I'm Making Large Three-Wick Candles — Do I Need Different Fragrance Oils Than I Use in Smaller Jars?
Share
How much fragrance oil goes in a three-wick candle? At 8%, 32 g in an illustrative 400 g candle and 48 g in a 600 g one. The ceilings do not change with size: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%.
Does CSI sell three-wick jars? No three-wick jar is listed in the catalogue on the pull date. Ask on WhatsApp whether CSI can supply one; the costings on this page leave the jar out.
Which wick should I use? Wick sizes for jar diameters are not published in our data. Test three Eco Thin C1 (₹17.70 a set), three Eco Thick C2 (₹28.32) or three Cotton Braided (₹36.00). See wicks.
Why the same oils work
Fragrance load is oil as a share of the finished weight. In a 200 g candle at 8%, 16 g of oil sits in 184 g of wax. In a 600 g candle at 8%, 48 g sits in 552 g. The ratio is identical, so every gram of wax in the big candle carries exactly as much fragrance as every gram in the small one. Nothing about the oil needs to change for that to be true.
What does change is how much of that wax is melted at once. A three-wick candle is wide, and three flames melt a large pool quickly. More molten surface generally means more scent in the air, which is why big candles are commonly bought for living rooms and open spaces. That is a property of the candle's design, not a stronger oil. It is also the reason to test every oil in the large format before you sell it: a sweet gourmand that is cosy in a bedroom jar can feel overpowering from a pool three times the size, and a light fresh scent that disappears in a small jar may come into its own in a big one. We have not published throw measurements for any oil, so the burn test decides.
The load ceilings do not change with size either. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10% — the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits. A bigger candle is not a reason to push towards them. If the big candle feels weak, the wick and the pool are the first suspects, as with any container. Fragrance Oils for Large Three-Wick Jar Candles lists oils for three-wick jars; this page is about what changes when you scale up the oils you already have.
What actually changes
Here is the same oil, Woody Oud, at the same 8% load, in a single-wick 200 g jar and in two illustrative three-wick sizes. Wax is Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo; wicks are Eco Thin C1 at ₹5.90 each. The jar is left out, because CSI does not list a three-wick jar — add your own vessel's cost to the last column.
| Format | Oil | Wax | Wicks | Oil cost | Wax cost | Wick cost | Oil + wax + wicks | Candles per 100 g of oil | Candles per 1 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single-wick jar (e.g. White Matte Glass Jar) | 16 g | 184 g | 1 | ₹72.50 | ₹110.22 | ₹5.90 | ₹188.62 | 6.25 | 62.50 |
| Three-wick, illustrative 400 g | 32 g | 368 g | 3 | ₹145.00 | ₹220.43 | ₹17.70 | ₹383.13 | 3.12 | 31.25 |
| Three-wick, illustrative 600 g | 48 g | 552 g | 3 | ₹217.50 | ₹330.65 | ₹17.70 | ₹565.85 | 2.08 | 20.83 |
Three things stand out. Oil and wax scale exactly with weight: three times the candle, three times the grams and three times the cost. Wicks do not. A 400 g three-wick candle carries the same wick cost as a 600 g one, so per 100 g of candle its wicks cost ₹4.43 against ₹2.95 for both the 200 g single-wick and the 600 g three-wick. And bottles run out three times faster: one 100 g of oil makes 6.25 small candles and 2.08 large ones, which changes which pack size makes sense.
| Bottle | Price | 200 g candles (16 g) | 400 g candles (32 g) | 600 g candles (48 g) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 g | ₹453.12 | 6.25 | 3.12 | 2.08 |
| 500 g | ₹2,265.60 | 31.25 | 15.62 | 10.42 |
| 1 kg | ₹4,531.20 | 62.50 | 31.25 | 20.83 |
For a small-jar maker, 100 g is a sensible production bottle. For a three-wick maker it is barely a test bottle. Woody Oud is priced at the same ₹4.53 a gram at 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg, so moving up is purely about convenience. For oils with a real kilo saving, such as Fallen Leaves (10.0%), the large format reaches that saving sooner, because it uses oil three times as fast.
Wicks: the real three-wick decision
Three flames close together behave differently from one. They heat each other, the pools must merge, and the whole surface has to melt to the glass for the candle to burn evenly and not tunnel. Wick size for a given vessel diameter is not published in our data, and we will not guess one for you. What we can do is price the three wick types CSI lists so you can test them side by side.
| Wick | Each | Per candle (×3) | 30 candles (90 wicks) | In a 600 g candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | ₹5.90 | ₹17.70 | ₹531.00 | ₹2.95 per 100 g of candle |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2 | ₹9.44 | ₹28.32 | ₹849.60 | ₹4.72 per 100 g of candle |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | ₹12.00 | ₹36.00 | ₹1,080.00 | ₹6.00 per 100 g of candle |
The Eco Thin C1 is ₹5.90 at every pack size from 10 to 1,000, the Thick C2 ₹9.44, and the Cotton Braided Ready Made ₹12.00. For three wicks you also need a way to hold them upright while the wax sets; wick stickers are ₹100.00 for 40, which is ₹7.50 of stickers per three-wick candle. Performance Wooden Wicks are also listed (₹590.00 for 10) if your brand wants a crackling wooden wick, but three per candle at ₹59.00 each adds ₹177.00 to every candle.
Testing an oil in the large format
Your oils have already passed in small jars. The large-format test checks two new things: whether the wicks give a full, clean pool in your vessel, and whether the scent at full pool is pleasant or overwhelming in a room. One 100 g bottle covers three 400 g test candles at 8% (32 g each, 96 g in all) or two 600 g candles with 4 g spare.
A 30-candle run, priced
Say you launch a festive three-wick line: 30 candles at an illustrative 600 g, ten each in three scents. Each scent needs 480 g of oil at 8%, so one 500 g bottle per scent covers it with 20 g (4%) to spare — inside the 3–5% allowance we suggest as a working assumption. The wax need is 16,560 g; with a 3% allowance, 1 × 10 kg + 1 × 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g of Chunks (17.5 kg) is the cheapest combination of listed packs.
| Oil | Needed | Buy | Cost | Oil per candle (48 g at 500 g rate) | Spare |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fallen Leaves | 480 g | 1 × 500 g | ₹2,124.00 | ₹203.90 | 20 g |

If your burn test picks Thick C2 instead, the wick line becomes ₹944.00 for 100; Cotton Braided would be ₹1,200.00 for 100. Before the run, the large-format test adds one 100 g bottle of each oil you have not yet tested at size (Woody Oud's 100 g is ₹453.12). Labour, jars, packaging, freight and GST are all extra.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We do not list a three-wick jar, and we do not publish wick sizes for vessel diameters. This page says both, prices what we do sell, and leaves the jar out of every total rather than guess its cost.
Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and wick-sticker prices from the 25 September 2026 pull. Per-candle, per-bottle and run totals are arithmetic on those prices.
The 400 g and 600 g three-wick sizes are illustrative, not CSI products. The 8% load, cure and burn times and the 3–5% allowance are working assumptions. Load ceilings of up to 13% (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks) and up to 10% (CSI 464) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums.
