and bamboo take up moisture in humid air and give it off in dry air, and change size as they do, generally more across the grain. A silicone ring absorbs much of that movement; bare wood on glass does not. Test lids after both conditions before bulk production.
Should I use a silicone ring on a wooden candle lid?
For a plug lid, a ring is usually the most effective way to widen the range of jars and lids that fit, because it compresses. Specify its cross-section and groove, fix it in the groove if you can, and keep it clear of the wax with enough headspace.
Which diameter of the jar should I give my lid maker?
The one the lid touches: the inside of the rim at the ring's depth for a plug lid, the outside of the rim for an overcap. Give a measured range from your samples in two directions, not a single listing figure; CSI listings give outer or unspecified diameters, never inside rims.
How many jars and lids should I test before bulk production?
Our judgement: ten of each for a first-article study, fitting every lid to every jar (100 pairings), then about 20 to 30 of each measured per delivery with the extremes fit-tested. For thousands of imported jars, use a more formal sampling plan.
Is it safe to leave a wooden lid on a burning candle?
No. Remove the lid before lighting, keep it away from the flame, never use it to put the candle out, and replace it only when the candle is out and cool. Put that instruction on the label or a care sticker.

They are general product reviews, not assessments of the container advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Jinal Monil, Soumili Gope, Biny Abraham, Kaushiki Satarkar, Dipali Sable. The reviews from Ashwini are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Listing dimensions are quoted as written ("approximately", outer or unspecified). Sampling quantities, fit-test wording and the one-week conditioning test are editorial judgement; wood-movement statements are general tendencies. Seasons are calendar facts. Costs exclude labour, freight and GST.
