I'm Starting a Candle Business and Want 10 Fragrances — Which Materials Should I Buy in Bulk and Which Should I Buy in Small Trial Quantities?
Share
Which should I buy in small trial quantities? The fragrance oils. Ten 15 g testers cost ₹976.56. Ten 100 g bottles cost ₹4,559.90. Also trial the wick sizes, the jar style and any dye until each is proven.
Is bulk actually cheaper at CSI? Often not. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks cost the same per kilo from 500 g to 10 kg, Eco wicks are ₹5.90 each at every pack, and 52 of 91 oils cost within 1% per gram at 1 kg and 100 g. The real breaks are the 15 g → 100 g oil step, dye, some jars and wooden wicks. See the price-break map.
How much should I spend before launch? Stage 1 (test all ten) is ₹6,130.96 with tools. Stage 2 (launch five proven scents) is ₹6,633.12. The list is in the two-stage list.
The rule: shared and decided, or specific and unproven
Most advice on bulk buying starts with the price per kilo. For a business launching ten fragrances, that is the wrong first question. The first question is how certain you are that you will use it. Two properties decide that. Is the item shared — used by every candle regardless of scent — or specific to one scent or style? And is it decided — tested and chosen — or still unproven? Shared and decided items are safe to hold in quantity. Specific or unproven items are not, whatever their price per gram.
| Material | Shared or specific? | What size does to the price | Buy it as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fragrance oils (10 scents) | Scent-specific, unproven | 15 g → 100 g: median 23.1% premium · 100 g → 1 kg: flat for 52 of 91 | Trial (15 g), then 100 g for winners |
| Wax (one type, all scents) | Shared by every candle | Chunks ₹598.00–₹599.90/kg — no break | Bulk once the wax is chosen, for convenience |
| Wicks (Eco Thin C1) | Shared, size unproven | ₹5.90 each at every pack | Trial two sizes, then buy the proven size by need |
| Jars | Shared, style decided early | White Matte: 5-pack only · Salsa 200 ml: 26.5% cheaper at 50 | Trial a 5-pack, bulk only where a break exists |
| Dye | Optional, colour-specific | 15 g → 100 g: 42.8% cheaper per gram | Trial 15 g; 100 g only for a colour you use every week |
| Tools (scale, thermometer, jug) | Shared, one-off | Single items | Buy once, now |
Read the table from the right. Oils go in the trial column because each one is a separate bet: you will almost certainly find that some of your ten do not sell, and a 100 g bottle of a scent nobody buys is money on a shelf. Wax goes in the bulk column because every one of the ten scents uses it. Even if half your fragrances fail, the wax still gets poured into the half that succeed. Wicks and jars start in the trial column and move to bulk once a burn test and a customer reaction have proven them. Whether to test several jars or standardise one covers the jar decision in detail.
Where the real price breaks are
Once you know what is safe to hold, the price per unit tells you whether holding it saves money. On CSI's listed catalogue, the answer is uneven. Some materials are priced flat, so bulk buys convenience only. Others have real steps, and they are not always the ones people expect.
| Material | Smallest pack | Per unit | Largest pack | Per unit | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 500 g ₹299.00 | ₹598.00/kg | 10 kg ₹5,999.00 | ₹599.90/kg | None (10 kg is ₹1.90/kg dearer) |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 500 g ₹260.00 | ₹520.00/kg | 10 kg ₹5,074.00 | ₹507.40/kg | 2.4% (flat from 1 kg) |
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 1 kg ₹450.00 | ₹450.00/kg | 50 kg ₹21,240.00 | ₹424.80/kg | 5.6% (from 5 kg) |
| Fragrance oil (median) | 15 g | median 23.1% over 100 g | 1 kg | within ±1% of 100 g for 52 of 91 | The step is 15 g → 100 g |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 10 ₹59.00 | ₹5.90 | 1,000 ₹5,900.00 | ₹5.90 | None |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | 10 ₹590.00 | ₹59.00 | 100 ₹4,130.00 | ₹41.30 | 30.0% |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar, lug cap | 5 ₹200.60 | ₹40.12 | 50 ₹1,475.00 | ₹29.50 | 26.5% |
| Mini Glass Jars, black | 5 ₹129.80 | ₹25.96 | 100 ₹2,124.00 | ₹21.24 | 18.2% |
| White Matte Glass Jar | 5 ₹354.00 | ₹70.80 | Only the 5-pack listed | — | Ask on WhatsApp for volume |
| Candle Dye Liquid Blue | 15 g ₹236.00 | ₹15.73/g | 100 g ₹900.00 | ₹9.00/g | 42.8% |
Two surprises for a new business. First, the wax you use most has no bulk break. A 10 kg bag of Chunks costs ₹5,999.00, which is ₹599.90 a kilo — fractionally more than the 1 kg at ₹599.00 and the 500 g at ₹598.00 a kilo. Second, the biggest steps are in the small lines: dye, some jars and wooden wicks. They matter only once you have decided to use them, which is the rule again. A 26.5% saving on Salsa jars is worth nothing if you would rather use a White Matte jar.
Ten oils, trial-sized
The ten below cover the main families new customers ask for — fresh, citrus, floral, gourmand, woody, spiced and fruity — and every one has an in-stock 15 g on the pull date. They are examples, not a ranking; we have not published sales or throw data per oil. The last column is the trial premium: how much more a gram costs at 15 g than at 100 g for that oil.
| Oil | Family | 15 g | Per gram at 15 g | Per gram at 100 g | 15 g premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eucalyptus Spearmint | Fresh herbal | ₹68.44 | ₹4.56/g | ₹3.54/g | 28.9% |
| Citrus Lemon | Citrus | ₹81.42 | ₹5.43/g | ₹3.00/g | 80.9% |
| Jasmine | Indian floral | ₹103.00 | ₹6.87/g | ₹4.30/g | 59.7% |
| Japanese Cherry Blossom | Soft floral | ₹104.00 | ₹6.93/g | ₹5.00/g | 38.7% |
| Roasted Coffee | Gourmand | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21/g | ₹3.90/g | 59.4% |
| Woody Oud | Woody | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21/g | ₹4.53/g | 37.2% |
| Apple Cinnamon | Spiced fruit | ₹93.22 | ₹6.21/g | ₹4.74/g | 31.0% |
| Gardenia | White floral | ₹105.02 | ₹7.00/g | ₹4.33/g | 61.7% |
| Honeydew Melon | Fruity | ₹105.02 | ₹7.00/g | ₹4.35/g | 60.8% |
| Vanilla Bean | Vanilla | ₹130.00 | ₹8.67/g | ₹7.90/g | 9.7% |
| Ten testers | ₹976.56 |
The premiums range widely. Vanilla Bean costs only 9.7% more per gram at 15 g than at 100 g, while Citrus Lemon costs 80.9% more, because its 100 g is one of the cheapest in the catalogue at ₹300.00. That does not change the decision. The premium is paid on 15 g, so in rupees it is small: ₹36.42 for Citrus Lemon. Each 15 g scents one full 200 g candle at 7.5% (15 g of oil and 185 g of wax) — enough for a real burn test in the jar you will sell. If a scent needs a second test, the smallest practical testing quantities covers 50 g test pots.
Ten is also about the ceiling for a first test. Beyond that, you are testing faster than you can burn, cure and judge. If you have fifteen scents in mind, test ten now and hold five for the next round. Ten fragrances on ₹30,000 and five fragrances on ₹20,000 look at how many to launch on a fixed budget; this guide is about what to buy in what size once you have chosen the number.
What the trial premium buys you
Here is the arithmetic that justifies trial sizes. Buying all ten scents at 100 g up front costs ₹4,559.90. Testing all ten at 15 g costs ₹976.56. The same 150 g of oil at 100 g rates would have cost ₹683.99, so the trial premium — the extra you pay for buying small — is ₹292.58 in total.
| Route | Oil spend | Oil in proven scents | Oil in scents that did not pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy all ten at 100 g | ₹4,559.90 | 500 g (₹2,417.12) | 500 g (₹2,142.78) |
| 15 g trial, then 100 g of the five winners | ₹3,393.68 | 500 g (₹2,417.12) + trial oil used | 75 g of testers, already burned |
| Difference | ₹1,166.22 less | Same stock of winners | ₹2,142.78 not tied up |
The five winners in the table — Eucalyptus Spearmint, Jasmine, Roasted Coffee, Woody Oud and Vanilla Bean — are an example to make the arithmetic concrete, not a prediction. Your five will be different. The pattern holds whichever five pass: the trial route spends ₹1,166.22 less and, more importantly, never puts ₹2,142.78 into scents your test rejected. If nine of ten pass, the trial route can cost slightly more than buying 100 g up front, but by then you have nine proven scents and the premium was still only ₹292.58. The lean three-month inventory applies the same logic to every material, month by month.
The two-stage list
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 | |
| Ten 15 g testers (listed below) | ₹976.56 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 5 kg | ₹2,995.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, 20 | ₹118.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thick C2, 10 | ₹94.40 |
| White Matte Glass Jar, 2 packs of 5 | ₹708.00 |
| Weighing scale + pen thermometer + pouring jug | ₹1,239.00 |
| Stage 1 total | ₹6,130.96 |
| Stage 2 | |
| Five proven scents at 100 g (example five) | ₹2,417.12 |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 3 × 1 kg top-up | ₹1,797.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, 50 (size proven) | ₹295.00 |
| White Matte Glass Jar, 6 packs of 5 | ₹2,124.00 |
| Stage 2 total | ₹6,633.12 |
| Both stages | ₹12,764.08 |
Stage 2 produces 30 launch candles — six in each of five scents — from 500 g of proven oil (30 × 16 g = 480 g, 20 g spare) and the remaining 3150 g of the 5 kg bag plus a 3 kg top-up. The two stages together cost ₹12,764.08, and at no point is more than one bag of wax or one bottle per scent sitting unproven.

Getting the split wrong
The second common mistake is treating a flat-priced item as a bulk bargain. A thousand Eco wicks for ₹5,900.00 cost exactly ₹5.90 each, the same as ten for ₹59.00. If the wick size is wrong for your jar, you own a thousand of the wrong wick. Buy the proven size in the quantity your next two or three production runs need, and reorder — the price will be the same.
The third is forgetting that a material can move columns. A jar you trialled in a 5-pack moves to bulk once customers like it. An oil you bought at 100 g moves back to trial if it stops selling — do not reorder it at 100 g just because that is what you bought last time. Review the split every time you reorder. Which supplies usually make sense to bulk-buy first covers the same question once you are producing at scale, and the order-of-purchase guide puts the sequence in order.
Finally, remember that bulk for a new business rarely means the biggest listed pack. It means the pack that covers your next few production runs without a reorder. For a ten-scent launch that is usually a 5 kg bag of wax, not a 50 kg one. How much wax to keep before marketing works that out from production capacity rather than hope, and the ₹50,000 opening inventory shows how to size stock so it lasts until the first reorder.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. It would suit us to recommend ten 100 g bottles and a 10 kg bag. This page recommends ten 15 g testers and says plainly that our 10 kg wax bag is not cheaper per kilo than the 1 kg, because that is what our own listed prices show.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026. Eco wick, White Matte jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; the Thick C2 10-pack, wooden wick, Salsa jar, mini jar and dye prices were pulled on 24–25 September 2026. The 23.1% median 15 g premium and the 52-of-91 flat-kilo figure are catalogue statistics from the same pull. Per-gram and percentage figures are arithmetic on those prices.
The five 'winning' scents are an illustration, not a prediction or a sales ranking; we publish no sales or throw data per oil. The 7.5% test load, 8% production load and 5% wax allowance are working assumptions. Wick sizes per jar diameter and dye doses are not published.
