Couriers bill weight steps, not grams, so a heavy jar costs nothing until it tips your parcel over a boundary, and then it costs on every order. Here is how to find each candle's glass weight budget, why packaging beats thick glass for breakage, and what to launch with.
270 g
glass a 150 g candle can carry before its parcel crosses a 0.5 kg step (worked example, illustrative packaging) · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should an online candle brand avoid very heavy glass jars? Usually, yes, at launch. A heavy jar costs you on every order if it pushes the parcel into a higher courier weight step, and heavier glass is not automatically less likely to break. Packaging does more for breakage than glass mass does.

How do I know if my jar is too heavy? Work out its weight budget: your courier's next weight step, minus the candle, minus the packed box and padding. In our worked example, a 150 g candle leaves about 270 g for glass under a 0.5 kg step. Weigh your jar; no CSI listing states a jar weight.

What does crossing a step cost? Only your courier can say. With illustrative inputs of ₹60.00 for the first 0.5 kg and ₹40.00 per extra 0.5 kg, one step is 67% more per parcel, ₹20,000.00 over 500 orders.

And breakage? Plan for it with packaging and a replacement policy, not with thicker glass. In the worked example, one step up costs the same as one breakage in every 5.8 parcels, a rate no reasonable packing should come near.
The short answer
The rule: couriers bill steps, not grams. A jar only costs freight when it pushes the parcel over a step boundary, and then it costs on every order.
The budget: next step − candle − packaging = glass you can afford. Worked example: 270 g for a 150 g candle, 350 g for a 500 g candle under 1 kg, 150 g for a 700 g candle.
The breakage maths: one breakage costs a replacement (₹173.86 of materials before oil) plus a second shipment. Spend on packaging first; a thicker jar is not a reliable fix.
The recommendation: launch with a light lidded jar or a tin, good packaging and a test-shipping round. Add heavy statement jars later for gifting and in-person sales.
Your glass weight budget, before the next courier step Worked example drawn to scale (1,500 g = 600 px). Candle weights from the jar listings; packaging weights are illustrative; 0.5 kg steps are an assumption. No CSI listing states a jar weight: weigh yours against the budget. 0.5 kg step 1.0 kg step 1.5 kg step 150 g candle · Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid 150 g 270 g ~150 g candle · 200 ml Matte / Frosted jar 150 g 270 g 300 g candle · Green Iridescent jar 300 g 100 g 500 g candle · Apothecary dome-lid jar 500 g 350 g 550 g candle · Clip-top container 550 g 300 g 700 g candle · Apothecary dome-lid jar 700 g 150 g 0 250 500 750 1000 1250 1500 g candle (wax + oil) box and padding (illustrative) glass (jar + lid) you can add before the next step Couriers commonly bill on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, in steps set by their own terms. Replace every number with yours. If your jar weighs more than its budget, the parcel moves up a step on every order.
For six candle sizes from CSI jar listings, the dark bar is the candle, the grey bar an illustrative box and padding, and the dashed box the glass weight (jar and lid) you could add before the parcel crosses the next 0.5 kg step. Small candles have generous budgets; a 300 g candle has almost none under 500 g; large candles start in the second step whatever the jar. Weigh your own jar and packing, and use your courier's real steps.
Straight answer
I'm launching a candle brand online. Should I avoid very heavy glass jars because of courier cost and breakage risk?
For a launch, mostly yes, but for a more precise reason than "heavy is bad". Couriers commonly bill in weight steps, on actual or volumetric weight whichever is higher, so extra grams cost nothing until they push the parcel over a step boundary, and then they cost on every single order. Work out each product's glass weight budget (the next step, minus the candle, minus the packed box) and choose a jar that fits inside it: in our worked example, about 270 g of glass for a 150 g candle under a 0.5 kg step. On breakage, heavier glass is not automatically safer in transit; the box, the void fill and the fit do most of the work, and packaging costs far less per parcel than a step increase. In the worked example, one step up costs as much as one breakage in every 5.8 parcels. So launch with light lidded jars or tins, spend on air-column wrap and a well-fitting box, test-ship a few parcels to different cities, and keep heavy statement jars for gifting, in-person sales and a later premium line. No CSI listing states a jar weight, and CSI does not publish courier rates or breakage data: weigh, quote and test with your own courier.
One line: choose a jar that keeps the packed parcel under your courier's next weight step, and spend the difference on packaging, not glass.
A launch kit you can weigh and test-ship: 10 Clear Glass Jars with Golden Lid (150 gram) (₹944.00), 50 11 x 11 x 8 cm boxes (₹1,121.00) and one Air Bubble Roll (₹900.00): ₹2,965.00, or ₹3,319.00 with the weighing scale. All in stock on 26 September 2026. The box is 8 cm deep, so test the lidded jar's fit and top padding first; the taller 7 × 5 × 4 inch box (₹1,336.00 per 50) is the fallback.

How couriers turn grams into rupees

Your courier does not charge for grams. It charges for the step your grams land in.

Every courier sets its own terms, and they change, so read yours. Two features are common enough to plan around.

Weight steps. Parcels are commonly billed in weight bands or steps rather than by the exact gram: a charge for the first step, then a charge for each additional step. A parcel a few grams over a boundary is billed for the whole next step. That makes freight a staircase, not a slope, and it is why a jar's weight either costs nothing or costs a full step.

Actual versus volumetric weight. Couriers commonly bill on the higher of the actual weight and a volumetric weight worked out from the box's dimensions (length × width × height divided by a divisor the courier sets). A big, light box can be billed as if it were heavy. For small glass candles in snug boxes, actual weight usually governs. Worked example with an assumed divisor of 5,000, used here only as an input: CSI's 11 × 11 × 8 cm box is 968 cm³, a volumetric weight of about 0.19 kg; the 7 x 5 x 4 inch box (about 17.8 × 12.7 × 10.2 cm) is about 2,294 cm³, about 0.46 kg. A packed glass candle will usually weigh more than 0.19 kg, so in the small box actual weight decides; in the larger box the two can be close, so work out both. Use your courier's real divisor.

Freight matters on the way in as well as out. One CSI customer's review reads: "the delivery charges are very high which is restricting me to purchase more". Heavy jars cost more to receive from any supplier, us included, before they cost more to send. CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish freight rates; ask for a quote on WhatsApp.

Your glass weight budget

The useful question is not "is this jar heavy?" but "how much glass can this product carry before the parcel moves up a step?" That number is the glass weight budget, and you can work it out before you buy a single production jar.

Glass weight budget · worked example, illustrative packaging, assumed 0.5 kg steps
Next step − candle − packaging = glass you can add
Product Candle (from the listing) Box and padding (illustrative) Next step Glass budget
150 g candle · Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid 150 g 80 g 500 g 270 g
~150 g candle · 200 ml Matte / Frosted jar 150 g 80 g 500 g 270 g
300 g candle · Green Iridescent jar 300 g 100 g 500 g 100 g
500 g candle · Apothecary dome-lid jar 500 g 150 g 1000 g 350 g
550 g candle · Clip-top container 550 g 150 g 1000 g 300 g
700 g candle · Apothecary dome-lid jar 700 g 150 g 1000 g 150 g

Three things stand out. Small candles (about 150 g) have a generous budget: a jar and lid under about 270 g keep them in the first step. A 300 g candle has almost no room under 500 g: with 100 g of budget, it will probably land in the second step whatever jar you choose, so that product should be priced for it. Large candles (500 g and up) start in the second step on wax alone; the question for them is whether a heavy jar and a glass lid push them into a third.

Candle weights come from the listings: "150g fill capacity", the 200 ml family's roughly 150 g planning figure (worked example in the 200 ml jar hub), "Capacity - 300g", "~500 g - 700 g", "Wax Fill - 550g". Packaging weights are illustrative. Replace both with your own weighings.

1
Get your courier's steps and divisor. From its rate card or account terms: the step size, the charge per step, and the volumetric divisor. Write them down; everything else depends on them.
2
Weigh the empty jar and lid. On a scale reading to 1 g. The Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00) states no capacity or resolution on its page, so check yours. Weigh three jars and use the heaviest.
3
Weigh a finished candle and a packed parcel. Pack one exactly as you will ship it: wrap, box, void fill, invoice, tape, label. The packed weight is the only one the courier cares about.
4
Check the volumetric weight. Box length × width × height in cm, divided by your courier's divisor. Billable weight is the higher of this and the packed weight.
5
Find your margin to the next step. If the parcel sits within a few tens of grams of a boundary, a humid day's heavier cardboard or an extra sheet of wrap can tip it over. Leave a margin, or deliberately price for the next step.
6
Repeat for a heavier jar. If it crosses a step, you now know the exact per-order cost of that jar's look, and can decide whether customers will pay it.

Worked example: what crossing a step costs

Illustrative courier inputs, not a quote from any courier: ₹60.00 for the first 0.5 kg and ₹40.00 for each further 0.5 kg. Plug in your own.

Worked example · illustrative courier charges
The same candle, a light jar versus a heavy one
Item Light jar, parcel under 0.5 kg Heavy jar, parcel just over 0.5 kg
Billable step 0.5 kg 1.0 kg
Courier charge per parcel (illustrative) ₹60.00 ₹100.00
Difference per parcel — ₹40.00 (67% more)
Over 500 orders — ₹20,000.00
Who pays You, from margin, or your customer, as a higher shipping charge at checkout, on every order

A large candle that moves from the 1.0 kg step to 1.5 kg because of a heavy glass lid pays the same ₹40.00 again (₹100.00 to ₹140.00 in the example). When you compare jars, put the step next to the jar price, because both are paid per candle: the Apothecary 500 gm dome-lid jar costs ₹118.00 more per jar than the Clear 150 g jar, but it is a different size of candle and should be priced as one. Between two jars of similar size, a heavier one that crosses a step can cost more per order in freight than it saves or adds in jar price, and that cost is easy to miss because it never appears on the jar invoice.

Deeper trade-offs between a lighter jar and heavier glass for perceived quality across pan-India shipping are worked through in the lighter-versus-heavier guide; ways to make a 200 g candle look substantial without adding weight are in I Want My 200 g Candle to Look Substantial Without Dramatically Increasing Packaging and Courier Weight — What Type of Jar Should I Choose?.

Breakage: glass mass versus packaging

Thicker glass feels safer in your hand. In a courier sorting centre, the box decides.

It is tempting to assume that heavier, thicker glass survives transit better. Sometimes a thicker wall does resist a knock that would crack a thin one. But a heavier jar also carries more momentum into every drop and pushes harder against its packaging, and a thick jar that is loose in its box can break just as easily. In our judgement, for parcels, how the jar is held in the box matters more than how thick the glass is. CSI publishes no transit breakage data for any jar, and we would not trust anyone's general figure over your own test shipments.

What a breakage actually costs

Worked example, a 150 g candle in the Clear 150 g jar: replacement materials are ₹173.86 (jar ₹94.40, 138 g of CSI 464 at ₹70.02, a C2 wick at ₹9.44), plus a second shipment at the illustrative ₹60.00: ₹233.86 before fragrance oil, labour, packaging and the customer's patience. Spread across parcels at illustrative rates, that is ₹4.68 per parcel if 1 in 50 breaks, or ₹2.34 if 1 in 100 breaks. These rates are for the arithmetic only, not a prediction.

Now compare with the step increase: ₹40.00 per parcel. For a heavier jar to pay for a courier step through fewer breakages alone, it would have to prevent one breakage in about every 5.8 parcels. If your breakage rate is anywhere near that, the fix is the packaging, not the glass.

Packaging runs the other way. An illustrative extra ₹10.00 per parcel on better wrap and a snugger box pays for itself if it prevents one breakage in about every 23.4 parcels. That is why the money belongs in the box.

Mistake: choosing a heavy "premium" jar for an online launch because it feels sturdy, then shipping it loose in an oversized box with crumpled paper. What happens: the parcel crosses a weight step on every order and still arrives cracked, because the jar can move. Fix: a lighter jar that fits its budget, held still in a snug box with air-column wrap, test-shipped before launch.

Packing a glass candle for Indian couriers

General packing practice for glass, as our judgement rather than any courier's rule; your courier's own packing guidance comes first.

Hold it still. The jar should not move when you shake the closed box. Wrap it (air-column wrap or several layers of bubble wrap), then fill every gap. Movement is what turns a bump into a crack.

Keep clearance on every side, including the top and bottom. A jar that touches the box wall takes every knock directly. The 11 × 11 × 8 cm box gives side clearance for a 7 cm jar but none on top for an 8 cm-tall one; test the fit, or choose a taller box.

Protect the lid and the wax surface. A lid that can unscrew or lift lets wax get scuffed; a glass dome is a second breakable part and needs its own wrap. Lidless jars need something over the wax surface, such as packing tissue (₹650.00 for 100 sheets, ₹6.50 a sheet).

Mark it, but do not rely on the mark. "Fragile" labels help at the counter; they do not change how a sorting belt treats a box. Put candle safety and care information inside the parcel; the Candle Care Stickers Roll (₹413.00 for 500, ₹699.00 for 1,000) is one way.

Test-ship before launch
Send five packed parcels to friends in different cities, including one far from you, and ask for photos on arrival. It is the cheapest breakage data you will ever get. In summer (roughly April to June), also ask how soft the candle top was on arrival: heat in transit is its own problem, covered in the summer shipping guide.

Crinkle Paper Filler is out of stock in every colour on 26 September 2026, and the 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box is out of stock; the in-stock packaging is linked in the picks below. What good packaging looks like when you receive glass from a supplier is in the inbound packaging guide.

Jars and packaging for an online launch

Three light jars to weigh against your budget, one tin that removes glass breakage altogether, and the two packaging items that do most of the protecting. All in stock on 26 September 2026.

1
small lidded glass · the online launch jar
Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram)
A 150 g candle with a metal lid included: the lid keeps the wax clean in transit and there is no separate glass lid to break. The page calls it "thick-walled" and states "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C", outer rim about 7 cm, base about 6.5 cm; it states no empty-jar weight, so weigh one against the 270 g budget in the diagram. For first online ranges and gift sets. Limitation: "thick-walled" is a description, not a weight; weigh it before assuming it sits in the lowest step.

Pack of 10 ₹944.00 ₹94.40 weigh, pack and test-ship 10
Pack of 20 ₹1,888.00 ₹94.40 a 20-order launch batch

lidless 200 ml · the coloured option
White Matte Glass Jar (8 × 7 cm family)
"Fill weight of 200 ml", "Height 8 cm width 7 cm", "withstand high heat" (no figure), no lid mentioned. Our planning figure for this family is a finished candle of about 150 g (a worked example; weigh yours). Nine matte colours and three frosted are in stock at the same price. For colourful online ranges. Limitation: with no lid, the box has to protect the wax surface; the 8 cm height in an 8 cm-tall box leaves no top padding, so test your box.

lug-cap 200 ml · lowest cost per jar
200ml Salsa Glass Jar with 63mm Lug Cap (Golden Lid)
A threaded 63 mm lug cap tends to stay put in a courier bag, and at ₹29.50 per jar at 50 or 100 it leaves the most money for packaging. The page states "The 200ml capacity" and "Heat Resistant Glass… withstands the heat of hot wax" (no figure) but no dimensions or weight. For budget online ranges and subscription boxes. Limitation: a pantry-jar look, and the page calls it "upcycled".
Pack Price Per jar What it covers

metal tin · removes glass breakage entirely
Tin Containers for Candle Making – 85 & 135g
Metal tins with a "Fragrance Lock Lid", sold in packs of 12. The variants say 85 gram and 135 gram; the page body says "100g and 200g" and gives "6 cm x 4 cm" and "7.5 cm x 5 cm" without saying which is height, so confirm on WhatsApp and measure. A four-star CSI review mentions "some are little dent" and a lid that was "difficult to open", so inspect on arrival. For sample sets, travel candles and the first months of an online brand while you learn your breakage rate. Limitation: tins can dent in transit, which is cosmetic but visible.
Pack Price Per jar What it covers
85 gram, pack of 12 ₹849.60 ₹70.80 12 sample or travel candles
135 gram, pack of 12 ₹1,161.12 ₹96.76 12 standard tins
₹70.80 and ₹96.76 per tin; no glass to break. Buy 135 gram — ₹1,161.12

packaging · the void fill that matters most
Air Bubble Roll | Inflatable Air Column Bubble Wrap Roll
An inflatable air-column roll for wrapping glass. The listing we hold does not give a roll length or column size, so ask us and work out your own cost per parcel by counting how many jars one roll wraps. Air columns add little weight for the protection they give, which is the point of this page. For every glass parcel. Limitation: without the roll length, we cannot give you a per-parcel cost; measure it on your first roll.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers
One roll ₹900.00 Count your parcels per roll wrap for your first batch of glass parcels
One roll, then cost per parcel from your own count. Buy a roll — ₹900.00

packaging · a small mailer box
Corrugated Box for Candle Packaging (11 x 11 x 8 cm)
Kraft corrugated mailer with self-locking tabs, 11 × 11 × 8 cm. Its volume is 968 cm³, small enough that, at an assumed divisor of 5,000 (about 0.19 kg), actual weight rather than volumetric weight will usually govern a glass candle (check your courier's divisor). Fits jars about 7 cm wide with room for wrap around the sides; an 8 cm-tall jar leaves no top clearance, so test it. The larger 7 x 5 x 4 inch 3-ply box is ₹1,336.00 per 50 (₹26.72 each); the 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box is out of stock on 26 September 2026. Limitation: a single-wall mailer is a starting point; test-ship before you trust it.

When a heavy jar is worth it

Heavy glass is not wrong; it is wrong for the first months of an online-only brand. It earns its place in four situations:

1. Sold in person. At markets, pop-ups and your own studio, a heavy jar's weight in the hand is part of the sale and there is no courier step.

2. Sold to shops in bulk. Many candles in one carton spread freight across units, and a shelf rewards presence. Ask your courier or transporter for carton rates.

3. Gifting at a price that absorbs the step. A bridal or corporate gift candle priced well above your everyday range can carry a second weight step and a rigid gift box; price the step in.

4. Large candles that start in a higher step anyway. A 500 g or 700 g candle is already over 0.5 kg; the question is only whether the jar and lid push it one step further. Weigh and check.

Our recommendation for an online launch: one small, lidded glass jar (or a tin) that keeps the packed parcel in your courier's first step, air-column wrap and a snug box, and a five-parcel test shipment before you open orders. Add a heavy statement jar as a gifting edition once you have three months of your own courier and breakage figures. What luxury presentation needs beyond weight is in the luxury-presentation guide, and the full scale-up decision across look, safety, shipping and cost is the scale capstone.

Argued against our own interest: we sell the Apothecary dome-lid jars, the clip-top and the 600 g borosilicate jar, and they look wonderful. For your first online range, do not start with them. Start light, measure, and let your own numbers tell you when a heavy jar will pay.

Diwali 8 November 2026 is 43 days after 26 September 2026. Courier networks are busy around the festival, so plan backwards: order jars and packaging this week, weigh and test-ship five parcels by about 8 October, set your shipping charges from real steps, and pour production by mid-October. Send us your jar, box and quantity for a GST-invoiced quote and a dispatch date from Pune.

The CSI principle
Pay for glass once and for packaging once. Never pay for an extra courier step on every order without deciding to.
Find each product's glass weight budget, choose a jar inside it, hold the jar still in a snug box, and test-ship before launch. Heavy jars come later, where the price or the channel carries them.
"A heavy jar feels premium in your hand and costs you on every order. Weigh the parcel before you fall for the glass."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the heavy statement jars and the light jars on this page, and the packaging, and does not sell finished candles. We are telling you not to launch online with our dearest jars, that none of our listings states a jar weight, and that we cannot give you a per-parcel cost for our own bubble roll without its length.

Every price and per-unit figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in the pick tables is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock packaging is named. Capacity, heat and lid wording is quoted from the product pages.

Courier charges (₹60.00 and ₹40.00 per step), the 0.5 kg step, the 5,000 divisor, packaging weights, breakage rates (1 in 50, 1 in 100) and the ₹10.00 packaging upgrade are illustrative worked-example inputs, not quotes or data; the recommendation is editorial judgement. CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish freight rates. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Are heavy glass candle jars bad for shipping?
They cost more only if they push the packed parcel into a higher courier weight step, but then they cost on every order. Heavier glass is not automatically less likely to break; the box and void fill matter more.
How do couriers in India charge for candle parcels?
Terms vary by courier, but billing commonly uses weight steps and the higher of actual and volumetric weight (box volume divided by the courier's divisor). Check your own courier's rate card and divisor; CSI does not publish courier rates.
How much should a candle jar weigh for online selling?
There is no single figure. Work out a glass weight budget: your courier's next step minus the candle minus the packed box. In our worked example, a 150 g candle leaves about 270 g for jar and lid under a 0.5 kg step.
What is the best way to pack a glass candle for courier?
Wrap it in air-column or bubble wrap, hold it still in a snug box with clearance on every side, protect the lid and wax surface, and test-ship a few parcels to different cities before launch.
Does CSI publish the weight of its candle jars?
No CSI jar listing states an empty-jar weight. Buy a small pack, weigh the jar and lid on a scale reading to 1 g, and pack one exactly as you will ship it.
Should I use tins instead of glass jars for online candles?
Tins remove glass breakage and are light; they can dent, which is cosmetic. CSI's Tin Containers are ₹70.80 and ₹96.76 per tin in packs of 12, a sensible way to start while you learn your courier and breakage figures.
Light jar, good box, real numbers
Ten jars, fifty boxes, one roll of air-column wrap: ₹2,965.00.
Weigh the jar, pack a parcel exactly as you will ship it, check it against your courier's steps, and send five to friends in different cities. Launch when the parcels arrive whole and the step is the one you planned.

About this guide: whether an online candle brand should avoid very heavy glass jars: how courier weight steps and volumetric weight turn grams into cost (hedged, no real courier rates), a glass weight budget per candle size, a worked example of the cost of crossing a step, breakage costed against packaging, packing practice for glass, jar and packaging picks for an online launch, and when heavy jars are worth it.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Black Glass Jar with Black Lid (150 gram) (Deliveries Starting 5th Dec), Eco Candle Wicks, Fresh Strawberries, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles, Premium Coconut Soy Wax, Soy Pillar Wax (Specially made for Pillar and Designer Candles). They are general product reviews, not assessments of the container advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Manasa GN, Kaushiki Satarkar, Dipali Sable, Biny Abraham, Subhankar Roy. The reviews from Kavitha murthy are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: candle weights are from listing capacities (the 200 ml family's 150 g is a worked-example planning figure); packaging weights, the 0.5 kg step, courier charges, the 5,000 divisor, breakage rates and the packaging upgrade are illustrative inputs for the arithmetic, not courier quotes or breakage data. Replacement cost assumes a 150 g candle at 8% (138 g of wax) and excludes oil, labour, packaging and GST. Dates are calendar facts; the Diwali plan is a worked schedule, not a delivery promise.
