I'm Launching Five Candle Fragrances — Is It Better to Use One Common Jar or Different Jars for Each Fragrance?
Share
How much testing does it save? In our test plan, 26 test candles with one jar against 40 with five different jars (54% more), and five fill weights, wick records, label sizes and carton fits to maintain instead of one.
Can I still make the five look different? Yes, without changing the glass shape: CSI's 200 ml Matte family lists thirteen in-stock colours and finishes with the same stated 8 × 7 cm dimensions at ₹70.80 each, so colour costs nothing extra there.
When do different jars make sense? When the jar is part of what the buyer is paying for: a different size or price tier, a hero fragrance in a premium vessel, a limited seasonal edition or a gift format.

What one common jar holds constant
A candle is a system: jar, wax, fragrance, wick, fill weight, headspace, lid, label, carton. When you launch five fragrances, the fragrance is the one variable you want to change. Everything else you change alongside it multiplies the work. With one common jar these stay fixed across all five:
| Fixed item | With one jar | With five different jars |
|---|---|---|
| Fill weight | one measured figure (e.g. about 150 g in a 200 ml Matte jar, worked example) | five water-fills and five test pours |
| Wax per candle | one recipe card: 138 g wax + 12 g oil at 8% | five recipe cards with different gram figures |
| Wick bracket | once, on one internal diameter | five brackets, one per diameter |
| Headspace and lid | one fill line, one lid check | five fill lines, up to five lid types |
| Label and net quantity | one label size, one net-quantity figure | five label sizes and five figures to verify |
| Carton and courier box | one box that fits every candle | several boxes, or one box that fits some badly |
| Reordering | one item, one stock level to watch | five items, five minimum packs, five stock-outs to fear |
The first three rows are one-off launch work; the last four repeat on every production run for as long as the range exists. That is why the operational case for one jar gets stronger over time, not weaker. A maker who pours 100 candles a month in one jar weighs one figure and reorders one item; a maker with five jars is managing a small warehouse.
Net quantity is five times the checking
If you print a net weight on the label, each jar needs its own verified figure, and each figure must be checked on every batch. India's Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules govern net-quantity declarations on pre-packaged goods; check the current requirements for your product and channel (this is not legal advice). One jar means one figure to verify. How brands set the net weight for a new jar covers the method.
The test-candle maths
Here is the test plan behind the diagram, costed on CSI's live prices. It is our planning framework, not an industry standard; the aim is to compare like with like.
| A · one common jar | B · five different jars | |
|---|---|---|
| Test candles | 26 | 40 |
| Jars bought | 30 Matte (3 packs of 10) | 10 Matte + 10 Salsa clear + 10 Clear 150 g + 10 Black Shiny 120 g + 8 Green Iridescent 300 g |
| Jar spend | ₹2,124.00 | ₹3,725.20 |
| Wax (CSI 464 at the flat 1–10 kg rate) | ₹1,820.55 (26 × 138 g) | ₹3,248.98 (fills of 150, 150, 150, 120 and 300 g) |
| Wick brackets run | 1 | 5 |
| Fill weights measured | 1 | 5 |
The five-jar plan costs ₹1,601.20 more in test jars and ₹1,428.43 more in wax, and those are the small numbers. The larger cost is time: every extra bracket is days of curing and hours of burning and note-taking. If you burn test candles in four-hour sessions after work, 14 extra candles is weeks of evenings.
One jar is not one wick: where fragrance still matters
This is the part of the one-jar argument that gets oversold. Fixing the jar fixes the internal diameter, the depth and the glass, which is most of what decides wick size. It does not fix the fragrance, and fragrance oils differ in how they burn. A dense gourmand like Roasted Coffee (coffee bean, dark chocolate and espresso over a vanilla and caramel base, as its page describes it) and a bright Citrus Lemon can want different wicks in the same glass. That is why step 2 brackets with two contrasting fragrances, and why step 3 load-tests every fragrance rather than assuming.
In practice, one of three things happens. Often, one wick covers all five with each fragrance at its own best load. Sometimes one fragrance needs the neighbouring rung (C1 instead of C2, say), which is still far simpler than five brackets: same jar, same fill, one line on the recipe card changes. Occasionally a fragrance needs a load outside what the others need, and you decide whether it belongs in the range. Why one wick can work with one fragrance and tunnel with another and whether different oils need different wicks in the same jar go deeper on the wick side.
| Oil | Family (as described) | Page's candle wording | Per gram | Oil per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jasmine Fragrance Oil | white floral | "Recommended load up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin" | ₹3.92 (500 g) | ₹47.06 |
| Lavender Fragrance Oil | herbal/aromatic | "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles" | ₹5.24 (500 g) | ₹62.88 |
| Sandalwood Fragrance Oil | woody | "Recommended load up to 10% for soy, up to 6% for paraffin" | ₹5.03 (500 g) | ₹60.32 |
| Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil | citrus | "candles (6-10%)" | ₹2.84 (500 g) | ₹34.08 |
| Roasted Coffee Fragrance | coffee gourmand | "candles (6-10%)" | ₹3.78 (500 g) | ₹45.36 |
All five pages state a candle maximum of 10%, and Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 also states "up to 10%", so the lower of the two ceilings is 10% for every fragrance: test 6%, 8% and 10%, and pick the load that performs, not the maximum. The oil cost per candle ranges from ₹34.08 (Citrus Lemon) to ₹62.88 (Lavender), a spread of ₹28.80. Put in a common jar with 138 g of CSI 464 and a C2 wick (₹150.26 before oil), a Citrus Lemon candle costs ₹184.34 in materials and a Lavender one ₹213.14, excluding labour, freight, packaging and GST. The page describes Lavender's oil as "IFRA-certified"; we report that as the page's wording only, and documentation is available on request on WhatsApp.
Stock: why one jar protects you from uneven sales
Five fragrances rarely sell evenly, and at launch you do not know which will lead. This is where one jar quietly earns its keep. A worked example with illustrative sales:
| Fragrance | Sold | Five jars (25 of each) | One common jar (125 shared) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender | 40 | runs out at 25: 15 sales lost | 40 poured and sold |
| Jasmine | 25 | 25 sold, none left | 25 poured and sold |
| Roasted Coffee | 20 | 5 jars idle | 20 poured and sold |
| Sandalwood | 10 | 15 jars idle | 10 poured and sold |
| Citrus Lemon | 5 | 20 jars idle | 5 poured and sold |
| Result | 100 | 85 sold, 15 lost, 40 idle jars in the wrong shape | 100 sold, 25 jars (₹1,770.00) left for any fragrance |
With five jars, the fragrance that sold best is the one you ran out of, while the jars you did not need sit in the wrong shape. With one jar, the shelf follows the demand. This is also why a one-jar launch pairs well with pouring to order: keep jars, wax and oil on hand, and pour the fragrance that is selling. How much jar stock to hold against a two-to-four-week restock handles the reorder side.
One real risk runs the other way: with one jar, a stock-out of that jar stops all five fragrances at once. On 26 September 2026, three colours in the Matte family were out of stock while thirteen were available. If your five fragrances are colour-coded, a single colour going out of stock only affects one fragrance, and you can swap it to a neighbouring colour of the same geometry for a batch. Five fragrances, one jar: how to tell them apart
Customers need to tell your fragrances apart at a glance, on a shelf and in a photograph. You have four levers that do not change the glass shape, in rough order of cost.
| Lever | Cost per candle | Effect on production | Honest limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Label colour or design | your label cost only | none: same jar, same pour | weakest on a shelf seen from a distance |
| Glass colour, 200 ml Matte family | nothing extra: ₹70.80 in every in-stock colour | one wick record, if the colours measure the same | separate listings: measure each colour; three colours out of stock |
| Glass colour, 150 g lidded family | ₹12.60 more than clear (₹107.00 vs ₹94.40) | same stated rim and base | coloured pages have copy errors; Amber out of stock |
| Glass colour, 200ml Salsa | ₹32.50 more than clear at 50 (₹62.00 vs ₹29.50) | same lug cap | no dimensions listed; confirm glass colour |
| Wax colour (liquid dye) | depends on your dose; the page states none | dye goes in before wick tests | soy gives lighter shades; Green and Yellow liquid out of stock |
A sensible default: one glass colour for the whole range (white or black reads as a brand), label colour for the fragrance, and wax colour only if the fragrance has an obvious colour story. Colour-coded glass is the bolder route and works well in the Matte family, where it costs nothing extra. Whichever route you pick, keep one principle: the customer recognises the brand by the jar and the fragrance by the label. Comparing clear, amber, frosted and coloured jars for consistency covers how finishes behave across batches.
When different jars are the right call
One jar is the default, not a rule. Different jars earn their place when the jar is part of what the customer is buying, not just a container for the fragrance.
| Situation | Why a different jar makes sense | How to keep it manageable |
|---|---|---|
| A different size or price tier | a 300 g candle is a different product from a 150 g one | add one size, not five; see one jar for 150, 200 and 250 g |
| A hero fragrance | your best seller deserves a premium vessel and price | keep the other four in the common jar |
| A limited seasonal edition | a distinct jar signals "only for Diwali" or "only this winter" | buy only the quantity you will pour; no reorders |
| A gift or corporate format | lidded, boxed or engraved jars suit gifting | one gifting jar for all fragrances; see I Want One Jar to Work for Retail Candles, Wedding Gifting and Corporate Orders — What Size, Appearance and Packaging Factors Should I Prioritise? |
| A fragrance that fails in the common jar | after honest load and wick tests, it still misbehaves | first ask whether it belongs in the launch at all |
Notice what is not on the list: "each fragrance deserves its own personality". Personality is what labels, names and colours are for. The jar is the part you want customers to recognise across the whole range; the label is the part that tells them which fragrance they are holding.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars, oils, wicks and dyes named here and does not sell finished candles. This page recommends buying fewer kinds of jar from us, and it names the copy errors and out-of-stock colours on our own listings. A simple range is easier to make well, and makers who make well reorder.
Every price, per-jar and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock colours and dyes are named. Dimensions, capacities, loads and heat wording are quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.
