Yes. Two candles of different ages are two candles at different points on their cure curves, so the older one has a head start whatever the oil. Pour both on the same day, burn both on the same day, at the same age, blind, and only then call a winner.
₹116.80
difference in oil cost per 200 g candle between the two coffee oils compared on this page, at 100 g rates · the test decides whether the dearer one earns it
Quick answers — read this first
Should I test two oils at the same cure age? Yes. Cure changes how a soy candle performs, commonly a lot in the first week and less later. If one candle is older, you are partly comparing ages, not oils. Match the age, the burn day, the room and the order, and blind-code both.

What if my two oils arrive on different days? Wait and pour both on the same day. If you cannot, stagger the burns so each candle is tested at the same age, and accept that the burn days, and the room conditions on them, will differ. Same-day pours are better.

At what age should I compare them? At two ages, not one, such as 7 days and 14 days as working checkpoints. Oils can cure at different rates, and a ranking at 7 days can flip by 14. Test at the age your customer will first burn the candle, too.

Why does it matter so much? Because the answer costs money. Moca Coffee costs ₹179.20 of oil per 200 g candle at 100 g and Roasted Coffee ₹62.40. Over 200 candles that gap is ₹23,360.00, so an unfair test can make a very expensive decision for you.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes. Burn both at exactly the same cure age, on the same day, in the same room, blind-coded, alternating which is lit or smelled first.
Design: Same wax lot, load, wick, jar, pour session and storage. Two candles per oil per age. Test at two working checkpoints, such as 7 d and 14 d.
Stakes: Roasted Coffee ₹62.40 vs Moca Coffee ₹179.20 of oil per 200 g candle (100 g rates): ₹116.80 per candle, ₹23,360.00 per 200 candles.
Compare oils at the same age, or you are comparing ages Unfair: same pour day, different burn days Oil A Oil B pour burn at 7 d burn at 14 d B "wins"? Fair: same pour day, same burn day, same age Oil A Oil B both at 7 d, blind both at 14 d, blind Filled circles = paired burns on the same day, in the same room, blind-coded. Ages are working checkpoints.
In the unfair layout both oils are poured together, but Oil A is burned at 7 days and Oil B at 14. Any advantage B shows could be a week of cure. In the fair layout both oils are burned together at 7 days and again at 14 days, blind, in the same room, so age drops out of the comparison. The ages are working checkpoints, not specifications.
Straight answer
I'm comparing two fragrance oils — should I burn-test them at exactly the same cure age to make the comparison fair?
Yes, and it matters more than most makers expect. Soy wax is commonly described as changing most in the first days after pouring and less later. A candle tested at 14 days is on a different part of its cure curve from one tested at 7 days, so the older one has a head start whatever oil is in it. Pour both oils on the same day, from the same wax lot, at the same load, with the same wick and jar, and cure them on the same shelf. Burn them in pairs on the same day, in the same room, blind-coded, alternating which one you smell first. Test at two working checkpoints, such as 7 and 14 days, because oils can cure at different rates and a ranking can flip between ages. CSI publishes no cure or throw data for any oil, so this test is your evidence. It is worth doing properly. On this page, Moca Coffee puts ₹179.20 of oil into a 200 g candle and Roasted Coffee ₹62.40. Over 200 candles that is ₹23,360.00, a decision an unfair test could make for you by accident.
One line: Match the age first. Otherwise the calendar picks your oil.
The comparison on this page is a common one: a value coffee against a premium coffee. Roasted Coffee at ₹390.00 for 100 g and Moca Coffee at ₹1,120.00 for 100 g each cover four test candles at 8% (64 g) with 36 g spare. Moca Coffee's 15 g is out of stock, so its smallest buyable size is 50 g at ₹560.00.

Why age decides unfair tests

Ask a two-day-old candle and a two-week-old candle the same question, and you will get two different answers from the same oil.

The mechanism is covered in why curing affects fragrance performance. Soy wax keeps crystallising after it looks set, and the way it holds and releases fragrance changes as it does. Most of that change is commonly described as happening early. That makes cure age one of the largest variables in any burn test, often larger than the difference between two good oils. If one candle is older, the test has two variables, oil and age, and you cannot separate them afterwards.

It gets worse, because oils may not cure at the same rate. Do all fragrances need the same cure explains why a scent can reach its best sooner or later than another in the same wax. So even a matched-age comparison at a single age can mislead. An oil that is quick to peak wins at 7 days, while an oil that is slow to open up wins at 14. The table below shows how that plays out, using invented scores for two unnamed oils.

Invented scores for unnamed oils X and Y · 1–10 hot-throw scale · illustration only, not data for any CSI oil
How the verdict changes with the comparison you choose
Comparison Oil X Oil Y Apparent winner Fair?
X at 14 d vs Y at 7 d 6.5 4 X by 2.5 No — X had a week more cure
X at 7 d vs Y at 14 d 6 7 Y by 1 No — Y had a week more cure
Both at 7 d 6 4 X by 2 Yes, at 7 days
Both at 14 d 6.5 7 Y by 0.5 Yes, at 14 days
Your customer's first burn age ? ? The one that matters Test at that age

The same two oils can "win" by 2.5 points or "lose" by 1 depending only on which candle was older. Matched at 7 days, X is clearly ahead. Matched at 14 days, the two are close, with Y slightly ahead. Neither matched result is wrong. They answer different questions. The one you need is the one at the age your customers will actually light the candle, and that is why the comparison runs at two ages.

The unfair test most makers run without noticing. A new sample oil arrives. You pour it the same afternoon and burn it a few days later beside a candle of your current oil from last month's stock. The old candle has had weeks of cure and the new one a few days. The new oil loses, and you never order it again. Re-pour your current oil on the same day as the sample, and compare them at matched ages.

Six ways a comparison goes unfair

Cure age is the largest trap, but it is not the only one. Each item below adds a second variable to what should be a one-variable test. Most cost nothing to fix once you know about them.

General testing practice · controls for any side-by-side fragrance comparison
What can creep into a comparison, and the control for each
Unfair element Which candle it favours Control
Different cure ages Usually the older one Pour the same day; burn at matched ages
Different burn days Whichever day has the better room conditions Burn pairs on the same day
Smelled first Usually the first one smelled, before your nose adapts Alternate the order; air the room; rest your nose
Known labels The one you expect to win Blind codes applied by someone else
Different load or weight The one with more oil Weigh oil for each candle; check the finished weights
Different wick, jar or melt pool The one with the fuller melt pool Same wick and jar; record the melt pool on every burn

The last row catches many comparisons between oils of different character. A heavier oil can change how a wick behaves, so two candles with the same wick may not reach the same melt pool. Record the melt pool at the end of each burn. If one candle never reaches the glass, the comparison is partly a wick test. Load versus wick size explains what to do about it. For scoring, comparing loads objectively and an objective hot-throw method have sheets you can reuse.

Use pairs, not singles
Pour two candles per oil per age. If the two candles of the same oil disagree by more than a point, the test is noisy, whether from the pour, the wick or the room. Fix that before trusting any difference between the oils. First and last candles differ covers pour-order effects.

The paired-age test

Eight candles, two oils, two ages. Everything else held still.
1
Fix the formula for both oilsSame wax lot of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, same load (8% here: 16 g oil + 184 g wax per 200 g candle), same White Matte jar, same Eco Thin C1 wick. Load follows CSI's convention, a share of the finished weight.
2
Weigh each candle's oil on a scale you trustWeigh the oil for each candle separately. Check the scale with a known weight before you start. A 1 g error on 16 g is a 6% difference in load, enough to tip a close comparison.
3
Pour both oils in one sessionMelt and add fragrance following the wax maker's instructions, with the same temperature and stirring routine for both oils. Pour four candles of each: two for 7 days, two for 14 days. Label bases with codes only, and keep the key sheet away from the test room.
4
Cure side by sideSame shelf, same cover, same conditions. Do not put one oil near a window and the other in a cupboard.
5
Burn in matched pairsAt 7 days, burn one candle of each oil in the same room at the same time, or one after the other with the room aired between, alternating which goes first. Score at 1 m and 3 m after fixed times. Repeat with the second pair. Do the same at 14 days.
6
Unblind and averageAverage the two candles per oil per age. Call a difference only if it is larger than the gap between the two candles of the same oil. Record the result with the ages, the date and the oil lots.
If the two candles of the same oil disagree more than the two oils do, you have measured your test, not your oils.

When the oils arrive on different days

Samples rarely arrive together. The simplest fix is also the best: hold the first oil until the second arrives, then pour both on the same day. You lose a few days and gain a clean comparison. If you cannot wait, perhaps because the first oil is already poured, stagger the burns so both candles are tested at the same age. That removes the age difference but brings in a burn-day difference. Different days can mean different weather, humidity, fan use and your own state. Keep the room routine identical and treat small differences with caution.

Example dates · oil A poured Monday 28 September, oil B arrives Thursday 1 October
Three ways to handle a late oil
Approach Pour dates 7-day burns 14-day burns Verdict quality
Hold A and pour together (best) Both 1 Oct Both 8 Oct Both 15 Oct Clean: same age, same burn day
Stagger the burns A 28 Sep, B 1 Oct A 5 Oct, B 8 Oct A 12 Oct, B 15 Oct Age matched; burn day not matched
Burn together regardless A 28 Sep, B 1 Oct Both 8 Oct (A at 10 d, B at 7 d) Both 15 Oct (A at 17 d, B at 14 d) Unfair: A always 3 days older

If you choose to stagger, add a check. Re-pour oil A on the day oil B arrives, as a third set, and compare it with the original A at matched ages. If the two sets of A agree, your burn-day conditions are stable enough to trust the staggered comparison. If they do not, go back to same-day pours. Identical test candles for 20 oils scales this discipline up to a full range screen.

What the verdict is worth

It is easy to treat a burn test as a matter of taste. It is really a purchasing decision. Here are the two oils on this page, costed per candle. Every candle is 200 g at 8% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, with a ₹186.92 base of 184 g of wax, one Eco Thin C1 wick and one White Matte jar. Costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST.

Largest in-stock pack 1 kg ₹3,738.00 100 g ₹1,120.00 (500 g and 1 kg out of stock) —

If the premium oil wins a fair test by a clear margin at the age your customers burn, the ₹116.80 per candle may be worth it, and comparing oils by cost per finished candle shows how to weigh that. If it wins only an unfair test, perhaps because it was the older candle, you would spend ₹23,360.00 over 200 candles on a week of cure. The stock row matters too. Moca Coffee's 500 g and 1 kg are out of stock on the pull date, so a range built on it depends on 100 g restocks. Ask on WhatsApp before you commit.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The premium coffee here earns us almost three times as much per gram. If a matched-age test cannot separate the two oils in your wax, choose the cheaper one and put the difference into your margin or your packaging. We would rather sell you the right oil than the dearer one, and a fair test is how you find out which is which.

The CSI principle
One variable per comparison. Age is a variable.
A burn test compares oils only when everything else is the same: wax, load, wick, jar, pour day, storage, burn day, room, order and knowledge of the labels. Cure age is the variable most often left uncontrolled, and it is often the largest one.

Once you have a fair verdict, record it with the ages, dates and oil lots. It is a result for this formula in your conditions. It will not automatically hold in another wax or jar, or for a new lot of the same oil. Comparing a new batch of the same scent and a repeatable mixing and curing protocol cover keeping results valid over time.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page compares a ₹3.90-a-gram oil with an ₹11.20-a-gram one and tells you to choose the cheaper one unless a fair test says otherwise. We would rather you bought the right oil than the dearer one.

Oil and wax prices come from CSI's live listings pulled on 24 September 2026, with out-of-stock sizes marked. Jar and scale prices are as verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, and wick prices are from the 25 September pull. Per-candle and per-season figures are plain arithmetic, shown to two decimals.

The X and Y scores are invented to illustrate the method, not results for any CSI oil. CSI publishes no cure, throw or dosage data for any oil. The 7- and 14-day ages are working checkpoints. For MSDS or IFRA documents, restock questions or test design help, message +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two candle fragrance oils fairly?
Same wax lot, load, wick, jar and pour day. Cure on the same shelf. Burn in pairs on the same day at the same age, blind-coded, alternating which is smelled first. Test at two ages, such as 7 and 14 days.
Does cure time affect burn test results?
Yes, often by more than the difference between two good oils. Soy wax is commonly described as changing most in the first days after pouring. Always record the cure age next to every score.
Can I compare a new fragrance with candles I made last month?
Not fairly. The old candle has weeks of cure. Re-pour your current oil on the same day as the new one and compare them at matched ages.
What age should I test candles at before choosing a fragrance?
At the age your customers will first burn them, plus one earlier checkpoint. Many makers use 7 and 14 days as working checkpoints. A ranking can flip between ages, so test at both.
How many candles do I need to compare two fragrances?
A working minimum of eight: two per oil at each of two ages. At 200 g and 8% that is 64 g of each oil and 1,472 g of wax. Pairs let you see whether the test itself is noisy.
Is a more expensive fragrance oil always stronger?
No. Price reflects the formula, not measured throw, and CSI publishes no throw data. Here the premium oil costs ₹116.80 more per candle. Only a fair test in your wax shows whether it earns that.
