I'm Making 500 Candles a Month — What Quantities of Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wicks and Jars Should I Buy to Reduce My Cost per Candle?
Share
Which quantities lower my cost per candle? Oil: never produce from 15 g testers; 100 g and above removes a median 23.1% premium. Natural Soy Pearl: 5 kg bags save ₹25.20 a kg. Some jars (200 ml Salsa: ₹40.12 each in 5s, ₹29.50 in 50s). Nothing else moves.
Which quantities never change the price? Eco Candle Wicks are ₹5.90 each from 10 to 1,000. The White Matte Glass Jar is sold in fives at ₹70.80 each. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are ₹599.00 a kg in 1 kg and 5 kg bags, and CSI 464 is ₹507.40 a kg from 1 kg.
What moves cost per candle more than pack size? Choices. Switching the Chunks to CSI 464 saves ₹16.85 a candle on wax alone; oil choice can move it by ₹70 or more. See the real levers.
The 500-candle month, in quantities
This page uses the series' working candle: 200 g, container, 8% fragrance load, so 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, with one wick and one jar. The month is 500 sellable candles across five scents of 100 candles each, a common shape for a small brand at this size. Every material gets a 4% allowance for pour loss, test burns and breakage; plan 3–5% and use your own figure once you have tracked it.
| Material | Per candle | For 500 candles | With 4% allowance | What you buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | 184 g | 92.0 kg | 95.68 kg | 96 kg (19 × 5 kg + 1 × 1 kg) |
| Fragrance oil (per scent, 100 candles) | 16 g | 1.6 kg | 1.664 kg | 1.7 kg (1 kg + 500 g + 2 × 100 g) |
| Fragrance oil (all five scents) | 16 g | 8.0 kg | 8.32 kg | 8.5 kg |
| Wick | 1 | 500 | 520 | 500-pack + 20-pack |
| Jar | 1 | 500 | 520 | 104 packs of 5 |
Two things stand out at this scale. Wax is by far the heaviest item, but it is one line: every candle uses the same wax, so it is simple to plan. Fragrance is five separate lines, each with its own price ladder and its own sales risk, so it needs a decision per scent. Wicks and jars are counted, not weighed, and they break or get rejected, so the allowance on them is not optional. Which materials get cheaper in bigger packs
Here is every material in the 500-candle month, with what the listed price does as the pack grows. This is the heart of the title question: quantity only reduces cost per candle where the price per unit falls with the pack.
| Material | Smallest listed | Largest listed | Per-unit change | Buy for 500 candles |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | ₹299.00 / 500 g (₹598.00/kg) | ₹5,999.00 / 10 kg (₹599.90/kg) | None | 5 kg bags; size by storage |
| CSI 464 | ₹260.00 / 500 g (₹520.00/kg) | ₹5,074.00 / 10 kg (₹507.40/kg) | 2.4% from 500 g to 1 kg, then none | Any pack from 1 kg |
| Natural Soy Pearl | ₹450.00 / 1 kg | ₹21,240.00 / 50 kg (₹424.80/kg) | 5.6% at 5 kg, then none | 5 kg or larger, never 1 kg |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | ₹59.00 / 10 | ₹5,900.00 / 1,000 | None — ₹5.90 each | Any pack; 1,000 = two months |
| Cotton Braided Wicks | ₹120.00 / 10 | ₹12,000.00 / 1,000 | None — ₹12.00 each | Any pack |
| White Matte Glass Jar | ₹354.00 / 5 | ₹354.00 / 5 (only pack listed) | None listed — ask for a quote | 104 packs, or a WhatsApp quote |
| 200 ml Salsa Jar, golden lug cap | ₹200.60 / 5 (₹40.12 each) | ₹2,950.00 / 100 (₹29.50 each) | 26.5% at 50 | 50 or 100 if this is your jar |
| Fragrance oils | 15 g | 1 kg | Median 23.1% premium at 15 g vs 100 g; 1 kg within ±1% of 100 g for 52 of 91 oils | 100 g and up; 1 kg where the oil breaks |
So for the default candle, three of the four lines do not respond to quantity at all on the listed prices: the Chunks, the Eco wick and the White Matte jar. That is not a flaw in the plan; it simply means buying 1,000 wicks instead of 500 does not make a candle cheaper, it only means fewer orders. The jar is the heaviest cost line after wax and oil, at ₹70.80 a candle, and the only route to a lower per-jar price on it is a quote for a larger quantity. No discount figure is published, so ask rather than assume. By contrast, the 200 ml Salsa jar with its golden lug cap drops from ₹40.12 each in fives to ₹29.50 in fifties, a real break, though it is a different jar whose fill weight is not published; weigh a filled one before you cost a candle in it.
Fragrance: where quantity pays
Each of the five scents needs about 1.66 kg a month with the allowance. The table prices one candle's 16 g at three pack sizes, then the month's 1.7 kg two ways: as seventeen 100 g bottles, and as a 1 kg plus a 500 g plus two 100 g bottles.
| Oil | Oil per candle from 15 g | from 100 g | from 1 kg | 1.7 kg as 17 × 100 g | 1.7 kg as 1 kg + 500 g + 2 × 100 g | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Rose | ₹100.69 | ₹54.75 | ₹49.09 | ₹5,817.40 | ₹5,345.40 | 8.1% |
| Jasmine | ₹109.87 | ₹68.80 | ₹62.77 | ₹7,310.00 | ₹6,744.00 | 7.7% |
| Mango Coconut | ₹99.43 | ₹80.00 | ₹63.42 | ₹8,500.00 | ₹6,946.00 | 18.3% |
| Lavender | ₹112.02 | ₹86.40 | ₹83.54 | ₹9,180.00 | ₹8,921.00 | 2.8% |
| Fresh Strawberries | ₹120.83 | ₹60.42 | ₹56.64 | ₹6,419.20 | ₹6,065.20 | 5.5% |
| Five scents | ₹37,226.60 | ₹34,021.60 | 8.6% |
Across the five scents, buying the month in larger bottles saves ₹3,205.00, or 8.6%. But look at where it comes from. Mango Coconut, which breaks at 500 g, carries almost half of it on its own; Lavender barely moves. The larger step is the one from 15 g: pouring British Rose from 15 g testers costs ₹100.69 a candle against ₹49.09 from the kilo. If any production still comes out of testers, that is the first fix. The real levers on cost per candle
Pack size is one lever. At 500 candles a month, two others are bigger: which wax, and which oil. The table shows what each wax costs inside one candle.
| Wax and pack | Wax per candle | Per 500 candles (before allowance) | Fragrance-load ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (any pack, ₹599.00/kg) | ₹110.22 | ₹55,108.00 | Up to 13% (wax maker's stated maximum) |
| CSI 464 (any pack from 1 kg, ₹507.40/kg) | ₹93.36 | ₹46,680.80 | Up to 10% (wax maker's stated maximum) |
| Natural Soy Pearl 1 kg (₹450.00/kg) | ₹82.80 | ₹41,400.00 | Not quoted here — check the product page |
| Natural Soy Pearl 5 kg+ (₹424.80/kg) | ₹78.16 | ₹39,081.60 | Not quoted here — check the product page |
Moving from Luxury Soy Wax Chunks to CSI 464 takes ₹16.85 off every candle, ₹8,427.20 a month at 500 candles. That is several times what all the pack-size moves on oil save. It is a formulation change, though: CSI 464 is rated up to 10% fragrance load against the Chunks' 13%, and a new wax needs new burn tests in your jar before a customer sees it. The oil lever is bigger still. At 16 g a candle, British Rose from the kilo costs ₹49.09 and Lavender ₹83.54; a premium oil can cost several times that. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a page about buying more to cut cost per candle, the convenient advice for us would be "buy every line in its biggest pack". Our own listed prices show that wicks, the White Matte jar and two of our three soy waxes cost the same per unit in any pack, so this page says so and points you to the lines where quantity does pay.
Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and Salsa jar prices are from the 25 September 2026 catalogue pull; the White Matte Glass Jar is Blog 760's figure, verified 10 September 2026. Out-of-stock sizes are not priced as buyable. Quantities, per-candle costs and totals are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals so you can check them.
The 200 g candle, 8% load, five scents of 100 candles and 4% allowance are working assumptions, not a recipe. Material cost excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. Non-price figures and assumptions: 500 candles a month is the reader's figure; five scents of 100 candles each is an illustrative split. Each candle is 200 g at an 8% load (184 g wax, 16 g oil), one wick and one jar. The 4% allowance is a working assumption within 3–5%. The 15 g median premium of 23.1% over 100 g is across 55 oils listing both; 52 of 91 oils are within ±1% between 100 g and 1 kg. Fill weight of the Salsa jar is not published. Fragrance-load ceilings (Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%) are the wax makers' stated maximums, not regulatory limits. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
