Wax, fragrance, wicks and containers from one specialist supplier that publishes grades and sells test sizes. Cartons from a printer in your own city. No equipment in the first order. Here is that order, itemised, with a total.
₹5,302.46
the complete first order, every line priced below · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Where do I buy the raw materials? Wax, fragrance, wicks and containers from one specialist supplier that publishes grades and ceilings and sells trial sizes. Cartons and tissue from a local printer — bulky, cheap, generic. Equipment: nothing yet.

What does the first order cost? ₹5,302.46 — one 5 kg wax, three wick sizes, four 15g fragrance trial sizes, ten jars, a scale, a thermometer, wick stickers and care stickers. Itemised below.

How long before I can sell? Five to six weeks from the day you order. Twenty-eight of those forty-two days are curing, and curing is not optional.

What should I not buy? A melter, a funnel, dyes, moulds or a wick trimmer: ₹6,628.22, more than the whole first order, and none of it tells you whether your candle works.
The short answer
One specialist supplier for the four things that interact: wax, fragrance, wicks, containers. A missing one stalls the whole batch.
Local for the packaging that only travels: outer cartons, void fill, tissue and courier bags. Buy them in your own city and keep the freight.
No equipment in the first order. A ₹354 scale and a ₹354 thermometer are the only two tools with no substitute. Everything else waits until batch four tells you what you need.
Order to first sellable candle — 42 days, of which 28 are curing 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 CURE · 14 DAYS · DO NOTHING CURE · 14 DAYS · AGAIN SELL W0 W1 W2 W3 W4 W5 W6 1 · Days 0–4 — one box arrives from one supplier 2 · Days 4–6 — pour 8 jars, three wick sizes 3 · Days 6–20 — cure, lids on, in a closed carton 4 · Days 20–23 — burn test, three 4-hour burns 5 · Day 23 — verdict: wick up, wick down, hold 6 · Days 24–25 — second pour, one variable changed 7 · Days 25–39 — cure again. There is no shortcut. 8 · Days 39–42 — the first candle you can honestly sell
Two black blocks take two thirds of this timeline, because two fourteen-day cures take 28 of the 42 days. Everything you actively do occupies about eleven working days; the rest is waiting, and waiting is the part beginners cut. Cut it and you are burn-testing a candle that has not finished becoming one — so your verdict on wick size is wrong, so you change the wrong variable.
Straight answer
Where should a new Indian candle business buy its raw materials?
Split the list three ways. Buy wax, fragrance oil, wicks and containers from one specialist candle-making supplier that publishes wax grades and stated fragrance ceilings and sells trial sizes — those four materials interact with each other, and testing them together only means anything if they arrive together. Buy outer cartons, void fill, tissue and courier bags locally, from a printer or packaging dealer in your own city; they are bulky, low-value and identical everywhere, so paying freight on them is a straight loss. Buy no equipment yet beyond a ₹354 scale and a ₹354 pen thermometer — a saucepan you already own melts wax perfectly well, and every other tool is a decision you are not yet qualified to make. The complete first order on that basis is ₹5,302.46: one 5 kg wax, three wick sizes, four 15g fragrance trial sizes, ten jars from one family, and stickers. The full material list and the 90-day launch plan are separate guides.
One line: one specialist supplier for wax, fragrance, wicks and jars; a local printer for cartons; nothing for equipment — ₹5,302.46, and six weeks before you have a candle worth selling.
The whole first order fits in one basket: CSI 464 at ₹2,537 for 5 kg, Eco Candle Wicks from ₹118 for 20, fragrance from ₹68.44 for 15g, White Matte Glass Jars at ₹708 for 10. One box, one invoice, one delivery date.

Why 5 kg of one wax. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹507.40 per kilogram at the 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg tiers alike, so five kilos costs nothing extra per kilo and removes the commonest reason a first run stalls: running out mid-test. That is roughly 25 candles at 200g each — eight test jars, a corrected batch, pieces to photograph. Stated ceiling up to 10%, the wax manufacturer's formulation limit rather than a regulatory one.

Why three wick sizes. A wick is not picked from a chart, it is found by burning. Eco Thin (C1) at ₹5.90, Eco Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 and Cotton Braided at ₹12.00 burn differently. Fifty wicks for ₹426.80 decides whether the candle burns clean or tunnels. One size is the false economy that costs a fortnight, because you find out after the cure. The wick-by-diameter guide narrows the start; it does not replace the burn.

What 15g of fragrance actually makes. At a 10% load, 15g of oil makes 150g of finished candle — one small jar, or two 70g votives. Four bottles cost ₹409.66 and let you judge four scents in the bottle, cold in the wax and hot across one burn each: the right amount of information for a first order, the wrong amount for a launch. When one wins, move to 100g (₹300–₹790 depending on the oil). Buying 500g untested is how ₹3,840 of vanilla ends up in a cupboard. With 92 oils in the range, the point of a trial size is that being wrong costs ₹81 to ₹130.

Why one jar family. The White Matte Glass Jar is ₹70.80 each and belongs to a family priced identically across sixteen colourways — black, green, royal blue and the rest, at ₹708.00 per ten. A wick tested in this jar is valid for every jar in the family; move to a 70g votive or a 200ml salsa jar and you burn-test from scratch. Ten jars is eight tests plus two spares.

Why the scale, thermometer and stickers. Fragrance load is a weight percentage and oils differ in density, so a measuring jug cannot give a repeatable load: the scale and pen thermometer at ₹354 each are the difference between a recipe and an anecdote, and unlike a pitcher or a melter they have no kitchen substitute. Wick stickers hold the tab flat while the wax sets — without them the wick drifts and you have tested your glue. Care stickers carry the burn instructions that head off most customer messages.

Priced above, CSI live pricing, September 2026: CSI 464 ₹2,537.00 / 5 kg · Eco Wicks C1 ₹118.00 and C2 ₹188.80 / 20 · Cotton Braided ₹120.00 / 10 · Vanilla Bean ₹130.00, Sandalwood ₹93.22, Lavender ₹105.02, Citrus Lemon ₹81.42, all 15g · White Matte Glass Jar ₹708.00 / 10 · scale and thermometer ₹354.00 each · wick stickers ₹100.00 / 40 · care stickers ₹413.00 / 500.

Week by week, from the box to the first sellable candle

The instinct is to pour everything on day one and photograph it on day two. Here is what actually happens, and why the calendar looks like six weeks rather than a weekend.

1
Days 0–4 · The order arrivesUnpack against the invoice and check the wax weight on your new scale. Open each 15g bottle, smell it cold, and write down what you actually smell rather than what the name says. That usually changes one of your four scent choices.
2
Days 4–6 · The first pour — eight jars, not oneMelt CSI 464, add fragrance at the stated temperature, stir two full minutes, pour. Eight jars: four scents × two wick sizes, third wick in reserve. Write the batch sheet at the bench — wax weight, oil weight, load, wick code, pour temperature. Written from memory that evening, it is fiction.
3
Days 6–20 · Cure. Fourteen days. Do nothing.Curing is the wax crystal structure settling and the fragrance distributing through it, and it takes weeks. Fourteen days is the working minimum for a soy container candle; woody, gourmand and oriental oils keep improving to twenty-one. A candle judged at 48 hours smells weak because it is unfinished — and that maker buys a different oil to fix a problem that would have fixed itself.
4
Days 20–23 · The burn testThree burns per jar, four hours each, in a closed room with nothing else scented in it. Does the pool reach the glass in two to three hours; does the flame soot or mushroom; can someone walking in from outside smell it. The last matters most and you cannot judge it yourself — your nose adapts within twenty minutes.
5
Day 23 · The verdictThree outcomes and no fourth. Tunnelling, weak flame, pool short of the glass: go up a wick size. Soot, mushrooming, glass too hot to hold: go down. Full pool in two to three hours, clean flame, scent detectable from the door: hold — that is your recipe. A wick fixes a burn, not a fragrance.
6
Days 24–25 · The second pour, one variable changedSame wax, same jar, same load, the wick the test told you to use — and only that changed. Change wick and load and scent together and an improved batch teaches you nothing repeatable. This is where the third wick size and the rest of the 5 kg stop being generous and start being necessary.
7
Days 25–39 · Cure again. Still no shortcut. The corrected batch needs the same fourteen days. That is the most useful fact in candle production planning: every recipe change costs a fortnight before you can honestly judge it — which is why the five decisions below get made before you order, not after.
8
Days 39–42 · The first candle you can honestly sellBurn one jar to confirm nothing moved, stick a care sticker on the base, photograph the rest and price them. Five to six weeks is normal. A maker who went from box to market in nine days skipped the cure, and their customer notices in week three. Pricing: the 2026 guide.

Work backwards from your launch date, not forwards from your enthusiasm. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November; a maker ordering in late September is learning to make candles while the festive window closes. The fortnight-per-change rule is also the real argument for ₹426.80 of wicks rather than ₹118. Money is not the binding constraint. The calendar is.

The CSI principle
Every extra variable in your first order is not an extra candle. It is an extra fourteen-day cure before you know anything.
Four scents in one jar with two wicks is eight test candles and one cure. Four scents in three jars with three wicks is thirty-six candles and a comparison you cannot read. The discipline is not about saving money — it is about being able to interpret the result.

Five decisions to make before you place the order

Make these five at your desk, for free, in an hour. Every one you leave open multiplies the test grid and the number of cures you sit through.

Grid size is waxes × jars × wicks × scents. Hold four at one and vary the fifth: eight candles answer your question. Let two drift and you are at thirty-six candles for an answer you cannot isolate.

The five decisions · and the cost of leaving each one open
What to fix, what to test, and what a second option does to the grid
Decision Fix it at The recommendation Cost of a second option
1 · Wax One CSI 464 flakes for containers — single-pour, ₹507.40/kg, stated ceiling up to 10% Doubles the grid and invalidates every wick result across it
2 · Jar One family Matte glass jar family — ₹70.80 each, sixteen colourways at one price Doubles the grid; a different diameter means a different wick
3 · Wick Two sizes — this is the variable Eco C1 at ₹5.90 and Eco C2 at ₹9.44, with Cotton Braided at ₹12.00 in reserve None — this is what you are testing, and one size is too few
4 · Scents Four, all at 15g One gourmand, one woody, one floral, one citrus — ₹409.66 the set Each extra scent is two more jars, more oil and no more clarity
5 · Candle size One One fill weight, held constant across all eight test jars Changes burn time, pool area and cost per unit all at once

One wax. Wax changes pool temperature, fragrance ceiling, pour temperature and wick behaviour at once, so a two-wax test is two projects. CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg is the container default; for pillars, Soy Pillar Wax at ₹600.00/kg. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00/kg carry a higher stated ceiling of up to 13% and are the step up once your recipe is stable. Checking what arrives: verifying wax quality.

One jar family. There are 80 containers in the CSI range. Pick a family, not a jar — the same diameter in several colours at one price, so the range looks varied while the wick stays constant. The matte glass family does that at ₹354.00 per five; 70g votives at ₹31.86 each work the same way lower down. What does not work is one of each.

Two wick sizes, because this is the experiment. Two sizes across four scents is eight jars: one evening's pouring, one cure, one readable result. The third size is for the correction pour, when the test says C1 tunnels and C2 soots and you need the option between them.

Four scents, chosen across families rather than by preference. One gourmand, one woody, one floral, one fresh gives four behaviours in the same wax — more useful than four vanillas. Vanilla Bean (₹130), Sandalwood (₹93.22), Lavender (₹105.02) and Citrus Lemon (₹81.42) at 15g is one such set; swap in British Rose at ₹94.40 or Gilli Mitti at ₹140.00 to suit your brand. Once one wins: how much oil a business needs.

One candle size. Fill weight sets burn time, pool area, wick requirement, shipping weight and cost per unit, so changing it changes your economics and your test at once. One size and four scents reads as deliberate; three sizes and one scent costs three times as much to test.

You are not buying candles. You are buying the answer to one question, and the fewer questions you ask at once, the sooner you get it.

Budget reality — what ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 each buy

Both numbers come up constantly and both work. The difference is not quality — it is how many candles you make before reordering.

₹5,000 · the complete first order, minus one line
₹4,889.46 — everything above except the care stickers
What you get Detail Price
Wax CSI 464, 5 kg — about 25 candles at 200g ₹2,537.00
Three wick sizes Eco C1 ×20, Eco C2 ×20, Cotton Braided ×10 ₹426.80
Four scents 15g each — Vanilla Bean, Sandalwood, Lavender, Citrus Lemon ₹409.66
Ten jars White Matte Glass Jar, pack of 10 ₹708.00
Scale + thermometer The two tools with no free substitute ₹708.00
Wick stickers 1 sheet, 40 stickers ₹100.00
Total Care stickers deferred — you do not need them until week six ₹4,889.46

The only line cut is the care sticker roll at ₹413: care stickers go on candles you sell, and you are not selling for six weeks. What you should not do is drop from 5 kg of wax to 1 kg to free ₹2,029.60 for more scents. The per-kilo price is identical, and running out mid-correction costs a delivery cycle on top of the cure.

₹15,000 · the same list, scaled to a real first production run
₹14,043.40 — bigger sizes of the same decisions, plus three tools you have now earned
What you get Detail Price
Wax CSI 464, 10 kg — about 50 candles at 200g ₹5,074.00
Three wick sizes, production quantity Eco C1 ×100 (₹590), Eco C2 ×100 (₹944), Cotton Braided ×50 (₹600) ₹2,134.00
Four scents at 50g Vanilla Bean ₹410, Sandalwood ₹271.40, Lavender ₹270, Citrus Lemon ₹170 ₹1,121.40
Forty jars White Matte Glass Jar, four packs of 10 at ₹708.00 ₹2,832.00
Scale + thermometer Unchanged — still ₹354 each ₹708.00
Wick stickers Three sheets of 40 at ₹100.00 ₹300.00
Care stickers Pack of 1000, 1.5 inch — ₹0.70 each ₹699.00
Pouring pitcher Steel Pouring Pitcher, 600 ML ₹708.00
Mixer CSI Pro Mixer — even two-minute incorporation without arm ache ₹349.00
Stirring sticks Bamboo Stirring Sticks, pack of 5 ₹118.00
Total Same five decisions, 40 finished candles instead of 8 ₹14,043.40

Notice what does not change: same wax, same jar family, same three wick sizes, same four scents. The extra ₹8,740.94 buys quantity and three tools that make a forty-candle pour manageable. It does not buy a wider test. A ₹15,000 budget is not permission to try six waxes; it is permission to make the same candle fifty times. Full launch costs: what it costs to start a candle business; whether the numbers work: is candle making profitable in 2026.

The one thing not on either list
Outer cartons, void fill, tissue and courier bags. Buy them from a printer or packaging dealer in your own city. They are bulky, low-value and identical wherever you buy them, so freight on them is pure waste. CSI stocks packaging materials for the pieces that need to match the product, but the plain corrugated box is a local purchase every time. That costs us a line on the invoice and it is still the right advice.

Why one supplier matters at this stage

Not loyalty, and not really price. A batch is an all-or-nothing event, and a batch missing one component is not a smaller batch. It is no batch.

Split the first order across four sellers to save ₹300. Wax arrives Tuesday, wicks Thursday, jars the following Monday because glass moves slowly, and the fragrance sits with a courier over a weekend. You pour six days late, and your fourteen-day cure now ends after the weekend you had blocked for photography. You did not save ₹300. You spent a week.

The second failure is subtler. Wax, wick, fragrance and container are four halves of one decision, not four purchases — a wick that pools perfectly in a 70 mm jar tunnels in an 80 mm one. When all four arrive from one source with published grades, a failed test tells you which variable failed. From four sources with four sets of unstated specifications, it tells you nothing.

The stall, priced. Say the jars are late. You have ₹4,594.46 of wax, wicks, fragrance, scale, thermometer and stickers sitting idle behind the ₹708.00 line — 87% of the order waiting on 13% of it, and that ratio gets worse at volume. It is also why a supplier's stock page matters more than its price page: an item marked out of stock is information you can act on; one that quietly ships late is not.

Concretely, "one specialist supplier" means they publish the wax grade rather than calling it "soy wax"; they publish the stated fragrance ceiling per wax — up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, up to 10% for CSI 464, both formulation limits rather than regulatory ones; they sell trial sizes, issue GST invoices, and can produce MSDS and IFRA documentation on request. A seller who cannot say which grade it is and what load it takes is not cheaper — they have moved the cost of finding out onto you, payable in fourteen-day instalments.

The counter-argument: one supplier is a single point of failure, and at scale that is real. Solve it when you run repeat monthly volume and can qualify a second source without disturbing a proved recipe. In month one the thing most likely to stop you is a component that has not arrived. See where professional brands buy and can I buy everything from one supplier.

What not to buy first, priced

We sell every item below and we are telling you not to buy it yet. Not because they are bad — the mini melter has some of the warmest reviews on the store — but because a tool that speeds up production is worthless until you have a product worth producing.

The tempting basket · everything a first-time buyer adds and should not
Priced at CSI live pricing, September 2026, with the reason to wait
Item Price Why not yet Buy it when
Mini Electric Wax Melter, 1 L ₹2,360.00 A saucepan and a steel bowl melt 1 kg of flakes perfectly well for eight test jars You are pouring 20+ candles a week and double-boiling has become the bottleneck
Wax Pouring Funnel, 4 nozzles ₹1,888.00 It solves a speed problem you do not have at eight jars You are filling four jars at a time on a repeat production line
Hot Air Gun ₹531.00 Fixes surface imperfections on candles you have not made yet Sink holes or rough tops show up consistently across a proven recipe
Candle Wick Trimmer ₹588.82 A customer accessory, not a production tool — scissors trim a test wick You are selling gift sets and want an add-on line
Premium Candle Wicking Needle ₹472.00 Built for moulded and pillar work, not for jars with wick stickers You move into moulds and need to thread wick through a form
Wick Setting Tool ₹399.00 ₹100 of wick stickers does the same job for forty candles Volume makes forty seconds per jar a cost worth removing
One liquid candle dye, 15 ml ₹236.00 Colour is a brand decision. Making it before you have a burn result adds a variable for no information Your recipe is fixed and you are designing the range
One silicone mould ₹153.40 A different product category with a different wax, a different wick and its own learning curve Container candles are selling and you want a second line
Total avoided ₹6,628.22 More than the entire first order — and not one rupee of it tells you whether your candle burns

Two larger temptations sit above that table. The 20-litre electric wax melter at ₹23,600 is excellent for a business melting tens of kilos a week; in month one it is four times your material budget. Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹21,240 for 50 kg is the best per-kilo value on the store at ₹424.80 — and exactly the wrong first purchase, because you do not yet know this is the wax you want. Buy the bulk bag in month four, against a recipe you have proved.

There is a version of this page that recommends the melter, the funnel, three waxes and eight fragrances, worth roughly ₹18,000 more to us on the first invoice. It also produces a maker with no working recipe and no second order — and the second order is the only one that matters. Spend ₹5,302.46, learn what your candle does, and let batch four tell you what to buy next. The mistakes that cost new makers most: where to source supplies for a business.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The commercially convenient version of this article recommends a melter, a funnel, three waxes and eight fragrances. We stock all of it, and recommend a ₹5,302.46 basket instead — because a maker who buys equipment before a recipe does not place a second order.

Every price and product name is taken from live CSI stock in September 2026, and the linked product page takes precedence. The 13% and 10% figures are the loads stated by the wax manufacturers for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and CSI 464: formulation limits, not regulatory limits, and not interchangeable. The six-week timeline assumes two fourteen-day cures.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy everything for a candle business from one supplier?
For the four materials that interact — wax, fragrance, wicks, containers — yes, because a batch missing one component is not a batch. Cartons and courier bags are the exception: buy those locally. Splitting the core four to save a few hundred rupees costs a week of calendar and makes a failed test impossible to diagnose.
How much should my first candle-making order cost?
₹5,302.46: CSI 464 5 kg at ₹2,537.00, three wick sizes at ₹426.80, four 15g fragrance trial sizes at ₹409.66, ten matte glass jars at ₹708.00, a scale and a thermometer at ₹354.00 each, wick stickers ₹100.00 and care stickers ₹413.00. A ₹5,000 budget covers all of it bar the care stickers, at ₹4,889.46.
How long before I can sell my first candle?
Five to six weeks from the day you order, and that is normal. Delivery a few days, the pour a day, then fourteen days of curing before a burn test means anything; test three days, verdict a day, corrected pour a day, and that batch needs its own fourteen-day cure. Twenty-eight of the forty-two days are curing.
Should I buy a wax melter for my first order?
No. The Mini Electric Wax Melter at ₹2,360.00 is a good machine and 44% of your first material budget spent on speed you do not need yet. A saucepan of water and a steel bowl melt enough for eight test jars. Buy it when double-boiling slows a run you are already selling. Same logic for the funnel at ₹1,888.00.
How many fragrance oils should I start with, and in what size?
Four, all at 15g, chosen across families — one gourmand, one woody, one floral, one fresh. Fifteen grams runs ₹68.44 to ₹216.00 and makes about 150g of finished candle at a 10% load. Move winners to 100g or 500g. With 92 oils in the range, the point of a trial size is that being wrong costs about ₹100.
Is it cheaper to buy raw materials in bulk from the start?
Per kilogram yes; in practice no, because you do not yet know which materials you want. Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹21,240.00 for 50 kg is ₹424.80/kg against ₹450.00/kg at 1 kg — a real ₹1,260 saving, worthless if the wax does not suit your jar. CSI 464 is ₹507.40/kg at every tier. Bulk is a month-four decision.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. Product recommendations reflect the CSI range; the sourcing split, the five-decision test design and the six-week timeline apply to any supplier.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers. Names, ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me. Only reviews Judge.me records as verified purchases carry the badge — Sraddha, Kaushiki Satarkar and Renu; Chanpreet kaur, M.S. and Jinal are published reviews without that flag. One review (Jinal, Ceramic Jar for Candle Making) is shortened with an ellipsis and otherwise unedited. No locations are attached, because Judge.me does not record them.
