Formulation · The range decision
A commercial range is not the six oils that smelled best. It is the six that throw in Indian rooms, sit cleanly in your wax, burn well on your wick, leave a margin at your price, and will still be in stock at 1 kg when the festive orders arrive. Score all of that on one sheet.
₹288.04
average material cost per candle in a priced six-scent, 300-candle launch (oil, wax, wick, jar) — ₹86,411.60 for the production order · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How do I choose fragrance oils for a commercial candle range? Score every candidate on six weighted criteria: hot throw 25, cold throw 10, wax compatibility 15, wick performance 15 (all from your own tests), cost per candle 20 and bulk availability 15 (from data). See the matrix.

Can I score throw from the supplier's catalogue? No. CSI publishes no throw, cure or wax-compatibility data for any oil, and nobody's catalogue knows your wax, wick and jar. The 65 test points come from your controlled, blind tests.

What does launching six scents cost? For 300 candles (50 per scent) at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks: ₹86,411.60 in oil, wax, wicks and jars, about ₹288.04 a candle. Qualification before it adds ₹11,433.64. See the launch plan.

What is different about a range for India? Larger rooms and ceiling fans for hot-throw testing, heat in storage and transit, and a calendar built around Diwali (8 November 2026) and the November–February wedding season. See selecting for India.
The short answer
Matrix: Hot 25 · cold 10 · wax 15 · wick 15 (your tests) + cost 20 · availability 15 (data). Score 1–5, weight, sum to 500.
Data scores: Cost score is linear from 5 (cheapest per candle on the shortlist, ₹49.09) to 1 (dearest, ₹190.40). Availability: 5 every size in stock, 4 one size out, 2 largest 500 g, 1 largest 100 g or less.
Launch: Qualify 16 oils (₹7,635.45), pair-burn the finalists (six shown: ₹3,798.19), produce 300 candles (₹86,411.60). Staged elimination and the controlled build cover the tests.
Selecting a commercial range — six criteria, two sources of evidence, one weighted score Scored from YOUR tests · 65 of 100 Computed from DATA · 35 Hot throw · 25 blind, real room Cold throw · 10 cured, lidded Wax compatibility · 15 sweat, frost, colour Wick performance · 15 pool, soot, flame Cost per candle · 20 oil at production size Bulk availability · 15 sizes in stock today Σ weight × score (1–5) → out of 500 · launch the best one or two per family The data columns rarely choose a range on their own — mostly they break ties between oils that pass your tests.
Four of the six criteria can only be scored from your own controlled, blind tests in your wax, with your wick and jar — together they carry 65 of the 100 weight points. Cost per candle and bulk availability can be computed from price and stock data, and carry 35. An oil that fails the tests cannot be rescued by a good price; the data columns separate oils that already pass.
Straight answer
I'm building a commercial scented-candle range in India — how do I select fragrance oils that balance hot throw, cold throw, wax compatibility, wick performance, cost per candle and reliable bulk availability?
Put every candidate on one weighted selection matrix. Four criteria come from your own tests, poured in your production wax, jar and wick at one load and scored blind at the same cure age: hot throw (25), judged in rooms like your customers' — larger Indian living rooms, often with a ceiling fan; cold throw (10); wax compatibility (15) — sweating, frosting, colour after cure; and wick performance (15) — full pool, no soot. Two come from data: cost per candle (20), oil at the size you will reorder; and bulk availability (15), whether every size, especially 1 kg, is in stock. Score each 1–5, multiply by the weight, and sum to 500. CSI publishes no throw data, so the 65 test points are yours to earn; the 35 data points we have scored below for 16 CSI oils. Launch the best one or two per family. A six-scent, 300-candle launch in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks costs ₹86,411.60 in materials, after ₹11,433.64 of qualification.
One line: tests decide which oils may enter the range; cost and supply decide which of those deserve it.
The shortlist on this page is 16 CSI oils across six families, from Indian florals to fresh and gourmand. Qualifying all 16 at their smallest in-stock size costs ₹6,165.98 — or ₹2,166.98 without Sacred Sandal Ember, whose only in-stock size on the pull date was 500 g at ₹3,999.00. That single row is the availability criterion at work.

The weighted selection matrix

Six criteria, one sheet, the same rules for every oil — including the one you already love.

Every earlier post in this series answers one part of the range question: how to calculate load, why hot and cold throw differ, how wax and wick change what reaches the room, how to test fairly, how to cost a candle. The range decision puts them together. The matrix below is the tool. It exists to stop the two most common range mistakes: choosing on the strip and discovering in production that three of six scents are weak, and choosing on price and discovering in October that the cheapest oil is out of stock at 1 kg.

Score each criterion 1–5 · multiply by the weight · maximum 500
The six criteria and how to score them
Criterion Weight Source Scores 5 when… Scores 1 when…
Hot throw 25 Your blind burn test Fills a large room within your burn time, character intact Barely noticeable beyond the table
Cold throw 10 Your cured, lidded test candle Clear and true to character when the lid comes off Faint or off-character
Wax compatibility 15 Your cured test candles No sweating, frosting beyond your standard, or discolouration Sweats, separates or yellows visibly
Wick performance 15 Your burn test Full pool in your burn time, steady flame, no soot Tunnels or soots at your chosen wick
Cost per candle 20 Price data Cheapest on your shortlist at production size Dearest on your shortlist
Bulk availability 15 Stock data Every size in stock, including 1 kg Nothing above 100 g in stock

The weights are a starting point — change them to suit your business, but change them before you score, not after. Hot throw gets the most weight because it is the reason most people buy a scented candle and the reason they reorder. Cost gets 20 because at a commercial scale it compounds across every candle. Cold throw gets only 10: it sells the candle in a shop, but it rarely brings a customer back on its own. My Candle Has Strong Cold Throw but Weak Hot Throw — Is the Problem More Likely to be the Fragrance Oil, Wax, Wick or Formulation? and My Candle Has Excellent Cold Throw at 10% but Almost No Hot Throw — Why Doesn't a Higher Fragrance Load Guarantee Stronger Scent While Burning? explain why the two throws must be scored separately.

Set a pass mark on the test columns first
Before adding the data points, require every candidate to reach a minimum on the tests — for example at least 3 on hot throw and at least 3 on wax compatibility. An oil that fails a pass mark leaves the matrix regardless of price. This stops a cheap, always-available oil from outscoring a better candle on arithmetic alone.

The data columns, scored on 16 CSI oils

Cost and availability can be scored before you pour anything. The table does it for 16 CSI oils on the 24 September 2026 pull. Cost per candle is 16 g of oil (a 200 g candle at 8%) at the largest size in stock, which is what you would reorder at. The cost score runs linearly from 5 for the cheapest on this shortlist (₹49.09) to 1 for the dearest (₹190.40). Availability is 5 when every listed size is in stock, 4 when 1 kg is in stock but a smaller size is out, 2 when the largest size in stock is 500 g, and 1 when nothing above 100 g is. Data points = 20 × cost score + 15 × availability score, out of 175.

Read the table as a tie-breaker, not a ranking. If two oils score the same on your tests — say 4, 3, 4, 4 on hot, cold, wax and wick, which is 250 test points — the data columns separate them. Between two fully stocked oils the gap is modest: Jasmine 167.3 against Raat Ki Rani 141.4, a difference of 25.8, about one step on the hot-throw score (25 points). Between a fully stocked oil and one with nothing above 100 g in stock, the gap is far larger — Eucalyptus Spearmint 175.0 against Freshwater (BBW Inspired) 35.0 — which is right: when supply is the problem, it should be able to decide on its own. We publish no throw measurements, and nothing in this table says one oil performs better than another. The 65 test points will reorder it.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Four oils on our own shortlist score poorly on availability: Vetiver and Sacred Sandal Ember had nothing above 500 g in stock on the pull date, and Freshwater and Moca Coffee nothing above 100 g. If one of them is your best-performing candle, you may still choose it — but plan buffer stock and a tested backup, and ask us on WhatsApp about restock before it goes on your label. Building a commercial range on an oil you cannot reorder at 1 kg is a risk we would rather you saw now. I Need the Same Candle Fragrance for Several Years — What Should I Ask a Supplier About Batch Consistency, Availability and Reformulation Before Building a Bestseller Around It? covers the questions to ask.

The test columns: what to measure

Sixty-five points of the matrix come from your bench. Make the bench fair.

Every test score must come from candles made identically: one wax lot, one load by finished weight, one wick from one pack, one jar, one pour day, one cure age, blind codes. I Want to Compare 20 Candle Fragrance Oils Objectively — How Do I Create Identical Test Candles so Wax Quantity, Fragrance Load, Wick, Jar and Cure Time Remain Controlled? is the protocol. Screen the whole shortlist cheaply first — strips and cold-throw tins — and put only the finalists into full candle pairs, as in I Have 30 Fragrance Samples but Only Want to Launch Five Candles — What Testing Sequence Can Eliminate Poor Performers Before I Waste Wax and Wicks on Full Burn Tests?. Then score:

1
Wax compatibility, at the cold stageAfter cure, inspect each tin and candle beside an unfragranced control: surface sweating or oil beads, frosting beyond what your wax normally shows, colour change. My Candle Sweats Oil at 12% Fragrance Load but Not at 8% — Does That Mean I Have Exceeded the Practical Fragrance Capacity of My Wax? covers sweating at high loads. Anything that sweats at your working load scores 1 and usually leaves the matrix.
2
Cold throw, lids off, blindScore at your cure checkpoint (for example 7 days, a labelled working checkpoint). Strength and truth to character.
3
Wick performance, on the first burnSame burn time for every candle. Pool width against the glass, flame height, soot on the jar. If an oil needs a different wick from the rest of the range to perform, note it: a range that shares one wick is simpler to produce. My Candle Smells Strong at 10% Fragrance Load but the Wick Struggles — How Do I Determine Whether Reducing Fragrance or Increasing Wick Size Is the Better Solution? covers the load-versus-wick choice.
4
Hot throw, in a room like your customer'sBurn one candle at a time in a room of realistic size, door closed, and score at the door and across the room. For Indian homes, include a run with the ceiling fan on low. I Want to Develop Candles for Indian Homes with Larger Rooms and Ceiling Fans — How Should I Evaluate Fragrance Diffusion During Testing? and My Candle Fills a Small Bedroom but Disappears in a Large Living Room — How Should Room Size Influence How I Judge Hot Throw? set out how.
5
Score, then add the dataEnter the four test scores, apply the pass marks, then add the data points from the table above. Rank within each family.
The CSI principle
Let the tests admit an oil; let the numbers choose between the admitted.
Performance in your wax is the reason a customer comes back, and no price or stock level can make up for a weak candle. Once several oils pass, cost per candle and bulk availability are the honest way to decide which of them carries your name.

Selecting for India

Three conditions make a range for Indian customers different from one tested in a small, closed room. They are reasoning about how and where candles are used, not market data. Rooms and air: many homes have larger living spaces and run ceiling fans much of the year, which spreads and dilutes scent; test hot throw in those conditions. Heat: candles may sit in warm storerooms, courier vans and shelves, so check the finished candle after warm storage as part of wax compatibility — sweating and surface changes show up here. Calendar: demand concentrates around Diwali (8 November 2026) and the November–February wedding season, so your top sellers need stock depth before those weeks, not during them.

Families matter too, though the choice is yours. A range for Indian gifting often wants at least one Indian floral — Jasmine or Raat Ki Rani — a sandalwood or oud, a warm gourmand for festive gifting, and something fresh for everyday burning. We are not claiming any family sells best in India; that is for your own sales to show. Choose one or two candidates per family for the matrix so the range stays balanced whatever the scores say.

Letting one family take over. If the three highest scores all come from gourmands, a pure ranking gives you a three-gourmand range. Rank within families, then pick the best one or two from each. A balanced six-scent range usually beats the six highest totals, because customers buy across moods, occasions and rooms.

The priced launch plan

Here is a complete plan, priced with real CSI pack sizes. The six launch oils are an example set — one per family, chosen only to show the arithmetic, not a prediction of what your matrix will select. The launch is 50 candles per scent, 300 in all, 200 g at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks with an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar.

Stage 3 total 300 candles ₹86,411.60 (₹288.04 a candle)
Plan total ₹97,845.24
Example launch six · 50 candles each · oil at the 1 kg rate · material cost = oil + 184 g Chunks + wick + jar
Cost per candle by scent
Oil 1 kg Used for 50 candles Left per kilo Oil per candle Material cost per candle
Jasmine ₹3,923.00 800 g 200 g ₹62.77 ₹249.68
Sandalwood ₹5,026.80 800 g 200 g ₹80.43 ₹267.34
Cinnamon Vanilla ₹4,554.80 800 g 200 g ₹72.88 ₹259.79
Eucalyptus Spearmint ₹3,068.00 800 g 200 g ₹49.09 ₹236.00
Mango Coconut ₹3,964.00 800 g 200 g ₹63.42 ₹250.34
Dark Vanilla Oud ₹5,691.00 800 g 200 g ₹91.06 ₹277.97

Each kilo covers the 800 g for 50 candles and leaves 200 g — enough for the 3–5% extra we suggest planning for pour loss and test burns (a working assumption), a 50 g retained sample of the lot, and a lot-acceptance test on the next delivery. That is why 1 kg is the right launch size here even though, for most oils, it is not cheaper per gram than 100 g: it is one lot per scent, and the spare covers the controls. My Fragrance Supplier Sent a New Batch of My Bestselling Scent — What Should I Compare Against the Previous Batch Before Making Hundreds of Candles? shows the lot test, and I'm Launching 10 Candle Fragrances — How Do I Decide Which Scents Deserve 1 Kg Fragrance Oil Purchases and Which Should Remain in Smaller Trial Sizes? and I'm Making 500 Candles Across Five Fragrances — How Do I Divide My Fragrance Oil Purchase When Some Scents Are Expected to Sell More than Others? cover how to size each scent's purchase when some will outsell others.

The ₹35,994.00 of wax is the largest single line. Six 10 kg bags of Chunks give 60 kg for the 55,200 g needed; Chunks are priced flat per kilo, so bag size is about lots, not savings. If your tests were run in CSI 464 (₹5,074.00 per 10 kg, rated up to 10%) or Natural Soy Pearl Wax (₹21,240.00 per 50 kg, no ceiling published in our data), price the plan in that wax instead — but only if the range was qualified in it. I Want to Reduce Fragrance Cost Without Making My Candles Smell Weaker — Should I First Optimise Dosage, Wax Compatibility, Wick Performance or Fragrance Selection? covers wax as a cost lever, and I Need One Fragrance Oil Supplier for Dozens of Candle Scents — How Do I Compare Performance, Consistency, Documentation, Bulk Pricing and Availability Before Consolidating Purchasing? covers consolidating the range with one supplier.

A range is chosen twice: once on the bench, and again every time you reorder.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We publish no throw, cure, wax-compatibility or dosage data for any oil, so this page scores only what our data supports — cost per candle and bulk availability — and leaves 65 of 100 weight points to your own tests. It names four of our own oils that score poorly on availability, because you should know before you build a range on them.

Prices and stock are CSI live data pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and jar prices were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with the 500-wick pack and 85 g tin from the later catalogue pulls. Cost scores, availability scores, data points and the plan total (₹97,845.24) are plain arithmetic on those prices and stock states.

The weights, pass marks, scoring bands, family structure, 50-candle launch volume, 8% load and cure checkpoints are working assumptions for illustration. The India considerations are reasoning about rooms, heat and the festive calendar, not market data. For stock checks, documents or a quote on your range, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose fragrances for a candle business in India?
Shortlist one or two oils per family, test them identically in your wax, jar and wick, and score hot throw, cold throw, wax compatibility and wick performance blind. Add cost per candle and bulk availability from data. Test hot throw in rooms like your customers' — larger, often with a ceiling fan.
How many fragrances should a new candle range have?
Enough to cover the families your customers buy across without spreading stock too thin. Six is a practical launch size: one or two per family, each bought as one 1 kg lot. Add seasonal scents later in smaller sizes.
What is the best weighting for choosing candle fragrance oils?
A sensible start is hot throw 25, cold throw 10, wax compatibility 15, wick performance 15, cost per candle 20 and availability 15. Change the weights to suit your business, but fix them before scoring, and set pass marks on the test columns so price cannot rescue a weak candle.
How much does it cost to launch a six-scent candle range?
In this example — 300 candles of 200 g at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — ₹86,411.60 in oil, wax, wicks and jars, about ₹288.04 a candle, plus ₹11,433.64 to qualify the oils first. Labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra.
Which CSI fragrance oils have the best hot throw?
We have not published throw measurements for any oil, and throw depends on your wax, load, wick, jar, cure and room. Use the matrix: test candidates identically and score them blind. Before I Reject a Fragrance Oil for Weak Hot Throw, What Variables Should I Test in Wax, Wick, Dosage, Cure and Room Conditions? lists the variables to control before rejecting an oil.
How do I make sure I can reorder my candle fragrances in bulk?
Score availability before you launch: prefer oils with every size in stock, especially 1 kg. On 24 September 2026, 73 CSI oils were in stock at 1 kg. For your top sellers, hold a buffer, keep retained samples and qualify a backup, and ask on WhatsApp about restock and larger quantities.
Score it, then stock it

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Candle = 200 g at 8% of finished weight (16 g oil + 184 g wax). Cost score = 5 − 4 × (cost − ₹49.09) ÷ (₹190.40 − ₹49.09), using oil at the largest in-stock size. Availability score bands are defined on the page. Weights, pass marks and the example launch six are illustrative. Tins = 85 g at 8% (6.8 g oil + 78.2 g wax). Launch = 50 candles per scent; costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. India considerations are reasoning, not market data.
