I'm Moving From Buying 30 Candle Jars at a Time to 500 — What Should I Check Before Placing My First Wholesale Order?
Share
Will 500 jars be cheaper per jar than 30? On most CSI jar listings, no: they are priced flat per jar. The 200ml Salsa clear jar is 26.5% cheaper per jar from 50 Pcs, but a 50-jar order already gets that price. For quantities beyond the listed packs, ask on WhatsApp.
Why check anything if the jar has worked for months? Because 500 jars concentrate risk: one batch, one delivery, one payment. At 30 a time a bad batch costs you 30 jars; at 500 it costs a season.
What is the single most important check? Gate 1: buy one small pack from the stock you will actually receive and measure it against the jar your wick was tested in. Everything else is a question; this one is evidence.

What changes between 30 jars and 500
When you buy 30 jars at a time, mistakes are cheap and self-correcting. A slightly different batch, a colour that is not quite right, a jar that cracks: you notice, adjust, and the next 30 are better. Moving to 500 changes five things at once.
Risk concentrates. Five hundred jars usually arrive as one batch. If that batch is a millimetre wider inside than the jars your wick was tested in, every candle in the next few months carries the difference. How much a few millimetres matter is covered in the batch-variation post.
Cash concentrates. At ₹70.80 per Matte jar, 30 jars are ₹2,124.00 and 500 are ₹35,400.00, 16.7 times as much paid in one go, before a single candle is sold.
Space appears. Thirty jars fit on a shelf. Five hundred jars of about 7 cm across, standing in one layer, cover roughly 1.4 × 1.75 m (20 rows of 25), before cartons and partitions. Stacked in their cartons they need a dry, stable corner where nothing heavy lands on them.
Inspection becomes a job. Checking 30 jars takes minutes. Checking 500 properly takes hours, and has to happen soon after delivery, while any damage can still be reported. The checklist for that is the jar QC checklist.
The supplier relationship starts to matter. At 30 jars you are a customer; at 500 you depend on stock being there, packed well, invoiced correctly and dispatched on a date. Those are questions to ask, not assume.
What 500 costs at CSI prices, and what it saves
| Jar | 30 jars | Per jar | 500 jars | Per jar | Listed saving at 500 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Matte 200 ml and sisters | 3 × 10: ₹2,124.00 | ₹70.80 | 50 × 10: ₹35,400.00 | ₹70.80 | None: flat per jar |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | 20 + 10: ₹2,832.00 | ₹94.40 | 25 × 20: ₹47,200.00 | ₹94.40 | None: flat per jar |
| 200ml Salsa clear | 6 × 5 Pcs: ₹1,203.60 | ₹40.12 | 5 × 100 Pcs: ₹14,750.00 | ₹29.50 | ₹10.62 a jar, ₹5,310.00 in all, but 50 Pcs (₹1,475.00) already gets it |
So on the listed prices, moving to 500 is not a discount decision for two of these three jars. Most CSI jar listings are priced flat per jar across pack sizes; the Salsa clear jar is the exception here, and its step is at 50, not 500. If you have been buying Salsa jars in 5s, the saving is real (26.5% per jar), but you can have it by buying 50 at a time. Whether a bigger quantity at a lower quoted price is worth tying up cash for is the savings-versus-inventory calculation; when retail packs stop making sense is I'm Scaling My Candle Business — At What Point Should I Move From Retail Packs of Jars to Wholesale Cartons?.
The real savings from 500 are elsewhere. Worked example: suppose each delivery costs you ₹250.00 (an illustrative figure; use your own). Spread over 30 jars that is ₹8.33 a jar; over 500, ₹0.50. Buying 500 jars in 30s takes about 16.7 orders, and seventeen deliveries at that charge are ₹4,250.00. Add the time spent ordering, unpacking and checking seventeen times, and the batch changes you never chose, and the case for one order is operational, not a line on a price list.
The seven gates, one by one
Each gate is a yes-or-no question. The first two need glass in your hands; the rest need answers from the supplier. Pass them in order: there is no point asking about payment for a jar that fails gate 1.
| Gate | Ask or do | Keep | Red flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Sample | Buy a small pack of the exact variant; measure against your spec | Measurements, photo beside an old jar | Fill line or inside diameter visibly different |
| 2 Tolerance | Set a band from your wick tests | The band, written on the spec sheet | Sample outside the band and no time to re-test |
| 3 Stock depth | "Can you supply 500 of this variant from one batch?" | The reply | "Should be fine" with no number |
| 4 Packing | "How are 500 jars packed? What do you need if some break?" | The reply | No partitions described; no damage process |
| 5 Payment | "What is paid when, and how?" | Order confirmation, payment receipt | Pressure to pay before details are confirmed |
| 6 GST invoice | "Invoice with my GSTIN, please" | The invoice | Line items that do not match the order |
| 7 Delivery | "Dispatch date and transit time to my city?" | The date; your inspection plan | Delivery on a day nobody can receive or inspect |
Gate 2 in numbers: why a few millimetres matter
Worked example. Suppose your wick bracket was run in jars you measured at 6.3 cm across the inside at pool height, and the sample from current stock measures 6.6 cm. That is only 3 mm, but the melt pool the wick has to reach grows with the square of the diameter: π × 3.15² is 31.17 cm² and π × 3.3² is 34.21 cm², 9.8% more surface for the same wick. A wick that just reached the glass in your old jars may now leave a ring of solid wax. The reverse, a narrower batch, can mean a hotter jar and a taller flame. Neither is a reason to panic; both are reasons to burn one sample jar to the bottom before 500 are poured. Measure the inside yourself with callipers or a ruler across the opening at pool height: no CSI listing states an internal diameter.
One delivery or two?
If gate 3 or gate 7 comes back uncertain, a 500-jar order does not have to arrive at once. Two deliveries of 250 halve the space problem and let you inspect the first half before the second is dispatched; the cost is a second delivery charge and the chance that the halves come from different batches. One delivery gives you one batch and one inspection, at the price of 500 jars' worth of risk arriving on one day. There is no universal answer: if batch consistency matters most to you (a single wick across the whole season), ask for one batch in one delivery; if space or cash is the constraint, split it and measure the second half against the first.
Read the listing like a spec sheet, ours included
We checked our own jar listings for this series, and they illustrate why gate 1 exists. No CSI jar listing states an internal diameter. Several give a "width" or an outer diameter; some give no dimensions at all. And some carry text copied from another listing. Examples you should know about if you are ordering 500 of them:
| Listing | What the page says | Why it matters at 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Matte / frosted 200 ml sister listings | Some pages name a different colour or finish in their description than in their title | 500 of the wrong finish is a season's stock |
| Black Glass Jar with Black Lid (150 gram) | Title says "Black Lid"; description says "Golden metal lid"; title also says "(Deliveries Starting 5th Dec)" | Lid colour is part of the product; the dispatch text is stale |
| Clear Glass Votive Jar 70 gram | Description mentions "externally frosted purple matte" and "Finish: Matte white" | Which finish arrives? |
| Shot Glass Jar (Pack of 6) 130gram | Title "Pack of 6"; description "pack of five" | Pack count changes your per-jar cost |
| Tin Containers for Candle Making, 85 & 135g | Variants 85 g and 135 g; body text says 100 g and 200 g | Fill weight on your label |
| Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) | Called both "curved" and "straight-sided"; 8 cm height given with and without lid | Label shape and headspace |
None of these is a reason to avoid the jar; each is a reason to confirm the detail in writing before ordering 500, and to measure the sample rather than trust the page. The same applies to any supplier's listing. The day 500 jars arrive
The seven gates get the order placed. The first hours after delivery decide whether it works. Count cartons against the delivery note before the delivery person leaves. Photograph any damaged carton before opening it. Open cartons one at a time, count and inspect the jars, and set rejects aside with their carton number. Report damage within whatever time limit you agreed at gate 4, with the evidence it asked for.
Then measure a handful from different cartons against your spec sheet. A 500-jar order is where you first see batch variation inside one delivery; if a few jars sit outside your band, the options (re-sort, re-wick or reject) and what each costs are in I Received 500 Candle Jars and Some Have Different Internal Diameters — Should I Reject Them If My Wick Was Tested on a Specific Diameter?. For the heat side of a new batch, one full burn-down in a jar from the delivery before you pour all 500 is cheap insurance (the pre-500 heat test).
What to buy for the sample check
Gate 1 is the only gate that costs money: one small pack of the jar you mean to order, and a scale if yours is not good enough. Chosen on what the pages state, pack structure and stock on 26 September 2026, not on burn performance: CSI publishes no burn-down or breakage data for these jars.

|---|---|---|---|

The one message that clears gates 3 to 7
Gates 3 to 7 are questions, and they can all go in one message. Name the exact listing, colour, finish and lid; the quantity; your city; and your GSTIN if you have one. Ask: can you supply this quantity from one batch; how will it be packed and what do you need if some arrive damaged; what are the payment steps; can you issue a GST invoice with my GSTIN; and what is the dispatch date and likely transit time. Here is that message, ready to send to us. The answers are your record if anything goes wrong.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the jars named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you that most of our jar listings carry no discount at 500, that the Salsa clear jar's discount is fully reached at 50, and that several of our own listings carry copied or stale text you should check before a large order. A first 500-jar order that goes smoothly is worth more to us than one that looked bigger.
Every price and per-jar figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock variants are named as such. Listing wording and contradictions are quoted from the product pages as checked on that date.
