Quick answers — read this first
How much extra wax for 1,000 corporate candles? Worked example, 150 g at 8%: the exact fill needs 138 kg of wax. Melt about 6.7% more blend (a working buffer of 10 kg: 147.2 kg of wax and 12.8 kg of oil), and keep one further 10 kg bag of wax sealed and unscented as insurance.

What is the buffer for? Four corporate-specific jobs: client approval samples, production rejects and test candles, replacement units for breakage or complaints after delivery, and melter residue.

What does it cost? The working buffer is ₹11,899.12 in wax, oil, jars and wicks (₹11.90 per candle); the sealed reserve is ₹10,100.80, and it is still usable stock if you never open it.

Too much or too little: which is worse? Too little. Surplus unscented wax waits for the next order; a shortfall of 30 candles at the end of a corporate order holds up the delivery and, in our worked example, ₹13,500.00 of invoice.
The short answer
The rule: size the buffer in candles (samples, rejects, test candles, replacements), add residue per melt, and keep any extra insurance as sealed, unscented wax rather than as melted blend.
The numbers: 1,040 jars poured in 20 melts + 4 kg residue = 160 kg of blend: 147.2 kg of wax (6.7% over the exact 138 kg) and 12.8 kg of oil. Plus 10 kg of wax sealed: 15.9% more wax on hand than exact.
The order: 16 × 10 kg CSI 464 (₹81,184.00), 14 × 1 kg Sandalwood (₹70,375.20), 1,040 jars (₹73,632.00), 1,050 wicks (₹9,912.00): ₹235,103.20 including the sealed reserve.

A corporate order runs for weeks, and the buffer is not spent at once. Sample candles are used before the client approves anything; rejects, test candles and residue are used in the three production days; replacement units are set aside at packing and used, if at all, after delivery. The sealed reserve bag is bought with the bulk order and opened only if something goes wrong. Dates are drawn to scale from 26 September 2026; the delivery date is a worked example.
Straight answer
I'm making 1,000 jar candles for a corporate order. How much extra wax should I prepare beyond the exact calculated fill weight?
In our worked example, about 6.7% extra blend to melt, plus one sealed bag in reserve. Start from the exact figure: 1,000 candles of 150 g at 8% contain 138 kg of wax and 12 kg of oil. A corporate order then needs buffer for four jobs the exact figure ignores: client approval samples (10 candles, poured before the bulk order), production rejects and test candles (20 rejects, 10 test candles), replacement units held back for breakage or complaints after delivery (10), and melter residue (200 g per melt over 20 melts). That is 1,040 jars poured plus 4 kg of residue, 160 kg of blend: 147.2 kg of wax and 12.8 kg of oil, 6.7% more wax than exact. Then buy one more 10 kg bag of CSI 464 and keep it sealed and unscented, with a sealed 1 kg of oil: insurance for rejects running high or late additions, which costs ₹10,100.80 and remains stock if unused. The rates are our judgement, not data; replace them with your own after the first melts. What you should not do is melt the insurance "to be safe": scented surplus has no second use.
One line: melt about 7% more blend than the exact fill weight, and hold a further 10 kg of wax sealed; unscented surplus is stock, scented surplus is loss.

The exact figure, and why corporate orders need more than it

The exact fill weight is the weight of 1,000 perfect candles. A corporate order is not 1,000 perfect candles; it is 1,000 delivered ones.

The exact figure is simple. One finished candle, weighed in your jar at your fill line; in the series worked example the CSI 200 ml Matte jar holds about 150 g (how 200 ml becomes about 150 g). At 8%, 12 g of that is oil and 138 g is wax. Times 1,000: 138 kg of wax and 12 kg of oil, 150 kg of blend. At the listed prices the exact wax is ₹70,021.20 and the exact oil, with Sandalwood, ₹60,321.60.

Three things make a corporate order different from a retail run of the same size, and all three push the buffer up.

The last row is why the buffer matters more than its size suggests. If you run out and reorder, the top-up comes from a different bag, a different oil bottle and possibly a different carton of jars; mass-produced glass varies between batches. Thirty candles that look slightly different from the other 970 in a boardroom are a problem a retail customer would never see.

Mistake: quoting the client on 1,000 candles and ordering materials for exactly 1,000. What happens: the first two rejects make it 998, the test candle you burn makes it 997, and the last melt is short. Fix: count every jar you will pour, not the candles on the purchase order.

Samples come before the buffer, not out of it

Client samples are poured weeks before you buy 160 kg, from small packs, and they decide which oil you buy fourteen kilograms of. Do not open a 10 kg bag for them. About 2 kg of wax in 1 kg bags, a 100 g bottle of each candidate oil, a pack of 10 jars and 10 wicks cover ten samples and leave room for a revision: ₹2,773.00 with Sandalwood and Woody Oud as the pair. Keep one approved candle sealed as the golden sample; every later melt is compared with it.

Replacement units are finished candles, not spare wax

If a carton arrives with two broken jars, the client wants two candles, not your promise to make them. So replacement units are poured in the same melts as the order, cured with it, and boxed with it or kept ready to send. We plan 10 as a worked example. Buffer rates that should change
Raise rejects to 3–5% if this is your first run above 500, if several people are pouring, or if the jar is new to you. Raise replacements if the client ships to many addresses rather than one. Lower residue if you melt in large, weighed batches. Every one of these is your call; the table is a starting point.

Working buffer vs sealed reserve

Two kinds of extra: blend you plan to use, and wax you plan not to.

The working buffer is the 10 kg of blend above: it is scented, it is melted, and nearly all of it is used, because rejects, test candles, replacements and residue are all things that happen. It adds 6.7% to the wax you melt. The sealed reserve is different in kind. It is one 10 kg bag of CSI 464 and one 1 kg bottle of Sandalwood that you buy with the order and do not open unless something goes wrong: rejects run at 5% instead of 2%, a melt fails, the client adds 50 names in the last week, or a carton breaks after delivery and you have used your replacement units. That is another 7.2% of wax, which, with the 2.8 kg left in the fifteenth production bag, brings the wax on hand to 15.9% above the exact figure.

Why keep the reserve as wax and not as extra candles? Because unscented wax can become any candle, and a finished Sandalwood candle can only become a Sandalwood candle. If the reserve is never opened, the only cost is the cash tied up in one bag and one bottle until your next order.

Argued against our own interest: do not buy the whole buffer as scented oil "in case". The oil is the expensive part of the blend: at these prices a gram of Sandalwood costs about ten times a gram of CSI 464. A sealed 1 kg bottle is enough reserve for about 80 candles at 8%; buy more only if the client has already hinted at a second order in the same scent.

The cost of too much vs too little

Too much is a storage problem. Too little is a delivery problem. Price them differently.

The question behind "how much extra" is really which mistake you can afford. The two are not symmetrical, and the worked example below shows why. The ₹ figures use CSI prices on 26 September 2026; the invoice price is illustrative, so plug in your own.

Two conclusions. First, the best-value insurance is unscented, because it keeps its value: the reserve bag costs ₹5,074.00 and is spent eventually either way. Second, the costly failure is running short, and most of that cost is time. A top-up order costs the same per gram as the original at CSI (CSI 464 is flat from 1 kg; Sandalwood is flat from 100 g), so you do not lose on price; you lose the days between noticing and delivering, and the batch match. Delivery times are not published; confirm them on WhatsApp before you promise a client a date.

A shortfall you can see coming
If rejects in the first four melts run above your plan, recalculate at once: at 50 rejects out of 1,040 poured (4.8%), you will end 30 short. Open the reserve bag then, while the oil and jars are from the same lot, not on the last day.

Running the buffer during production

A buffer you do not track is just extra wax. Count it down melt by melt.

Check lots on arrivalNote the wax bag and oil bottle details. If the oil arrives as bottles that differ, combine them in one clean container before the first melt, so all 1,040 jars share one blend.

When the right purchase is smaller: if the client has not yet approved a scent, the only thing to buy is the sample set. We would sell you 160 kg of wax today; we would rather sell it to you after the approval, when you know which oil the fourteen kilograms should be.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra wax should I buy for a 1,000 candle order?
In our worked example (150 g at 8%), melt about 6.7% more blend than exact, 147.2 kg of wax instead of 138 kg, and hold one further 10 kg bag sealed. That puts 15.9% more wax on hand than the exact figure, most of it unscented.
How many extra candles should I make for a corporate order?
We plan 40 extra poured jars per 1,000: 20 for rejects, 10 test candles and 10 finished replacement units, plus 10 client samples before the order. These are planning figures, not data; adjust for your reject history and courier experience.
Is it better to have leftover wax or run short on a bulk candle order?
Leftover, if it is unscented: a sealed bag is stock for the next order. Running short means a late or split delivery and candles from a different lot. Scented leftover is the one surplus to avoid, so do not melt the insurance.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 1,000 candles at 8%?
12 kg exactly for 150 g candles; 12.8 kg with the working buffer. With Sandalwood that is 13 × 1 kg (₹65,348.40), plus one sealed 1 kg as reserve if the client may add units.
Should client samples come out of the production wax?
No. Pour samples weeks earlier from small packs (about 2 kg of wax and 100 g of each candidate oil), and order the bulk only after the client approves. Keep one approved candle sealed as the golden sample.
When should I use the reserve wax during production?
As soon as your melt log shows you will finish short, typically after four or five melts. Opening it early keeps every candle on the same wax and oil lot; opening it on the last day does not.
