I'm Choosing Between Metal, Wooden and Glass Candle Lids — How Should I Compare Cost, Shipping Weight, Appearance and Fit Consistency?
Share
Which is lightest to ship? Typically metal, then wood, then glass. No CSI listing states a lid weight, so weigh the jar with and without its lid on your scale and see whether the difference crosses your courier's weight step.
Which looks most luxurious? It depends on the product: a gold metal lid reads apothecary, bamboo reads natural, a glass dome reads statement. The lid should match the story the label tells, not outspend it.
Which fits most consistently batch after batch? Threaded lug caps and clip-top seals tend to be most forgiving; press-on metal is rim-dependent; wood can move with humidity; glass on glass has no give at all. Test every delivery whichever you choose.

The comparison on one page
The table uses general material behaviour, hedged as tendencies, plus what CSI's pages state. "Lug cap" is split out because it behaves differently from a press-on metal lid, even though lug caps are commonly metal. Nothing here is a test result: CSI publishes no lid weights, fit tolerances or heat tests.
| Criterion | Press-on or screw metal lid | Threaded lug cap | Wooden or bamboo lid | Glass lid or dome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cost at CSI (per lidded jar) | ₹30.00 (85 g tin) and ₹94.40 (150 g jar) to ₹200.00 (600 g jar) | ₹29.50 to ₹62.00 (200 ml) | ₹150.00 (300 g, one listing in stock) | ₹212.40 and ₹250.00 (500 and 700 gm) |
| Added shipping weight | Usually the lightest | Light | Moderate; varies with thickness | Usually the heaviest, and breakable |
| Appearance | Gold or black reads apothecary; shows dents and scratches | Practical, pantry-like | Warm, natural; grain and colour vary lid to lid | Striking, classic; shows fingerprints and dust |
| Fit consistency | Press-on depends on rim diameter; screw threads more forgiving | Tends to absorb small rim variation | Seal ring helps; wood can move with humidity | No give; rim variation shows as rocking |
| Heat behaviour | Conducts heat; never used on a lit candle | As metal; a liner may soften with heat | Combustible; keep well away from flame | Can crack with sudden temperature change |
| Reuse after the candle | Good; watch for rust on some metals | Good as a storage jar | Good if kept dry; can mark with oil | Excellent; the dome is a keepsake |
The one row the table cannot settle is appearance, because appearance is about fit with the product rather than the lid in isolation. A high-priced gift candle in a lug-cap jar looks underdressed; a market candle under a glass dome looks overpriced. How lids combine with glass, weight and label space to read as premium is the subject of the luxury-presentation guide.
Cost: what CSI's lidded jars cost by lid type
Because CSI sells no lid on its own, the fair comparison is between lidded jars of similar size. Two size classes cover most of CSI's in-stock range.
| Jar | Lid (as the page states it) | Stated capacity | Per jar | Per 100 g capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shiny glass jar (Black, Pink, Amber at ₹47.20; Red, Green, Navy Blue, Purple at ₹50.00) | "golden lid" (Amber: black lid per title), material not stated | "Capacity: 120 gm" | ₹47.20 to ₹50.00 | ₹39.33 (at ₹47.20) |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | "golden metal lid" | "150g fill capacity" | ₹94.40 | ₹62.93 |
| 200ml Salsa clear | 63 mm lug cap, material not stated | "The 200ml capacity" (ml, not g) | ₹40.12 at 5; ₹29.50 at 50+ | Not comparable (ml) |
| Green Iridescent jar | "natural bamboo lid" | "Capacity - 300g" | ₹150.00 | ₹50.00 |
| Apothecary dome-lid jar | "Dome glass lid" | ~500 g / ~700 g | ₹212.40 / ₹250.00 | ₹42.48 / ₹35.71 |
| Clip-top airtight container | clip-top, material not stated | "Wax Fill - 550g" | ₹229.00 | ₹41.64 |
| Borosilicate Glass Jar 600 g | "matte gold metal lid" | "Ideal for 500–600g wax fill" | ₹200.00 | ₹33.33 |
At 500 to 600 g, the lid barely moves the cost
Worked example, a 500 g candle at 8% in CSI 464 (460 g of wax, ₹233.40 at the 10 kg price). In the Borosilicate 600 g jar with metal lid, jar plus wax is ₹200.00 + ₹233.40. Switching to the Apothecary 500 gm glass dome adds ₹12.40, about 2.9% of jar plus wax; the clip-top adds ₹29.00. At this size, choose the lid on look, weight and fit; the price difference is small. Costs exclude oil, wick, labour, freight, packaging and GST.
At 150 to 300 g, the jar choice moves the cost most
For a 150 g candle at 8% (138 g of wax, ₹70.02), the Salsa lug-cap jar at ₹29.50 is 30% of jar plus wax (₹99.52); the Clear 150 g metal-lid jar at ₹94.40 is 57% (₹164.42). The metal-lid jar costs ₹64.90 more per candle than the lug cap. The Green Iridescent bamboo-lid jar is ₹55.60 more again than the metal-lid jar, but it is a 300 g jar: jar plus wax for a 300 g candle is ₹290.04, and it should be priced as a larger candle, not compared as a lid upgrade.
Shipping weight: weigh the lid, then check the step
No CSI listing states the weight of a jar or a lid. General tendency: a stamped metal lid or lug cap is light, a bamboo lid is heavier, and a solid glass lid or dome is usually the heaviest part after the jar itself. That tendency is not a number, and couriers bill numbers. Here is how to get yours.
Worked example with illustrative numbers, not measurements of CSI lids: a packed parcel weighs 470 g without the lid and your courier bills in 500 g steps. A lid adding 20 g keeps it in the first step; one adding 60 g puts it in the second on every order. Plug in your own weighings and your own courier's steps. Heavy glass and courier cost more generally is the online-brand heavy-jar guide; making a jar look substantial without the weight is I Want My 200 g Candle to Look Substantial Without Dramatically Increasing Packaging and Courier Weight — What Type of Jar Should I Choose?.
Appearance: what each material says, and what goes wrong
Metal: consistent, crisp, and it dents
A gold or black metal lid on clear glass is the apothecary look CSI's 150 g family is built around. Colour and finish tend to be consistent across a batch, which suits a range. The weaknesses are handling marks: dents, scratches on the top, and fingerprints on high-shine gold. A four-star review of CSI's tin containers mentions "some are little dent" on arrival. Inspect lids as you would glass, and pack them so nothing presses on the top.
Wood and bamboo: warm, natural, and never identical
Bamboo reads natural and eco, and pairs with neutral labels and soft wax colours. The same quality that makes it attractive, visible grain, means no two lids match exactly, and colour can differ between lots. Fragrance oil or wax on an unsealed wooden surface can mark it; keep lids off the pouring bench. For a range where every shelf unit should look the same, that variation is a cost, not a charm.
Glass: the most luxurious, and the least forgiving
A glass dome or cloche makes a candle look like an object rather than a consumable. It also shows everything: dust, fingerprints, wax splashes on the inside, and any gap where it does not sit level. On a clear jar, a glass lid doubles the surfaces that must be spotless.
What CSI's pages say about looks is marketing wording and we quote it as such: the Apothecary jar "Looks premium on shelves without needing extra packaging"; the Borosilicate 600 g lid is an "Elegant matte gold metal lid for a luxe finish". Your customers decide whether that is true.
Fit consistency across batches
Every lid type can fit the first batch and not the second, because glass and lids are both mass-produced and each lot differs slightly. How much that matters depends on the closure:
Press-on metal and glass lids rely on the rim's outer diameter. A fraction of a millimetre can turn snug into loose. Glass on glass is the least forgiving: no flex, no liner, so a slightly oval rim makes the lid rock.
Threaded lug caps and screw lids engage a thread or lugs, so small diameter differences tend to matter less. The failure to test for is a cap that does not turn to a firm stop.
Wooden lids with a seal ring use the ring to absorb variation, which helps, but wood can swell or shrink with humidity, so a lid that fits in a dry month may bind in the monsoon (roughly June to September) or loosen in winter. The tolerance you need and how to test it is the wooden-lid tolerance guide.
Clip-tops clamp the lid onto a seal, and the clamp usually absorbs rim variation. CSI's clip-top page says "airtight seal" but does not describe the seal material.
Whichever you choose, approve a reference set and check each delivery against it; the spec card, golden samples and inspection routine are in the lid-tolerance guide.
Heat, safety and reuse
A candle lid is a dust cover and a scent keeper for an unlit candle. It is not a snuffer and not a burn accessory. Four rules cover all three materials:
1. Lids go on cool candles only. After pouring, wait until the candle has fully set and cooled; after burning, wait until the wax and glass are cool. A lid on a warm candle traps heat and moisture, and a glass lid on a hot jar is a temperature difference you do not need.
2. Never put a lid on a lit candle. Metal conducts heat and gets hot; wood and bamboo are combustible; glass can crack with sudden heat. Put this on your care label; CSI's Candle Care Stickers Roll (₹413.00 for 500, ₹699.00 for 1,000) is one way to do that consistently.
3. Burn within sight, trim the wick, and stop with some wax left. Many makers stop the burn with about 1 cm of wax at the bottom (common practice). Lids change none of that.
4. Keep wooden lids dry. A damp lid can warp or mark; store stock lids in a dry place, not next to a wax melter.
For reuse, glass and metal lids tend to outlast the candle and suit refill programmes; wood lasts if kept dry. If refills are in your plans, the container choice is covered in the refill-container guide.

Which lid for which product
Argued against our own interest: the lid we would least recommend for a first online range is the one with the biggest wow factor, the glass dome. It adds weight and a second breakable part to every parcel. Launch with metal or a lug cap, and bring the dome in later as a gifting edition when you have seen your breakage and courier figures.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the lidded jars named here and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you we sell no lid on its own, that several of our pages do not say what a lid is made of, that one listing contradicts itself on lid colour, and that the flashiest lid we sell is the one we would least recommend for a first online range.
Every price, per-jar and per-100 g figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in the pick tables is in stock on that date, and the out-of-stock bamboo-lid and 300 g borosilicate listings are named as such. Lid, capacity and heat wording is quoted from the product pages.
Weights, fit behaviour and heat behaviour by material are general tendencies, not CSI test results; the 470 g parcel and 500 g step are illustrative; the lid-for-product recommendations are editorial judgement.
